Same bottle as Nutty08. This was delightful. A little volatility right when opened but the nose was aromatic and on display over several hours in the decanter. This showed a little lighter in body next to the 90 Montrose. It was also more charming and red fruited, with light coffee and tertiary notes. Acidity was high. Fully resolved in terms of tannic structure. Clearly a wine at its apex.

Delightful mature bdx. Shows a hint of barnyard upon opening. Otherwise mature tertiary cedar fruit with hint of eucalyptus. Quite vibrant and full in the mouth--but lacking the density and complexity of the '90 Montrose. Lengthy finish with a little leather and tobacco notes, along with smoke and cedar. Have to think this at peak as the tannins are nearly resolved. Not going off a cliff anytime soon though.

Tasted blind next to the 1990 Cos. Superb, peaking now. Unmistakable nose of cigar box and herbs, with a note of blackcurrant. Structured but velvety with really nice acidity. WOTN.

Wow this was as good as it gets. The most rounded and fat Calon Segur I remember. Black fruit, cedar, fine tannins. Everything you’d expect in a left bank wine from a great vintage. Drank next to its 1989 sibling, which was also excellent but a tad less rewarding.

Soft and silky. Plenty of ripe red fruit and compote in this wine. A wine for royalty. Feels like it’s at the glorious peak before retreating. Drink now.

Some odd notes here. I have a few pristine cases - all in perfect condition. Fully mature and no need to wait but also not in decline. Not as dense as Montrose and others in 90, but this has much more elegance. Lovely red berry mouthfeel with dried flower, tobacco and graphite on the nose. Lots of tertiary notes and it looks aged. So feminine. Always a treat to open (pop and pour, no need to decant) and very highly recommended - frankly at the current market price, good bottles are a bargain. Note that non-pristine bottles have a slight initial funk that blows off quickly

A bit fragile and we would suggest avoiding long decant. Soft and well evolved, it has the austerity more akin to a Paullac . Nice leather and herb edge mineral and very pretty . Lacks a bit of depth of flavour and energy but a very pretty wine nonetheless. 91

During a blind tasting dinner. Fantastic nose here with cherry, funky farmyard, forest floor. Fully tertiary in character and typical from aged Bordeaux of high quality. Elegant, long finish. This was very popular at the table and shows that Calon Segur has terrific terroir if they pull it together. Looks like they did in the warm 1990 vintage which suits St.Estephe.

Bordeaux 1990 horizontal tasting (Fribourg): 1990 Bordeaux horizontal hosted by a private collector. 30 years down the road, the vintage comes across as bold and muscular, youthful and in general not yet open for business or at times closed. Highlights included Figeac, Haut-Brion, Mouton, Calon Ségur – and to my surprise – Marquis de Terme. See tasting story for more take-aways and the complete line-up.
Tasting note Detailed and delicate nose of dried herbs, a bit of tobacco, espresso, ripe almost jammy fruit. The refined texture imposes lots of character and personality carrying great depth and concentration. By far not ready yet, but one of the strongest presentation in the line-up and beating younger top vintages such as 2009, 2010 and 2016 (not the stellar 2018, however).

When PnP, it has intense flavours of cassis, dried roses, earthiness, barnyard, plum, black fruits. With plenty of air, it reveals more of tertiary flavours, dried roses, mint and green pepper. The tannins are quite assertive and not quite resolved. Very persistent and slightly sweet finish. It needs at least 3 hours of aeration in a large decanter (or a Zalto Burgundy glass). In in early part of its prime drinking window now, but has years to go.

Fine Wines SG - Grand Cru Discovery Pack (Delivered to Home): Medium ruby core, with orange and fading edges. Pronounced aromas of violets, paprika, grass, and cloves. Tannins softened, and intense flavours, of pepper, grass, red cherry, redcurrant, paprika, grass, cloves, tar, coffee. Lots of sweet berry juice of the finish, that lasted very long. Great!

Garnet with amber/brownish tinges. Fully developed with pronounced intensity of dried roses, rust, copper, tobacco, dried leaves, forest and banyard. On the palate it is soft silky and body is medium. Flavour intensity is med (+) and palate has cherriess, tomato leaf, tobacco, herbs. Wine is fully matured and drink now.

