Second bottle not corked. Tanned leather, blackberries, mint, cinnamon and an overall floral tone. Earthy, grilled berry and black tea, moderately tannic palate. Would benefit from another 3-5 years aging.

Decanted for hours but still too young to let loose its full showing. However, more than a glimpse of greatness was presented. A rich bouquet of flowers, cherry and tar on the nose, all of which and more followed on the palate - albeit in a still tightly wound but smooth package. Really looking forward to coming back to this toward the end of this decade when it should really be strutting its stuff. The 93 is a today score. This wine could easily hit a 95 later.

Deep ruby red. Sweet red berries, tar, roses, delicate and fragrant. A perfect blend of fruit, spice and earth. Soft and fleshy, delicate yet long and resonant. Red, black and blue fruits backed by fine furry tannins. Approachable yet seemingly with years ahead. Delicious.

Medium brick/tawny color. Floral berried nose. Very well structured with the tannins approachable but firm and enough acidity to carry through the finish. Palate isn’t very deep, with tar, red fruit, and flowers. Held well over nearly 24 hours.

Red brought by SH, drank after the 2010 Rostaing Landonne & I swear this was a Northern Rhone too, opened for a few hours, felt young thought a Bruno Giacosa around 2007, superb Barolo with power, structure & finesse, has improved much since last bottle 5 yrs ago & should get better 94-95

A Summer Giacosa Dinner (Spinasse, Seattle): Double decanted 6 hours earlier. Ruby. Oak and dark cherry. Young, excellent fruit, but monochromatic although it did improve with more air.

Best Barolo wine I’ve had in a long time. I’ve lost faith that Barolo serves a purpose vs Burgundy. For me they are both about aromatics and elegance but I think Burgundy is substantially better at both. This wine is a counterpoint, offering an experience Burgundy does not. This evolved in the glass, over the evening and the next day. I expected it would get tannic with air as young Barolos often do but it did only for a brief phase. This was a rare Barolo for which the added structure and power vs a Burgundy expanded the experience. I felt it had the Musigny iron fist in a velvet glove. I else enjoyed the umami on the palate and caramel notes on the nose. Aldo’s decision to keep bottling this single vineyard is a no brainer. I liked it better than any Granbussia I’ve had. Certainly drinking well now but should last as well.

Among other top "modernist" producers, this held its own nicely. Beautiful wine after even just an hour in the decanter, with a floral nose, well structured but easily approachable now. Drinking grest.
Very fragrant and floral. Enjoyed with world champion cracked black pepper cheese from Wisconsin. When the food was gone this was bone dry and a completely different wine (and made me want to save it with some more cheese). No score. Last bottle was a 93, but again I drank it with a meal.

2004 Piedmont Theme dinner at Solo Ristorante. Drank in Conterno Sensory. Bordeaux decant done back into bottle beforehand. Very fine sediment eliminated. Appearance pale intensity, ruby colour with garnet rim. Legs. Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of initial blast of fresh rose flowers, fresh fine tar, earth, fresh red cherries. Progressed to dark violets, dark red cherries, and persistent tar at the dinner. Developing. On the palate, dry, vibrant high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14.5%), very refined structured high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet red plums, lovely dancing sour red cherries, sweet tar and earth, background minerals. At the dinner, violets tar dark red cherries + sweet plums. VA emerging with more air also only to recede on day 2/3. Very very long finish. Excellent quality. My favourite of the 2004 line-up on account of its vibrancy and freshness and complexity. Has a long runway.
Wow. This one was just stunning. At their best, Romirasco matches Granbussia. This bottle certainly did. Ofcourse, it is ~70% the same wine minus some blending. Masculine, rich and clean without too much plum from extraction.

