Decanted for over 2 hours. Aromas of cigar box, blackberry, iron and mineral. Flavors of tobacco, blackberry, current, iron and hint of dried plum. Ends with a nice 25-30 second finish. Still in a prime drinking spot.

Diessenhofen on a saturday evening. Pairing it with cote de boeuf from niedermann In schaffhausen. Beautiful purple color. Dried berries, herbs, olives, green capsicum, forest floor, vanilla, black spices, wet mushrooms, really a lovely nose. Med acidity, med body, med alcohol, med flavor intensity, dry tannins, med finish. Perfect balance, dried red fruits, greenness, vanilla, pepper, nice lingering salinity. The mouth is less impressive than the nose. Still very enjoyable.

A reasonable effort in an unremarkable vintage which I thankfully have very little of across the region. The sister bottle to this one was heavily flawed, but this one drank fine. The 2008 was better. This '07 was lighter in color and lacking as much interest in fruit and overall depth and length.uch more pleasant by comparison to the flawed, but not the best showing for PC overall. Probably ly not a lot more life in this year, so drink up.

Bad bottle. Corked reeked on opening and wine had a nose of funky brackishness with a lot of eucalyptus, depressed fruit, and challenging Brett/barnyard. Opened another bottle from same purchase which was vastly better.

Nicely mature, not overly aged but now with tannins light and the deep stone fruits, light notes of leather and herbasous grass coming through. A short decant with modest sediment thrown off. Nicely paired with grilled chicken thighs and eggplant caponata.

Beautiful and concentrated bouquet with concentrated dark berries, mocha and earth. On the palate dark berries, lead pencil, cigar box, a touch of sweetness, beautiful acidity and round tannin. This bottle was a positive surprise again. Still enough power for at least 4 more years and I think the wine will even improve a bit.

This one is singing right now, it could not possibly get better than it is right now. Fruit is still fresh, tannins are velvety, totally balanced. Was wine of the night in a line up with cult wines. Seven Apart Expedition, Donum Year of the Monkey, Aubert Chard, Vaudesir Grand Cru Chablis, 2015 Malescot St. Exupery, Chene Bleu Abelard and others all great wines were considered second to this lousy year second growth. Drink now or forever hold your peace.

Fun to drink. In the last 5 or so years I was hoping, that there is even more to come as this one of the better 2007 Bdx. But I think, it’s showing now all there is.

In line with my note of 11 months ago, this is still quite primary particularly on the nose, but starting to drink well. Black cherry, plum, cedar, and tobacco notes manifest on the nose and palate, and the tannin has continued to smoothen. The palate is a little one dimensional and the finish light and on the shorter side, but overall it is an enjoyable drink.

Fruits are well developed; cherries, pear, and blackberry all still bound by a modest but noticeable tannin. Married well with sundried tomatoes and chicken.

Well structured with no rough edges. Notes of cherries, vanilla and mineral on the nose. Consistent in the mouth with a tightly bound core of fruit, spice and light tannin. This is a good drinking window for the wine and should hold for a number years.

Opened and drank 2005 Boyd Cantenac, 2007 Pontet Canet and 2005 Smith Haut Lafitte one after the other. Surprisingly the 07 Pontet Canet was showing best right now in my eyes. Had drank the 07 for the first and last time at the estate and was not impressed (rated 89 or so), but this is now a Pauillac in perfect balance, middle weight, still good structure. The 05 Boyd Cantenac was a bit lean and thin for 2005, not a bad wine for sure but I liked it 3 years ago better and drinks more like a good 04/06 now. The 05 SHL was probably the most disappointing. Showing plenty of unintegrated oak upon opening. Comes together a bit better with more air but nothing impressive and for sure nowhere near the 98 points Parker saw.

The last couple of years have changed the wine with the tannic wall tamed, and placed it firmly in it's drinking window. The nose is quite fresh, but plum and black cherry are prominent with leather and tobacco and cedar notes. The tannin no longer intrudes and the palate is well balanced, if on the lighter side. I do find the finish underwhelming. 91+

A bottle drunk at home over two evenings from Zalto Bordeaux glass. Colour deep and dark, quite young-looking. On the first evening, such a beautiful, classic Paulliac Bordeaux nose. Spicy, old English Christmas cake, cedar, touches of old leather saddle and tobacco leaf, dried and some freshly cut herbs, ripe, vibrant red cherry and red currant. On the second evening, less bright fruit, more savoury and earthy, with more dry brushwood. On palate, classic, lean, slightly old fashioned claret. Cedar, garrigue, largely red berries and plums and tobacco. On the second evening - not falling over but - more herby, savoury, leathery and earthy. Vibrant acidity - some modernists may find the acids too elevated - and succulent fruit. Long, finishing on those evolved, savoury elements. At its peak. Drink this decade, or so. Claret, like I like it.

