  • No flaws or tell-tale signs of poor storage, but this was just way too old. Drink up ASAP. One of five purchased so will be interesting to see any variation.

  • Smakte litt ripsaktig, geriatrisk ved åpning. Men kom til live etter luftig. Klassisk bordeaux.Topp til mat.

  • Medium-deep, reddish garnet in color with slight amber tint & clearing at the edges. Full, forward & fragrant nose of mature, ripe fruit aromas of cherries, blueberries, & cassis with overtones of classic cigar box notes of cedar & tobacco, floral notes of violets, earthy/dusty/loam, leather, herbs, spices, minerals & some smoky notes in the background. Medium-full bodied with a good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, mature, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, blueberries & cranberries with earthy/dusty, herbs, minerals & a hint of oak. Lingering dry finish. Drinks quite well at present but at 48 years of age it appears to be at its peak of development, so best to drink up soon. Ullage was at lower neck; cork was stained 1/2 way & crumbled upon opening.

  • Double decanted for sediment than drunk over several hours.

On the nose, it's classic and fully mature with cigar box, leather, cassis, and violet. The nose is lovely. Mid weighted, firm with more of the same notes on the palate. It's tertiary and savory more than fruit driven, with a classic restrained feel, that on the back end unfortunately turns astringent, and even for this lover of generally austere wines, it clamps on the back end. This has the firmness and tannic bite of many 75's. I've probably drunk most of a case of this wine over the last 20 years and I really thought this was one '75 that would turn the corner and soften. At this point, I've given up that hope believe the tannins will outlive the fruit. I love wines with classical lines, but the back end it is still a bit too much for me. The nose and even the front end of the palate were outstanding, but the finish stole some of the joy. Very good still, and while I suspect this will hold for a long time, it's not going in the right direction.

PSA Hedonists run away as fast as possible.

  • This particular bottle was well over the hill, so unable to rate. Drinkable, just barely, but not enjoyable

  • This was one of those odd Gruaud Larose bottle that looks like it came off a pirate ship, with a fill into the bottom of the extended neck. This has that trademark '75 build, with tannins that are still going pretty strong, and relatively less fruit that a wine with this amount of structure should have. Still, there are very pretty red fruits on the nose, with some savory herbal, shoe leather and cigar box notes. One of the more pleasant '75s I've tried.

  • Medium red with brown edges. Lovely herbal nose with lots of Bordeaux’s greatest hits, cedar box, antique furniture and some dark chocolate and coffee bean. Dry balanced plum and dried cherry flavours and a nice dry slightly tannic finish.

Over 2 hours and it kept going strong.

  • Level: Upper shoulder

Still a reasonably good colour, but a bit spirity on the nose. Very tannic and a bit dried out. My least favourite wine of the tasting.

    Tasted at the Winos’ Gruaud-Larose dinner, vintages 2002, 2000, 1999, 1996, 1990, 1986, 1982, 1975, 1973, 1967, 1961 (see reviews for the other vintages)

  • (Mostly) Bordeaux 1975: Beautiful, quintessential Bordeaux Cabernet nose with leather, cedar, tobacco, barnyard, very nice intensity as well; gets more feminime and floral with air. Unfortunately the palate here is not on the same level (anymore), the fruit in this bottle was mostly gone, which leaves high acidity and quite harsh tannins. Quite sure this was an incredible wine 10 years ago though. I usually like this chateau. 15.5/20

  • Wow. No brown or orange rim to the wine in the glass. No decanting needed. A muscular nose of leather and smoked meat combined with roses and red fruit. The level of the bottle was into the shoulder and it has aged SO well. The combination of the forest floor with decomposed oak and the violet and creamy elements in the mouth paired remarkably with Ossau-Iraty cheese. I could not believe this was over 45 years old. This is why I love mature Bordeaux.

  • Impressive! Deep red color, no trace of oxidation. Formidable on the palate. Tannic, elegant. Not very persistent, but after 45 years... Really impressive!

Unfortunately it was the last bottle in my cellar. Robert Parker in 1996 advised to wait until 2025..... I couldn't wait any longer.

  • What a beautiful mature Bordeaux. This St Julien has survived magnificently. I managed to pick up two cases of this wine whilst the world was locking down and a few auction houses were still delivering. This wine shows how well 1975 Bordeaux can last. Blackberry evolves swiftly to prune with a touch of redcurrant but the earthiness of this wine is a joy to experience. Little or no decanting is required.

  • Recorked at the Chateau in 1992. Good fill level.

Had read some other notes, prepared for a wine on the way down.

However, was staggered by clarity of fruit on the nose immediately, powerful raspberry and red fruit as if you'd just spent all day picking it...backed up on the palette which broadened to a strawberry jam chewiness.

