On opening, really classic on the nose. Plenty of cassis and currant. I wouldn't have guessed the vintage was 2003. Decanted and continued to open up over the next hour.
The nose begins to jump out of the glass. More exuberant red fruits along with clove, cinnamon, blood orange, sandalwood, smoke, and iodine. The palate has become more open-knit and juicy with a fair amount of tannin left to resolve but does not necessarily detract from the enjoyment of the wine. Quite lovely. Drink now and into the next decade.

Decanted and followed for about three hours. Ripe cherry, creme de cassis, and cigarbox on the nose. Palate the same with a nice line of herbaceousness and menthe following on the finish. Tannins smooth and integrated. Really good bottle and exactly what I'm looking for from a well-aged medoc wine. Paired very nicely with pan roasted chicken and a simple jus...

Fruit heavy nose with cassis, strawberries, licquorice and hints of firestones / dust.
On the palate nice, balanced development with an initial acidic bite, immediate dry tannic counterbalance and sweet dark cassis, toffee and roast aromas coming through towards the end.
Still feels very lively. Pleasure to drink and an excellent value.

Really good drinking slot for this wine right now. Still has a lot of dark fruit left and at the same time starting to show of some nice secondairy aromas. Overall a very expressive impression, i guess it also derives from the very warm vintage. Good length and very succulent. The second day it had faded rather significantly, quite surprising to be honest. I guess that is a sign that this wine will still hold on for appx another 5 years or so, but it is in a very good moment right now. Drink and don’t save for to long!
Pop & pour this is very tannic out of the gate. As expected the fruit is subdued at this stage, and not getting a lot of savory character. Might be best with grilled beef. I feel like i waited too long to open this bottle. Hopefully this opens with some air time.

I would say it’s probably in a very good drinking window right now as I also prefere my Bordeauxs rather young. I don’t think it will improve much over time from this stage, rather change in character. Overall very enjoyable and nice!

A sunny Day at the german Outback (South of Hamburg, outback, Lüneburg heath): Nearly the same showing of this MG as the day before, starting with some little grainy tannin, with some one hour aeration this bottles again turns out to a very fine mature Bordeaux, can be drunk now but no need to hurry, will keep this condition approximately 5++ years, ***(+)

From MG: fine fragrance of forest soil, blackberry and dark cassis, some little grainy tannin at the start, with some air turns out to a very harmonic Bordeaux with soft tannin, meaty though, entering its top drinking window now with very good persistence, very delicious and very good pairing with grilled lamb and iberico pork chops, but can easily be kept in your cellar for another 5(+) years, especially from a bigger bottle, ***(+?)

Restrained nose of dark cherry, creme de cassis, and cedar. Round and supple with sweet red and dark fruit followed by prominent, delicious French oak on the mid palate with a lingering menthe on the finish. The wine's delicate complexity was overwhelmed by a Salisbury steak over mashed potato pairing. I feel this rich vintage is better served as quaffer than food wine.

Positively surprised by my first CS since long. Silky nose, with lots of sweetness in the nose, subtle cask, vanilla, tobacco, cocoa notes. Fully developed in the mouth. Medium bodied, combining classical BDX notes of mature fruit, tobacco, caramel, chocolate, a hint of menthol in the finish. Perfect, most enjoyable match to our lamb shank. This is why I buy (and wait) for my Bordeauxs.

Chasse Spleen Never fails. One of my favorite chateaux and reasonable prices to boot. This wine is in a very happy place right now. Cherry and red berry fruit. Fruit is still very much on the fore front. Some secondary notes coming trough. Great balance. Silky tannins. Very enjoyable. Will buy again if I get the chance. You should to ...!

Easy drinking charmer, without any of the excess you often find in this vintage. The wine is round, accessible and with a soft, red berry, earth and tobacco character. This is drinking at what is probably its peak today.

dusty nose with some smoke and burned touches, in the mouth there's an interesting interaction between the bitterness and the acidity, fresh red fruits and not overripe which can occur in the 2003 vintage, the warm vintage shows

Purchased at the Chateau during visit September 2016.
+ Nose - somewhat dusty, very ripe red fruit, woody, beans (?) + Taste - round in mouth, some heat, finesse + Finish - still some fruit, nice and long, clearly between secondary and tertiary phase.
A lovely Chasse-Spleen, but couldn't convince me entirely ... hmm.

