Opened and poured - heady, dark purple to black braised char elements, ripe strawberries, blackberries, etc. Potent juice. Still fairly lively and ripe.

Dark garnet, a little muddy on coravin pour. Fruits still prominent, but overcome by somewhat sour/acidic rush. Partly from the alcohol, but more than that. Let's see if this improves on getting some air.

Decanted for an hour before drinking. The wine is drinking beautifully. Big but soft edged mouth coating fruit, smooth tannins with nice acidity and a long delicious finish. Great at 13 years of age.

Opened and poured. Dark, medium bodied. Braised jammy notes, bruised fruit and charry hoisin and smoked plums. Some deep boysenberry and blackberry syrup. Still quite lively, and not too cloying or one dimensional. Very solid. I enjoyed this over the 2007 Smith Hellenthal we recently had.

Dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of Kirsch, black pepper, black berries and black cherries. Flavors of black cherries, black berries and black raspberries. Medium acidity, medium tannin, full bodied. Drink now.

Slightly-bricking purple in color, with lifting aromas of dusty black cherry and rose petal. The palate shows full flavors of blackberry, raspberry cobbler, sandalwood, and tea. Medium-long finish.

Acker Holiday Auction (A Voce Madison): Coming off the heels of some old world and old world-like wines this was a bang in your face wine. Very fruity. Very intense. What I prototypically think of as California Pinot (red fruits, pepper, low acidity).

Acker Auction - November (JK's birthday) (Zuma in NYC): We have a few younger vintages of these so interesting to see what it's like with some more years on it. Very fruity. That classic cherry cola that you hear about. It's pretty low acidity. There is a touch of maybe sassafras or something similar which tempers the fruit some (but also lends the cola comparison). Also fairly light - not a heavy wine. I enjoyed it.

Good solid cork and thanks KB for spending money on them. Garnet in color and wonderfully matured wine. Fruit still licking good but now with integration of other elements only aging can bring. This producer makes age worthy pinot and there was no sign this was close or over the hill. Wonderful mouthfeel, and noted the palate and saturated also. Great vintage.

Nose of black cherry, sweet & smoky BBQ sauce, sage / bay leaf, and a hint of dill / celery seed (like in poultry seasoning). The palate has pungent dark cherry and plum, the typical bay leaf and green herbs of an American PN, and something that reminds me of birch beer maybe? Not much tannin left. The fruit is still decent. There's a tartness that seems to be coming more from the fruit than acidity. Whichever, it's a nice overall package but I'd want a little less green.

PnP. A bit harsh on the open, but with some air it opened up to reveal nice cherry, hints of raspberry, touch of oak and spice. There's life left in this but perhaps not a lot.

Nice garnet color, translucent with good clarity. Smells are chery, red licorice, sassafras, light peppery notes, olive, and hints of Indian spice. The tastes are cherry, red jolly rancher, green olive and spicy notes. The finish is spicy, sweet, and lengthy with soft tannins and a little heat.

Tasting Group Holiday Party (Lee Road): Lou opened this one as a bonus Pinot. I mentioned this was a nice Pinot for those who don't really love Pinot. Purple ruby in color. The nose has black cherries and root beer. Very primary and young. Ripe black cherry fruit and plums. Enough acidity to carry the wine. Very hedonistic wine.

probably drank a little too fast...recommend decanting to expose to air for an hour prior to drinking. the last glass was the best showing more complexity than Sonoma Coast usually shows...seawater, currant, craisens, spice...electric with a long finish and ever changing.

Kosta Sonoma 07 Splash decanted. A bit of a murky ruby red color. Nose started a bit muted, dust, ripe cherry, Forrest floor on the nose. Beautiful soft flavors. Cherry, a hint medicinal, a bit nutty flavors . Nice raisin type liqueur flavors. Strawberry coming from nose about an hour in. Seem really to be in an excellent place right now. Hint of leather flavors. Nice summer flowers nose. A bit short finish, but very nice very floral flavors. Alcohol and acid has integrated very well in this wine. As TDH42 and a few others mentioned this bottle is hitting on all cylinders. I plan to drink my last bottle later this year. Drink them if you got em.

On its last leg. I have had many a great bottles of this, but the last two have been going down hill. Zero tannic structure, lack of acid, fruit is receding. Quite smooth and long, but very savory up front now, losing that pure cherry flavor that I once loved about his wine. A little alcoholic, out of balance, and just past it's prime. This was once a great bottle.

Rapidly giving up hope on these wines. My recent '06 and '07 KBs have not been inspiring, to say the least. This bottle opened with a strong whiff of alcohol, which remained even after a two-hour decant. Underneath the alcohol was a one-dimensional note of stewed cherry. More stewed cherry on the palate, with some blackberry and more alcohol heat. Just a one trick pony. Age is not treating the KB appellation wines well. I fear for my stash of the SVDs . . . .
Aromas of sassperilla, cherry, olive and spice. Drinking really well right now and has some nice age on it at this point. Flavors of dried cherry, root beer, rhubarb with blast of cherry on the finish. Wine was better in its youth but aging gracefully. No heat on this as well. Kosta Browne is probably one of the only wineries that make their appellation blends just as good as their single vineyard designates.