Quite light in colour, ruby centre with bricking at the rim. Medium legs. Decanted and light sediment in bottle.

On the nose; amazing fruit, raspberry, red currant, strawberry jam, forest floor, mushroom and lead pencil.

First tasting had raspberry, strawberry and lead pencil. The body is light/medium. Slightly leathery texture.

The finish is slightly short and dry and this probably is on the way down now.

I am sure there is massive bottle variation now and I just got lucky but if you can find a bottle that's been stored well this is still a special wine.

  • similar to my last note in 2017 - brick red with orange rim - very pretty nose of old cabernet cassis fruit, leather, and very light tobacco/cigar - light fruit in the mouth but as with the other 75s became much fuller with food - tannins mostly resolved, but still very much present in a softer form - short 10-15 sec finish - a very enjoyable mature Bordeaux - undoubtedly had more fruit in earlier years, but complex aromas and flavors have replaced that as the tannins dropped out - I'm glad I kept the wine this long to enjoy its full mature development

  • A very good showing, with all the right pieces in place: fruit, tannins and enough acidity to add some lift. Notes of cedar, tobacco, graphite and smoke, a touch funky.

  • Bottle with good fill, cork completely soaked. Good medium garnet color, somewhat dull but might have been some sediment as I Pnp the horizontally stored bottle. Very musty with plenty of sous bois, some dried dark fruit. Drinkable but not really enjoyable. Am sure there are better bottles but likely not among the best 75 Bdx. This bottle around 85 points.

  • Faint pomegranate and rhubarb along with dried cherries and baking spice, and minimal traces of pencil lead. Reddish / orange color with muted herbal scent in the glass. The tannin is hanging on, so it's still alive but definitely fading away quickly.

Impressive fill level (high neck) and a very solid cork; totally intact and quite long. I'm sure it contributed greatly to the longevity of this wine.

  • Purchased last summer via auction. Base neck fill, corroded capsule. Rob's note below matches my experience with this particular bottle better than Salil's note below that. Glad I took a flyer on one, glad I didn't buy more. Always fun to try older G-Ls.

  • Ruby Color. Faint Nose. While enjoyable, this has peaked and feels a bit tired. Still soft tannins, light Oak and good fruit. Bottle was properly stored, goof fill and cork in good shape, - and as others have noted, used a Durand. Drink up.

  • What a great showing. This was in fantastic condition, with the fruit surprisingly deep and vibrant, and the tannin pretty much resolved and nicely integrated into the wine (not a sentence I would have thought about writing for many '75 Bdx). The aromatics are stunning with earth, cedar, tobacco, graphite, and a gentle whiff of Cordier funk that adds complexity without distracting from the other flavours. Beautiful wine, and a pleasure to follow over an evening.

  • cleared the remnants of the bottle with family after a Chinese reunion dinner; decanted to separate out the sediments; medium garnet with brownish edges; pronounced nose yet comparatively milder on palate; plum, cherry, hawthorne, grassy, earthy, mushroom, Chinese herbs, meaty; at it's end, but still enjoyable; happy to clear the bottle at this point

  • medium garnet, with a lot of fine sediments as this bottle did not seem stored in best conditions - cork soaked through and significantly deteriorated, which I carefully removed with the help of a Durand, and recorked the bottle with a younger cork; tannins well resolved, pronounced nose and pretty intense; plum, mulberry, wolfberry, hawthorne, mint, Chinese herbs, leathery, smoked duck, finished a bit short; pleasantly surprised that the wine managed to hold well despite age and less than ideal storage conditions; a very good wine that needs to be consumed quickly - not too long of a life left

  • Had bottle under temp control since release. Cork came out whole, wine color lighter but only brown on the edges. Amazingly good for age, tannins there but not overpowering to the light to medium fruit. Really nice old Bordeaux with some complexity and classic flavors showing well with food.

  • Had this bottle since 1979. Ullage was bottom neck. Cork came out clean with a Durand and was dirty but not soaked. 1975 was an extremely tanic wine but was widely claimd to be the best vintage of the decade for the first few years, but the tannins were so fierce that the fruit generally disappeared before the tannins smoothed out. Decanted and then tasted over the next 30 minutes. Like the song goes, still tannic after all these years. no longer fierce, but still a bit of bite. Classic Gruaud/Cordier flavor profile. Earthy, smooth saddle leather, a bit of forest floor and mushrooms, and just a tad of fruit. Some dark cherry in the background. Considering age, and seven year of mediocre storage at the beginning, this was in great shape. Delicate. No negative characteristics except that age has lightened up the flavor quite a bit.

