Tasted for #tawnytuesday. My first Niepoort Port and what a memorable experience. It first starts with the color. It's almost like a rainbow, the way the color fades from ruby red to garnet to tawny to light orange on the rim. On the nose, delicious notes of caramel, butterscotch, stone fruit and tea. On the palate, loads of that delicious citrus and stone fruit tea. Peach, apricot, black tea and candied orange. The acidity is lively. And the finish is endless. This is stunning. Possibly the best 10-Year I've had.
*HIGHLY RECOMMENDED*

Bottle aged for 7 years (bottled/lot 10.06.2015). Tasted on day 2 after opening. APPEARANCE: Medium to pale tawny colour (surprise...). NOSE: More defined and darker berry fruitiness; cassis, blackberry, dark plums, tar, violets. Still slightly jammy nose but much classier than on day 1 (yesterday was all about not much more than red berries jam/marmalade). Later dried fruits and nuts as well. (88-89p) TASTE: It is in the mouth that I really notice the improvement from day 1; much much better defined and tighter/firmer fruitiness, sharper (as in less dull) acidity. Medium sweet, medium to medium full bodied. (88-89p) FINISH: Long, fruity. Mildly tannic and drying towards the exit. (88p) OVAREALL: It is amazing how much this has transformed since yesterday when it was first oppened. Then it was an OK, slightly flabby, competent but not very fascinating run-of-the-mill tawny. Maybe worthy of 84 or 85 points max. Today it is approaching the level and characteristics of decent medium matured vintage ports (or at least good medium matured LBVs). Coming in at around 88-89 points on my scale. And I "know" that it will be even better tomorrow. TOTAL SCORE 88 (89) points. So far.
UPDATE 24.07.2022: Three and a half weeks after uncorking (kept in small full bottle in the fridge) the wine has improved. As was expected. On the nose all the previous characteristics are still there but now it has gained an extra dimension of bitter sweet red berries, sea buckthorn and rosehip tea. In the mouth it is also very recogniseable but has "firmed up". Fairly tight, with the zesty acidity raining in the sweet ripe fruitiness. Revised TOTAL SCORE 90 points.

Light garnet. Prunes, toffee, cherries. Palate shows great acidity and a slight tannic bite on the finish. Slight heat on the palate from the 19.5% alcohol. Complex and long. This is a big and bold Port, though much more balanced than other 10-year Tawnies. Great night cap with some cheese.

Lots of nut notes on the nose along with a butterscotch quality. A bit above medium bodied (20% ABV) with all sorts of varied nuts making up the upfront flavor profile. Good density through the mid-body and adding some chocolate, plum and orange qualities. Spices, tannins and earthy/nutty notes on back and through the finish. This was actually a bottle purchased about 10 years ago and was unsurprisingly still in very nice shape. The sweetness and the nuts works well with the slightly richer notes through the middle. Should be able to hold this level for some time to come.

Good red/brown color, red to brown rim. Creamy, soft cheese, good rancio, molasses, sweet red fruit. Smooth and sweet, rich mouthfeel, prunes and red cherries, good acidity and tannin, nice nutty finish. Excellent tawny port, strikes a good balance between fruit and age.

This is the NV 10-year-old tawny, bottled 2018 in a half-bottle (375ml). The most exquisite colour: a clear pink-red-gold. Nose of pine resin, gingerbread and caramel. Toffee apples on the palate, with stewed quince and strawberry shortbread. Despite the fruit dessert theme, it's not overly sweet: I could very happily drink this all night. Oh Niepoort, your ports are totally unlike anybody else's!

Restaurant Pop and Pour, didn't note the bottling date, but I guess from memory that it was 2016, cherry colour, smells of marzipan and almonds, medium body, in the mouth marzipan and almonds, in the aftertaste marzipan and acidity, good length (30 sec), good 10 Y Tawny

From memory. We used this bottle as a reference when tasting older vintage port and LBVs. This one was substantially lighter, both colour (think red burgundy) and footprint, but had balance and a good finish. I would say red (mostly dried) fruits, nuts, and touch of raisins. Not too sweet. Comes across as quite young, although I have no references to say whether this can benefit from aging. We tried it to cote de boeuf and peppercorn sauce (ok), gingerbread and stilton (the better combo) and chocolates (less successful).

Usually a lovely port, but this particular bottle is slightly disappointing. Rather simple and cloying, and the typical freshness that I normally love is lacking. A pity.

Pulled from a Corvine over the past 6 months or so. Consistently good, but not great. Big bites of toffee, fruit cake, burnt orange and nuttiness. Very fresh and creamy, but I'm realizing that I prefer 20 year tawnys.

A dramatic smoky caramel and creme brulee nose that is very inviting, offset only by the slight alcoholic heat. A creamy mouth feel with a kaleidoscope of flavors- hazelnuts, monukka raisins, peanut butter cups and shower sex. The syrupy alcohol is a bit over the top but the overall impression is a delightful everyday after dinner celebration at a good price point.

It's finally time to get this out of inventory. I probably opened this a year ago and have had a quarter bottle sitting around for a long time. I tried some tonight and it's still fine. The consistent notes are maple, orange and honey with medium sweetness. Very nice.

Bottled 2006: Toasted almonds with hints of caramel, just the right amount of acidity and tannins for a solid mid-palate that lasts to the finish. Backend was full of orange and honey flavors. Score might be biased because I'm a big fan of Niepoort.

-- tasted a couple pours blind at the winery, over approx 45 minutes –
Very rich, complex, and smooth. Sinfully good for a 10 yr. Tawny. The best 10 yr. Tawny we tasted over the course of our three days in Portugal. Although the color reveals this as a 10 yr., in a black glass I could be convinced this is a very nice 20 yr. or 30 yr..