I had a moment of holding my breath when the Somm opened this nearly 7 yr. old Pinot last night, (sometimes you just never know!), and when the cork was perfectly clean and dark at the rim, I had a smile on my face; only to be surpassed by the clarity of the wine in the glass and the beautiful nose of this gorgeously classic KB Pinot, (as usual). Garnet like in color; smooth, cream ripe cherries, with a vibrant and luscious texture; with a light hint of caramel and tobacco at the finish, made this an absolute favorite by all four of us. The balance of flavors and acidity matched perfectly with the lamb chop!! Probably the best "Sonoma Coast" I've had to date..!!

Liquid Farm Tasting (Chris and Brig's House): Dark plum color. Nose shows spice and dark berry. Dark blackberry and dark cherry flavors, fruit driven and a touch sweet. Medium finish with toasted oak note. Easy to see why this is a crowd pleaser but it needs a little acid to balance the fruit.

Stewed and slight roasted cherry on the nose, with a note of baking spice. More stewed cherry on the palate with clove and brown spices. An odd bottle. This wine has been improving for the last four years, culminating with an ethereal bottle four months ago (see note of 5/27/13). This one missed the mark. Ah, wine.

Oh man, this wine keeps getting better, and is now in a great place. Fresh aromas of plum, pomegranite, citrus, pine, and forest floor waft from the glass in waves. On the palate, pure black cherry intermixed with grapefruit, with a spicy attack and mouth-cleansing acidity leading to a long finish. Awesome tonight.

I have no doubt that this is a great Pinot but after having several different years of Kosta Browne I don't think it is my style. This is full bodied and minerally. I don't taste much fruit. It is smooth with a hint of pepper on the mid-palate.

Ruby red in color. 14.5% ABV. The nose is all about red fruits. Strawberries and raspberries in spades. Baking spice, mineral, pine needle, black cherry, cinnamon and cranberry on the palate. The finish is long and sweet. Bright acidity. Voluptuous and sexy while maintaining an earthy minerality. Everything you want in a California Pinot Noir and more. This wine showcases the exceptional '07 vintage. The '07 single vineyard wines from Kosta Browne should be a real treat.

- Slow forming legs. It's in total harmony with a full body. Polished texture with a long finish - This is all you'd ever want in a bottle of wine. Wonderful bouquet, redolent of berries, dried fruit and a touch of chocolate. It keeps morphing and mixing flavors through a very long finish. This an especially balanced wine without and apparent flaws. It is one of those instances where the appellation wine exceeds it's single vineyard counterparts. The 2007 Sonoma Coast is a better wine than the 2007 KB Kanzler and Koplan Pinot Noirs and both of those are quite special. It simply is flat out sublime.

Gave it about an hour of air after the initial taste. An awesome wine that just rocked! The best KB I've had in a while that was reminiscent of the ‘04s. It showed fantastic perfumed fruit (black cherry and raspberry) with some spice leading to a rich concentrated palate with liqueur intensity.

At first I was a skeptic, but this really grew on me. Not necessarily my first choice for wine, especially with food (though it paired well with whatever it was we were eating,) but in the end, we found this to be very well balanced,. relaxing and purely enjoyable. Perfect for watching the sun go down and contemplating life. Not to think about, but just to make your life better.

A delicious wine that has benefited from time in the bottle. A cherry profile with a lovely balance. The acidity is just enough to tickle the tongue. This should be equally great with meat and/or fish depending on the preparation. For me, this would be a crab stuffed white fish pairing as well as any kind of white meat, or red beef. Lovely. Wish I had more. Only have one left.

Drank this while watching the academy awards, and it was a real treat. Very enjoyable aromas of candied red berries and pie spices. Forward red cherry fruit and cola on the palate along with nice undertones of oak-related flavors including cedar and spice. Honestly doesn't seem much different than the first bottle that we opened 4 years ago -- still forward and fruity -- though there seems to be a bit more happening on the midpalate. Nice long finish. Everyone loved it.

Almost three years since my last bottle of this. Two hour decant and consumed with dinner. This is a big, but somehow weightless, wine. The nose is explosive, but the palate is smooth and feminine. Seems like secondary characteristics are getting ready to emerge. Outstanding.

I did something tonight which I rarely seen done with KB is a mini-vertical (well actually the 07 and 10 Sonoma's so vertical is a stretch term). What we discovered was an amazing consistency such that after the 2010 warmed up (it had been pulled later from the cellar) the wines were almost identical. Both exhibited that typical KB note of deep, dark fruit even though Pinot is usually a lighter style. I slightly preferred the 07 but when that bottle was drained the 10 was ready for the stage. For my education it reinforced the concept that good wine-makers can turn out consistent product year after year despite all the variabilities that mother nature can throw at them. Bravo to the team at KB, will buy more.

Another excellent bottle of this wine, which is starting to confirm my belief that 2007 is a banner year for California (North Coast) pinot. Nose on this bottle was a bit muted -- with coaxing and air, revealing wild berry, anise, baking spice and a very slight note of citrus. In the mouth, smooth and voluptuous, with explosive flavors of wild berry and black cherry. Hard candy flavor across the mid palate, with a long, spicy finish, accented by a menthol note. Good stuff.