Dark garnet colored, medium full bodied, nicely balanced, elegant and refined, Jancis Robinson speaks of its "very attractive voluptuousness.. .and beautifully balanced". Aromas and bright taste profile of floral and violets, the layer of black fruits accented by the floral and tones of mushroom, spice, licorice, earth and leather and soft, velvety tannins.
2nd try: Old textbook funk on the nose. Black fruits, mint leaves, peppers, mushrooms tertiaries. Slight blood iron on the finish. It’s almost 30 years old but drinks younger. This is still in its drinking window but open earlier than later. Good stuff.

Pnp on Father’s day. Nose of leather, wet forest floor and nice red fruits. This wine was cloudy (unfiltered?). On the palate there is such a punch, I would have never estimated it 29 years old. This full bodied wine is so beautiful with its smooth tannins, alive acidity and multi layered components of red fruits, liquorice, cedar and dried plums. The finish is about 30-50 seconds long. Great wine to look out for.

Cassis, wet forest floor, mushroom bouquet. Tasted blackcurrants, spices, tinge of bitter grape skin, gravel, herbs, with earthy tertiaries. There are still slight tannins which helped to bring out the flavours and minerality. Mint leaf and white pepper finish but not long. Enjoyed it. Open now.

We drank a comparison vertical of the 1989 and 1990 Calon Segur. The '90 was clearly the better of the two wines. The 1989 was beautiful in color - no loss of clarity or the beautiful dark red of a claret. The nose was outstanding. first taste after uncorking the 1989 was of the terroir. I decanted toe 1989 and 1990 for about 2 hrs and it did not lose any body or flavor. The 1990 was deeper in color than the 1989 and had more tannin left and body. A beautiful bottle - we drank it after the 1989. Clearly the better of the two.

Needs 1 hour airtime at least, black fruit, leather, cedar, tobacco all wrapped up in a smooth package, tannins are mostly integrated, long smoke and tobacco finish. Drinking well now and we don't think it will continue to improve.

We really enjoyed this wine tonight. The cork was in great shape, removed completely intact. Dark ruby in color, the wine offered up plum, dark fruit, shoe leather, licorice, earth, and cedar, it really came into its own at the 3-hour mark. Fantastic balance, luscious, savory, with an old world feel to it.

11th of 12. I am afraid that I am unable to write a proper tasting note in this case. This bottle has just been drunk on a warm, early summer's day in the garden with a barbecued steak and was just lovely. A classic mature Bordeaux, not a wow wine but exhibiting all the characteristics expected at this level. Unlike the last bottle this was perfectly balanced. 4/5

A private tasting (Restaurant De Ertepeller, Papendrecht. NL): Tasted blind. Very mature and bricky colour; deep and warm nose, quite oxidative, rich and honeyed, cigar, lovage, fresher palate than the nose would suggest, liquorice, seductive, very good length.

A wine of birth year. Exceptional performance. Perfumes of red and black fruits, leather, fur, spice and earth. Still fresh and vivid containing many red fruits in the mouth with no boring, tiring or disturbing elements in the elegant acidity at all. Considerable finish. Extraordinary value.
Wines from the HDH Auction (Tru, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose is wide open and elegant with christmas fruitcake, leather, cedar, cranberries, red cherries, and cigar wrapper notes. There is excellent balance and depth with a refinement that only comes from this kind of aging.
Taste: Medium bodied with medium tannins and medium acidity. The structure is resolved and refined with christmas fruitcake, leather, cranberries, red cherries, balsamico, and cigar wrapper tones.
Overall: This is everything I love about aged Bordeaux. There is poise and class to this with excellent depth.

While not at the level of its 2 rivals in the appellation, this is showing its stuff today. The spicy, earthy, tapenade, leaf, tobacco, cedar, blackberry and cassis nose is the better half here. There is a bright freshness to the dark red fruits, and the continued softening of its stern side that is settling in making this quite nice to drink today.