In a very good spot with some remaining tannin, dark fruits, excellent length and a chewy mouthfeel. While it was great, I was wondering if it will get better or not. Doesn’t have a lot of tertiary characteristics yet so age may make it more interesting but hard to tell

The Papies join the 11,000 Tasting Notes Club; 2/4/2022-2/5/2022: Such a pretty wine and albeit we did not have time to devant it still delivered . Much like All the good 2007s from Bordeaux this is now bang in its drinking window and just is delicious and with another good decade to go. Soft leather starting to show, light Herby edge. Beautiful once again and an easy 92 with potential still in the bag

Had with beef barbecue ribs, paired very well. With the grill going and all the work of feeding a half dozen humans, didn't take notes, but it was a classic Pouillac, still showing some youth and power, but very ready to drink.

The aroma is a little too much old leather and toasty oak for me. But the palate has surprisingly nice fruit and well integrated tannin. Not sure if this will improve much from here.

Gang of 4 in Covid19 times; Pauillac: Black currants and other dark berries in the bouquet, minerals, tobacco and some stable smells as well. On the palate juicy dark berries, red berries as well, green bell pepper, flowers, juicy acidity and slightly drying tannin.

Still a big brute of a wine, amazing to think this is a 2007. On this occasion tasted at Boodles in a vertical alongside the 01 and 03. Needs a two hour decant and while a good drink now (even a treat), will leave the next bottle until 2023.

Third time tasting this 2007 vintage and have enjoyed watching its evolution from 2016, 2019, and now 2021. It just keeps getting better and better. Definitely hitting an early maturity plateau. While still more fruit driven and primary than secondary or tertiary, after a 1 hour decant this turns into a beautiful wine. As I wrote back in 2019, this is a quintessential Pauillac. Best left bank wine I’ve had from the 2007 vintage. Delicious!

Coravin from a new bottle. Graphite, sweetish dark fruit blending into an open open and inviting wine. More fruit than expected. In a secondary phase moving towards tertiary elements. Tannin still there but a long way into getting resolved. This is in a very good phase. Drink now and the next 5 years. A really good 2007!

Medium deep crimson. Dried red fruit nose with cedar and leather accents. Lacks some depth, as per the vintage. Delicious, and still a slight tannic nip on the finish. Great claret at a good price...buy those off vintages. This gives me plenty of hope for something like the '14's, which I bought enthusiastically. May have another 5-10 years still in the tank.

Muted upon opening. After about an hour this wine starting showing its true potential (especially for an "off" year). Very expressive, with lots of fruit and some secondary flavors as well such as cigar box. Lovely bouquet. Medium finish which kept getting longer. Very light sediment. I think this easily has another 10 years. 92

Unfurled over three nights, settling on sour cherry, cassis, blackberry, layers of fruit, earth, and spices; body took a night to fill in. Mid weight, best on night 2, no rush on these in my opinion.

Last tasted 2 years ago, this is still very primary even after extended decanting. The nose is packed with fruit, primarily cherry and plum, but there is still a wall of tannin to plough through. However, it has to be said that it is perfectly balanced on the palate and finish, but the latter does fall apart at the very end allowing a residual memory of sour tannin. Where this goes to in the future remains to be seen, but its essential components are promising. It is a Paulliac and it really does not lend itself to early drinking, even in a young drinking vintage. I'll try again in a year or two.

On the nose, pencil shavings and black berries. Open up more fully after two hrs. Tannins soften and start of drinking period but not peaked yet. Quite spicy and bit of sweetness.

This oozes confidence and swagger in spades. It showcases Pauillac’s classic richness, power, and structure reminiscent of better vintages. Black raspberries, dark cherries, earth, pencil, and tobacco are enlivened by beautiful intensity, length, and complexity. Cassis and a hint of spiciness announce their presence on the beautiful finish. A complete wine in its own right.

Decanted for over 1.5 hours. Aromas of tobacco, cedar, blackberry and iron. Flavors of blackberry, cherry, currant, mint and an iron note. Ends with a 30+ second finish with blackberry and tobacco notes. This is drinking great right now. From a less heralded vintage this is impressive.

Requires decanting to hit its full stride albeit the wine is drinking very well now and is even better from the one we had back in 2012 ( Papies 91). Nicol who had this blind went straight to cab sauv but the extra ripeness at this stage pointed even to a Napa cab. This is definitely at just the start of its drinking window for our style and definitely a lot more on the fruit than the rest of the left bank 2007s we have tried and has a long way to go. 2007 is proving to be a very solid year in our view ( Also in Burgundy) and we look fwd to having this wine more and more over the next few years. 92-93 for now.
In our view PC is to focus in 2000,2001 and this 2007. These are great wines devout of the price tag of 2009 and 2010 and frankly more exiting than the more homogeneous wine made by the addition of Michel Rolland from the 2008 vintage ( exception to the rule is 2011). That said we haven't had 2009 and 2010 for some time.. We have a note here from our last TN that this was the last time they Used chemical sprays.
Deep ruby Color. Earth, mushroom, hay, blueberries, red fruit, smoke, very pronounced nose. Med acidity, high alcohol, full body, silky tannins, pronounced flavours, quite some pepper and smoke when tasting. To be perfect it misses a bit of structure and roundness. Still very much enjoyed it with our perfectly two day marinated Australian rib eye

Tasted first on pouring on day one. But scored on day 2. The wine presents great elegance for the vintage. Beautifully resolved tannins and PC have managed to use the greenness of the vintage alongside lovely bright cherry and raspberry fruits to create a wine that gives length and complexity. Fantastic effort! Be sure to decant and air well to get this at its best. Very close to peak “in my humble opinion”

Last tasted this in November 2016. Similar tasting experience 3 years later, but it has gotten even better with time in the cellar. This is an extremely well made wine, despite the vintage. While already open for business, I do believe it can continue to evolve for another 5 - 8 years. If drinking now, I highly recommend decanting for at least an hour. Quintessential Pauillac!