Apologies to Anthony Burgess. The Bishop having been rather pre-occupied this Easter week, I found myself languidly pleasuring myself and then thoughts turned to more substantial needs - Barolo was the answer.
On day 1 this rather jaunty fellow was showing ripe fruit, almost porty, but held in check by some refreshing acid bodice and the usual rather plentiful tannins. Like another reviewer I have often felt sure that there are oak elements at play in both the nose and texture, but read anything about this maker and it will say that is one thing you won't find them engaging in. I think what you have is some very sophisticated and detailed wine making that produces ripe and very textured wine without needing to revert to oak for cheap tricks.
I have a difficult relationship with these wines. I find that I love them one moment then I long for a slightly hard edged Neb experience.
On day 2 I think this shows much more pure Neb character. There's a little more Thyme, a hint of tar but still the very pure fruit. the tannins are fine and don't kick in until after you swallow and they are wonderful with food. The length and intensity are exemplary. You could score this higher but I am tight with my 'Outstanding' ratings.
I think this is a good intro to Barolo for the neophyte and perhaps it is also a good wine for the more travelled palate. For those in between, like me it might be more tricky. The fault is in the drinker not the wine. I am put in mind of Gordon Lightfoot's wonderful 'The Watcher' - interesting that Bob Dylan rates Gordon so highly he travelled to Canada to induct him into their heroes of Canadian something or other. Maybe the same applies to Aldo Conterno's wines. And at the end of it all, Barolo remains the answer to my introduction.
Decanted the bottle, which was acquired on release, for 6 hours, then poured back into the bottle and shared with friends at a NYE dinner at a local restaurant. The wine was excellent and likely will show well for at least 10 years. Perfect nose and color, rich in the mouth and a long finish. I am grateful to have a few more. I will likely reduce the breathing time a bit as the bottles age, for what that is worth. Outstanding.

Magnum that upon opening was already giving a lot; decanted in a magnum decanter for a couple hours before dinner.
Nose: High- toned red and black fruits that have a driving mineral verve. Tar and lilacs are omnipresent and it smells like it was etched out of a mountain of berry chalk.
Taste: Crunchy red fruit with predominant cranberry and black cherry. This is high toned and has a great core of balsamic red cherry with linear fine tannins which run through the fruit like colors through white granite. The oak, which I typically don’t like with my Nebbiolo is there but it does not detract from the typical Nebbiolo markers, rather it adds roundness to the texture. There is real concentration here which lets you know that this is a special vineyard.
Overall: I love this wine. It is reaching its apogee and should drink well for the next 10+ years.
These Barolo are the most sensitive things. My small kitchen wine fridge-24 bottles went to 78 degrees for 24 hours with power outages last week. I have been drinking the exposed wines up to not let the heat be an issue. This wine was dark and muddy color and flavors, wildly different from the previous bottles purchased. Hope this is the answer. The other bottles are safely stored in the 58-61 degrees cellar,
SO'd for several hrs then double decanted for 2 hrs, med. ruby with a light rim, roses on the nose, black cherry on the palate, med/firm tannins, long finish; delicious, drink or preferably hold

Not much fun ! Just potential ! Soooo young and closed for business. Even after 5 h of decanting there was only tar, flowers and very dark fruits. And acid !!!! Lot of acid. This will last forever. OMG Drank the last half on the second night. Not much improvement ! But in the back of the cellar and wait ! MInimum 5 years.

Direkt vor dem Probieren geöffnet. - Nach 2007 Voerzio Sarmassa getrunken. Wahnsinn. Gleiche Liga aber doch so unterschiedlich. - Klar. Schlank. Kein bisschen Alterungserscheinungen. Jetzt so zu trinken wie ich ihn mag. Weniger weich und eckiger als der Voerzio. - Einfach klasse und auch ein toller Vergleich von Monteforte versus Barolo.

Third and final bottle of this gorgeous Barolo. Both kids were home from college for the weekend and we made homemade Pizza dough and decided to rock it with an incredible Barolo. Pizza came out really good, and the pairing was spot on. The last three notes were spot on. Brandy, blood orange, brown sugar, tar, balsamic notes, cranberry are all present. The finish still has a grip that is a little bitter that time will iron out. Overall, just a beauty of a wine.

96pts. I've had a previous bottle of this Romirasco a year and a half ago, and rated it 93(+?)pts because it was not giving much, but the potential was there. And it has been realized, at least in this latest bottle I've had. This is a butterfly now, with lots of cassis and black cherry, tar and spices, and velvety tannins. It dances in the mouth. Really glad to see it develop like this.