10th of 12. As other reviews have said this is a classic mature claret beautiful on the nose but for me the acidity was too high making it very unbalanced. Other bottles have been lovely so hoping this is a one off. 3/5

Decanted for 2 hrs. Classic claret with sous bois, tobacco, leather, and graphite on the nose. Palate had more power than the 89 I had two weeks ago. The blue and red fruit were expressed beautifully. Not tremendously complex but very delicious now. I think the wine has just entered its peak window. It could age for another 10 years as its acidity is high. 92+

Some signs of age towards to rim, lovely garnet. Cedary nose, tobacco, mineral notes, leather - quite evolved. Good acidity, nice grip with sweet fruit. Lots of character, tension - not too polished at all. Superb finish with great length and subtle persistence. The finish is the highlight really! Drinking nicely, no rush but probably at its peak. 93-94

Stored in cold cellar since release. Decided to try 1990 with one PArker did not rate, Drank over 2 days - years of life left 2020+. Old fashioned St Estephe lovely full flavoured balanced fruit oak and leather. But true to form lacks elegance and finesse but is that a problem? One did not buy St Estephe for that. How accurate the 1855 still is! Will i live long enough to enjoy the decade od 2000? Or will something have been lost

Decanted for about 1h but took more like 2h to fully open up. Soaked cork / wet on the top but comes out in one piece- after a pretty bad 88 again not the best experience with cork quality of Calon Segur. Beautiful smell of sous bois however immediately after pulling the cork. Garnet with slight bricking at the rim. Initially barnyard, then earth, dark fruit, a fair bit of cedar, leather and tobacco, spices and a touch of chocolate. Almost fully integrated tannins. Nice medium plus finish. An excellent mature Bdx even though not my very favourite style (too much cedar and spices for me). 92-93

Bordeaux 1990 (semi blind) (Amsterdam Wijn Antiquariaat): Very fine, mature, CLASSIC Bordeaux - great bottle. Fresh cherries, stone, IRON and more secondary tones in the nose. Medium to full-bodied palate with fresh dark fruits, leather, minerals, good acidity and soft tannins, long lingering on. VERY elegant and excellent delineation. No hurry to drink. Why is Calon Segur so often underestimated?

„One Wine - Three Vintages“-Blind Tasting. Flight 8: Château Calon-Ségur. We tasted 1990, 2000 and 2010. The 1990 had aged very well and offered a mature nose with animally and medicinal notes. It was balanced and might even continue to improve for another three to five years. The 2000 offered a balanced palate, but was closed and seemed to be in a dumb phase. I would revisit it in five years. The 2010 was my favourite wine of the flight. Despite its youth and the youthful presence of oak the 2010 was balanced, creamy and super sexy! A great wine with great potential. In summary, I would drink the 1990 now and over the next five to ten years, would put the 2000 away and retry it in five years, and would try to get my hands on a twelve-case of the sexy 2010 for drinking mid- and long-term.

I was disappointed by the last bottle of Calon. This one is much more fulfilling. Surprisingly youthful color of brick red that goes nearly to the rim. Shows the concentration in the center with a nearly opaque color and brilliant highlights. Slow and pronounced legs, a well-made wine. Beautiful, simply beautiful. Powerful and complex nose of leather, smokey meat, cedar and a bit of red fruit, mostly bouquet at this point and very pleasing at that. What I most like about aged Bordeaux (must be the cab that ages so nicely). Medium to light weight, plenty of currant fruit, soft tannins and a surprisingly high acidity. A bit of drying out on the finish that is medium to short in length but nicely balanced. I like the structure of Bordeaux and this aged wine still has lots of intriguing flavors and smells to it. Final note-has all of the meaty cab characteristic of St. Estephe, more about power and pronounced flavor than elegance and refinement. A lingering taste of gun metal on the finish. Adds more complexity

Pleasant wine that is in a nice place. There’s a little cassis, some graphite, cedar, leather and smoked meats. It has some bretty funk that adds a slight metallic edge to the palate. It is mid weight and I would have liked a bit more tannic grip to cut through the rib eye I consumed with it.