My first bottle I drank of several months (maybe more) ago at an extended family get together hit me as an uptight, slender but elegant bottle of wine. Fast forward to now, and I find there's much more here.
The usual fruit, but with tones of rawhide and forest leaves touching the edge of the palate. Mouthfeel is amazing - the texture is meaty, yet smooth on the tongue. Very fine sandiness - which ends with a nicely done finish.
Definitely on the downward swing of cellaring (at least this bottle, my second of four), so I'd start queuing them up if you've got a lot and enjoy them soon.

Served with our first BBQ of the year and paired nicely with the rump and sirloin steaks. Decanted about 90 minutes ahead of time which it certainly benefited from.
Lots of red and some black fruits on the nose. Plenty of acidity on the palate along with red fruits and a very smooth creamy texture which I think is the oak still showing itself to a certain extent.
A hugely drinkable wine that is delicious and ready to go but I suspect there is still quite a bit of secondary evolution to come as it wasn't showing too much of that today.

2000-2011 Pontet-Canet. Second wine of the third flight. One of the lesser vintages on paper and it's also resembled in the glass. By comparison though, probably if you had this on it's own now, it would be a very enjoyable glass of wine over lunch or dinner!

Drank this at Summer Palace with a group of wine enthusiasts. Theme of the evening: Cabernet or Cabernet blends from 2007.
Dark purple in colour with strong notes of cocca, blackberries and ripe plums. Energy level is high but under control; wine is highly approachable at this stage with bright red fruits shining through. Heat, acidity and alcohol all in harmony giving the wine layers and dimensions.
A fine example of how good a wine can be made in a very moderate vintage.

RW supplied at L'escale. Decanted at the table. Fairly expressive nose of black and red fruit, with some tobacco aromas. Medium bodied, pretty dark red color beginning to show its age. On the palate, plums and black cherries, still somewhat tannic, softer and more elegant than I expected, but still with some power behind it. Drinking well currently, but I'd still give it at least a few more years to develop more fully.

Last tasted 10 months ago, I am less impressed on this occasion. While the nose is expressive and developed, with cherry and plum dominant and the tannin reasonably forward, I find the palate and finish underpinned with a residual bitterness. However, the fruit and tannin do balance very well and there is complexity. I still feel the potential is here for it to match the initial critics' rating, but it needs another year or two. It is very approachable and enjoyable now, but personally I am going to be a little more patient. I do wish critics would stop giving over early drinking recommendations, and allow top notch Bordeaux to go through their natural evolvement.

Good classic Bordeaux flavor profile, and especially well done in this vintage. Proof that a great winery like PC doesn't really have bad vintages. Still some time to go on this one, no rush to drink at all. I think it will improve. 91-92 pts.

Last tasted 15 months ago, and the wine has certainly moved forward in its evolvement, but still with further development ahead. It is in its early stages of maturity and does need time in the decanter. The nose is full with cherry and plum and very appealing, if still a little green . The tannin is firm and compliments the fruit, but it is the depth and finish which are outstanding and bodes very well for the wine. This reminds me very much of the 1996 in its early stages of maturity, and that wine transformed itself into something special and is probably my favourite Pontet Canet. This is enjoyable drinking now but with the potential to become a 95 pointer in a few years.

Medium/full bodied, showing age in its color, the wine has entered its secondary stage, with its tobacco, cassis, forest floor and cherry pipe tobacco aromatics. There is fruit in the finish, which has a bit of rusticity in the finish. Drinking well today, you can age it for a few more years if you like, or pop a cork to check it out

Medium-dark garnet. This is quite dark for a 2007. Nose of dark fruit with oak, bakery, more in the riper style. Good mid mouth presence, very dense for a 2007, that is the strong point. A bit too much oak and a touch of heat on the finish are the weak points. Medium finish. A solid effort for this sub-par vintage.

High/Low Blind Tasting - Can you taste the difference? (Amy and Scott's house): A 2 hour decant, served blind next to the 2010 Haut Gravet. 7 out of 14 people preferred this wine, as did I. This wine had significantly more complexity, and fantastic pure fruit. I'm not sure what those other 7 people were tasting. Quite well done, with an upside. Still, I was hoping for a better showing of this today. I could see buying this at up to $70, not sure I'd pay more.