First day: still young in colour. Restraint nose. Sandy tannins after half an hour, but smooth after two hours. Medium weight, in a rather classically lean style, with a surprising high acid (regarding the hot vintage) and red fruits (Cherries). Gains a lot in the glass. I´m close to give it a 90 score. Power on the mid palate and a decent finish.
Two days later (the leftovers were refilled in a small bottle stored in the fridge): The wine gained a lot of weight but remained juicy and fruity. Just lacks a bit complexity to be great. Now a 91 score. No hurry to drink at least until 2025.

Bordeaux (Portobellos): Fruity nose with just a little alcohol peaking through and a bit of fine leather. The leather carries through on the palate with soft and ripe dark fruits. The warm vintage shows a little. Enjoyed it.

This went skiing and the chalet liked this wine. Great blackcurrant, good notes of tobacco and choc. Fruit forward but there is more to this wine if you let it breathe and warm a little. Like many 03s, don't pop and pour unless you want to reaffirm the stereotype of the vintage.

Decanted two hours before drinking. Beautiful and très Bordeaux bouquet with good cassis, graphite and lovely smoky oak. Same on the palate plus other dark berry fruits, good acidity and round tannin. The wine is completely ready now and will probably stay on this level until 2018 at least. I have one more bottle, so there will be a follow up.

Fourth bottle of a case - never seen a temp above 53 since acquisition upon release. Like many 2003's basically a fruit bomb, although a fine one. Beautiful cabby cassisy black fruit across the mid palate without much if any complexity ( and it will never in my view develop complexity) - no cigar box, no cedar, etc. - just rich tasty fruit. Like many 2003's in my experience (twice with this wine) the fruit bomb makes it a wow drink for those who are not particularly knowledgeable about wine, but it also makes it a fine and acceptable drink for those who are very much into wine. Has surprising length given its pedigree but at the end I get that tip of the tongue acid note that I associated with acidifying. Have really well stored bottles of this wine? They will keep just fine.
Almost reminds me of a poor man's Rausan Segla.

Clear, dark purple red, fading slightly to the rim. Clean nose, cassis dominant, but some green notes too. Thin to medium palate, tannins not that well integrated, fruits fading a bit, acid still a bit dominant. Medium finish. Disappointing. However, second tasting seven hours later showed the wine more positively, had filled out a bit and come together more in the glass. Seemed it needed a lot more contact with air than I had given it initially (2 hours in a decanter). So I've upped my score slightly on this basis, but it's still not anything to write home about.

2003 Bordeaux Tasting with Friends (Chez Moi, Paris): Clear, dark ruby red, fading a little to the edge. Clean nose, lots of dark fruits but slight green notes, with time some spice. Light-medium palate, fruit starting to fade, tannins very evident and strong acidic backbone. Shortish finish. Feels like this isn't going to have time to come into balance before the fruit fades completely. 24 hours later: More complexity on the nose but palate remains unbalanced and rather thin and sharp, even though the tannins have softened. Drink up but give it time in a decanter.

NobleRottersSydney - 2003 reds (Pazzo, Surry Hills): [cork, 13%] {Graeme} Double-decanted 3 hours prior. It’s an aging Bordeaux nose, but it does veer a little on the baked side, even through the smoky, cigar-box aromas. There’s a nod to currant fruit on the palate, with medium dusty tannins, and medium body. Acid is fairly soft, and although it coats the tongue evenly, there’s a warmth denseness of texture you mightn’t expect and which just costs it a little for freshness. It was a scorching vintage; this doesn’t taste too hot, but I don’t think it’s got anywhere further to go and should be drunk (enjoyed) over the next few years.

superb and intense cassisnose, for this very hot and dry year impressively fresh on the palate, not too smooth, little harsh, oldschool style, herb elegance, mid- to fullbodied, blackberrys, earthy, smoky, long finish, long life ahead, 88- 90+?

