Dark colour, little browning at the edge. Solid fruit and some cigar box evident. Medium-full palate with reasonable complexity, still good acid (which receded over a couple of hours) and enough tannin to hold the structure. Good length - overall an enjoyable drink.

One of the best 2002s I’ve had from Bordeaux. Still has lively structure, almost youthful for its age, and is the most interesting i’ve had of this wine from that vintage and also the most interesting of that vintage from Bordeaux I’ve had. In general, I’ve found plenty of 2002s just a little boring, but this is a step above that. 3 (out of 5), a good representation for what it is, enjoyable but not enough to make me think of backfilling.

Significantly improved since my last tasting in 2015. Beautiful nose right after opening and gains weight with time. Maybe a bit short but in perfect shape with no sign of oxidation whatsoever

Wow. Served blind. This certainly is one of the lushest and richest 2002s I ever tasted. No green streak or whatsoever, only a perfect pinch of rusticity. Dark fruit, mossy forestfloor, sandalwood and spice. Beautiful.

Left Bank Bordeaux and some Aussies: Opulent blackcurrant and graphite nose. On opening, acid sticks out on entry and dominates through the palate. With air, the acid integrates better and the fruit rounds out, balancing. A good Pauillac, however give this one plenty of air.

2002 Bordeaux 20 years on tasting (Fribourg): 2002 Bordeaux 20 years on tasting. Key takeaways: 1/ 31 out of 32 wines were in flawless condition which indicates either luck or less bottle variation in the vintage, 2/ On average still early days with the fruit predominantly primary, 3/ solid hedonistic quality with only few laggards, but also no blow-outs, 4/ structures built on both tannin and acidity, but common mid-palate weakness, 5/ best wines were Valandrau, Palmer and a surprise underdog Lagrange (all 95), 6/ biggest disappointment was a cooked Figeac (87). More comments and full list of wines included in the tasting story.
Tasting note: Lots of herbal features such as menthol, a pretty ripe, darkish cherry fruit and sweet notes of raw vanilla beans. So far so good. A fresh, fruit palate showing more red type of berries. Still good so far. Unfortunately the palate was significantly skewed towards acidity leaving a complete lack of balance.

2002 Claret Horizontal (Piccolino, Exchange Square): Another belter. This feels more youthful than some on the nose although the tannins are very fine. Nose has a blend of blueberry cream, some leafy greenness and some bresaola. Palate similarly cool fruited and has lovely length. Suspect will hold / improve over the next decade. My second favourite wine of the night.

Deep ruby. Blackcurrant and graphite, just starting to lighten to some redcurrant top notes. Still not the most poised and focused of finishes but it it starting to come in to focus. Good wine, very good even, and representative of its vintage. Pretty consistent with a previous bottle a couple of years ago. ****

Very much enjoyed this bottle. On the nose: graphite, plum, dried fruit, earth and spices. On the palette: black cherry, blackberry, silky smooth and mouth coating. Acidity provides nice balance.

When I wrote my initial notes on this wine 2 years ago I found it excellent, but a little young. 2 years on it has really developed. Dark red color. Cassis and smoke aromatics. Soft and mature wine, rich texture, supple, and complex. Decanted 2 hours before serving.

En-Primeur campaign for the 2021 vintage; 4/25/2022-4/29/2022 (Bordeaux): From magnum Aged black fruits are slightly dried out, sweet spice, still polished despite vintage; primary but balanced. Juicy, fleshy, savoury, tight tannins, very slightly sour dark fruits with a touch of red currant and alcohol warmth. Okay

Nose of dark red fruits and spice that is immediately recognizable as Bordeaux (I was blinded on this and called it immediately). The palate shows gravel, blackberries, currants and sour cherries with cedar notes. Medium acidity and tannins are beginning to integrate into the wine. Nicely concentrated. Very good now, should drink well through 2037.

Le vin était excellent avec du potentiel de vieillissement. Il s'est encore amélioré par rapport à celle bue, il y a 3 ans. Pas de compte rendu plus approfondi, car bûe pendant un repas de fête.

Around two years from the last bottle and this is showing remarkably consistently. Slight green notes on the nose, but also earthy blackcurrant and berry fruit, enticing and slightly sweet. On the palate, juicy and delicious with medium tannins, juicy acidity, dry, but sweet fruit, more berry, dark cherry and currant. Really delicious, but green note on nose, distracts a little.

