Deep, dark and quite intense for a Burgundy with rich blue/cherry fruit. Succulent and crunchy on the finish with complex notes of minerals and dark spices. Really improved with air and stood up nicely to a hearty boeuf bourguignon but it lacks the lacy elegance that I prefer in aged Burgundy. Very youthful so could it come around one day? 89?

Alongside the 2003. More black vs red fruit, while so classically spiced like the finest of Volnay. Dense and powerfully packed with wonderful balance. so engaging now, this is likely to hold well (and maybe improve?) for a decade +.

Comtes Lafon Dinner - Blanc et Rouge (RPM Seafood - Chicago IL): In 02/07/09 vertical. Spiced throughout with red and black cherry, maturing gracefully. Good+ weight, very good length. Lots of nuance unfolding with more air. This was the best wine tonight, even if the 2009 will surpass it in the near future.

Decanted about 45 minutes before serving. Deep ruby color. Light aromas of spring flowers, almost potpurri -- distinctly reminiscent of a perfume my grandmother used to wear. Medium to light bodied with medium to low tannins well balanced by acidity. Flavors of tart cherries and cranberries that lingered on the finish. Certainly enjoyable but was expecting a good deal more complexity. Paired with cassoulet and roasted carrots.

Very earthy nose. Quite bold and structured on the palate with superb intensity and delicious flavors of crunchy and earthy dark cherry fruit and crushed stone minerals. Rather succulent and tangy with good acidity to accompany the rich fruit and a round, smooth texture. The finish is still tannic and beautifully taut with an excellent dark mineral crunch and finely-spiced complexity. A masculine style of Volnay that seems quite youthful so perhaps the elegance will come in time? Blind, I think I would've guessed Gevrey but make no mistake, this is an excellent young Burgundy. 92+

All 9 Gevrey Grand Crus (Straits Clan, Singapore): A real shift in gear from the tight and rather less than generous Taupenot Merme Mazoyeres that preceded it - this still smelt of sweet vanilla oak alongside a touch of earth, and then more lifted notes of violets and blackberries, all infused with a real blast of exotic spice. Really expressive and attractive at first, and then mellowing a little bit with time until it reached a nice equilibrium of fruit, flowers and earthy notes. Very nice. The palate was velvety, polished and powerful, showing tons of depth in its deep dark cherries and berries seasoned with touches of spice. Very solid, very integrated, with a lovely wholeness to its sweet fruit, with balanced acidity and smooth tannins all gliding into a firm, lengthy finish of earthy mineral and spice. A very solid wine. The ringer on the night, but certainly no slouch amongst the numerous Gevrey Grand Cru.

Terrifically young, pure and exuberant Volnay. Loads of red and black cherry, with some toast notes along with florals. Great concentration and richness -- almost too much for a 15+ year old wine. This needs more time to shed it's baby fat and gain nuance ... but it's darn tasty right now.

Drank along side a 2008 Lafarge Volnay Chênes. Couldn't have been more different. This was black fruit tannic with deep minerality and the Lafarge was bright soft red fruit. This never showed the balance between the delicate side that the '99 of this showed (my favorite bottle of Lafon reds). I still liked it more than my compatriot and it showed lovely black cherry and softer texture with some sautéed leeks and escarole, but less so with the duck confit. I think I have to agree with Burgundy Al that this needs more time to soften.

Ripe black cherry aroma with savory spice. Similar flavors, just slightly less expressive, coming across as younger than expected for a 2002. Consistent with another bottle from earlier this year, I will cellar my remaining bottles longer.

This wine is young but has great potential. The young, somewhat ripe nose is somewhat open and enjoyable. I could smell clove, dark red fruit and hints of earth. The palate at first offered ripe, primary fruit and balanced acidity but then after an hour started to close down and become dominated by acidity with the fruit backing off. It went very well with dinner but seems to be years away from its full potential which is not a surprise really!

Top Volnay Producers and Vineyards 1971-2006 (Custom House Tavern - Chicago IL): Single blind with 2002 Volnay 1er. Ripe black cherry with great spice, some obvious oak, then floral hints in deep background. Dense and spicy fruit from start to finish on palate, accompanied by really classic spice. Lots of structure, more than what's apparent because the fruit is still so upfront and concentrated. Really nice tonight, this should evolve into a wine far more elegant and charming than the older vintages of Lafon Santenots-du-Milieu we had tonight (1986, 1990, 1996).

The oak is at the forefront on the nose, emitting whiffs of cedar, cola and ginger. With air there are some enticing ripe berry fruits laced with purple flowers and just a hint of smoked meats. In the mouth it is extremely primary and crammed full of raspberry, cranberry and blood plum fruits that play amiably upon a bed of geological matter. Whilst the texture is lacy it is quite dense and concentrated and finishes with plenty of authority. A wine that needs plenty of more time.
