Better than a previous bottle from the same source last year but not noted. Fairly coarse though and lacks focus. Much better with protein. Rather difficult to remember the next day.

Huge nose of ripe black and red cherries, cèpes de Bdx, forest floor, BBQ angus, rasted meat, salty finish... Super delicious, loads of ripe red cherries with salty and refreshing finish, finish 45 sec, great great Chateauneuf!!

Kirsch, jam, figs, herbs, and liqueur notes on the nose and palate popped with ease. There is a touch of heat and raisiny red fruits that protrudes. I liked this much better several years ago. If you have a bottle, it is time to drink up.

No prunyness whatsoever, just, deep, concentrated Grenache, keeps going;the balance is fine, the fruit is sur maturité, and I dont see this declining at all; on the contrary, wait some years, and it will -I think - see a more elegant side. #Møntergade #HSA

Good wine, but very rich soft broad, lower tannins, typical '03. Pruniness just starting although in great shape for '03. Not a big fan but drinking well nonetheless. Sandy's old champagnes dinner.

The initial pour was quite nice. Soft, round, balanced and loaded with kirsch and herbs. But after perhaps 30 minutes in the glass, the wine took on fig, raisin and chocolate sensation that overwhelmed any of the remaining red fruits. If you own this wine, drink it sooner than later, from your cellar and in the glass. This is not a good trajectory for the future I a sad to say.

Really intense, concentrated and gravelly, this ‘03 version is less civilized than the suave ‘06 to which we compared it. Somewhere in the middle of the tasting there was a burst of very ripe black fruit which was extremely attractive. Too bad it vanished like the sun ducking behind a cloud. A good match for the tenderloin of wild boar at La Brochette. Promising.

Decanted and served with dinner. This took an hour or so to open up and then it kept improving. Silky kirsch and chocolate on the palate. Concentrated, new-world style fruit still singing after 16 years. Delicious but not for those looking for subtle complexity in an aged wine.

Decanted one hour and served. Interesting mix of old world and new that evolved throughout the evening. Deep musk, leather, light tobacco and red currant on the nose. Bold dark fruit in that palate with nicely balanced acid. 94+

Decanted for a good hour. Served blind. We all went towards a new world wine, Napa Syrah/Grenach blend, Alban level and the likes from the mid/late 2000s. This is a massive wine, true to its 2003 pedigree, rich, jammy and very different to any other Marcoux VV we have tried which are usually on the soft side. The wine requires a lover of these massive beasts to appreciate for us it was a bit over the top and also felt a bit tiring at times given how muscular and rich it was. Mayeb we had this a bit too old and this would have been a lot better when it was fresher and younger but definitely not the 99/95/19/96 wine the critics have rated it it. But again not our style. 92-93

Dark ruby color. Aromatic nose, cherry, blackberry, anise and dried flowers. Ripe palate of jammy raspberry, cherry cola, kirsch, and orange peel. Rich and viscous texture - tannins mostly resolved. Long finish.
Still drinking decidedly young, the ripeness of the vintage showing. Ready now, this improved over the time we drank it, would allow for a longer decant if the venue allows. Really incredible CdP on this evening, showed well against diverse and strong competition....

Initially quite heavy, some alcohol – no prunes, but the hallmark of a rich vintage. Grenache galore, very thick, dense - and lovely. Approaching maturity – and I don’t see this going in the direction of the 1990, that had me (almost) guessing Rayas earlier; on day 2, still very full, but the heat is evident here now (even when served at 14 degrees C), and in general this is less fresh than last experiences. This might not keep too well, I am in doubt …

Five years ago I gave a 98 point rating to the 1990 Jaboulet, holding back on an even higher score because I thought I might taste a better wine at some point in my life. This is certainly that wine! A stunning wine today, so much so that it is hard to imagine it could possibly get better. But it might, as the structure is there for long-term aging. Many existing notes capture the profile of this wine quite well. Decanted for only an hour and then poured through a vinturi.