Very nicely aged left bank Bordeaux. This wine still has length left in the bottle despite 20 years. Beautiful deep dark red color with a hint of brown from ageing. Nose is complex with chocolate, leather, minimal earth tones, and minimal oak. Mouthfeel is full and smooth, coating the tongue. Palate reveals moderately fine tannins admixed with dark berries, more leather, a touch of acidity, and hints of oak. Long finish, a lovely wine. This Bordeaux was paired with lovely short ribs served with heavy gravy, a perfect combination.

Last two bottles of case of 6 bought in 2005 for around €25 per bottle - what a bargain! Fully developed but no decline either. The fruit and acid/tannin structure remain in balance, and the concentration and complexity are pronounced. Outstanding wine, despite the supposedly average vintage. Drink now or hold for the next five years.
Clear and medium garnet in colour. Pronounced nose - cooked and dried dark fruit - blackcurrant, plum, prune, oak - cedar, clove, tertiary - earth, leather, cigar box. Fully developed. Dry palate, high acidity, high fine tannins, med alcohol, medium body, med+ intensity flavours of blackcurrant, prune, earth, smoke, spice, a little green blackcurrant leaf. Long finish.

I did not have high expectations for this vintage yet it was a nice surprise; some structure balanced with dark fruit and earth. It was part of the flight with a 2010 which is tough to beat.

Joli maintenant.

I’m going to agree with the pleasantly surprised notes immediately below mine. This was poised and supple, with healthy pencil graphite as well as sweet blackberry. Really a nice wine, the acid/tannin balance was perfect. even my husband who “hates Bordeaux” enjoyed it. Amazingly it lasted almost 4 nights open in the fridge, too. I have high hopes for my second bottle (recently removed from cold storage, so on deck for soon this NC summer). A smart purchase years ago for $40.

In a nice phase, and with typical Pauillac characteristics. A nice effort but not spectacular. With potential to develop nicely over the next 10 years.

Well this was supposed to be mediocre at best, given the prevailing wisdom about the 2002 vintage, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Clean nose with red fruit and some pencil shaving, clear colour no real signs of any bottle age. Fruit forward palate with nice tannins, all hanging together nicely and overall comes across as a very well made claret. I’m sure not as good as as the stellar vintages but then this is a much cheaper bottle. Checking my notes I paid £30 a few years back and at that price I’m very happy. Drink or hold.

Dunkle Farbe. Zudem richtiges Glas verwenden (Nase). Grosses Kino, dass man sich verdienen muss.

Bought this bottle at the chateau in 2010. 1a cork. No decant this time but opened the bottle one hour before drinking. Perfectly aged Pauillac with notes of cigar, leather and earthy aromas accompanied by dark red fruits like plum, blackcurrant and blackberrys. High but now well integrated tannins. Drink up.

Dark ruby color. Smoke, mineral, and dark fruit bouquet. For the vintage, concentrated rich texture. Moderately tannic finish, with some acid. Everything is good here except for the fruit on the palate. It’s there, but not very expressive. Tastes a little bit young, though drinkable now. Has at least 4-5 years of additional potential. I let this breathe for 1 hr. And 45 minutes before tasting.

Fine Wines SG - Grand Cru Discovery Pack (Delivered to Home): Deep purple. Aromas of cassis and fresh cut grass, then a slight bit of paprika spice. Still some power from the tannins and fresh acids, with flavours of medium ripe black cherry and cassis, and grass, greyish minerals, cloves and tar. Mineral, floral finish, which gets very persistent. Nice!

I purchased two bottles for my 2019 Pontet-Canet / Clos des Réas tasting - this is the other one. Slender and cool Pauillac, fresh but light structure with mostly resolved tannins, mature flavour profile, quite gravelly with little fruit left, hints of spice and cedar and some nutty development, dried fruit finish, good length. Drink up if you have any left.