'95/'96 Champagne Celebration (Casa Gill): A year since I had this, and my note is much the same. Gorgeous blood orange and tar on the nose, with dark red fruit. Still very young, and dark, brooding and a bit rough on the finish. But loads of potential.

Very young, even for a 14 year old. Lots of Chocloate and oak. A medium to sweet palatte with a full body and high tannins. This is young and will last decades. It is big and bold and has a bright future. Give this another 10 years at least. Drink 2030-2050+

Compared to the other older Barolos this was a baby, still primary, and somewhat one-dimensional at this point. I believe this could be in a dumb phase. Leave for at least until 2024 IMHO. Structure and all leaves great potential. 92-94

This was enjoyed by everyone tonight but I think more time will make this even more incredible.
It was loaded with rich, dark fruit aromas and flavors but it had more lurking behind the wall of fruit and prominent tannins. Drink now for hedonism or hold for ..... even more hedonism!

A great bouquet of red cherries, savoury, perfumed, still young, full of class, drinks like a 2013 Barolo, this be one hell of a Barolo in 2025-2030 94+

I didn't think this would still drink so young, but it did. It still needs a couple of years to mature properly, but probably much more. Even after decanting for 4+ hours its tannins were a bit harsh. So, if you must open one now, be prepared to give it lots and lots of air.
2004 is considered to be a structured vintage, and the same can be said about Barolo from Monforte. So it was no surprise to see that this wine has a great structure and beautiful intensity, but not a lot of complexity. It is definitely not floral, and its notes show more dark than red fruit - I found blackberry, black cherries and a bit of blackcurrant, with almost no tertiary flavors. It can definitely still improve, but I don't think it will ever achieve greatness. Lacks elegance. 93pts tops for now.
Served blind by JR and I was guessing 2013 - this is how young this one still is, immensely concentrated in a semimodern style, notes of tar, coffee chocolate, kirsch, yet dry and firm. This has years to go and one ought to wait, really. 94+ point. #Søllerød #NewYear

M+M's Housewarming Party (M+M. Robin Road): Still all about potential, but this is a superb wine. Smoke and flowers, red cherries and tarry mineral, all wound together in a tight nose and a deep, pure, muscular palate. Power and transparency, depth and length - this has always been beautiful balanced and integrated, but it is still has a tremendous amount of tight, sinewy reserve, with lots of acidity and fine, firm, chewy tannins forming a really solid structural feel around the fruit that will take years and years to soften yet. No harm drinking now with a good meat dish, but this is a wine for the decades.

Polished and suave version, a hint of oak smoothness. Both young and accessible, this evolved nicely in the glass and had superb length. Initially quite classic barolo, even a little disappointing given the reputation of this bottling. As the wine evolved during the night it seemed more burgundian and this should have so much life ahead of it. Accessible now yes but surely far from peak.
Classic Barolo with modern touch. Nail polish and iron on the nose with intense and compact fruit (cherry and wild strawberry) underneath. Quite big bodied for a Barolo but the balance is impeccable. Smooth tannins. Wonderful bottle of wine. My feeling is that there is still some room for improvement. Will keep remaining bottle for five years.

Late Night, After Dinner Blind Tasting (House of Nanda - Chicago IL): Very late night, tasted single blind in a flight of four Monforte wines focused on Aldo Conterno. Decanted for 10 hours (?). Best nose of the flight with red cherry, earth, anise, mint and dried thyme. Perhaps slightly more mature than I expected from 2004, but that is a good thing in this case, because it clearly had the best balance and weight combination of the flight. I'd probably rather have the 2008 Colonello in my cellar, but this was close behind.

Blinds with friends (Chicago, IL): Served single blind in a flight of four Monforte wines focused on Aldo Conterno. Decanted for 8-9 hours. First of a 6-pack. A lot going on in the full nose -- with rich black cherry, menthol, spearmint and tar. Nice polish to the fruit. Good lift and energy, despite the richness and concentration. Surprisingly generous and giving already. Perhaps this won't make the oldest of bones.