Can't quite give it a 94. Very good, solid Kosta Brown effort. Pulled from cellar, let warm for an hour, opened and poured, let sit in glasses for 15 minutes. Nose of strawberry flowers, black cherry, and current. On the pallet, black fruit, current and some minor minerality.
Moderate finish, a longer finish would have pushed this to a 94.

Truly exceptional. Enjoyed so much dinner was literally blown off to take this in.
Color has touch of fading red to it. The nose erupts with a berry medley (cranberry, raspberry both ripe and unripe), cocoa, and vibrant and fertile earth. The body almost has a hint of rough acidity but it comes off as vehicle to deliver the cola soaked berries and cherries.
This is a Wow! wine in so many ways.

Continuing to round into form, but still dark and primary. Nose of blackberry and black cherry, with notes of anise, wet rock, pine needle, and a hint of unsweetened chocolate. A spicy attack on the palate, with black cherry cut by limestone and prominent acidity, and some clove on the finish. A big wine that held its own against smoky cedar planked salmon, but not over the top. Very enjoyable.

14.5% alc. Clear deep dark ruby-garnet. Outstanding aromas and flavors of red cherries, caramel, and minerals. Very sweet pinot fruit and thankfully free of any barnyard or cola traits. There was something interesting in the bouquet that reminded me of pickled ginger. My friends did not smell anything of the sort, and scoffed at me. At any rate, no finer domestic pinot noir comes to mind from recent memory. Voted SECOND PLACE tonight.

A very, very nice wine, but not as impressive as some previous vintages of the Sonoma Coast bottling. Nose of cherries, spice, and stone. My son loved the nose and could have spent the evening just smelling it. Nice crisp acidity, lots of dark fruit with some loamy tones. Definitely a very good wine, but not quite up to the '06. Of course, compared to anything but another KB it is killer. Everyone at the restaurant loved it, and the Chef even built a tasting menu around it (and the other two wines we brought) for us. There is a reason that I continue to buy Kosta Browne year after year.

14.5% alcohol. Full cherry color with the faintest signs of initial bricking on the rim of the glass. Pretty nose of cherry pie, baking spice, and a hint of minerals. In the mouth, quite fleshy, with really nicely focused cherry fruit, a solid dose of earth and minerals, and surprisingly crisp acidity that makes it refreshing. Solid finish. Drinking well and possibly at its near-peak. A-

Dark purple. Nose of dark cherry, baking spice. Early in its evolution spice predominant on palate. As it warms and has more air, black cherry, spice tea and some savory notes. For me enough acidity to keep it balanced and hold it all together. Nice mouthfeel and fairly long finish. This is definitely a big fruit forward styled Pinot, but one with a ton of complexity and balance. It works for me!

Second bottle of three. A dense wine but lacking finesse. I'm a big fan of the sonoma coast KBs but this vintage just has not done it for me. Served chilled and consumed over a few hours. As the wine warmed the heat was apparent. More spice and earthy overtones with a tad too much sweetness for my liking. Note: Drank Friday night and may have been tired and thus my senses the same.

From first pour to finish, the wine was consistent with its smokey cherry profile. I couldn't get away from coming up with a burned marshmallow note. There was not the obligatory KB cola (guess it's not completely obligatory). I typically find these wines to be in the 90-91 range but this came up a little short.

Powerful aromas of black cherry, raspberry, chocolate, baking spice, clove, and dusty talcum powder. Palate ofers rich chocolate covered cherries, with notes of cola, wild berry, mineral and chalk. Needed 1-2 hours of air, although it was pretty darn good soon after opening. Nice bright red cherry nose initially which turned to dark cherry, oak and spice with air, leading to a full-bodied mouth. A luscious mouthfeel with a great mid-palate. Man...these wines are fun to drink.

A bit more elegant and refined than a prior bottle. Cherry cola and spice on the nose. The spice becomes more dominant on the palate. Really lovely, silky texture that is slightly creamy but not at all heavy. Pure, focused fruit flavors with decent complexity and good structure and grip. While slightly fruit forward, it is not overdone, candied or cloying. 92-93

Poured thru vinturi. Big cherry nose with spice, oak and some heat. Big ripe, rich cherry & strawberry with a lot of acidity. Slightly candied, pure, focused flavors that are fresh and bright. Medium body with soft edges and a smooth mouthfeel. Adds more body, softens and the fruit turns darker and richer after about 1 hour of airtime. Finish is a bit short. Not surprisingly, this wine is all about the great fruit. A bit of a one-trick pony, but a really good one.

Drinking really well. 15 minute decant. Obviously fruit forward, but I definitely wouldn't call it "big." Red fruit that had a bit of a candied element, but no cola and certainly not syrupy, and even had a good note of acidity. I think this is a nicely balanced wine, although I could definitely see how some people might shy away from the fruit forward profile. I really think 07 marks the first KB vintage that made great strides towards more balanced wines.

The 07 Sonoma Coast is drinking beautifully today. After beng double decanted for a couple of hours this is displaying black cherry, some blackberry, some cola and sassafras notes and the barest hint of anise with earthy undertones. The red fruit seems to be fading into the backround but is still present as a more subtle nuance with white pepper on the 45 second finish. I have yet to be truly disappointed by Kosta Browne wines, and this bottle is no exception.