This definitely needs some more time. Another year or two will do wonders. Tasted this a day after the 2004 and it held it's own. I think it will reach similar heights as the 2004. Will be a good but not great Pontet-Canet. Was drinkable and enjoyable, but a few more years will really allow this wine to shine. Has all the stuffing to evolve into a quality wine. Lovely especially given the vintage.

'07 is not nearly as bad of a vintage as the reviews state. These wines are just more approachable at a younger age. This particular bottling is terrific... deep black brooding fruit, signature Pauillac with cedar, licorice, anise, and wet stone. While drinkable now, I won't touch my other bottles for at least 3 more years. It has the structure to get better with age. I'd prefer the tannin to resolve a bit more and for there to be more secondary characteristics in the glass. Nevertheless, Mr. Tesseron and family continue to make great wine.

Agree with many of the reviewers here, a hurculean effort in a bad vintage. A sensual and seductive nose of cherries, plum, and blackberry with a hint of flintiness and chocolate devolves into a medium body on the palate. The front palate emphasizes the relatively complex, structure fruits with a subtle hint of the oak and a nice touch of earthiness. On the back palate the dark fruits of plum and blackberry take hold with a nice balance of tannins and acidity to finish long and silky. Drinking well now, there is sufficient structure to keep going another decade or so.

A very good example of a good chateau in a bad vintage. The fruit is rather cool and slightly minty with light cassis and blackberries. The oak is quite prominent in both the nose and palate. The entry, mid palate and finish is totally seamless. It makes for a slightly complex and very easy drinking wine. Can be enjoyed now.

I've had more than my fair share of the 2007 bdx because I found a bunch on crazy sales. Most have outperformed my expectations and their reviews. This one is a great example. Might be one of the best I've had. Definitely classic pauillac flavors of cedar and graphite and even some mint. It isn't lacking in body, but I suppose the oak is a bit high. Great wine for a great price, particularly since my rich friend says the older vintages aren't even worth it (as this chateau has really upped their game in the past 5-10 years).
PnP and drank over 2 days. The character of the wine was quite true to its Pauillac roots and it certainly did not feel thin or lacking in intensity (as the vintage might suggest). However, the finish was short and I thought the oak was too aggressive. Drank over the course of 24hrs and the oak only got increasingly prominent. Leads me to think that this wine will likely not improve with time. A good effort for an '07 but there's good reason why it's cheaper vs other vintages.

By and large consistent with previous notes, but appears a bit more elegant, a bit silkier. Still slightly weak on the mid-palate for this level, but impeccably balanced and very approachable. A nice option when you feel like drinking young bdx without having to feel guilty

Vertical tasting of Pontet Canet 2003-2012. Less purple than the 2006, but dark, no discolouration. On the nose some creamy oak, dark fruit again, some green bell peppers. Drying tannins on the palate, a bit hard without the generosity of the vintages before. Maybe most similar to the 2004. A bit green with bright acidity. Nice length. It seems that this also needs a bit more time. 90-91+

Open and followed for eight hours. Effusive black fruit aromas. Lovely. Classic crieme de cassis, lead pencil and cedar. The mouth feel is ridiculous - creamy and polished. This is so caressing. The down vintage shows in the finish length and flavor depth, but this is remarkable. 92
The nose had typical bordeaux aromas with soil/earth, slight wisps of smoke, dark berries and pencil lead. Most importantly, the nose was soft and supple with very seductive tones. The palate was more of the same with an elegant and silky texture. The wine had very nice grippy tannins. Fruit was dark but at the same time very airy and wispy. Absolutely no heaviness apart from very slight alcoholic heat from the nose. Finish was moderately short to medium and flavours dissipate towards the slightly alcoholic/heat induced end . Alas, I couldn't give this a higher score as the wine did not have the complexity nor the depth that a higher score warranted. All in all, an extremely pleasant, enjoyable and "quaff-ible" Bordeaux wine made by a fantastic house during a dismal vintage. Could have been much, much worse. A very well made wine and certainly a one of easy enjoyment.

The nose showed tart red and blue fruit with floral tones, a hint of bell pepper and dusty soil. On the palate, I found lean textures with a slight green character to its red fruit. A mix of acid and tannin buzzed across the senses, leaving notes of bitter cherry and minerals on the finish. This is not a bad wine, and it would have probably shown better if not surrounded by so many superior vintages; but on this day, it came across as the weakest wine of the tasting.

The nose was alive and inviting, red and black fruit hidden behind layers of graphite, smoke, and a light brushing of flowers. The palate was clean and focused, tannins leaned towards the round side, but still had some grab on them. Fast finish.
My opinion is that the wine requires no more time. I suspect that there is not enough fruit to hold up much longer then 5 years. The oaking, although not overwhelming, does control the majority of the flavor profile and will eventually reach a point where that is all you taste.
3rd time tasting this wine, and 92 is the peak to which I believe it will reach.

