  • Another first for yours truly brought by a member of CDV713 in Houston.

I had this along side my contribution of JL Chave Hermitage 2012. Both these wines showed wonderfully side by side.

Rhone has the personality that captures my attention over the reds of Burgundy. The whites are a completely different animal.

    This was lovely.

  • At Nubiani NYC. Barnyard nose on opening faded in about 10 minutes, leaving behind a gorgeous bouquet of roses and tar. The wine is largely tertiary now with some berry preserves, leather, smoked meats on the palate. Finely integrated tannins, went down very smoothly. This was a solid bottle and at a very nice drinking window.

  • Barnyard, leather, herbs, medicinal, coffee, chocolate powder, button mushroom, licorice, medium body but very long

  • IT Super Peking duck lunch at Maison Dakota. Drank in Gabriel Standart. Shy. Not very expressive. Took some time to open up more.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Sediments at end of bottle.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of red berries, red plum, blackberry, olive herbs, wild leather, some animal meat. Bit of tobacco and black pepper with air. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), fine integrated high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of redcurrant, blackberries, red plum, fine spice, leather, grilled meat. Tobacco and black pepper with more air. Long finish.
Good quality. I would say this is a rather gentle Hermitage. Still could develop more in terms of complexity.

  • This wine seemed rustic to me when drank side by side with the '96 Guigal La Mouline and '88 Jaboulet La Chappelle. Definitely got the iron notes and tannins accompanied by a lot of acid. Not sure if this is the vintage talking or just needed some fatty red meat dish pairing to make the wine shine brighter.

  • Medium dark red. Intense nose of dark fruit, meat, black pepper and cast iron. Delicious red fruit flavours. Tons of acid to go with some large tannins. Should continue to improve.

I thought this was very European, while the 97 Pavilion would appeal more to a new world drinker while still being strongly French.

  • poured as a foil to the 97 Chave. Opened in the AM and seemed much more tightly coiled than the Chave, so then decanted for several hours. Drunk over around 3 hours.

this quite a bit darker and more brooding with roasted meat, darker fruits, black olives, and overall a less subtle feel to it. Fuller, denser, and coarser on the palate with a more of a direct feel to it. Rich, but not overripe, brooding, younger and less coherent than the Chave. It suffered in its company, but overall was still very enjoyable and if I had any more bottles, I would like to have tried another one in 5+ years. 91 pts

  • Easter Day dinner with all the family. 4 hour decant of my remaining three bottles.
Power in a velvet glove much as my original 2012 note but with more elegance - whether from 2+ years or extra decanting time I'm not sure.
Drink over he next five years for best enjoyment.

  • 2 hour decant.
After a relatively poor bottle last time out, back at the full blast of my 2012 note which is still very much valid.
Excellent with still 3 or so years to go on this high plateau.

  • Decanted for 2 hours.
I suspect it was bottle variance, but while following the basic character of my original note, the concentration was missing leaving a (still nice enough) rather one dimensional flat impression.
Hopefully this was a one-off. Will report back. Normally 92-93pts.

  • Maquis herbs, sweet black fruit and hint of farmyard aromas after 2 hour decant.
Brooding dark appearance with just a little hint of age at the edges in glass.
Charred meaty, brulée sweet blackfruit flavour with depth and length.
Enough structure for another 5 years at least. I shall enjoy my remaining 11 bottles!!

  • Powerfull, very evolved gamey nose, ripe red fruit, prunes, licorice... in the mouth, ripe red fruit, cherries, almost sweet, good acidity, hint of greeness at the end

  • great nose with an earthy, forest floor appeal, some barnyard, grilled meat, thyme, cherry. mouth has a high toned cherriness to it. but with balance. has a moderate amount of complexity, but i craved a little more. as i worked with it through out the night it really grew on me. not that it changed it's profile, but that i was draw to the subtleness of the wine. I believe this is a wine that if served with my wine group I would dismiss as not quite enough for me, while every one else would love it, leaving me to scratch my head as to what I was missing.

  • Jemrose in New York City: Opens with a reticent core of meaty fruit and just a touch of wood then adding a bit of tobacco and hot rocks, becomes very fine and perfumed. Very pretty currant fruit in the mouth, seems particularly elegant coming after the previous wines and offers up a clarity and transparency those wines lacked. Zesty and clear as a bell with wild berry tones echoing through the mouth and into the long finish. Just coming into it's own this is delicious.

  • Very dark red verging on purple. Initially reserved on the nose, this wine opened nicely with about an hour of air to show very pure aromas of wild blackberry and mineral dust infused with a soupcon of spice. I am a sucker for soil-inflected dark fruit on the nose, so it seemed enough initially just to savor the aromas. In the mouth, impressively concentrated without showing any fatness at all, this wine is all sinew, drinking best between about 1 hour and 3.5 hours when it showed a very bright core of blackberry extract and finely comminuted granitic dust. This is stil a very young wine with its largely primary fruit and substantial tannins, but the core of very pure fruit and the fine overall balance indicate this should be really great in 7-10 years. I am somewhat mystified why Chapoutier might be a controversial winemaker, since this seems to be an impeccably balanced, structured wine with great aging potential. Scored a conservative 93, I could see this easily going to 94 or 95. Very impressive juice!