Not the best showing for this wine ad it showed quite a bit of heat, better when chilled. Popper and poured with violets and black cherry nose. Lush round palate, low acidity and no tannins. Concettated fruit, cola, and plenty of spice that spreads out on the palate. Good for the style, though my palate has shifted away from this style.

14.5% alcohol. Drinking in a marvelous place right now. Black cherry color. Fragrant nose of cherry pie, blackberry jam, baking spice, and a touch of wood. In the mouth, plush and rich, with terrific concentration but no parts of the wine stick out as incorrect or unpleasant. The fruit is ripe, with cherry pie and blackberry notes, baking spice, earth, and a sting of acidity. Long finish shows no heat. Just solidly well made stuff. A-

This was excellent, but did not blow me away like I thought it would. There was no "wow" factor. Was not even the best Pinot I had tonight. The '07 Merry Edwards Klopp Ranch took the prize.

3/20/11-Opened 1st night and had with tostada for supper. Legs initially ran medium, but right in the middle of decent of the first wave, they slowed to a crawl. Cork a deep lavendar stain. Very nice bouquet. Initially impressionw as there is fruit but is lean somehow. but it's been my experience these Kosta wines require a lot more time to open up than you average pop and pour. They make a style of pinot that is different than most in Cali. Very elegant and it takes tiem to pull apart all the flavors. Can't wait to taste this on night two. 3/21/11-Even better. Compare this wine to Dumol, Martinelli, and Sea Smoke.

got about a 3 ounce pour of this. the local mob was swigging it like chocolate milk so i knew it would be gone quickly. gotta love the point chasers. that's all they could talk about regarding this label; nobody actually conversed about the wine. KB = marketing geniuses. i hope dan is on a beach somewhere drinking real wine. i can understand the appeal, even if it isn't in my wheelhouse. ripe (tasty) fruit + punchy oak + alcohol, enough pinot character to placate, although very syrah-like. i think the appellation blends suit me better than the (generally) over extracted SVDs. drink now.

Decanted 1.5 hours, consumed over next 3 hours. Nose: Very expressisive scents of cinnamon, cherry cola, raspberry, vanilla, bacon fat and flowers. Palate: Great balance and mouthfeel, red fruit up front joined by Asian spice through the mid-palate. Finish: Lengthy sense of creamy red fruit. Wow - from nose to finish and outstanding effort.

Wow. Very rich nose of cherry pie filling and allspice. Shockingly complex mouth, very accommodating to the agnolotti with beets and beet greens. Best sonoma coast Pinot with food that I've had. Had with Keith, Nicole and S.

Drank along side 2005 Sea Smoke Botella. I preferred the KB - more elegant with tremendous balance. A big, but not overpowering Pinot. Definitely ready to drink.

seemed reticent too (less so but similar to the RRV) and not delivering the hype - some cherries, cola, pie but lacked the verve, fruit and glycerin typical of KB

Still not my style and still super great. I popped a bottle last night with an impending decision on buy/no buy on the KB mail order. Gotta say that this was the best bottle of pinot in a couple of months for me, though I've not been opening a lot of pinot. More balanced than some earlier bottles of the KB Sonoma Coast, this one was high on the meduim-bodied scale for me. At the same time, I said to my wife that it's as easy-drinking as Coca Cola...in a good way. 14.5% alcohol, and that seemed about right, not a bomber like I usually get from these guys. Luscious fruity nose, with creamy berries. Nice tartness on the palate which I enjoyed. Pretty long finish which was very impressive. All in all, I went and bought more of the 2009s. Oh yea, my wife really loves this wine...
Magnificent. The nose is quite earthy, revealing nothing but wet forest floor and spice. On the mouth, it is the opposite, cherry, cola and clove with just a touch of sweetness. The flavor is long and silky. I paid through the nose to get to all of Kosta Browne's 2007 releases, and only the Russian Riverappelation release has been close to just good. Everything else verges on classic.

I am sure it is because they listened to my criticisms(!), but the 07 seems to be toned down a bit, making it much more drinkable. Very clean, beautiful coloring, sort if a standard KB nose. The mouthfeel is medium, which is light for KB standards, actually being a but graceful on palate. Good cherry flavor, some brown sugar and spice. A bit of heat on the finish. Decent effort, wish they would head more in this direction.

Sweet with big time cola. Really fat with very little definition - sloppy. Maybe it needs some time??? Had some left for day two and it was better - not as sloppy. Then opened a 2004 Dehlinger Estate and the Dehl blew the KB away. These cost too much for what they are.

Expressive nose. Rich medium ruby color. Pinot Noir is the easiest varietal for me to identify and the hardest to describe. The nose here is a rich and complex blend of the smells of fruit and spice mixed in with pine needles and clove. The clove, berry and baking spice combined with the crisp acidity and hint of sweetness deliver the full mouthfeel that defines PN. Hints of cola and Dr. Pepper are also baked into this very enjoyable wine. Not long but a rapidly evolving in the mouth wine. A good example of what California PN is.

A nice Pinot, but didn't quite live up to what I expected. Wild berries, cherries, pomegranate, cola and a touch of spice. Smooth and pretty juicy. The nose seemed a bit closed down. I've got a few more, and I'm curious as to how much this will evolve with time. I didn't really see a whole lot of promise for future evolvement, but we'll see...