Some rainy-day blinds (Chicago, IL): Served blind in a flight of Monforte with a focus on Aldo Conterno. Probably the best of the Monforte flight, but with most of the wines mostly average, it didn't take too much for this to stand out. The nose and palate are fairly resolved, with a slight touch of black cherry ice cream. Surprisingly dark for a 2004, there wasn't much that stood out to me here -- this was a good, if unexciting Barolo.

2004 Barolo Blind Retrospective (i Truli, NYC): This has always been a very different wine, always showing an exotic profile. On this night, I was less impressed than in previous experiences. Here I found a pretty expression on the nose with sweet spices and dried florals. On the palate, dark red fruits rested upon silky textures with firm tannin that quickly dried the senses. It finished shorter than expected and left an impression of being a more modern-styled wine. I wanted to like it, but something held me back.

This is a blockbuster of a Barolo. Pure class in the glass. Made a great pairing with the 04 A Conterno Barolo and a brasato al Barolo (no, not made with a btl of A Conterno but rather an 06 Mauro Barolo). There is just a laser beam focus here of dark fruits, leather, tar, and licorice. It is stacked but the tannins melted significantly with a couple hours in the decanter. The finish goes on forever. This is on the early side, but drinking really beautifully.

Initially very closed, dark and angry. After 12 hours of slow o, followed by a double decant, and opening in the glass, this showed big red and black fruit, spice, spice, iron and a long smooth finish. Really remarkable, 5-10 years away.

Tasted at a dinner and paired lovely with lamb roast and white truffle potatoe mash. Quite closed upon opening, after 2,5hrs decant far more expressive and enjoyable. Still somewhat youthful with prominent (although fading) fruit and acidity. Deep and still some tough tannins left. At the same time definitely evolved, but think it needs some more years to get through to next stage where this wine will for sure elevate.

the notes from Robert P and Cards and Wine below are spot on. The only thing I would add is to decant this at least 90 minutes. Brought to dinner and decanted and the additional time allowed the wine to blossom and show layers of depth and the finish picked up quite a bit. This wine blew us away. Perfect balance, subtle tannins, serious depth of flavors. It was outstanding with and without food. I wish I bought a case from the KL sale....

Let sit open for 2 hours and then decanted for another 1.5 hours. This is a handsome wine; big, powerful with concentrated fruit, but with a supple integration that works from beginning to end of each sip. The nose had strong intentions where fruit can out. Comparing to a couple other truly outstanding Barolo's on recent occasions, I would say my current score reflects a little less complexity and nuance in the nose. There was spice, but there were a few less dimensions to explore in this Conterno. I hate to give caveats on such a great wine because it was great. Somehow it was just not quite as great as another.

We popped 21 bottles of Cru Barolo - 2004 tonight, in order to really dig into the real details of the communes, with this horizontal tasting. Big and rich nose. Concentrated & perfumed with acetone, dark cherries, orange, mint, pine needles, tobacco, rose garden and violets. Some bass notes deep down, with truffles, mushrooms, damp forest floor, coffee and oak spices. Palate is big, deep and ripe, showing ripe raspberries and cherries, tobacco and leather, some fine oak spices and wonderful tannins and acidity for a superb balance. Did perhaps not show quite as good and completely of the charts as the bottle I had a year ago, but still a really great Barolo from one of my favorite producers. Also, tonight’s other competition perhaps was a bit too hard, hence the lower score compared to last time I had it. (95 – 98)

Excellent showing. Opens bright and lively, with concentrated aromas of floral, soil and red/dark fruits; some spice adds complexity. With some time in the glass, this settles down and the intensity of aromas recedes, but in its place comes complexity - the wine just does not let up. Ten years from now this is going to go from very good to excellent; impressive now for those with no patience. HOLD. highly recommended
Served non-blind; Double-decanted in the morning, then Audozed 2-3 hours immediately before service ~ 3pm.