Finally proud owner of the great invention of Coravin and that's why there's so many recent notes. Mind you, I haven't drunk all this wine in such a short time! Just tapped my bottles over the last two weeks every now and then. The PC 2007 is ready to drink and I love it. Specially at cellar temperature. Directly when poured it's got all those classic elements except for density and longevity. Very uplifting, refreshing and elegantly lean but no harsh tannins. Fades rather quickly so I wouldn't air it too much before drinking. Again a matter of taste. 92-93p

Frutta di bosco sotto spirito, liquore all' uvetta.

Relatively light-weight but with nice smokey fruit and a dollop of oak that has just about settled. Soft tannins and gentle acidity. Likely to hold another 10 years.

The fruit is impressive at first and there is real class here, at least in glimpses. However, there are also moments of weakness, like a somewhat hollow mid-palate and a shorter than desirable finish. Decent grip though.
I`ve had three bottles of the 2007 over the past two years and I think it drinks well now. The tannins suggest that it has several good years ahead, but I think I`ll drink my final two bottles while the fruit is still as good as it is now.

Had a glass at Chateau. From memory / no notes taken. An remarkable effort given the vintage but not a wine I enjoyed much or would consider buying. Still a pretty dark garnet, fairly high extraction noticeable on the palate with dark fruit, some earth and oak, but also some bitterness, lacks real elegance and balance roundness, fine tannins, short to medium tannins. Having had the 1991 just recently, I think this will last and might even show better several years down the road. 89(+?)

lakrids kraftiga taniner, gott, lite apelsinskal i eftersmaken, även tobak och cigarrlåda. Vinet är väldigt slutet och behöver mer tid men dock gott nu med.

In view of the wet vintage of 2007, the quality surprises me. Dark cherries, mints and hint of barnyard with good acidity. Mid-full body with soften tannins and medium-long finish. It is good to drink now, but may improve further in 2-3 years.Very enjoyable indeed!

Compared against a range of various Bordeaux from 2002-2010 and the lightness of 2007 comes through. Pencil shavings, blackcurrants and mint aromas. Medium bodied with rather high acidity. Still think it's a very good wine even though my enthusiasm from the last time was dampened by the competition on this occasion. Drink now and for the next 3-5 years.

Medium to full body in color with long skinny tears, not staining the glass. Bouquet was surprisingly very Napa in style, dominated by wet earth, graphite, espresso, a touch of dark fruit and iron in the backdrop. Entry has soft caressing tannins, however with sharp acidity and an oxide tinge creating a mouthwatering effect. Palate has iron, salt tinge, and almost taffy like dried fruit ending in a medium finish of dried fruit and iron. This is a vibrant wine of a certain pedigree but presented with definite challenges in delivering power and balance. Drink in the near term.

Inky, but fresh fruit. Blackcurrants! Lots of pnecil shavings and a little barnyard as well. Medium body, great intensity and a really really long finish. Nice balanc and perfect amount of dry tannins.

Pontet-Canet Vertical: A noticeably lighter red colour than the 2005. More classical Bordeaux bouquet, red fruited showing underbrush, graphite and a little tobacco, with lifted florals. Similar aromatic profile to the 2001 or 2004. On palate an absolute classic, old fashioned Bordeaux. Refreshing with lovely, succulent acid structure. The flavours are red currants, tart red cherries, raspberries, cedar with some brushwood and spice. Not more than medium weight but with good structure and good, well integrated ripe tannins and oak. Quite seamless. Good length. Quite approachable now, drink in the next 5 to 10 years. A throwback to an earlier era.
Alfred talked about his mildew problems with the 2007 vintage, which make this wine, in a very underrated vintage, a triumph.
Chateau Pontet Canet Vertical Tasting Wine Dinner with Melanie Tesseron (Nicolas Le Restaurant): Compare side by side with 08 and both showed dark opaque core, but 08 is more vivid and vibrant. Nose is less expressive and powerful than other vintages but fresher, more elegant and developed, tobacco, cigar box, blackcurrant, sweet licorice and hints of leather. Good richness on entry, with nice notes of tobacco, blackcurrant, raspberries, black and red fruits, hints of earth and leather. Lean and fresh acidity, lighter on bodied but smooth on mid-palate. Good medium+ finish with chewy tannins. Not bad but lacking real substance and a little weak compared to other vintages, but unsurprisingly other tasters liked it as it is the most approachable wine of the night.

Like another reviewer, I found this really disappointing. A mouthful of fruit, and then everything overwhelmed by acidity. Even after a 4 hour decant there was still too much acid for my taste. I will leave the rest for at least another year

Disappointing. I found the wine to be a huge gob of cabernet-based fruit on the mid-palate with too much acidity on the finish. Even though i know this was a difficult vintage i expected more complexity from pontet-canet. I will wait a couple of years to open my next bottle.

Excellent wine, deep red brick color, pencil lead nose, ripe soft fruit and a touch of forest on the palate with velvety tannins, smooth, balanced and elegant, totally approachable now, glad I opened at this age. Really well done for a challenging vintage.

Impressed with this given a bad year. A bit one dimesional but so very enjoyable. I think it needs more time. I was most impressed with the supple mouthfeel and the moth coating finish. I didn't get much on the nose.