This passed through the hot summer of 03 in a warm cellar in France and it shows a little. Looks a browning fully mature colour, interesting nose of earth, animal fur and rusty nails. Ferrous flavour too but with complex earth, game and black tea. Better kept bottles should be less mature than this but this showed lovely mature complexity and I'm glad I drank it now rather than later.

Mature Bordeaux Indulgence @ my place (Netherlands): Charming and seducing bouquet of fresh and crunchy red fruit like cherries and pomegranate. But there are also lots of mature characteristics like earl grey tea, earth, potpourri, clay, paper and ink. Super freshness, lovely tannines, bright and also powerful. Very entertaining and interesting wines which tells a different story every 5 minutes. I feel that, from this flight, I'll still remember this particular wine in 5 years time, because of its surprising freshness and its dual character. 18-18.5/20

Wonderful older Calon-Segur. Still rather youthful - could easily last another decade. Tannins firm, but softening. Wonderful nose full of earth, minerals and tobacco. Full-bodied, but beautifully balanced, with nice cassis flavors overlaid with more tobacco, lead pencil, spices and earth. A strong minerality came through on the finish. A nice St. Estephe.

Some developed coloring, but still dark. Bricking in the edges.
Smell of pencil, some woody spice, maybe a hint of sweet tobacco and some fruit in the background. Taste is concentrated, dry, bit pointy and the developed characters way override the little bit of fruit I could find in this wine. The finish is long, dry, leaving trace of pencil and wood.
I suspect this bottle was decanted for to long or in some other way was not optimal. It seemed to have rid itself of the fruit that would have tied this up to be a very good wine. I did not find that it developed much in the glass either.

Wonderfully expressive and complex nose of fresh and vibrant red berries, moving on to black berries, cigar box, liquorice and other teriary aromas. Almost no need to taste the wine with a nose like this. The palate was fresh fruit up front with a wonderful balance between the acidity, tannins and fruit. Smooth and so drinkable. The finish was long, marked by chocolate flavours and a slight bitterness at the end. No wonder I love mature Bordeaux.

Nose of ripe olives, with a little fecal, earth, and petunia. Flavors of ripe plum, olives, cedar, and tobacco well integrated with the wood, Show full fruit and nose immediately when opened. Misc Bordeaux 1990 tasting - Martin: A strange nose with sea water, blood and black currant but also some milk chocolate. Also some sherry and quince. A very smooth palate with mostly black currant leaves. Quite an elegant wine with an okay acidity but a short aftertaste. Ends quite dry. Definitely a mature wine also showing smokey meat and dirt. Not bad but the short aftertaste draws it down.

Bordeaux 1990 - 20 years later (Martins office): Dark red center with a browning hue. Sweet, crushed berries, blackcurrant and plums, shoe polish and sweet tobacco on the decadent nose. Similar stilled taste with greasy blackcurrant and plum leading into the shoe polish, sweet tobacco and leather on the midpalate and finish. Soft around the edges and ready to drink.

A beautiful wine that surprised me since the cork had leaked a bit and the old wine had accumulated in the capsule. The leakage was of no consequence and we enjoyed the wine over two days. Have no fear about this beauty if you have it in your cellar. Based on our experience, this wine has a lot to give. This was our first bottle of Calon-Segur and it did not disappoint us. The wine was complex, fruity, possessed lovely mouth feel, and had typical Bordeaux understatement.

Excellent condition given that the previous bottle tried a year previous was a bit musty. Vivid claret robe to the edge with no hint of browning. A lovely classic nose of cedar, graphite and tobacco. Supple and smooth on the palate. Mouthfilling yet light. Suprisingly classic in style with muted fruit considering the reputation of the vintage. No overripe notes of plum or raisin. Typical secondary notes of herbs and minerality with plenty of backbone remaining. This has thrown a heavy sediment but still has some tannin in reserve. Nicely balanced and silky. Will last but I'm not sure the fruit will return unless it emeges from a second dumb phase.

A very pretty claret. While it was fairly funky at the start, the sweaty aromas dissipated with time revealing a quite nuanced and evolving nose of sweet cherries, flowers, herbs and cedar. A soft wine with ripe, concentrated fruit (cassis, leather, tobacco); thoroughly mellow without being tired. The finish was plenty long. A delightfully complex, delicious wine.