Dark ruby-garnet. Expressive nose of coffee, liquorice, cedar, pencil shavings, dark cherry and spice. Medium+ bodied and fleshy, with juicy tannins, balancing acidity and a long aftertaste. Fruit is ripe but by no means cooked or jammy and overall the wine is balanced and at a good point to be enjoyed with 5 to 10 years of life ahead.

What a crazy year it was! The european climate moved south just to confuse us all. No, this isn't exactly your textbook bordeaux, but quite a nice sniffer anyway. Deep aromas of strawberry jam, english fruitcake, ripe plums, sweet liquorice, spicebox and good vintage port. On the palate big, smooth and fruity - and surprisingly well balanced. No dry, hard or dusty tannins. No heaviness or excessive alcohol. Well, not really much of a structure to match food either. But lots of dense ripe silky fruit and almost grenache-like hedonistic pleasure (strange thing RMP didn't like it more). Now and over the next few. On its own, or with cheese.

Appearance: Bright and clear, deep intensity ruby colour, with garnet rims and legs. Nose: Clean, with medium (+) intensity and developing aromas of blackcurrant, black cherry, blackberry, liquorice, cedar, chocolate and savory. Palate: Dry, with medium acidity and medium tannin of ripe and fine-grained texture. Medium in alcohol, showing medium (+) body and medium intensity flavors of blackberry, plum, black cherry, cedar and cloves. Medium in length. Conclusion: Good quality Bordeaux with a fairly intense and complex nose, showing good development. On the palate, the wine is overall in balance, reasonably intense but comparatively not as complex as the nose, with a reasonable length. Ready to drink now but can benefit from further ageing of another 5-7 years.

I'm becoming a large fan of many 2003 Bordeaux because of the beautiful fruit expression in mid palate albeit with not much delivery at the finish, and my guess is that it never will be there for many of these wines - a trade-off I find increasingly attractive. This is another example - beautifully pure fruit in the midpalate - on the black fruitish side. It is Bordeaux - lacking the density and weight of New World equivalents; all the while in the modern bordeaux style style. Just beautiful fruit without any hint of a hard edge; tanninc, acid, whatever. It would be easy to say this wine is lacking, which it is perhaps in terms of balance, but what it has is more than enough for me.

Nov 2011, this is drinking perfectly right now. Lovely balance of fruit and tannin, muted bouquet Opens nicely at room temperature and with 1 to 2 hr after decanting. Might be better to use an aerator. Only a little chunky sediment so apart from aeration it doesn't need decanting. I really like this style.

My word, what a difference 18/12 makes. Opened and poured after an hour. Same brick red with good extract, vegetal nose with crushed summer berries, soft entry with round tannins, spice and fruit. long. This wine is at its peak and will only decline over the next few years. A real suprise for an 03

This had a relatively evolved colour and a nice nose with lead pencil and earthy notes, and a hint of dark berry bruit. Medium-bodied texture with a lack of fruit in the mid-palate that was accentuated on day 2. Slightly coarse tannins on the finish, which again were even more obvious on day 2. This is not bad for a wine that cost £11 en primeur, but I would drink up in the next couple of years as the fruit seems to be receding.

Drank over two nights, with and without food. Dark ruby-amber color. Thin fast legs. Nose is musky with oak, cassis and fresh-turned loam. Palate is acidic, thin and weedy with excessively drying tannins. Little fruit. Finish is austere and shrill. Needs more body and less structure. I must be missing something, or have a bad bottle, as I feel this wine is dull (flavor-wise) and has very little excitement or interest.

Dark ruby with very inviting, peppery nose showing mostly secondary and tertiary aromas of bitter chocolate, truffles, aubergines, with an attractive, intensive caramelised kiss. Very good structure, deep and powerful, savoury and long. It's lively and has definitely some way to go (2-3 years) until it shows its capabilities fully. Excellent choice from this particular year. Buy with confidence!

Really nice wine that is still tight. Needs atleast 2+ years before it shows it stuff. Dark extracted wine with minimal fruit on the nose. Very rich on the palate but balance. One of the most balanced 03's I have had. Good structure and modestly long finish. Great value. Tried the next day after being open 24 hrs. Wine is less primary and some red currant fruit (merlot?) is showing through. A winner of a wine.