Double decanted. Powerful plum and cherry nose with vanilla notes on opening. After an hour the cedar and some greenish scents emerge in a positive way. Well structured and great balance with freshness and elegance. Drinks well now. The tannins are ripe and just firms it up. First P-C tasted and I'm impressed. If it's like this in a poor year it must be fantastic in a good one.

Dark cherries in the bouquet. Concentrated and juicy. Medium ripe dark forest fruits. A lot of acidity and a short finish. So far my blind notes. The wine was popped and poured and the acidity too prominent. The wine is probably going into its dump phase. It is not really a pleasure now. Probably around 2017 - 2019 everything will have softened a bit and it will be more pleasurable. I don't think this will ever be really great. No score for today.

I decanted the wine for 1 1/2 hours, poured it back into the bottle and consumed it over three days. The wine kept improving with air. It was medium to dark purple in colour and offered some floral notes, black currant, raspberry, candies, graphite, cedar, tobacco and a hint of bell pepper on the nose. On the palate the medium-bodied wine showed black currant, raspberry, blackberry, graphite, spices, some tobacco and a hint of bell pepper, paired with medium to medium-plus fine tannin and acidity and very good length. The wine shouted “Pauillac” and “Cabernet”, so I guess the Tesseron’s got that part right, and was lighter on the palate than most of the recent vintages of Pontet Canet. A great success for the vintage; I liked it best on day three and would recommend decanting for at least two hours. 89+ points for the time being.

Nice efforts for such a bad vintage; fruit forward nose with ripe cherries and creamy vanilla; the palate, fruity and delicious yet still somewhat tannic; the finish, mostly dark fruits and bitter chocolate; overall, drinkable and enjoyable, so 90-91 points for now; not sure if this wine could improve much further with more cellar time though.

Big blueberry and blackcurrant nose and palate. Tannins surprisingly submissive but, with lots of glass swirling, this was surprisingly approachable. Great for a young Bordeaux - I wouldn't try this with a PC from another, more structured, vintage (got burnt on a PC 2000 recently). Without the tannins and acidity its hard to see this for the cellar though. Enjoy.

Upon opening the wine was quite acidic, an unctuous alcoholic nose and spicy. Decanted and waited. I was out to dinner with my best friend at the top italian restaurant in DC and as soon as I walked in I had them decant. I checked its progress every 20/30 minutes and right on the dot at 2 hours the floodgates opened and the wine was ready.
Earthy and still a bit tannic this wine had notes of licorice, green grass, kiwi and bright red cherries. The mouthfeel was mildly velvety and the tannins were pleasantly rounded (not perfect yet though). Over the next hour as we drank it continued to relax and open up and byt the last sip had more red ripe fruit but no jammy characteristics.
Overall a very nice wine after 2+hrs decant, 89/90 on a blended scale.

On openning: Nose - tannic, limited. Palette - Abit tannic, but nice. Delicate pauillac fruit. 03. After 30 minutes decant: Nose - no change. Palette - Classic pauillac. Atleast a 93, possibly 94. Pontet Canet has definitely improved their game this decade.

2000-2009 vertical of Chateau Pontet-Canet, with Alfred Tesseron (Roberson Wine, South Ken, London): A wine that divided the Papies on whether it will evolve into something very good . For the moment it starts of with an open, Herby, floral nose with good fruit which is quite a bit developed even at this age. Granted it is young and sharp, with good, firm tannins but in no way is this a thin wine or an average vintage wine like we would expect from an 07. Only on the finish you feel it is a bit thin. We did not agree if this has any future or not… (Nicol 90 / Andreas 92)
As a note from AT, in 2007 due to mildew he said that he lost his nerve and ordered to spray with chemicals ( thus breaking from the Organic tradition since 04) something he has regretted since. Never again he said.

Pontet Canet Dinner (Texture London): Powerful nose with a lot of fruit. Slightly thin on the mouth but really drinking now. I do not think it has the legs to last long term.
Alfred had to revert back to spraying (3 times) this year because of a bad mildew attack. He reserves the right to do the same if needed in the future to save a crop.

Dark, rich, hedonistic and ageworthy 2007! A great wine for the vintage. Really enjoyed and is a credit to the developments at Pontet... But to me this was not very 'pauillac' and still about $200/case more than I would pay for more

2012 CellarTracker Bordeaux Trip; 5/21/2012-5/24/2012 (Bordeaux, France): 70% Cabernet Sauvignon / 25% Merlot / 4% Cabernet Franc / 1% Petit Verdot. Massive ripe nose of cassis, lead pencil shavings, blackberries, tart red cherries, raspberries, and a slight note of tar. The lead pencil shavings follow through to dominate the nose, along with red cherries, raspberries, and a small amount of both cranberries and asphalt. A moderate amount of smooth tannins come forward, along with lots of sharp acidity. Long finish, ending on notes of lead pencil and black currants. Overall a great effort for the '07 vintage, showing good balance and shying away from the over extraction that a lot of the other wines seem to display. Needs at least 5+ years. Good+

Bordeaux Region - Tasted at Chateau: Tasted at Chateau Pontet-Canet. Beautiful bouquet of dark fruits, terroir, spices that just kept coming. Concentrated dark fruits, cassis, earth and spices filled the palate. Lingering finish. Young, and slightly tight, but drinking very well. 2007 was a wet year and made for young drinking wines. This should improve though with another year or two and drink well for many more. (Doris enjoyed this wine)

I wonder, can there be bottle variance with a great Bordeaux of this age? In the bouquet all the luxurious elements were present, like cassis, graphite and beautifully toasted oak, but on the palate the wine seemed to be unripe, with green bell peppers and a firm amount of acidity and tannin. A (very) good wine alright, but not of the standard I expected. My blind score was 89.

