Vin superlatif: rien a enlever rien a rajouter. Un equilibre et une fraicheur sans pareil avec une immense finale. Dejeuner entre amis sur cote de boeuf au bbq, a côté d’un Monfortino 1964 et Rousseau Ruschottes 2007….

Soft nose with leather, soy, umami. If I tasted this blind I would have guessed a high end Barolo from the 50s or 60s. Some blood and earth. Rustic is the best way. Highly complex and nuanced. Incredible wine in every aspect. Color is perfect with some slight rim variation. Plenty of life left in this wine. Came from Pablo directly so condition was impeccable.

Earthy complexion with dark fruit and celery root noes. Brooding personality. Moderate acidity on the dry-ish finish. Opened one hour in advance. Bottle from bodega.

Unico tasting (27 different vintages) at the Rheingau Gourmet Festival 2017: Like the 1940 vintage bottle this wine looked opaque brown colored; malty and a nose stinging fruity smell; surprinsigly in the mouth a well blanced, medium bodied wine with a juicy texture, rounded up by medium acidity. This wine improved in the glass considerably.

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Tasted double blind. Incredible aromatic start of dried rose, mushroom, cigarbox, espresso, red cherry. Flavors of mushroom, lingering red cherry, licorice and pepper wit no signs of oxidation. i thought this from the 60s or early 70s, others thought it even younger. Bottle fill was into the neck. Lots of acid really came through middle to finish, perhaps a bit prominent, but helping give great texture. Long finish. Thanks, Kevin!

Birthyear wine. Pristine bottle with great provenance. Difficult to put into words. Very dark with bricking, but appears MUCH younger than 68. Licorice, leather, tobacco, coffee, cigar box…on and on with different aromas. No hint whatsoever of oxidation ( even the next day). So complex. Very ripe with sweet dark fruits on the palate. Lengthy finish. Thank you Jon!! Red wine of the night for me and a very unique wine experience.

Essentially Madeira, but with a little patience, it really is a pleasing wine. Not the Unico you've come to know and love, but essentially a "Rico-esque" Madeira.

Vega-Sicilia library wines with proprieters and Michael Broadbent (Christies NYC): Tawny color - clean and clear. A light funk on the nose that blew off in a few minutes. This wine started with acid notes on the nose that developed into tea aromas. The palate was the winner of these older wines. It had sherry and Madeira qualities once again. The balance was Devine. Slight singed qualities - again scorched earth and time.. A strong tea flavor developed and I enjoy this wine over the next 30 minutes with some hints of nutty and tree bark nuances. Delightful.

Vega Sicilia Masterclass with Xavier Ausas (London): My empty bottle says a mere 12,000 bottles made. 75% tempranillo, 15% cabernet sauvignon. Of course it looks fully mature, with an orangey rim, but it's certainly not overly brickish. Some volatile acidity on the nose and I suppose naturally enough a bit of oxidation, but rather interesting with some complex depths and a touch port-like. On the palate, it's difficult to believe this is 61 years old: there is so much life and vitality and there's still plenty of red fruit in there. Soft buttery tannins with a sweetness of fruit to it. I found a touch of spirit on the finish.

Oxidized and feeble despite a low neck fill. It looks like there can be huge bottle variation with this wine.

2002 dinner. Ringer that was totally Madeirized despite ex-domaine origin.

wow. Never had a wine like this before. Almost (almost) youngish. Amazing for a wine made in 1942.
very delightful. Stunning.
