Friendsgiving Dinner (Schur House - Riverwoods IL): All red fruit, fleshy and earthy with plenty of Vosne styled spice. Good richness and depth, this is at a perfect place combining g freshness and maturity in exceptional harmony.

The End of the Golden Weather: a pre-COVID-19 Visit to Central Otago in Autumn 2020: I served the two 1999s as a pair double blind. Another major step up in quality with this pair. On opening, the wine was earthy, umami and savoury, with five spice on the nose. With five hours air, it was a brilliant wine, still earthy and umami but elegant and refined yet deep, with mainly red berry and cherry fruit layers. A Maupertui still with years to go (the winemakers typically picked the pair of wines as 10-15 years younger than 1999). Power and concentration. All class!

I simply did not enjoy this wine. It was so stern and tannic that it tasted like a bad chianti. This bottle left me so confused. It was not flawed, it is a solid vintage and producer. So how is it so disjointed? Then, considering the other reviews, I'm at a total loss. Might have to try another bottle, and will update this note if I do.

The bouquet on the ‘99 Le Grand Maupertui was dramatic in it’s dark, alluring beauty, showing masses of crushed black cherry with cedar and sweet spice, as hints of herbal mint and undergrowth provided a lovely, savory backdrop, followed by a note of olive and brine. On the palate, I found round, silky textures with cool-toned grace, flooding the senses yet kept in check by vibrant acids, as dark red fruits with an orange-spiced twang gave way to mushroom, savory herbs and a hint of residual tannin. The finish was medium in length, still showing remnants of youthful tannin amidst earthy red berries, and spice as the mouth watered for more.

Beautifully mature and hitting its drinking window, with notes of sous-bois, mushroom, forest floor, some dark berries, also red currant, sweet spices, earth, black olive, menthol and some pickling spices. It‘s medium-full bodied, with medium.high acidity providing good freshness and medium+ tannin that is very good quality. Very good length. A very good Clos Vougeot from this great classic vintage. I love it in Burgundy when there is still ample fruit and the tertiary notes of earth, mushroom and underwood are coming in...

Clos Vougeot Lunch (Paradise Valley, AZ USA): Served blind. Smooth, balanced, with ripe fruit. Well balanced, but the table was going gaga for the wine served beside it (which turned out to be 02 De La Tour). I thought they were missing the elegance here -- while I also preferred the De La Tour, I admired the restraint here. To me, the De La Tour was like a great Vosne-Romanee in character, exotic spice, whereas this was like a great Chambolle all flowers and dirt.

PNP into Zalto Burgundy glass (“Leaf” day): Medium bright ruby.
Savoury red and black berry fruits. Some soy and spices but profile quite different from the Echezeaux tasted earlier - more VR-like and “flavoured spice” compared to the white peppery notes from the Echezeaux.
Very flavourful on the palate with notes largely consistent with nose. Firmer and good length to the slightly spicy and woody finish.
Overall this feels very youthful to me. 93-94 points to me.

Frustratingly tight, with pretty aromas of spice and coffee, eventually coaxing out some sweet strawberry and sappy dark fruit. Appealing medium-light weight, plush texture, softening tannins. Another '99 that needs more time?

Black colour and fruit profile. Super chewy and dry on the palate. Highly extracted. Softened a bit with air but this was another 99 that simply needs a lot more time.

Gregg's bday @'Formentos. Very good and surprisingly young. A focused structured wine with intense dark fruits and zippy lingering spices. Nice lift and complexity. Drinking quite well, but may still have some upside. Beat out the 1998 and the 2002 served along side. Although, really liked the lushness of the 2002 as well.

Gregg's Belated Birthday (Formento's - Chicago IL): In 98/99/02 vertical flight. What a great flight, each expressing the producer and vintage beautifully. Very ripe and powerful fruit and enticing spice. Slight signs of evolution, probably less mature than I'd expect from Anne Gros at 15+ yo. At a great place now. This was most others' fav of the flight, but I slightly preferred the 2002 for its potential.

Much better than the last bottle I tasted. Very dense and ripe red and black fruit. The fruit was quite coiled and wasn't letting out any of the detail underneath. This is impressive but needs time.

Burg Dinner with Friends (Formento's - Chicago IL): Best bottle of this wine I can ever recall trying. Red fruit and brown spice, this is starting to mature, while retaining lots of background structure. In its peak drinking window.

Very perfumed nose of raspberries, blue fruit and iron. An interesting wine where the fruit was very forward, but the midpalate and finish were lean and a bit dried out. Pleasant enough but not what you would expect from the vintage and producer.

My score seems a bit higher than many peoples', but I have to say that I was absolutely blown away by this bottle... Such depth, concentration and complexity! First of all, at 14 years old, it is still a baby. Huge tannins and structure. We tasted it blind and I guess far far younger than 1999. Dark fruits mixed with spices and clove add to the thick, viscous, beautiful texture and mouthfeel. A memorable bottle.

Last bottle from my first purchase of this wine. First bottle was corked, but second was in good shape, with perfect cork and fill. Our of the bottle this was thin and unyielding. Took 2 hours before it really gave much. At the 3 hour mark it was showing good, cool fruit and a bit of earth but still plenty of tannin. This is still on the restrained side, and would wait a few years before trying another. A-/?

Needs coaxing, but on the nose it's all there, spice, hint of coffee and, for once it really is there, crushed violets. Palate is clean fresh and lively with pure cherry and bramble. Long, finishes spicy again, juniper. The fruit and acidity made this wonderful match for duck, no sauce. Very unevolved, needs some years to gain flesh and subtlety. Lovely tannic grip finish, still austere I think this needs another decade, sorry to say. Not sure my remaining bottles will make it.

Decanted over 3 hours. Brooding nose of wet earth and black fruit, somewhat subdued. Medium to full-bodied, brambly-textured, still very youthful. Dense but not heavy, nice balancing structure. A lot of fruit, notes of coffee, graphite. Much better with the lamb dish which softened the wine. This wine needs another 5 years, but should have an exciting future.

Gros Family "Reunion" with Richebourg and Clos Vougeot++ (Boka - Chicago IL): Served single blind with similarly aged "Gros family" CV. Perplexing wine. Red and black fruit was rather muted and spice was a shadow of how this has tasted before. We wondered if it was possibly slightly corked but it didn't fade further with more air. But inconsistent with previous bottles, just around 87 points tonight.

Dark ruby color; My notes very similar to Alex G's bottle with superb Vosne spice and florals on the nose and intense black cherry and a hint of raspberry fruit around a core of minerals. Complex and elegant with good concentration and a long finish. Rather young in presentation. Drink now or hold indefinitely.

Very dark ruby red. Earthy on the nose with black cherry and cocoa notes. Concentrated flavors with black cherry, blackberry and an interesting floral note (violets!). A tannic youngster with a long finish. I really liked this one and bought some for long-term cellaring.