Dark and quite deep ruby. Dense blackcurrant and blackcurrant leaf. Graphite too. A real density here, surprisingly viscous in the mouth. Just a sense of a slight lack of focus / bluriness nodding towards the vintage. With that slight lack of focus there’s also a lack of precission and energy leading to a foresquare mid palate to finish, but nonetheless this is very good for the vintage and very decent in absolute terms. ****
Dark and not showing much bricking on the rim. Intense on the nose. Slightly green, blackcurrant and dark cherry fruit, nice hints of cedar and oak, with a tinge of earth. Palate is medium to full bodied with fresh acidity and medium drying tannins. Fruit is both red and blackcurrant with strong acidity and tannins on the long finish. Delicious.

level mid-neck, still youthful colour with purple tinge, nose very fruity, some complexity but still young without much in the way of tertiary character, very good though, palate well balanced and intense but not all the rough edges yet integrated, a very good wine, especially for the vintage, with real upside potential but for my tastes it needs more time, from the intensity, concentration and balance the next bottle could be in 5 years and then I would not be surprised if it will have aged only incrementally, not to say that it is not very enjoyable now but there is still real potential and I see no risk in waiting.

From 75cl, perfect cork, decanted 1 hour (it should have been either P+P or at perhaps 3 hours). Yes, there is some fine blackcurrant action on the nose, pointing to the Left Bank, and, undoubtedly, to Pauillac. The wild, rough, untamed, rodeo-bucking on the entry makes one expect a massive mid-palate and an imposing finish, but it kind of falls apart, leaving a huge tannic carapace (as I remember Bordeaux tasting at a similar age back in the 1980s, in fact) and my tongue feeling like raw leather. This is so unlike any of the currently excellent 2002 Médoc I know and love so well (Armailhac, Lynch Bages, Léoville Poyferré etc.) that it is hard for me to rate. Opening any time soon I'd recommend either P+P for the up-front, butch muscularity, or a looooong decant. 88-90P, perhaps?

1hr decant. Nose: Palate: Dark, robust fruit and minerality, long finish – blueberry?. "Classic" comes to mind – no overwhelming fruit, feels very structured. I really like this wine – not super complex but very enjoyable by my second glass. More fruit than the 2011 GPL by the second glass. Really good.

I think this wine was always unfairly painted with the negative brush of the vintage. We've always enjoyed it, and it keeps getting better. This wine, or at least this bottle, has really come into its own, making me regret my earlier decisions to open, and underscoring the ageability of Bordeaux. Deep black red, beautiful cassis and cedar nose, finely balanced palate, with cassis, pencil shavings, and even me some crisp red fruit notes, with suave tannins and gracefully supporting acidity, this is really in a perfect place right now, but no hurry to drink up. A real star in the vintage.

Iron, mineral, dark fruit. Good solid fruit, blocky tannic structure. A bit hard. It's funny, 5 years after my last taste of this wine, I'm still not sure where it's going. Feels like a 94 or 95 with a lot of acidic structure but not sure if the fruit will support the structure. Maybe it's still young?

From 75cl perfect cork (I have uploaded a photo, next to the abomination which ruined the other, severely corked bottle opened this evening.) Short decant. Thick, intense blackcurrant scent; wild, quite rich entry - yes, it's Pauillac, but completely untamed compared to your average Lynch Bages (particularly the 2002...); still quite strongly tannic on the finish. Ready now, 5-10 years in hand. 90P(?)
V. good, and might have tasted even better had my senses of smell and taste not been mugged by TCA. These days I prefer to buy screwcaps when spending more than the pain threshold for pouring 75cl of corked wine down the drain. That threshold, dear readers, is substantially lower than Château Pontet-Canet charges for their poorly-sealed product.

Bouchon impeccable, non entamé Robe : Plus claire que le Sociando Mallet Nez : sur le cassis, mure, avec quelques notes de sous-bois et de tabac blond. Bouche : Cassis, tabac. cellared since release, perfect level, good cork if on the shorter side, colour still relatively youthful, fine classy, classic Pauillac nose, really fine on the palate with perfect balance, good bite of acid and tannin at the finish which was perfect with the lamb, cuts the inherent fattiness, excellent dinner wine but also very enjoyable alone, decanted 2 hours but probably not necessary, did not change much from opening, excellent wine making, top notch for the vintage, very enjoyable now but no rush at all, because of the balance will make old bones

Note: I use a scale on which 85 represents a very good wine.
A bit from memory, but this bottle was easy to remember. Just shy of outstanding, for whatever reasons, perhaps not flavorful or complex enough to cross the threshold. Decanted for 1+ hours, during which time the wine opened up. Maybe a longer decant? Regardless, classic Bdx, and a pleasure to drink. Sadly, my last.