Nose had a portlike richness, almost a dehidrated prune quality, very exotic with some VA. It was not quite a pretty as some of the other AC's that i have had. Still a great showing, with tar, violet, tea leaf, clove. it will be very fun to see these bottles evolve over time. @Banyan Tree Maui
-- decanted for approx. 2 hours before tasting -- -- tasted a couple pours non-blind over approx. 45 minutes --
This showed very nicely after a couple hours in the decanter, although still very young (no signs of age yet); red-fruited; cherry Twizzlers; wonderful fruit/acid/tannin/alc. balance --- I imagine this will continue to drink well for a long time. Drink or Hold.

Dinner at Villa Tiboldi, Roero. Lovely, exclusive and deep nose full of beautiful glue and acetone, pine needles, orange, truffles, flowers, mushrooms, wet forest floor & earth. A completely insane perfume lingers over it all, with beautiful sweet flowers. Some coffee and chocolate is also present. On the palate this is as lovely as on the nose. Buttery and fat chalky minerals, sweet ripe fruit, superb acidity to balance the fine sweetness, and a super killer length. Rather developed and ready, even if this is still young. This is a big wine, and very beautiful indeed. This , ladies and gentlemen ,is a super Barolo, at its best! (97 – 99)
First sip is wow- these wonderful dark, earthy tones mimic the 01 Granbussia... Ah ha this is the 04 Granbussia juice- all makes sense. The classic approach here combined with deep, textured notes of charcoal, petrol, leather, conneticut shade tobacco and graphite make this a special style barolo. This is still young, it will get even better, you should find it. Reccomend 3-5 hr decant.

Decanted one hour. Wonderful nose of roses, menthol, and citrus. On the palate, a coconut note that fades with time in the decanter, plus red berries, roses, bitter orange, and some lightly prickly tannins; the finish is long and mouthwatering. This is already exceptional, but it clearly has room to improve as it integrates. I will wait three to five years before trying another bottle.

Welcome Back Kelvin! (Kelvin and Joyce's Place, Bishan): A superb young Barolo. Popped-and-poured blind (we should have decanted it for a few hours actually), it seemed to have shut-down substantially from the last time I tried this in 2011, but it was still so impressive that I had little hesitation guessing it as the 2004 Romirasco – there are very few young Baroli that have captured my imagination in the way the last bottle did. On the night, this had an absolutely beautiful nose, full of dark cherries and red berries, a lift of orange peel, drifts of smoky ash and earth and tiny hint of chocolatey oak, all surrounded by a suggestion of rose petals. The aromas were a bit warmer, less high-toned then I remembered them being, but it could be because the wine was served a little too warm as well. The palate too seemed to be shutting down, showing a lot less friendly and complex than the previous outing, but it was still lovely even then. Very clear, very clean, with pure flavours of red cherries, cranberries and sour plums accompanied by another twist of that orange peel picked up on the nose. This was still very primary and not altogether yet integrated, but there was a superb clarity here that really set the wine apart. Here, we had a full-on wine with large-scale flavours and great depth, yet it was also effortlessly powerful, with a really elegant, lovely structure that gave the wine a sense of supple softness – an iron first in velvet glove. It was all so expertly balanced as well that one could not tell for a moment that it carried some 14.5% alcohol. Soild stuff. The finish was perhaps where the imposingly youthful structure of the wine showed the most clearly though, filling the back-palate as it did with chewy, gum-coating tannins and juicy acidity setting the frame for long pull of smoky ash, orange peel and a final touch of roses. In its infancy, perhaps even falling asleep, but I am sure glad I have a few bottles of this tucked away in the cellar. This is one of those wines you ferret away for 15 - 20 years and relish when they finally mature.

Consumed in Canada at Lake cabin. Decanted 4 hours, classic tar and rose nose, nice sweet dark red fruit on the palate, obviously young, but drinking well with long decant.
Decanted 3 plus hours. Dark. Cedar, scorched earth, blueberries, bacon fat, and raspberries. Super complex and age worthy. Needs another five to ten years in the cellar. Should soften. 94 to 96.

