This was unexpected, opened at abt 5pm for dinner. And it took a little more time in the glass but I would say this is drinking at its best now but with many more years to come. Lots of secondary flavours, tea leaves, Sandlewood but giving so much delicate chambolle pleasure right now as well. It was balanced and showing beautifully and paired nicely with light sausage and meats. The only reason I didn’t score this more highly was the concentration/density could have been better.

Surprisingly youthful, with intense dark cherry, and developing earthy character, but still needs more time , as tannins quite firm and significant. Will get much better with 5-6 more years . A real keeper!!

Tight as nails on first pop, necessitating a decant, which helped reveal a nose of black cherry, roast coffee, and spice. Still fairly tight on the palate with a medium body and inelegant tannins. The 1998 Chambolle-Musigny 1er is pretty but will likely never find elegance. Made from Musigny grapes under 20 years of age. (Bottle 054)

Opened, good cork, decanted and could already smell red fruit nose jumping out of the bottle, quite delightful. Dark crimson with maybe a little browning at the edges in color. On palate, great length & power, fine but persistent tannins with great grip, quite powerful and structurally will definitely hold for many more years. Flavors of dark plums & cherries initially, a little spice, earth and a hint of vanilla. After an hour, starting to get a bit of an after taste at the back of the palette, a little minerally, getting a touch tertiary as well. Structurally built to last many more years, just a question how the fruit evolves. Try again in a few years.

The wine has a soft ruby color, showing its age in the glass at the edges. The legs are slow with moderate sediment in the bottle. It smells like fig, cherry and slight chocolate. The body is light/medium. The cherry fruit is soft and round on the center of the palate and is not fruit forward. The wine finishes medium but with a soft feminine balance. Still several years on the wine.

Burg Dinner with Friends (Formento's - Chicago IL): I haven't had this wine in several years, and it is really showing perfectly right now. Perfectly mature black cherry with great savory spice and good length. Textures and nuance kept evolving in exciting directions. This was open almost two hours before serving, which might have been slightly excessive since it was best when first served, but less interesting when finished.

I almost always get a slight ash note in '98 red Burgs and that is the first smell I encountered here. The wine was tight but it really breathed up in the glass and became deeper and darker. There was a core of liqueur cherry fruit and a strand of liquorice weaving through the flavour profile. It was dense and chunky with plenty of power and muscle. There were some savoury and mineral things going on just below the flesh and a whiff of violets on the nose as we worked into the last third of the bottle. There's plenty of grip on the finish and whilst it is drinking really well I suspect it is still a decade away from its apogee.

Lots of power. A little funky on the nose at first. Making transition to secondary. This wine had a great mix of cherry and baking spice. Wonderful Chambolle character. Tasted side by side with 2000. The 2000 was more giving initially, but this wine was much more structured and built to age. This wine has a long road in front of it. I wouldn't open another bottle for a good 5-10 years.

Decanted for a little over an hour. Side by side with the 2000 Vintage. Much darker fruit profile and more structured than the 00. More black cherry than red with berry notes too. Some mild clove and sweet spice notes. Mineral and earth on the nose and palate as well. Long gripping finish. Lots of power. This could use a few more years to soften up and integrate more.

Pre-holiday afternoon with friends...mostly with Burgundy (Northbrook, IL): Larger scaled than its 2000 vintage counterpart in the next glass. Sightly backward beginning, then lots of red and black cherry aromas and flavors. Long and powerful start-to-finish, this should continue to improve for at least another 5 years, then hold well for another 10-15.

on a fruit day; pop-n-pour; cork in perfect condition; cherries, berries and spices on nose with subtle fruits; lovely balanced juice with a little bit greenness in some stages; over a superb effort in a difficult vintage

2011 Simple Dinner Series 11 :: A night with 98s Chambolle (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck @ Paragon): Alcohol :: 13.5% This vibrant, youthful ruby red juice offer absolutely stunning seductive bouquet that is airy, high tone, focus with super breadth and depth: blueberry, black and red cherry with sense of underlying ripeness that distinct herself from the rest of the wines tonight. All of this sweet tones intermixed perfectly with violet, rose petal with mineral and spice that added better depth. This is real showy, firework! I had some wines from Vogue but never got myself impressed, as their wines are always highly extracted that seems a bit too heavy for such delicate grape. However, this stunning juice had me said that, and I hate to say so, this is my red WOTN after my very 1st sip. Power and grace is what I had in mind. Seamless, impeccable balance, highly complex and pure mouth feel with incredible intensity that just keep expanding gracefully and gorgeously on the palate along with super inner perfume that immediately fill in the mouth and lasted for mins. Long long lingering finish that is sweet and succulent, with mineral, orange and red cherry aftertaste. WOW!

This wine has a fair amount of bottle variation, but none of it is bad. This was richer and darker than other bottles in the past, but it was the WOTN, besting the 2002 Bart Bonnes Mares that came after it. Dark fruits and raspberry dominate this intense grad cru-like wine.

Premier Cru Red Burgundy (Willamette Wine Storage, Portland OR): Apples, raspberries, and cloves show on the nose along with a hint of heat. Some cool plum flavors with gentle tannins and even acidity jump onto the palate right away. The fruit becomes juicy on the mid palate with dark cherries joining the plums. The structure becomes bigger toward the finish, and as it fades, nice fruit still persists. The finish is excellent now, and I think this wine will really shine with some more age to soften out the texture. 90-

1997 and previous Premier Cru Red Burgundy (Willamette Wine Storage): Awesome last minute addition to the night. This was massive on the nose compared to the others; tons of heavily peppered deep red fruits, and really delicious aromas. Definitely larger than expected. Wow, the massive fruit carries onto the palate with tons of grip and sticky red fruits with sweet tannins. Huge again on the finish. Nice balance throughout, and impressive how it holds the fruit with that much structure, but this is entirely too young to consume today. For me, the fruit is actually a bit out of balance and excessive compared to the acid. I'd love to try it again in 15 years.

1er Burgundy with the Wine Thursday group (WWS, Portland OR): This was brought out as a end of night ringer by Toby. Massive nose compared to the old stuff I was tasting before. However, this smells freaking awesome. Rich soil, cherry pie, licorice. Awesome depth in the nose, smells really nice. The palate has a very refined feel, still strong structurally but so soft in it's approach. Balanced yet big. Great length and really delicious. Sorry I didn't give flavor descriptors on the palate, but this was a nice wine to end on for the night.

Super bright nose of bright fresh fruit. Opened and drank. After an hour the fruits are still very bright and fresh and the finish is long. This is young, but drinks very well at this age. The finesse and elegance of grand cru but without the power.

This wasn't too impressive when first poured so we decanted it about an hour. The air seemed to help. The color is a dark, blackish red. The nose is reserved and austere giving predominately black fruit and oak. In the mouth this is a heavier weight than the Calera but more compact on the palate, showing mainly dark fruit and oak, and finishing with a healthy presence of tannin. Really seemed to open up and improve over the course of the night. Based on this tasting I'll be hiding my remaining bottles away for a few more years.

Post Insignia Dinner at Siggy's: I was really looking forward to trying this given how good the 2001 is and was extremely disappointed. The nose showed some red fruit but was dominated by the smell of oak. This was better on the palate with good fruit flavor and good balance. Showed young and simple.

Post-Insignia Burgundy Dinner (Our House): Funky nose. Flavors of cherry Pixie Stix and raspberries. Not much secondary nuance. Straightforward; showing some oak. Not a blockbuster example of this wine, judging from the reviews. I suspect this could have been an off bottle as well.