This wine has really hit its stride. It is still a deep, dark, purple, with only the slightest suggestion of browning along the rim. The bouquet recalls crush flowers, tobacco, and a variety of pepper & spice notions. This was drinking better a couple of years ago. It seems to have shut down. It is a bit four-square, with bitter berries, mild tannins, good saturation and balance. It tastes like a young wine though it has thrown a bit of sediment. I would leave it alone in the cellar for another 3-5 years. If it can shake off that youthful bitterness a lush wine should emerge. Try again in 2021-2023.

From my cold cellar. After delightful 2002's like Sociando Mallet, Clerc Milon, Leo B and Leo P and Montrose, this just would not open up even after a 2 hour decant. Surely there is power and subtlety hidden here but right now the tannins and acidity are too much.

Small PC vertical tasting at home. Poured 2000, 2001 and 2002 into a Zalto Bordeaux glass at home using Coravin and let sit for 30 min. All bottles stored in cold cellar. There is much less between these 3 wines than one might think given the overall different quality of these 3 vintages. All three still show a fairly dark garnet to the rim without much evolution. The 2000 is a bit tighter with fine tannins in the very beginning and needs some air to open up. It has also finer delineation than the 2001 and in particular the 2002, at the same time it lacks some concentration, especially given the overall quality of the vintage. The 2002 is the biggest and boldest of the three with broad strokes of dry dark fruit. More masculine and Pauillac like for my taste. The 2001 sits in between and is the most balanced of the three. The differences are however subtle as I was going back and forth between the wines to determine which I liked best but my conclusion varied sip by sip. All three are very good and fairly typical Pauillacs, without however reaching the top wines of the appellation. Can drink now but will last 10 years. 01 and 02 are the smart buys. 91-92

Another excellent 2002 Pauillac. This must be the most underrated vintage in this part of Bordeaux. While not at the level of the outstanding 2002 Pichon Baron, this is an excellent and classic Pauillac which I would love to try in a vertical against the 96 and 2000 Pontet Canet as this is the better Pauillac from memory. While accessible immediately after a 60 min slow ox, this wine benefits from another 60 min or so in the decanter as the nose becomes more aromatic with fine wood spices complementing the precisely drawn fruit on the nose. On the palate this has this masculine dry, dark fruit profile which seems to be a 2002 trademark and fits those Pauillacs so well. Integrated tannins. Medium finish. Great to drink now but will not fall off the cliff anytime soon

This wine is aging superbly! After a few bad experiences with some other older Bordeauxs—such as the Clos du Marquis 2000–This bottle has renewed my faith in the utiliy of aging these wines. The color reveals no real hints of age – – there is a slight lightening along the lip, but absolutely no Browning. It’s still a beautiful dark red color, leaning at times to purple. Bouquet is somewhat subtle, but it’s clearly a cedar box style. It is in the mouth where everything comes together: this wine is perfectly developed, harmonious, with velvety feel that never seems loosely nit because some soft tannins and a dash of acidity keeps the whole thing together. Very fresh on the aftertaste. This Wine may stay at this plateau for five or more years, but I doubt it will significantly improve, and if I had any more bottles I would drink I’m up now.

Two hours airing. Initially high acidity that was replaced by grippy tannins and fruit in the backseat, after a while the fruit starts to fade. Very similar to other -02s. Very uncertain about future potential. Should probably be consumed in the near future.
Similar note to last time (reproduced below). Drinking beautifully and certainly at a plateau now that should last for several years.
The wine is clear and deep garnet in colour. The nose is clean with pronounced intensity aromas of black fruit (blackcurrant, blackberry, black plum), oak, (smoke, cedar, clove), fruit development (date, prune, cooked black fruit), tertiary development (leather, cigar box). The wine is developing. The palate is dry with with medium (+) acidity, high ripe tannins, medium alcohol, full body, pronounced intensity flavours of blackcurrant, black plum, smoke, prune, leather, cedar. The finish is long. The wine is outstanding. It has great concentration of fruit, a long and persistent finish, complexity from primary, secondary and tertiary clusters. The acid and tannins are well balanced by the fruit, and the high tannins are soft and well integrated. The wine can be drunk now but is suitable for further ageing. It has the fruit concentration and acid/tannin structure to allow further tertiary development, although it is effectively now in its ideal drinking plateau and likely to remain there for 5-10 years. A mature Bordeaux that is drinking beautifully.