This was my first Kosta Browne experience where the wine manifested subtler, old world elegance in the nose and palate. Textbook pinot aromas of cherry and spice, with a liqueur-like depth developing on the nose over time. Flavors were more earthy and brooding in this bottle compared to previously-consumed KBs, which seemed brighter and shouted out for attention. It was almost reminscent of a Gevrey - showing power, depth, and length in flavors of dusty clove and dark berries on an integrated palate. It might be shutting down (do KBs do this, or am I taking the Burgundy analogy too far?), and it may be advisable to hold for a few years - and, I suppose that at the end of the day, I might prefer a Gevrey anyway.

Expressive nose of currants and back cherry, just a hint of heat on the palate. Concentrated and dense palate, round, but not too heavy as there is a fine acidity to hold things together. Lovely ripe red fruits with currants in the background and forest floor in the background. Hold the palate for a lengthy finish of cola, hints of spice, and earth. A little more monolithic and fruit forward than I expected, though much better balanced better made than the '06. Quite good, maybe I'll hold the next bottle for 2-3yrs.

Bright and jammy, with cherry pie and baking spice jumping out of the glass. Voluptuous yet lively on the palate, with slightly jammy cherry fruit, blackberry notes, earth, and baking spice. Strong acidity. Long finish showing a touch of oak. This is really starting to drink perfectly.

i really wanted to like this, i opened the 2007 Amber Ridge pinot about 2 weeks before this and that was lovely, this however was a mess. nose was ok, had some good pure strawberry notes, some cranberry, rhubarb, cola. the palate however was a hot disjointed mess. alcohol was off the charts, like drinking bourbon, from entry to finish the alcohol and oak just dominated the taste leaving no chance for the fruit to come out. i saved some for the next day, improved very little but was still way too hot and unbalanced. what a shame as i was really looking forward to this especially after having such a wonderful experience with teh Amber Ridge just a few weeks before.

Decanted for one hour before service. In the glass, clear, deep red. On the nose, crushed cherries and a bit of wet stone. On the palate, pure RRV fruit, silky, smooth, and no sign of the alcohol, but as other tasters have noted, not much of the spice or complexity that typically comes with pinot. Still, the purity and texture of the fruit makes this one nice to drink.

Nearly a year since I tasted this wine and I do recall how much I liked the wine a year ago.....opened, splash decanted then put put back to bottle and into the fridge to give it some chill. Sexy fruit, with what seemed to be a light stem aromatic on the nose. Don't recall if this wine saw any WC or not. Some slate, dark red fruit, with strawberry, fruit bowl and some raspberry, along with some of that earthy component. Was enjoyed as part of a larger group of wines so I didn't spend the time with it I would have liked but given the notes I mentioned above, as well as enjoying the wine last night, I would still offer and say that this wine remains in a good place and delivered quite well.

Nice but not great Pinot. Subtle and muted aroma. On the palate some dark cherry, cola, and a bit of spice. Silky mouthfeel and a relatively long finish. However, IMHO it lacks the character and complexity necessary to be a great wine. It doesn't really keep your interest the way a great Pinot does.

Notes consistent with 11/2/2009. This bottle, a bit older, was ready to drink upon opening and showed deeper dark red fruit, more black pepper and spice. It has a bigger presence than most pinot noirs.

Time to check in on these. Intense nose of rasberries, cola, cinnamon. The palate is medium bodied (much softer than 05 or even 06) Ripe dark berries, a little chocoloate some cola, and no noticeable heat. Nice acidity. Nice lenght. Not the monster Im used to but great wine.

A very delicious pinot, but not anywhere near extraordinary (not sure where WS gets their ratings sometimes). If this truly was a 95...then I've had LOTS of extraordinary wines. Lovely dark ruby in color, Smooth palate, beautiful cherry and baking spice notes on the palate (and nose), 15-20 second finish. Drink now-2015. Good QPR and still highly recommended.
Nose was a little muted to start but opened up. Lots of black cherry and rasberry and some all spice and perhaps cardamon. Not the longest finish. Very juicy and delicious.

Smoky black cherries on the nose and palate, with red vine tinged cranberry fruit in the finish. A bit of astringency clears the palate. Delicious now, or hold for more complexity. No signs of heat. Like a good Richebourg, only cheaper, but will not age into a complex monster.

This has improved over the last 6 months. The nose is more generous, with red fruit and evergreen, and the wine has fleshed out a bit. In addition to cherry and raspberry the wine has picked up a fairly strong streak of violets on the midpalate. Very enjoyable.

A purple red hue in the glass, this youngster reveals gobs of fruit on both the nose and palate. Still somewhat primary and closed, there was dark plum, asian five spice, heat, cola and toasted oak on the nose. In the mouth the lively young fruit attacks early, with reds and blacks. Fairly smooth tannins with a moderate finish. I think this needs more time still to shed a little babyfat....not comparable to the benchmark '04 SC in my book with regard to complexity and structure, but hopefully with a bit more cellar time it will come around and provide the exhilirating combination of power, finesse, structure and fruit that KB masterpieces are known for.