Although initially a little closed, this opened up after a couple of hours to reveal a moderately complex profile of cassis, graphite, licorice and some dried herbs. Moderate tannins are slightly powdery but round, silky and approachable; quite well camouflaged beneath the fruit. Nice balance. Concentrated and deep for the vintage. Can be enjoyed now after a decent decant, but probably best after 2017.

Dark red, but not massive in color. A lot of clean, dark Pauillac-fruit (blackberries). Since I know it is biodynamically farmed: Is the distinct fruit a result of this? After tasting the overly oaked Smith Haut-Lafite it was a relief to taste this one.

On an evening vertical of 2000, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07 & 08, the 2007 was most approachable of the group. The 2005 was the star. However, the 2007 was drinking above my expectation. Still needs several more years to show its best.

Tried at Glengarrys Bordeaux tasting. $220 retai (NZ)l. Lovely nose, lighter style and palate than say the Gazin, but warm, more balanced, nice long finish with balanced tannins, silky and light with lots of length, almost Margaux like.

Chateau Pontet Canet produced a stunning achievement for this difficult Bordeaux vintage. Its spicy cassis, black fruit, oak, earth and tobacco aromatics were a pleasure to smell. Full bodied and filled with ripe cassis and round tannins , the wine ends with a soft, clean finish. This is a better wine than Tesseron produced at Pontet Canet in 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 00, 01 & 02.

We ordered the wine at Restaurant The Steakhouse in Lachen. Directly from the cellar the wine was a little closed and pretty dry, but it opened up rather quickly and really came into its own after about one hour in the decanter. The wine offered black currant, dark fruits, graphite and (with more air) liquorice on the nose. On the palate the wine showed intense black currant, dark fruits, minerals and liquorice, with slightly dry but velvety tannins, and a nice acidic kick on the exceptionally long finish.
Compared to the 2004 Pontet-Canet and several 2007 Bordeaux I had the last weeks I found that the 2007 Pontet-Canet did not have the intensity, purity and focus of the phenomenal 2004 Pontet-Canet, but is nevertheless very good for the 2007 vintage and without any doubt one of the wines of the vintage.

The nose shows is lovely, with rich cassis aromas, followed by pencil lead, subtle earth, and blackberry. The palate shows sweet, well integrated tannins, velvety mouthfeel, bright fruits with good acid and a beautiful intense finish. I was really impressed by this 2007 effort. 2007 Bordeaux: Always a favorite of mine, if this were priced under $50, I would be a buyer. Sadly its been a few vintages since that point I think. Purple in color, shimmering bright. K&L Wines - 2007 Bordeaux Tasting (Hollywood, CA): Even with the 3 hour decant, this was still not giving up much. Muted nose of eucalyptus, pine cones, and just a hair of black currant. Distinctly Cabernet to my palate. Rich black fruit up front and then it just kind of dies with only hints of earth and coffee on the finish. Of all the 07's tasted today, this had the most forward and drying tannins.
Came back about 30-45 minutes later for a second taste and this had gained some depth and opened quite a bit more. Finally the pencil lead and graphite flavors I love from Pauillac began to come through. If you pop it young give it a good looooong decant. Otherwise hide these away for a minimum 5 years. This is also one the only 07's tasted that I feel has any real age worthiness.

Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux 2007 Tasting (The Annex - Hollywood & Highland): This is a 2007? Wow what a gorgeous fruit driven nose with aromas of currant, licorice, muddled boysenberries, baking spices, clay, and flowers. Just superb on the palate as well with full fruit flavors, firm but receptive tannins, and soft balancing acidity. This has a lot to like: elegant balance, a soft lacy texture, and complex notes of currant, earth, and stones. An amazing wine for the vintage and easily the best red of the tasting in my opinion. The only wine that comes across as truly great in a sea of average reds.

Grands Crus de Bordeaux - 2007 Vintage Tasting (Los Angeles, California): Pauillac is just not my thing in 2007. In other vintage it is my favorite region in the world. This wine was a let down. A redeeming wine for the vintage. Forward and expressive aromas. Medium bodied, nicely balanced on the finish. It will find some appreciative cellars and collectors for this difficult vintage. Pauillacs in general did better in 2007 than many of the other Bordeaux AOC's. But really we're marking time here. The 2008 will make that abundantly clear.