  • Second Sunday Group: 1975 Bordeaux (Augie's): Aromas of dark fruit and earth/forest floor, with hints of dried mint and spice box. Has more tannin remaining than the others in the lineup so far, with a chalky feel, though there's plenty of dark fruit underneath. Long finish. Excellent.

  • From 375
huge amount of bottle stink, fairly light garnet colored. Still with dense leathery tannins and no real fruit to speak of, but showing no sign of decline and actually probably in need of more time in this incredibly backward vintage.

  • Wine tasting at Paul B's place (Cambridge, UK): Tasted double blind. Oh wow, what a nose! Fantastic barnyard and cassis, I could sniff this all night long! The palate however was losing it, still had good tannins, but the fruit is fading. Still a treat and wonderful to smell and taste!

  • Château Gruaud-Larose 1928 - 2011: Herbal/greenish, dry wood, surprisingly a hint of plums in the finish, tannic - but not overwhelming, fresh, but a bit lean.

  • Drank at a GL tasting in Oslo 29/1-15, 27 vintages of GL.

Good bottle, fill in neck. Ruby red color, classic GL nose, fruit is quite flat, moderate tannins and nice acidity. Lacks vigor and is quite one dimensional, confirms the difficulties of the seventies.

  • 1 cm IN fill. Korken kom ut i to deler.

  • Auction purchase. Bottle into the neck. Some light browning at the edges. Nice soft fruit flavors and medium complexity. Compared with 1970, which I had several weeks ago, this bottle was more muted and seemed on the downslope.

After several hours, a strong cork taint appeared. Not too surprised as the cork was loose and fully saturated.

  • 1 cm IN fill, korken kom ut hel. Nydelig aroma av lær, sigar, fiken mm. Smaken følger aroma, men aromaen er bedre enn smaken. Betydelig mer ungdommelig enn mine forrige flasker. Er mer balanse mellom tannin og frukt, selv om dette er en streng vin, Bordeaux for Barolofolket. Bra lengde!

  • Gruaud Larose Dinner (Inovasi - Lake Bluff IL): One of the other tables kindly shared the last of their 1975 since ours was sadly corked. This had lots of structure, both acid and tannins, that dominated and gave a slightly disjointed character, but quite drinkable and lively.

  • Medium garnet. The nose reveals very sweet bouquet of sweet cigar box, leather, dried fig paste, black currant jam and dried tea leaves. Light bodied, light and delicate. The wine is trying to hold but nothing it can do as it is already tired. Autumn leave, mineral infused medium length finished.

  • From a "3 Pints" rather than a 1500ml bottle. Cork was soaked but solid. Fill was 3.75cm below cork base. I know whom I bought this wine from and won't be buying again. Brownest colored wine I've ever seen. Pure vinegar. It could have gone directly onto a salad. Clearly poor storage was an issue here as '75s are generally very ageworthy and this "Mag" should have been in dramatically better condition than this.

  • EWG Dinner at Noir (Noir Food + Wine): Beautiful nose of dried flowers, tart cherry, old leather and dried leaves; very silky mouth with subtle fine tannins and just a hint of metalic minerality; this is beyond its peak but not to say it wasn't beautiful and quite elegant. Went incredibly well with the duck slices. With food 91.

  • Rustic in style and still tannic, the wine feels hard on the palate. With it's old school style and tobacco, earth, herb and cassis aromas, it might be fun for lovers of this style to drink. But I found little pleasure in drinking it.

  • Group de Degustation Diner, L'Anniversaire de Daniel, '1970s in France & Elsewhere' (Hong Kong Wine Vaults, Aberdeen, Hong Kong): Drank double-blind. Lots of sediment evident immediately in the glass almost suggesting separation. Cloudy and so was semi-opaque (but probably should be transparent) blood red and a pronounced watery meniscus. Nose is lightly bretty in an enjoyable way, spices, red turkish delight from a sandalwood box and some fresh sawn box-wood as well. Palate is a disappointment......sharp, acidic, tannic very hollow indeed in the middle and with a very short, sharp resonance on the finish. Very metallic on the finish. This had me thinking of Burgundy or a poorly-kept bottle of 20+ year old Musar....surprised when it was revealed as a Gruaud Larose (in the old Cordier long-necked bottle), which normally ages very well. Not much joy here tonight.

  • still young appearing still. lovely pure nose. leather, cassis and a floral almost rosy nose. Medium bodied, deep and very pure. The nose is beautiful. There is still fruit and some baking bitter chocolate, and more leather on the palate. There is clarity and prettiness, but there is quite a bit of '75 austerity. Very pure, but an astringency that detracts from the finish. I've been following this wine for around a decade now, around halfway though the stash. All the blles so far had the fruit come out nicely with some air, becoming a complete wine. This is the fist blle that makes me worry about the tannins outliving the fruit. 88 pts

  • An odd wine. Low shoulder and a poor cork, but the wine seemed characteristic of old claret at first, with a decent cherry finish. But after 30 minutes of air, it began to smell corked, and this worsened to the point that after an hour it became undrinkable. Had it not been corked I would have scored it 86.

I couldn't wait and one month later i opened my second bottle and enjoyed it with my friends. The bottle was as good as the first one.For sure this wine will be still enjoyable for few years. • Tasted blind at HM's birthday @ Nicolas. 500ml bottle. Hardly showing its age, light brown but looking surprisingly fresh for such an old wine. Heady alcohol nose with deep dark fruit. Rich caramel texture with cocoa on the palate. Good structure with pleasant tannins. Fruit still fresh. Long finish. Drinking beautifully now but will still go strong for several more years.

  • Wow. Pulled from the cellar, fill was at the shoulder, cork was 80% soaked but came out intact. Lots of white crystals at the top when the capsule was removed. This wine was one wonderful surprise. Upon opening the nose hit immediately; leather, vanilla and surprisingly- fruit. It sat for about 10 minutes or so in the bottle and was then poured but not decanted. Fantastic, rich nose and so delicious! The fruit didn't hit until about 10 seconds in and I couldn't believe the length. It just went on and lingered. This wine was layered, balanced and subtly intense. I was really very, very impressed. I have one left and will drink it within a couple months. The wine was a bit thin, but not terribly so, given the age. It was cloudy throughout and brown at the edge. There was a good, but not ridiculous, amount of sediment. I imagine this wine was even better 1 or 3 years ago, but who knows? I certainly would recommend it now tho, if you have the opportunity.

  • This wine was really outstanding. As I was hesitating a little between different vintage wines, the sommelier in the restaurant recommended it for its elegance and complexity after 33 years of aging. I was a bit worried it would have totally lost its fruit and be in a state of relative decline. But I knew the 1975 vintage was a good one in the Medoc area so I took a chance, and what a nice surprise! The tannins were not totally resolved and the fruit was still very present but in a quite confitured way. The colour was something between grenat and brick (a bit more like brick), not so dark. The nose was intense and rich, the attack extremely smooth, the mouth complex and leathery with aromas of dried fruits and a hint of chocolate, and the length incredible. My wife also liked it a lot. In fact I dedicated this wine to her 33d birthday! We still had the delicate taste of this wine the next morning. It stayed in our mouth the whole night and was still enjoyable as we woke up the next day, such was the length! I think this wine had reached a very high level of maturation. It would very probably have been superb to drink in other levels of maturation as well. I don't really know if it can age much more, but probably a few more years... I also think this wine was excellent value for what we paid. The bottle was an old-style bottle of 73 cl, in a format that doesn't exist today (wider and shorter). The mere appearance of the bottle is also a charming element which contribute to a unique experience. I recommend this wine warmly to any wine lover who has the chance to come across it, provided it has been aged in perfect cellar conditions.

  • Casual Dinner at Le Titi -for an out of towner (Le titi de Paris): Medium color. Dry in the mouth. Short finish. The wine was complex with dirty diaper, smoke, and cooked ground beef. But this wine did little to excite.

  • John Chapman meets the three Headed Monster (Le Titi Paris(Arlington Heights, IL)): nose: bringing some bootsy collins on the nose(ie the funk) with some cassis and black currants

taste: a bit dried out, which can be indicative of the vintage, with some various funky earth tones, cassis, and bits of black currants

overall: basically no fruit. Its a problem with the vintage as the tannins have outstripped anything resembling fruit and all is left is tertiary characteristics. A solid wine with a thin mid palate and little finish, though the attack is earthen laden. in a way, this is a good wine to experiment with at the right price, but not all that exciting and I was looking forward to more from the cordier era of Gruaud(though it still had the cool old school cordier bottling)

  • Unmistakably Gruaud Larose. It has that classic dusty earthy leathery component, mixed with red fruit, including a bit of cherry. Just the tiniest bit of bricking around the edges. The tanins that held the 1975 vintage in their grasp for so long have finally released the wine and there's no more stringency and no more bite. Uncorked but not decanted 90 minutes in advance. Decanted to avoid the sediment and then immediately poured. Gets better in the glass after 20 minutes. Very good to excellent but not outstanding is where this falls.

Agree with previous taster (cellarid). Dark brick color. Very aromatic. Nice acidity. Tannins resolved only partially. Very long finish. Best after 1-2 hours in decanter. I think, this wine has good potential for another 10 years.