Six hour decant. Beautiful nose of spicey cherries and pine needles. Smooth and refined on the palate, with bright fruit, nice acidity and a long finish. Lengthy decant really helped, as this was initially very tight. Not sure if I've ever had a better Pinot.
Opened the 07 Kosta Browne Sonoma Coast side-by-side with the 07 Sea Smoke Southing. These were similar, almost equivalent wines. Both displayed cola, sassafras and earthy undertones with some white pepper on the finish, but today the Kosta Browne showed abit better. The fruit was abit richer with abit more depth. The Sea Smoke needed more time in the decanter and didn't really begin to shine until it was aerated for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours, the Kosta Browne opened sooner. In the end, both were really good bottles of wine with the KB just alittle better today.

Consumed too young, but I was curious. Seemed toned down from some earlier KBs and some initial heat when just opened, but faded with some time - about 45 minutes. Also, the finish was a little abrupt upon opening, but lengthened significantly with time in the glass. Hold off for at least a year - probably longer.

Pretty nose of rose petals, strawberries and earth. This wine is like a pillow -- no edges whatsoever. Elegant, in control all the way. Takes a few hours of air to fully come out. Beautiful notes of tea, strawberry and cola. A little hollow in the midpalate. Very good though expectations always run so high (too high?) w/ KB.

Amazing wine. Should have decanted it. What little was left after our Valentines dinner was even better the second night. The wine has a smooth earthy tone and a very long soft finish. This wine is still young. We liked the notes of Rasberry and felt it was better than the 06 that we had previously tried.

Have to decide whether or not to buy KB from the most recent offering so I popped this and drank over two nights. Good fruit with raspberry and cherry. Definitely a big Pinot, as you'd expect from KB - this is not the style I normally prefer but it is fun to drink. Better than the '06 version, but maybe not everything I wanted it to be. Don't see much upside with this one (like I see when I drink an '07 Anthill, Kutch, Rhys, etc.). I'm on the fence about buying the '08s...

Popped and poured. Deep garnet color. Nose of cherry cola, red raspberry, strawberry, asian spice, black raspberry, orange tea, vanilla. On the palate, black cherry, cherry cola, brown sugar, asian spice, vanilla, black raspberry. Finishes with crisp acidity. A little awkward on the transition, should improve with age. Much better than the 06. Outstanding, hold 2-3 years. OK value.

2007 has been an excellent year for the Kosta Brownes. The nose on the 2007 Sonoma Coast reveals a ripe and spicy pinot, but without the strong cola notes often found in Kosta Browne. The cola note is there, but it's much less pronounced than usual. The taste is consistent with the nose: ripeness and spice, like a good burgundy made in a ripe new world style. The fruits are ripe reds, primarily rasberry, and there's some bright-cherry/pomegranate notes. It carries a fairly long finish of red fruits and spice.

I pop a Pinot because it is Friday, which I tend to do, especially with grilled salmon. Wow, this wine was very balanced and I think better than the 2006. The color is a dark magenta but as is typical with Pinot, you could see your fingers thru the glass. Nice ripe nose of rasberries and this was drinking very nicely after a pour thru the venturi. I have been drinking a few Rhone wines lately and this reminds me of a Grenache with that fresh berry fruit that hits the front of your palate. Some of the past KB vintages had a hot element when young and needed a few years in the cellar but this one is very smooth and approachableat this point. I was going to skip the 2008 KB wines on allocation but tasting this tonight made me change my mind as I really do enjoy their wines.

This wine was opened and poured. It showed well in a fuller bodied, jammy style. The aromatics show black cherry, spice, vanilla and floral notes. The color is a dark ruby to almost purple without being opaque. The medium/full bodied palate shows lush fruit and a medium to long finish. This bottle gives a similar impression to a bottle tasted on release.

Nose is bright red fruit with spice and oak notes; palate was complex, black cherry, spicebox, vanilla, and a hint of effervescense. Not as jammy as KB SVD's (like Kanzler for example), but fairly fruit forward and with a long finish, that got longer over several hours. Medium red color. Texture was creamy, some weight on the tongue but a great clarity and focus of flavors. Balance is good now but should improve over 3-5 years to better integrate the acidity and alcohol in with the taste profile and tannins. Not sure I would have made this #4 on the WS Top 100 list, but it is a superb artisan wine nonetheless.

For the 2007 Kosta Browne Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir, the nose is dark cherry, raspberry, menthol and some heat, transforming into dark cherry, spice and vanilla in the mouth. It's light in color, lighter than I expected, with good acidity and tannins. This is a very well balanced Pinot Noir, with a long, lingering finish. As I suspected, given that it is a newly released 2007, it's still a little young and I think I'll wait a few years to try the next one. The bad news is that I have to wait...the good news is that I know it will be worth the wait.

Very very good, so much better than the 06s. I think right now the RRV is drinking better but with some age, this will probably outshine the RRV. It's a little tight right now even with an hour of air, but it is very complex, very balanced. Not quite as fruit forward as the RRV, but may have slightly longer finish. Very enjoyable on my birthday.

Really terrific wine, but needs 20-30 minutes to open enough. I had this with a rich dish of 40 garlic clove chicken. At first, it is a bit intense, closed, very structured. The fruit is rich, dark cherries with raspberries highlights and very tight. With a little air, it became much better rounded and fuller with a beautiful balance. The mouthfeel was of a much bigger wine. Several guests had their choice of this or 2 other very nice wines; this bottle was emptied right away.