First of the "own cellar" 2003s for me (have tried a couple in restaurants). Tried to pick something that would be showing now but have a bit of time to go. Opened & poured. Fairly dense. Plenty of dark fruits on the nose. Hint of minerality, also the wood in evidence. Pretty ripe with lots of fruit and concentrated - but it's difficult to pick apart. The tannins are quite evident but not at all harsh. Medium dry finish. Fair bit of sediment. It's nice, but it needs to open up a bit more to become more scented and, well, interesting.

No sediment, decanted 6 hours. Nose: Autumn leaves, fennel, tomato, and blueberry pie Palette: medium body, an echo of the nose with a little added black pepper. Tannins are integrated and granular. Pairing with a roasted rack of lamb, the autumn leaves, black pepper, and fruit, especially the fruit, shining like a new dime. This wine reminded Kimberly of her college days in Chicago, working for C'est Si Bon.

Dark ruby red color; very fragrant, well-structured nose with dark cherry. Full-bodied with no barnyard earthiness, dry fruit, dark cherry, dark chocolate, and spice. A little short on the finish but quite satifsying overall. Great with lamb. Drink from 2008 to 2018.

All very lavish and new-worldy on the nose; warm ripe blackberry fruits and oak. A bit smokier on the palate, but still ripe and curranty, with touch of earth. A warm finish to a clunky palate - only the strong gritty tannins indicate its origin. May age OK medium term, but will likely provide most pleasure young.

Slightly thin but glasscoating crimson, with brick-tinged reflections at the rim. Contemplative nose of coffee, dark chocolate, licorice, mineral bordering on iodine, and dark fruit. Explosion of sweet cherry on the palate. Pleasantly chewy, fruity, woody, tannic, oaky finsih. Interesting wine, structured for relatively short-term drinking.

Mark and Johnna Tag-Team Tasting Note: Day 1: Pop and Pour. Initially, port and the scent of a woman's perfume as she walks by. It tastes like port, but I am unable to distiguish any discrete flavors beyond jammy fruits. Finishes very smooth. Day 2: The nose is more closed and less floral, but a coffee component kicks in. Very tannic. Finishes dry. Decided to pour it into a decanter to give it some air. After about an hour, I get more of the port and flowers, and a bit of coffee/mocha on the finish, which has become smooth again. Perplexing wine. I don't exactly know why, but I like it, and I'm okay with that. Either pop and pour, or give it SERIOUS time (89-91).

DUO, Miami Medoc BYO Wine Dinner (DUO, S Miami Avenue, Miami, FL): Flight 5 #3. Charlie Frumkin's wine. Clearly younger fruitier than its 2000 flight mates. Not surprisingly for the excessive heat of the vintage, a very drinkable wine now. Quite good, but I would still choose the Dominus over it. By process of elimination we knew what wines were in flight 3, and I correctly identified them as 2000 Beychevelle, 2000 Dominus, and 2003 Chasse Spleen.

Overall, I’m impressed, given the price, this is a real value wine. Not hugely over the top concentrated, but good density of dark fruit, coffee grounds & round tannins. It took about two hours to really open up, but drank very well for a young Bordeaux. A rather impressively medium-long finish if not a bit tannic and stout. Let’s see what happens over the next few years.

No formal notes. This wine shows the dark side of the ’03 vintage. Tough structure, biting and slightly hot. Harsh finish even though the wine was opened a few hours prior to drinking. Maybe this will come together with time, but I don’t know. (12+?)

Plenty of dark fruit...nice balance...reminds me more of 2002s than the '03s I've had so far. Tannic, but there's enough fruit to make me think this should age well. Good value for an '03 Bordeaux, and maybe the best Chasse Spleen I've had.

Purchased at the Chateau during visit September 2016.
+ Nose - somewhat dusty, very ripe red fruit, woody, beans (?)
+ Taste - round in mouth, some heat, finesse
+ Finish - still some fruit, nice and long, clearly between secondary and tertiary phase.