Decanted and poured, this wine gave an excellent to outstanding showing on the bouquet and a very good to excellent showing on the palate. The bouquet offers a complex mix of dark fruits, spice, mocha, tar, and floral notes. During the course of consumption the the bouquet evolves and reveals its multiple layers. The medium (full) bodied palate shows structure and reserve. Unlike the bouquet, it mostly stays stoic and brooding with firm tannin structure on the finish. The palate does develop with airing suggesting that this wine will benefit from additional bottle age. This bottle suggests that on this occasion the wine would have benefited from additional time in the decanter.

Beautiful nose of dark cherries, warm asphalt and mint. Tight and grippy and still quite structured with a firmly tannic finish. The tannins are perfectly ripe and the wine has incredible flavors of iodine, eucalyptus, dark cherries, tar and red spices and it is very finely-textured and already complex. This is a gorgeous bottle of Barolo that should continue to blossom and soften over time but it is drinkable now with food. At Del Posto. 94+

1st Morel Dinner. Served with 2 courses: Duck confit with creamed corn and morels. Beef tenderloins, braised oxtail, roasted leeks and of course morels. Boy am I glad I rolled the dice with K&L last summer. This bottle had a solid cork with no streaking. Very little sediment. Decanted for 4 hrs. Upon opening, nose was a bit muted, and the palate was deft. 4 hrs in the decanter, then poured back in bottle to serve.
Upon popping the cork for dinner, all I could think was WOW! Agree with others when they mention it was explosive. YEAH! NO KIDDING! I was almost afraid to taste and just swirled and smelled it for 5 minutes. Very primary aromas of roses, tar, vanilla and spices perfumed the air and brought me to my knees.
I'm not even going to try to explain the palate of this, as All I could think of was, this must be what liquid cashmere tastes like. I know it's not a flavor profile, but in company of great friends, it becomes a night of experiences, not flavor profiles. I've never had a bottle of Barolo like this one. From previous tasting notes, I was worried the tannins would be too overwhelming to enjoy. Not the case for this after the decant, it is very inviting on the palate. Great night, great friends.
Barolos (Becky's House): Very dark red color. Decanted 3 hrs. Drank 1 glass over 2 hours. This was an impressive wine, very complex and exciting. The nose shows scorched earth, vanilla bean, dry wood, leather, briary. The palate is elegant, mint, bright berry, medium body, lots of anise, oak, spices, long finish. All of this is wrapped up around a core of currently grippy tannins. My WOTN and group #2 WOTN. 94(+)pts

The score is for what the wine currently is, not what I believe it will be with 5-10 more years of age. Paired at dinner with a veal dish and a pheasant dish, and decanted for 2.5-3 hours prior to serving. Explosive nose from 2 ft away from the glass with classic scent of roses and cherries, but even after a multi hour decant the tannins were still harsh and not fully resolved. Also currently a bit hot, which I hope will moderate with a few more years in cellar. A good wine now, but one that I think can be great in a few years.

A lovely Barolo poured at the K&L Italian wine tasting. Wine from 1.5l and decanted six hours in advance of tasting. Wonderful vintage too. Nice dark color. Certainly noticed lots of rose in the nose along with tons of floral elements, plus cedar. Very inviting and very nice. The wine is rich in taste too, with a huckleberry/mulberry element that I liked, but found surprising. Perhaps it is the richness of the rose and other floral elements that made it seem to possess the aforementioned dark berry fruits. Also tasted at bit of tannin and iron in the mid palate and just a touch of red apple on the finish. Worth seeking out. 93 Points maybe a point higher.

Winning bottle in our wne group's big annual double blind contest. At first i thought this might be a burg or even a classy CA pinot from the nose, but the palate didnt match. Then on second sniff i got that it was either barolo or barbaresco. On the palate this feels young now but smooth, with bright red fruits. Lovely stuff 94 with a + for the future.

let's get one thing out of the way first: this and a traditionally made barolo (b. and g. mascarello, beppe rinaldi..) have not much in common. I say this as I often approach an aldo conterno bottle not sure what style to expect. This is a much darker, powerful, nearly brooding wine that oozes power and class. dark fruits and tar with more than a hint of oak. Outstanding and will be a joy to follow over the years.