A fairly musty cork is a bad sign. However, the wine smells unaffected. Nice mature St. Estephe with plenty of primary fruit and subtle secondary nuances. Maybe a hint of funk or oxidation adds a bit of complexity. Smooth, soft and supple. Cool fruit and nicely balanced. A lovely Bordeaux that may have lost just a touch of length due to the cork. It continued to show a bit more oxidation with time in the glass. Probably began to fade and close rather that open up. Still nice and ready to drink now.

Fantastic! Simply one of the best Calon's I've had. A hint of stable on the nose blows off quickly to reveal Asian spices (tea bag), smoke, coffee and leather. Surprisingly mature color, with quite a bit of lightening at the rim. Fully mature on the nose and palate as well, with cassis, lead pencil, and coffee. Nice body and length. This seemed to fill out with a little time in the decanter. It was paired with a bottle of '90 Pape-Clement, and at first I definitely preferred the P-C, but the Calon-Segur grew on me, and seemed to develop a little more complexity than the still youthful Pape-Clement.

Tasting note
Detailed and delicate nose of dried herbs, a bit of tobacco, espresso, ripe almost jammy fruit.

This bottle has just been drunk on a warm, early summer's day in the garden with a barbecued steak and was just lovely. A classic mature Bordeaux, not a wow wine but exhibiting all the characteristics expected at this level. Unlike the last bottle this was perfectly balanced. 4/5

KSC02 does Dallas, Part 2 (Daniele Osteria, Dallas, TX): WIML91. Purple color in the glass, slightly opaque. Hint of barnyard up front with some notes of coffee and roasted plums. Flavors of black licorice, plums and cherries. Medium to vibrant acidity, firm tannins, medium to full body. Can be drank now with some time in the decanter but probably should be held a little longer.

Tasted at lunch and finished the day after at dinner with similar notes.A deep ruby colour, no ageing sign, very complex nose, black cherry, bitter cherry, black pepper, saddle, and leather.Good balance, pleasant acidity, round, ripe tannins but considering the producer and the great vintage it lacks power and persistance.
Ready now, but can be cellared for some years more.A decent wine but not a blockbuster!!!

Very sweet, not quite balanced, my husband said: "plump and sweet" a good summary. 89P

Wow! Colour fading to orange rim; enormous cedar and curry(!) spice box nose; huge plump sweet body. Rather short on palate and finish- but what a wonderful wine! 92P and a bargain for 44 Euros on Ebay!

Fantastic! Simply one of the best Calon's I've had. A hint of stable on the nose blows off quickly to reveal Asian spices (tea bag), smoke, coffee and leather. The palate is dusty, showing black cherries, coffee and tobacco. The finish is extremely long and evolving - coca cola, smoke, bacon, leather... This is drinking superbly now but will last many many more years.

A classy look to this wine, a bit of age showing.
A lovely vegetal bouquet, complex and fruity.
Luscious fruity attack, dry, brilliant balance, very complex.

The 3 Tenors of Saint Estephe (Calon, Cos & Montrose): 1982, 1990, 1995, 1996 & 2000 (New York City, NY): Wine No. 2 (1990 Calon Segur)
Medium ruby with substantial amber, this was the lightest colored wine of the flight. Beautiful but evolved nose of cedar and some mintiness. Medium body I correctly picked the Calon. Better nose than palate. 88 points . This wine got zero 1st place votes.

An Evening With Roy Hersh and Justin Wells (Roy's Place): Intense, very pleasant vegetal nose of fresh herbs and tea leaves. Secondary aromas of cedar, pencil and a slight whiff of horse stable. Wonderfully complex on the palate. Nice long finish. Mmmmmm...

Dinner with Philippe in Munich. Maturing and developing (March '01), with bricking along edges. Herbal and lotsa beefy mushroomy notes. Seemed a bit overly developed, and storage was iffy.

CT Group does Bordeaux vs Cal Cabs @ Jeff S: Light red in color with a garnet rim. Sweet floral nose with some dusty earth hints. Some mature fruit flavors. Ready to go mature Bordeaux. Kept going back to the nice nose...