UGC 2007 Bordeaux (The Drake, Chicago IL): nose: tight and has a fairly powerful nose as well with tones of dark red cherries, cedar, pencil lead, black currants and spice box tones. Dense and complex, but just wound up tight right now
taste: backwards and powerful full bodied feel with rich tannins and tones of dark red cherries, cedar, spice box, tobacco, and black currants. This is a bruiser on the palate right now and has some real body to it
overall: extremely young and backwards. There is something real good underneath, but its gonna take a bit to come out. A lot of power on this wine that stands in contrast of the vintage

The most full bodied and concentrated 2007 I have tasted up to now. Cassis and glue in the bouquet, but this acetone impression will almost certainly disappear with ageing. A lot of cassis in the taste as well. Some pleasant sweetness. Firm tannin and good hidden oak. A very good definitely Pauillac wine. Needs at least 7 - 10 years to open up and will keep at least 15+ years. For now probably 90, but you cannot overlook the future in this wine, so I score it 92 and it might even score higher when it all gets more integrated and the luxury shows even more.

This a plush, young wine still on its ascent. Clear, medium ruby.
Nose is primary and the oak will take time to harmonize. Notes of ripe and stewed black fruit, cedar, cinnamon hearts, worn leather and earth.
Palate if full and young, balanced and powerful, with chalky tannins and robust acid.
Flavours of red fruit, cinnamon hearts and pipe tobacco. Excellent length.
Years of life ahead and clearly will be better in time. Drink from 2027.

Had with beef barbecue ribs, paired very well. With the grill going and all the work of feeding a half dozen humans, didn't take notes, but it was a classic Pouillac, still showing some youth and power, but very ready to drink.

A bit too much oak and a touch of heat on the finish are the weak points. Medium finish. A solid effort for this sub-par vintage.

PnP - consumed over 2 hours

MASTER AIS BORDEAUX; 10/22/2014-11/30/2014 (HOTEL WESTIN PALACE MILANO): Degustato alla cieca.
70% Cabernet Sauvignon-25% Merlot-4% Cabernet Franc-1% Petit Verdot.
60% Legno nuovo.
Frutta di bosco sotto spirito, liquore all' uvetta.

Decanted for 4 hours. This was a very nice wine, especially for the vintage. Clearly lacks the complexity and length of the other recent vintages of PC....but I would buy more if I could find under $60.

Bordeaux Trip, 4 days, 1st and 2nd Growths; 6/14/2011-6/17/2011 (Bordeaux): Very dark purple red. Pontet Canet is doing everything right. 93+ to 94pts.

Good concentration for a 2007 with deep brooding fruit on the nose; Very smooth with fine tannins. A very good 2007 Pauillac.

Bibendum Bordeaux 2010 tasting including selected back vintages (Lords Cricket Ground - St Johns Wood, London): Interesting nose, spring day after rain. Again approachable, and enjoyable if you like this style. Not a rich, full blown style, doesnt have legs for the future, BUT if wine is all about pleasure, and if you cant wait for the 2005, 06, 09s then try this vintage. Nice complexity and a good intro into the style.

New world nose of vanilla and oak. Thin and a bit green on the palate. My score is for day two, as it showed better with some of the oak blowing off and a bit more fruit lurking beneath the tannins.

Very dark. Perfume and cassis on the nose. Very good, despite somewhat low expectations. Slightly green. Elegant and good though.

Very compact wine, especially considering the vintage. A lot of good cassis. See also my previous note. One difference from then; no acetone impressions now. Wait until 2017+ Score: 91++

K&L Top Bordeaux Tasting (San Francisco, CA): Completely different from the other 07 bordeaux at the tasting. Vanilla, spice. Palate has huge flavor and is more creamy/smooth than the others. Medium weight, balanced acidity. Very nice, and would be killer if it was $10-15 cheaper instead of at $60. 91-92+

Medium bodied quite backward and lean taste with roasted oak, coffe, an earty mineraly character and soft tannins. Cassis and cassis leafs. Puts on more wheight and suppleness when tasted the day after. Blue rasins, plum jelly, chocolate and almond/marsipan. 90- 91 P

2007 Bordeaux: Always a favorite of mine, if this were priced under $50, I would be a buyer. Sadly its been a few vintages since that point I think. Purple in color, shimmering bright. The nose has attic dust and cassis. Silky texture. Cassis and some earthiness on the palate. Complex with lots of tannins.

Pretty nose, nice, approachable and balanced. Currant and slight dark licorice. Full bodied with velvety tannins and a caressing finish. Wonderfully rounded with great depth and balance. Nice flavor of red berry shining through the dense mouthfeel. Very nice!

It feels watered down, low concentration, little fruit, light body, sharp tannins and green finish. Not recommended at all even at the lower price this year.

Tasted at the château. THIS is a 2007? Jean Michel Comme made a great 2007. His extensive work in the vineyards payed of. Great nose with iron, berry, cherry, tobacco and yoghurt. Drinking good now, superb balance, ripe tannins, loads of fruit and a solid acidity supporting the thing. Long finish! 92/100