Opened and folowed over three weeks. Did not change much even with three weeks of air. Nice nose, caramel, figs, dates, dried cherries, rum-soaked raisin. On the palate, raisin, dates, fig, caramel. Shortish finish with high levels of spirit. For my money, I would rather drink an Aussie tawny like Trevor Jones, same quality at about 1/3/ the price.

I think this bottle was flawed. To much alkohol on the nose, some wet cardboard... And that´s very sad, because underneath all the "badness", it shows great potential. I´m sad... Really sad that it´s bad... Well, I better buy a new bottle!

Color: Caramel with red hues, definitely a baby. I would think this could easily age i bottle another 10 years and still be delicious.
Nose: Red fruits and nutty more tawny notes mingle nicely. Unlike any Tawny I have ever had, and have not had that many I might add so excuse me if this sounds a little amateurish.
Palate: Long finish, medium to full bodied. Sweet, but at the same time just as much acidity, a nd flavor concentration of fruit and nuts. Amazing acidity that cleans up the finish superbly. Paired amazingly well with a caramel, graham, pecan, and vanilla pie, topped with slow cooked apples. The acidity in the fruit and the wine were a perfect match as the acidity was reduced in the apples by being caramelized.
Night 2: More of the same and I can't get over the beautiful color of this tawny. More of the aged tawny notes are starting to dominate, caramels, candied orange, brown sugar.
Night 3: Orange peel and blossom, candied almonds accentuate the above notes. The concentration, yet supple medium body of this port wine speaks of exceptional wine making.

No numerical score as we are just beginning to sample tawny Port. This is number three. The first two were the 10 year old Graham and the 20 year old Taylor Fladgate. This wine is almost a perfect clone of the Taylor. We tasted them side by side and found very little difference in either appearance or taste although the Taylor was more viscous. This wine has a very rich fruit nose. Flavors of caramel and honey with a long, sweet finish.

Fruit-forward and very pleasant, with notes of orange and chocolate. This is not a blackbuster, but it is fairly priced, easy to drink, and a crowd pleaser. Comes to life quickly after opening, which makes this a nice wine to have in the cellar for some impromptu desire to drink a Port at the end of a meal (a vintage port, in comparison, will deliver a lot more, but it may take hours to open up).

Strong brown sugar nose but a little too much alcohol on the palate on day one, even after a brief decanting and aeration. Really opened up nicely by day two. Dark brown sugar notes had moved from nose to late palate and long, slow finish. Really enjoyable. I also get the orange zest, caramel, and toffee mentioned by earlier reviewers.

Upon first opening, lots of orange zest, dates, caramel and oak spice. Luscious and round in the mouth with excellent grip. Quite a bit of heat on the finish brings the score down a bit. Quite good for a 10y tawny.

2003 bottling. Day 1: A little caramel and a fair amount of orange peel. Surprisingly easy going, warm, very silky and smooth, maple syrup. Pleasant to good at this stage. A nice citric edge at the finish keeps this from being cloying, but I was expecting a little more oomph and backbone. Could be my experience with 10-year tawnies though.

An absolutely beautiful orangish-tawny in color with a slight ruby tint. The nose offers medium intensity with dried cherry, caramel, dates, nuts, and cinnamon. On the palate, the wine is full body, rich and round. Very good acidity. Nice balance. Very long finish with caramel. Some spicy notes and a little burn from alcohol but not too much. Very good. Love the finish. 50 + 5 + 11 + 17 + 8

Wine Cellar Niepoort Tasting (Wine Cellar): Aged in old casks but a little larger at 550 litres. Medium brown-orange (tawny) colour. Some initial notes of bread dough, caramel, candied oranges, spice, nuts and meebos (dried apricot). Medium intense on entry, the wine has ripe, sweet fruit with plenty of caramel, spices and orange peel. Down the line tawny style, somewhat integrated with a medium finish.

This is one of my favorite 10 years, but in my quest to try different things, one I have not visited in a bit. Time to change that.
I again see why I love this little gem. The color is quite pale for a 10 year, and is closer to a 20 year, a nice pale redish orange with an ever slight hint of tan. That unique spice on the nose that is so Niepoort. Mellowed tannins, a touch of acidity on the back of the palate, carmel, a hint of mocha, spice, and a very very slight touch of heat that helps pull it all together into a long finish. I could drink this all night long...and may just do so Smile
If your looking for a very solid 10 year tawny, this one will not disappoint.

Love this port for a 10 year Tawny with a good QPR. Best to let it breath some before drinking, which makes it better the second or third day than the first. However, always good. Nice nut and carmel flavors with a long finish. Really like this and it never disappoints.

This is a very nice 10 year tawny. The color is a dark tawny / red with even concentration of color and good clarity. The nose is expressive giving hints of walnut, earth, dried figs, and spice. On the palate the wine is soft, lush, full, and round, excellent mouth feel. Sweet but nicely balanced with acidity. On the first day, this showed a lot of alcohol on both the nose and the palate. Two days later and slightly chilled there is a slight spicy feel to the nose and no perception of alcohol on the palate. Long finish. 50 + 5 + 12 + 17 + 8

Very rich, complex, and smooth. Sinfully good for a 10 yr. Tawny. The best 10 yr. Tawny we tasted over the course of our three days in Portugal. Although the color reveals this as a 10 yr., in a black glass I could be convinced this is a very nice 20 yr. or 30 yr..

The palate is not overtly sweet, flavorful, consistent with nose. Pleasant, but not in my wheelhouse after this evenings wines.

To much alkohol on the nose, some wet cardboard... And that´s very sad, because underneath all the "badness", it shows great potential.

Well, I better buy a new bottle!

Night 1:
