Another Wine gathering at RJ’s; 4/4/2024-4/7/2024 (Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina): En magnum. Exquisitely perfumed nose displaying perfectly ripe black and red fruit, blackberry, raspberry, Vosne spice, classic DRC stem, a hint of sous bois, rose petal, licorice, spicy spices and mineral. Excellent concentration, incredibly layered opulent yet pure black fruit, rich yet perfectly harmonious, beautifully detailed and weightless, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long pure black fruit driven finish with stem and rose petal at the end. This is drinking perfectly. This can easily improve for a couple more decades.

Richebourg and Meursault: Opened an hour before pouring. Very delicate and unctuous. Didn't have the signature DRC nose upfront. Some commented it seemed more developed than expected for its age. I agree, but I like the development. Lifted red fruit and silky tannins. Had more of the DRC signature on the finish. Not the WOTN by any means but a very enjoyable drink.

Expectation is always high when it comes to prestigious Domaines. With that in mind, this is still an outperforming 2006 that is ageing gracefully with barely any peppery note. Fragrant red berries, strawberries, sweet rose petals and sleek mineral undertone. Delineated with fine-grained tannins, really well-integrated and poised. Many 2006 reds have tertiary notes of wet autumn leaves and musty earth scents, this however is clean and primary. Hint of tertiary note of dry aged ham intertwined with the sweet stem note. In my opinion this is at a great stage to enjoy now, slightly saturated with touch of maturity, but plenty of freshness and floral notes left in the tank. Effortless finish, delicious. (93-94/100)

We had it blind against a 2006 richebourg from Meo, the magic of DRC wines is that they always make wine that have such a finesse and delicatesse , this is really their trade mark ! pffff every time I'm blown away, and yes the nose is like really how only french pinot can smell, it is razor sharp and at the same time so delicate, it had this nice red fruit like cherry but not to sweet , so when the structure in the mouth is also from the same level , this make the wine have such a great great balance, I'm sure the terroir is the magic that made this wine too have this quality , we , I'm so lucky !

3 days in Napa: Arkenstone, Memento Mori, Maxem, The French Laundry, Christopher Tynan, Kinsman, Harlan, Vice Versa, Accendo, Fairchild, Macdonald, and a truckload of others (Napa): Earthy and funky black cherry flavors dolphin their way in and out of waves of furry tannins, further warming the palate with plum, allspice, and faint burnt orange rind notes. Finishes slightly chewy and wooly until the fruit returns into play and reverberates back on the palate, reoffering the core fruit again and extending the flavor. This really hit its stride after about thirty minutes of having been open. This window lasted about an hour or so before extended air and slightly warmer temperatures started to shut it down. 95-96 points.
Hand-to-God I have no idea how to gauge where the optimum drinking window is for a wine like this. My experience here with this producer is so limited, I am even hesitant to author a tasting note. For you big baller DRC freaks who can play in the big sandbox while the rest of us kiddies watch on the sidelines, hats off to you. This is the kind of wine that humbles us novice wannabe wine devotees and makes me want to continue to learn more (a lot more), and also reminds me how even more I don’t know. In any event, I thoroughly enjoyed it with a little bit of air and some swirling. I did prefer it at a cooler service temperature, but that is often a general preference I have for red wines, especially reds with some age. A very special bottle of wine popped by our hosts. A thousand thank yous to Patrice and Samantha Breton for their continued graciousness and generosity.

Tightly knitted and regal DRC that has the signature stems, perfume and transparency. Generally not a big fan of 2006 DRC, but the Richebourg is clearly a big step above RSV, GE and Echezeaux. Drinking well for a young Richebourg.

Dog Year Wines (Yan, National Gallery, Singapore): A superb wine, even though this was easily a decade from peak. The nose was deep and compelling, with wonderful draws of sweet black cherries and plums seasoned with gobs of violets, earth and roasted meats, these with a liberal infusion of wood spice. Rather more reserved than the blushing beauty of a Musigny we had alongside, but this was very attractive nonetheless. The palate was another story - full and powerful and absolutely mouthfilling, a true Richebourg, with a deep seam of blueberries and black cherry flavours, these lined with a spine of stony mineral and then a liberal bloom of wood spice, all leading into a wonderful long, full, generous finish. There was so much power on this, yet also an effortless grace and sinewy strength. Great structure too, with a velvety grip of tannins and beautifully integrated acidity that kept that wine floating across the mouth. A tremendous wine. Drinking well enough now, but this should really hit its stride 8-10 years from now.
In a Galaxy Far, Far Away - Richebourg ! (Vancouver, BC, Canada): Darkest red of 7 DRC Richebourg’s tasted at this incredible dinner event - with mild raspberry and nutmeg on the nose. Moderate mid-palatal grip with fleshy cranberries melding into a mild herbaceous rose petal finish painted with subtle Guk-ganjang soy and bergamot. Enjoyable now but better in 5-10 years.

DC/Chicago Wine Dinner Extravaganza (Officina - Wasington, DC): From magnum. Almost all red fruit aromas, followed by both red and black berry flavors. Great fruit is the star here, but spice is just behind it, even if not as expressive as the greatest vintages of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg. Clearly ripe and fleshy, yet also balanced. Just a bit of earth is started to emerge, so while this is so charming and enjoyable, I am confident this has upside from here as more nuance emerges and unfolds.

Annual Chicago winos visit - Champagne, White Burg, DRC, La La and SQN (Officina - Washington D.C.): En magnum, ideally stored bottle. Expressive beautifully mature yet energetic nose displaying subtle sweet red fruit with a hint of black, raspberry, blackberry, plum, a hint of stem, Vosne spice, sap, roasted nuts, caramel, perfect amount of sous bois and mineral. Perfectly harmonious youthful palate, layers upon layers of very fine red fruit, silky, precise and detailed, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long subtle sweet red fruit driven finish with caramel and Vosne spice at the end. The resonating Vosne spice and truffle note at the end are both fascinating and hedonistic. Perhaps not as complex, i.e. less Vosne spice and Chinese medicine as La Tache but displaying perfect harmony. Absolutely gorgeous.

A very pretty nose of rose petals, blood plum and cherries. It is complex, fine, full and layered. At its core is sweet cherry, at the tale, tart cherry crunch. There’s plenty of mineral to the back-end.

This bottle was opened at an amazing restaurant where it was enjoyed with an 11 course tasting menu. The wine was decanted for approximately 45 minutes and was clear and lighter to mid deep red in colour with a light nose of sweet berries. In the glass were flavours of not overripe cherries blended with some orange citrus. The tannins and acidity were both quite light but in perfect balance with the alcohol levels and the finish lingered for quite a while. Of course drinking any DRC is a special treat but tonight, this bottle was wonderful and paired perfectly with the meal.

Memorial Day Mondo Event - Burghounds & Bordelais: I don't care who you are... that is damn good juice. I could sit and smell this wine all night long without ever drinking it. Incredible nose... absolutely incredible. "Exotic" would be an appropriate word for this wine... not in a California Pinot sense, but in a everything Burgundy sense. Of the four times I've had the pleasure of drinking DRC, Richebourg is always my favorite (even better than La Tache). This won WOTN for the Burgundy flight (no surprise). It was blinded too, I promise.

Wines at Mike's: A bright, vibrant, deep Ruby colour. A beautiful fragrance, led by violets, dark roses and other florals, mixed Asian spices, small, ripe raspberries and red and black cherries. A high toned, very pure bouquet. Amazing purity and crystalline fruit on palate. Very precise, driven, focussed and linear. A melange of red and black berry fruit. Beautifully poised and balanced. It almost makes the Perrot-Minot (going back to it) look clumsy and broad by comparison (but that's unfair to the Perrot-Minot). Tasting it blind it had to be (1) a DRC, and (2) a Richebourg, but I picked the vintage as, first, 2002, and then 2007. I would have expected a 2006 to have had the potential to get here in a few years. However, at the end of 2015, I would have expected the wine to have been more closed ... Presently gorgeous, this Richebourg of course will still reward significant cellar time.

Third bottle of this wine and it continues to under preform. You expect more. This time it's very green and if I had this blind I would have guessed 2004. 2008 from Gros Frere et Souer killed it tonight.

Many other tastings notes say that the 2006 vintage is "delicate" - I totally agree, but also stress that "delicate" is not in anyway negative or lesser. Everything about this wine from the nose, to initial palate...mid-palate, mouth feel and finish is spectacular and fully worthy of being a DRC. I gambled that this wine was not shut down and I was right. The tannins in this wine will forever be in my mind...the term Velvet does not do it justice. There are velvety tannins and there are tannins from a 2006 DRC Richebourg!

Way too young at this point. Very sophisticated and fresh with the normal DRC class but not a big wine at this point. Question is if this wine ever will open up and give away more of everything. This is not even close to the La Tache of the same vintage or Leroy´s Richebourg which was tasted the same evening.

Wednesday Night Burgundies (Bar Boulud): Lots of youthful muscle to this, and it initially seemed bound up in so much tannin that I couldn't get a read on anything else beyond a subtle cured-meat quality. I wouldn't say it managed to open up and betray its secrets, but it did compose itself to the point where even though it's still very tannic, it shows a serious sophistication in its tannic structure, like this geodesical web wrapped around a perfectly spherical body. I've gotten that sense before from La Romanée; not sure I've ever found such symmetry in Richebourg, so this is definitely a very well-put-together wine even if you can't discern much beyond the shape.

G6 (Dave): Cloudy light ruby color. Beautiful cherry nose with some nice earthiness. Tastes of black cherry, violet, spice and raspberry. Very good balance. Chewy tannins. Earthy finish that seems a bit closed and primary at this point in the wines evolution. Needs time. Unfortunately I think this wine is suffering a bit being in the company of some very impressive and massive Northern Rhone wines.

The nose is jump up and down, do the happy dance, freaking gorgeous. Palate was controversial amongst tasters, with several saying it was thin, and not as good as the '04 at this stage. I completely disagree that this is inferior to '04. '06 is a delicate, graceful wine whereas '04 was powerful and lush by comparison. I quite liked '04, it's just different. This wine whispers, and that will disappoint those who want it to shout. It's soft red fruit, garnet color, and light texture. To me, this was extremely memorable and I was honored to taste it.

My First DRC and Many Other Treats (Mirabelle, Austin, TX): This wine was lovely. Medium to big tannins. Cola and spice. It screamed California to me and reminded me of a recent Radio Coteau as well. Dark fruits and in better balance than some of the other young DRCs on this evening. My favorite of this flight. Nice.

A clear step up in class. This wine is frustrated, it has so much to offer but it is bound up so tightly in a kinetic ball of minerals. There are some beautiful floral notes with anise and smoked meats. It has great proportion and purity delivering a flavour punch without being obtrusive or overt. The finish is the true peacock’s tail and this is as good a young wine that I’ve drunk over the past year.

Somewhat lighter and more bubble-gum pink toned that the Grands Echezeaux. The nose is really deep and spicy, showing powerful cherry and warm earth aromas, but lacks the impact of the Grands Echezeaux. Perhaps a little closed, but certainly muscular and tight rather than flamboyant. Mouth entry is wondrous – really seamless – but only medium weight. Lovely freshness, and predominantly red fruit. Mid-palate gives up powerful, deep, spicy fruit, touched with kirsch and the most fabulously refined, fine-grained, tannins. Finishes as seamlessly as it began. Really harmonious, but I sense its glories are rather hidden today, and my “score” may prove to be rather conservative on this one. . 4

Friday after Thanksgiving (FAT) - Part 1 - Burgundy 2006 (Palm Beach Gardens FL): Small taste, brief note. Much like the LT just tasted, but slightly bigger start and less textured or nuanced from there. Nicely floral with lots of red and black cherry. I couldn't decide if I liked this or RSV more.

Third bottle of this wine and it continues to under preform. You expect more. This time it's very green and if I had this blind I would have guessed 2004. 2008 from Gros Frere et Souer killed it tonight.

Wide open, showing great. Red fruit dominated with floral overtones and a hint of rose petals already. Velvety and great intensity.

Transparent, gamey, meaty. Rose petal after some time. Violet.

Yet another bottle of this wine, this time served blind. Very elegant but with a nose with elements from Italy and nebbio at first. Again this disapoints geiven the pedegree. My guess was Grands Echezeaux. No sign of Richebourg to my mind.

Strangely enough this is the least impressive Richebourg I have had. Of course it's a good drink, but you expect more from DRC, even from a young wine.

Neville's Pre-Wedding Dinner (Atelier, Sydney): Beautiful, beguiling nose of rose petals, red cherry, complex earth and a hint at orange peel. The palate is incredibly approachable already, it is wonderfully balanced and seamless. There is a restrained power to the fruit here and super length. Delicious in its youth.

DRC Superbowl (Phoenix, AZ): Soft and elegant -- this wine is the essence of dried rose petals. So pure, a very memorable wine.

just read lesnob's note, and then put me in the 04 camp over this, not that there's a damn thing wrong with this embryo. thin is only a relative term for the palate that i used when talking about 04 v. 06 at about the same time in their lifespans. still...i've gotta talk about now because lesnob is 20+ years younger than i am. god bless you younguns who will taste this at maturity. uh...hold. :-)

Really harmonious, but I sense its glories are rather hidden today, and my “score” may prove to be rather conservative on this one. . 4