I had a week from hell and decided to break out one of the "treasured" few that I was able to bum off of my brother Ken as I have not made the list yet. Some would think this needed more time, but all it needs is some air. Took to a restaurant and popped and poured. The first pour was tight and if that is how the wine stayed, it would have been a mediocre 85. However, we had patience and within 20 minutes it started to sing and by the time the main courses came, it was like a chorus! Jammy fruit, cola notes leading to a beautiful finish.

Young and tight. Nose requires some coaxing, but finally reveals high-toned red fruit with a hint of spice. Palate offers raspberry and cranberry (a KB first, in my experience). Oak and tannins are prominent. Seems a bit disjointed and out of balance. A good wine but, at this point, I don't understand the glowing reviews.

Nice cherry cola aromas. Good sweet California cherry pinot flavors in medim body style, Good drinker, on simpler side. Fun soft slightly candied fruit i good way. A bit lighter than I would have expected. Not very complex or deep, but quite enjoyable with a subtle spice edge that I like. Hard to see this developing further, but likely holds another five years. Had it a few days ago, and didn't take notes. From memory, it was beautifully balanced and not extracted. I recall cherries, cola and spices on an extradinary nose and taste. Had it with the president of our Alliance Francaise and the best sommelier in South Florida, both of whom are French and way biased to French wines. Both were wowed, as was I and our wives.

A night of Pinot Noir (Boston): The nose was loaded with berry fruit and a touch of wood. On the palate the wine had an amazingly velvety mouth feel. The plush berry fruit coats ones mouth as the raspberry, cherry and strawberry flavors mingle in excellent balance. The finish is loaded with raspberry-vanilla creme, showing nice acidity to help carry it across the palate. There are no hard edges here despite the wine's youth. While there were indications of secondary flavors such as star anise, sassafrass and oak, this is all about rich fruit right now. This blows away the RRV bottle tasted a few days ago (right now...).

Wow, wow, wow. I can’t recall a time when a wine moved me like this one did. It almost knocked me off my feet. Sour cherries greeted the palate, revealing a layer of complexity that included a menagerie of fruits and an almost mineral taste, only to leave a cassis-like / creamy taste lingering forever. Beautiful ruby red color. The nose shows oaky-woody spice notes as well as red red raspberry flavors. The mouth feel is in a sense lush which adds to the complexity because I found the fruit notes crisp and bright. OC KB and Shane Dinner--With Michael Browne and Shane Finley (The Murray Casa): A blend of Kanzler, Terra di Promissio, Gaps' Crown and Dutton Manzana. Wow, is this wine in a great trajectory. I say it this way because while the wine shows layers complexity and nuance now, it also shows the structure and reflects the road ahead of it. And looking back at the last few vintages, I am now at the place where I prefer the SC bottling versus the RRV, and the SC at this stage and what I think should endure, will outclass the RRV for the 07 vintage. Woodsy/cedary nose with a hint of leaves. This wine is a palate filler, broad and expansive but not syrupy or weighty. Shows a juicy core with dark cherry, dark berry and cinnamon, with a stony finish. Delicious and probably next to the 2007 Koplen, my WOTN and I'll state for the record that this is the best SC that MB has made.

4 hour decant Like many of my favorite pinots, this has a warmth, kinda a fall leaves scent. Also ripe raspberries still on the vine. This wine dances on the palate. Beautiful lush mouthfeel. Starts lighter and gains weight through the finish. My first KB, this is less over-the-top fruity than I expected (to my pleasant surprise!). Bright red fruit, cherries, raspberries and a bit of earth, possibly a hint of sweet tobacco (cigar tobacco). Some sweet tannins and a long lingering finish complete this wine. Perhaps i am under-rating this at 93pts. 93+

Young but solid pinot noir. Will get better with age. With that said, I decanted for five hours. Crushed cherries with a slight tobacco taste. Medium ruby red color. Smell is not as vibrant as other KBs but should "come alive" with age.

Really great wine. Full bodied and almost excessive for a pinot. Complex notes, deep fruit and spice. Long, long finish. Will hold up for a long time. Might be just a bit hot -- some sense that it was out of balance just a bit, but I think it came together by the end of the bottle. Good idea to leave open in the bottle for 30-45 minutes before serving.

This was fabulous. The robe was deep crimson. The nose was all wood spice, kind of like a gentleman's cologne. The fruit leaned to the reds, red currants, raspberries, and maybe a bit of plum-red plum. But the palate is where this wine really shined. It was lush, and full without being heavy at all. It seemed to float, every swallow motivated another taste. drinking this was like consuming a satin covered down pillow. Really. The only drawback was that I don't see it holding out for many years and taking on tertiary levels of complexity, but I think that might ruin what's so beautiful about this wine anyway. Also, I'm hard pressed to rate it because I don't have much experience with a wine quite like this. I've consumed many pinots, just not many like this. Maybe too, there could have been more complexity and length, but that's really being critical to the point of being a bore.

The nose on this is intoxicating but the wine is just too young to rate. The profile is all over the place and tight with a little heat on the back end. I'm laying this down for another twelve months before revisiting.