This really stands out by it own! What a heck of a wine! Usually most of my points go to the body structure but here, even the nose is structured, profiling a velvety robe underlining some fermented cherries -griottes- and plenty of minerals. The mouth goes on and on dancing with the wolves as it literally is a savage wine. A ruby.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with low acidity and some firm tannins. There is some depth lacking along with upfront tones of black cherries, mesquite, hot stones, and licorice.
Overall: I'm not the greatest fan of the vintage, but this is a quality wine. It's drinking fine right now and doesn't feel like it can develop further.

Saturday with David White (Domaine Wine Storage & Sun Wah - Chicago, IL): A really nice surprise. I've been a vocal critic of 2003 CdPs...just too roasted and syrupy. This was lithe, spicy and had a nicely energetic spine to it. The florals were beautiful on this wine and I thought the spice component was exotic and layered.

Wines like this remind me why Marcoux, especially with their Vieille Vignes is one of my favorite Chateauneuf du Pape producers. Fat, lush, ripe and sexy, this ripe wine is filled with jammy black raspberry, garrigue, cherry, wild strawberry, pepper and earthy aromas. Opulent in texture, the wine ends with rich layers of ripe and over ripe, pure red fruits. This is drinking great today. If you have at least a few bottles, there is no reason not to try it. This is pure, bottled, lusty pleasure.

I initially thought this wine was corked, but it was just funky on opening and needed a night of very slow aeration. Once the odd aromas blew off: still very dark ruby with a black core, but now has a slight bricking on the rim. Nose is dominated by raspberry and black cherry fruits, very ripe, with spice and leather and toffee. A creamy aspect (as in Chambord liqueur) that I've noticed previously. Very flavorful and full-bodied, with a sweet, ripe attack (but sweet fruit, not in the sense of sugar). Then a long finish with good but soft tannic structure and tremendous length. From zero on opening to hero: still a 98+ bottle!

If anything, this latest bottle was even more stunning than the one three years ago. I'm more and more convinced that Marcoux VV was the best CDP from the whole apprelation in 2003; if not, it was pretty darn close. Richly colored and satiny, with a profound, balanced, complex nose showing chambord liqueur (a personal favorite of mine), provincal herbs, toffee, leather. Sweet yet dry, alcohol gently wrapped in that satin finish. Wow!

Rich liquourous nose. The heat of 03 is evident. Rich and deep, and a little pruny if picking nits. Rich supple and very structured palate. The tannins are a bit unripe for me, and while very impressive, it is not holding it all together for me. 93 pts.

Deep purple/red. Amazing nose is dominated by sweet creme de framboise, but offers a tremendous range of secondary aromas: cream, all sorts of floral notes (violets jump out), caramel, then hints of tar, spice, provencal herbs. Wave after wave of silky fruit (very ripe red raspberries, plums) with a rich, creamy finish, soft tannins, gentle acids. A lovely wine.

Any TN I could write for this wine would just repeat the TN I wrote a year ago. Still a baby, but already sensational. My score was too low last time. In the spirit of infanticide, our host opened this baby. Dark, dark jeweled ruby with a nose that was at first quite tight. This is a hugely structured, brooding, meaty wine. Anise, black cherries, raspberry and blackberry essence , with almost a liqueur level of extraction. Great, great OV Grenache sap with a stony background. It took this wine 2-3 hours in a decanter to really give it all up. At first the texture was a bit harsh with huge tannins, but this opened into a fabulous wine. Pure, and dare I say, fresh fruit: black cherries and blackberries, more anise- really pushing the dark fruit side of Grenache. Then thyme, bay leaf, and more kirsch. The only possible detractor, aside form its extreme youth, was the tiniest hint of pruniness on the finish. That is splitting the smallest of hairs. This is a fabulous wine that I would not touch for several years. 98 pts

This wine is really sensational; best I've tried yet from 2003. Color is a saturated ruby. Aromas leap from the glass and fill the room. Nose is a ringer for a Taylor port: red currents or framboise liqueur, with a hint of something "sauvage" -- garrigue, musk, truffles. Long, rich, sweet but with just a hint of surmaturite and a slight tannic bitterness. Still, a stunning wine for the vintage.