Plenty of great notes on this already - for me, this is the best Barolo I have ever tasted. Nose was out of this world - rose petals / tar / black cherry (nose had lots more to it but I"m limited in describing what was there). Full bodied yet silky - black cherry / tar / smoke on palate leading to a very long finish. I loved this wine. Wine was opened just before the tasting.94+ rating.

Aldo Conterno Tasting (Beam Global, Mountbatten Square): Wow. Absolutely superb. This was opened for 2.5 hours before serving like the rest of the Barolos, but it was a world away from anything else we had yet tried in the tasting. This was so good that it has become a reference point Pidemont for me. Deeper, darker, more powerful, than the straight Barolos, the nose here showed glorious scents of dark cherries, earth, meat, some tar and lovely wafting flower accent with violets at the forefront. One sniff, and this just socks you and draws you in. On to the palate then, one sip, and I was even more taken away. This was really something else. It had a such a sense of presence and power, with complex layers of dark cherries soaked in a little wood and earth that initially caressed and ultimately enveloped the entire palate. Such great depth, yet it was so well-formed, so transparent and so impeccably balanced that it was always lithe, elegant, one would almost say ethereal if not for an undrecurrant of earthy power - an archetypal iron fist in a velvet glove, gliding its way into a finish that went on and on and on. There were some teeth-coating tannins here, but the balance and the integration between structure and lush fruit was so wonderful that you barely noticed it. Shockingly drinkable at the moment, but I would love to try this again in 10-15 years time. I thought ths was even better than the highly rated 2001 Granbussia tasted alongside. A masterpiece, and possibly the best Aldo Conterno wine I have had to date. The irony is that this was the first Romirasco bottling since 1993. The grapes from the Romirasco cru usually form the backbone (some 70%) of Aldo Conterno's top-cuvee, the Granbussia, along with a smattering of grapes from the Cicala and Colonello crus. It was only because of hail wiping out much of the Cicala harvest in 2004 that a single cru Romirasco was produced. A blessing in disguise maybe - this was just a fantastic wine.

WFA 2009; 10/22/2009-10/28/2009: Inkish , stemy with lots ofs youthful tannins. Hard to dissect now. Definitely a keeper with powerful strong personality. At the moment, the coffee oak dominates but already there are lots of fresh, lively sour cherries on the palate providing the acidity needed to balance off.

2004 A Conterno Barolo Romirasco vs 2006 Marengo Barolo Brunate Riserva:

Tasted at a dinner and paired lovely with lamb roast and white truffle potatoe mash. Quite closed upon opening, after 2,5hrs decant far more expressive and enjoyable. Still somewhat youthful with prominent (although fading) fruit and acidity. Deep and still some tough tannins left. At the same time definitely evolved, but think it needs some more years to get through to next stage where this wine will for sure elevate.

Went better with the duck course.
My other bottles will not be touched til 2020.

WOTN among 5 other young Barolo's. None of the are ready to drink, but nevertheless they are wonderful with the right foods. This has a long way to go, but you can't mistake this for anything but a big-boy Barolo..

Game dinner with a very large group (@ TM): Beautiful wine with some earthiness, red as well as black fruits, beautiful oak and very much a good example of a concentrated and complex Barolo. A truly great wine already and probably for another decade.

An Aldo Conterno Evening (The Ledbury, London): Hotter and more substantial than the Colonello, even more tannic, but even better - a brilliant young barolo

Ok this will be great but think too early to drink. However, there is real complexity here to be discovered and great length. IWFS dinner.

Wonderful wine - it evolved amazingly over six hours in the decanter. Complex, deep, and powerful, this wine needs time.

let's get one thing out of the way first: this and a traditionally made barolo (b. and g. mascarello, beppe rinaldi..) have not much in common.

A fantastic Barolo. Wonderful nose of dark red fruit together with tar and roses. It has a lot of fruit power and weight in the mouth, yet good structure with firm tannins. Lovely now, but will certainly become far better with some cellaring

Deep ruby color, cherry notes, a bit more closed on the nose but more concentrated and stronger tannins. Good aging potential. Important wine.

Still very young. We let it decant for 2 hrs. Strong tannins, long nose, floral, with lite cherry and cranberries. It still needs a few more years of cellar time.