Rich, high-toned nose. Some notes of brown sugar. The palate is more expressive. Fruit slightly to the dark side of the spectrum. Impressive minerally finish. Relatively soft tannins. Nice acidity. Delicious.

Served w/ Carolina barbecue; tasted alongside the '07 KB RRV.
Pop and pour: rich and creamy. Very accessible at this early stage. Sweet and fruity, while still maintaining some complexity and rich pinot characteristics. If you want to try one of the '07 KB appellation wines--this is definitely what I would open first.
Second night: still very nice and open; but with air I feel this wine becomes overshadowed by the RRV's complexity.

Triggs over for dinner. Opened 4 X 2007 Pinots: August West Graham, Sojourn Gap's Crown, Breggo Savoy, Kosta Browne Sonoma Coast. All decanted and breathed for a few hours.
A close second-place finish behind the Breggo Savoy and within a group that was excellent overall. Lots of sweet spice aromatics, and in the mouth it has that tell-tale KB creaminess and mouth coating quality. Nice combo of red and blue fruit along with lots of cola and sassafras flavors.

Strikingly different from the RRV. More open nose, with blackberry and earth added to the aromatic mix. In the mouth, a little more plush than the RRV but very pure and tasty, with black cherry, blackberry, earth, spice, and minerals. Good acidity. Beautifully long finish. No heat. A bit of tannin. Another wine that will benefit from age. A-

This wine was opened and poured. This wine showed about as expected. The aromatics show good complexity in a forward and accessible style. The bouquet exhibits black cherry, spice and floral notes. It demonstrates a nice combination of richness and finesse. The color is saturated dark ruby to almost purple. It is youthful and vibrant. The medium / full bodied palate shows excellent balance and the tannins provide structure to the rich core of fruit. This drinks well now for it youthful vibrancy and additional bottle age will provide more complexity and nuance.

Barrel tasting from the Terra de Promisso vineyard, a component that will become part of the final blend of the SC PN. Soft, approachable with dark earth tastes and a sweet profile.
Barrel tasting from the Gap's Crown vineyard, a component that will become part of the final blend of the SC PN. Sweet dark fruit with tight, bright cherry tones.
Barrel tasting from the Gap's Crown vineyard (whole cluster), a component that will become part of the final blend of the SC PN. A beautiful, sweet, floral nose with very tannic fruit.

Dark garnet, a little muddy on coravin pour. Fruits still prominent, but overcome by somewhat sour/acidic rush. Partly from the alcohol, but more than that. Let's see if this improves on getting some air.

Splash decanted. I fear for my stash of the SVDs . . . .

A nose of cherries and spice, medium amber in color. A medium to full bodied Pinot, with currants, cherries, good acidity, dust and spice on finish, just a great wine, long finish. Still can use a decant, has some years left.

Good stuff.

At any rate, no finer domestic pinot noir comes to mind from recent memory. Voted SECOND PLACE tonight.

There is a reason that I continue to buy Kosta Browne year after year.

got about a 3 ounce pour of this. the local mob was swigging it like chocolate milk so i knew it would be gone quickly. gotta love the point chasers. that's all they could talk about regarding this label; nobody actually conversed about the wine.

The Sea Smoke needed more time in the decanter and didn't really begin to shine until it was aerated for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours, the Kosta Browne opened sooner. In the end, both were really good bottles of wine with the KB just alittle better today.

Very enjoyable on my birthday.

this baby was hitting on all cylinders last night and was the perfect pairing for chicken brushed w/dijon topped with butter, soy and sauted mushrooms and green onions. The earthy flavors of the food were a dream match w/the forest floor, mushrooms, tart strawberries, perfect pepper, baking spices, cedar and balanced acids of the wine. Elegant and just beautiful full wine. A friend was talking about not picking this up next year.......yeah........I will get more for sure!!

One word -- unctuous. Beautiful ruby color with inviting nose of dark fruit like black berry and loganberry along with hints of cola. It was really the palate that made this special. Full bodied, concentrated wtih tremendous complexity throughout a long finish. Laube mentioned purity and he is right. There is a laser beam of purity and focus in this wine.

Cherry and sage on the nose. I find the alcohol to overpower the nose a bit, however. A little disjointed immediately upon opening. But the tannins and acidity are there.

Fun from this 375ml format.

Cherry and a hint of crushed raspberries with a crushed-rock character. Fairly acidic. Got better and better with time in the glass. Still, not the orgasmic experience I had hoped for.

Loads of cherry in the mouth with a meaty character. Shows that it is young and a bit disjointed. Needs at least three years in the cellar to show its true potential. Very dark cherries, mushroom and cola notes.

Absolutely stunning.

Beautiful ruby red color. The nose shows oaky-woody spice notes as well as red red raspberry flavors. The mouth feel is in a sense lush which adds to the complexity because I found the fruit notes crisp and bright. Red, cherry, raspberry and spice hang on through the long finish that adds a hint of mineralitiy. Complete review at my blog http://encompasswine.wordpress.com/

4 hour decant
Like many of my favorite pinots, this has a warmth, kinda a fall leaves scent.

Classic Kosata Browne. Much improved over last years and ready to drink now but will improve with a little bottle time. A little heat that blew off over an hour and loads of cherry cola and spice and nice acid. Mild tannins and moderately long finish. A very solid effort from a consistently solid team.