My next bottle of this vintage from Pontet Canet, an absolutely perfect cork, poured at first this one is a little subdued, nose of black currant and ripe brambleberry, fresh and elegant appearance on the palate, showing aromas of cedar, vanilla, mushrooms and more earthy tones, great depth and richness in this perfect bottle, has improved very positive by the further cellaring, long lush aftertaste with a convincing mineralic persistence, very good pairing with grilled lamb and pork, a stunning bottle today, this one is surely for me, give it one hour(+) in the decanter , enjoy now and over the next decade, ***(*+?), just a remark to the price tag of this wine, bought 3 bottles in 2005 for a nowadays ridiculously low price, 31€ and therefore the QPR of this bottle is extraordinary!

Middle finish like palate. 90 points, can further develop and grow. The Pontet Canet has not yet reached its maturity.

Expressive nose of black fruits, cedar and graphite. Nicely balanced fruit, acidity and tannins on the palate with enough there for further development to 2020. Some richness but some nice restraint too. Not a big and opulent effort like 2003, this is more toned down but very enjoyable.

From 75cl, perfect cork. Delicious on opening and unchanged an hour after decanting. Pure blackcurrant scent and entry; medium-bodied, rounded texture; silky, fully-resolved tannins. Super, delicious Médoc, just lacking that extra je ne sais quoi (probably due to the vintage). Fine now, no hurry, may even improve over 4-5 years. 90P

Fabulous nose of black fruits, cigar box, and spice. The palate is rich, complex and tannins surprisingly soft. Drinking beautiful now, but will last at least a decade.

WSET Diploma Practice Tasting - Various Combinations (Fredericks, Islington): The wine is clear and deep garnet in colour.

Monthly Tuesday group #006: Bordeaux 2001 versus 2002 (By VD): Beautiful, expressive and luxurious bouquet with creamy dark forest fruits, some smoke, cedar and sweet licorice. On the palate dark berries like cassis, chocolate, vanilla, coffee, some (bell) pepper. Good acidity and soft tannin with still a good bite. Very good length. Overall a beautiful and creamy wine which is about halfway its maturity stage and might still improve a bit. Tasting the 2001 and 2002 blind beside each other I am not sure which one I prefer. The 2002 is definitely a great success for the vintage. I scored both wines 91.

The wine looks crimson colored. There is light sediment in the bottle. It has a stoniness on the nose. The body is medium with a smooth texture. The wine finishes medium and has low acidity. Overall I think the fruit is fading on this one. Seems past its drinking window but still food friendly.

Nose of red fruits and spice. The palate shows red currants and sour cherries with loads of cedar spice notes and prickly tannins. Shows young, needs time.

An easy afternoon with close friends (@ FD Pomerol): Beautiful wine which, after hearing it was a 2002, I pinpointed blind as Pontet Canet. Just in the glass the wine was not so very expressive, but soon cassis and other dark fruits, beautiful oak, graphite and a touch of pleasant barnyard appeared. On the palate all the impressions of the nose are there as well and a slight touch of green bell pepper which belongs to 2002. Firm acidity and firm tannin as well with still a spicy bite. Keeping this until 2020 will not be any problem. It might last even longer.

Medium body - smoke, iodine, green tobacco, sour cherry nose - earthy, slightly oaky but well balanced palate, good dark fruit - tannins are there, slightly drying but good - v g length, resonates a bit - this will go another 2-5 yrs easily, has the fruit to carry it off - nice.

This wine is hitting its stride and is much more developed and integrated than the 2004 or 2005 PC vintages. textbook left bank with ripe currant, boysenberry and cherry, taking on some savory leather and soy notes on the finish. overall, very muscular and satisfying. 92-94
Decanted for 3 plus hours and drunk over 48 hours. Typical slightly shut nose, medium bodied but very smooth on palate, with typical black fruit, neither tannin nor acidity offsetting a very pure and pleasant taste. The best 2002 left bank I have tasted in last 3 years.

Continues to drink extremely well at this stage of its evolution. Medium bodied with nicely integrated tannins. There's plenty of structure, but well balanced by the fruit so the tannins add character and depth rather than harsher notes. Intermixed black cherry and black raspberry upfront with chocolate and currants on the finish. Smooth now and given the structure and fruit, while it will last several more years, (no worries about immediate fading), I agree with prior tasters that this wine isn't likely to improve much more.

With my apologies, as this is a bit from memory. Very nice bottle. Classic Bordeaux. Tannins almost sweet. Certainly well resolved. Benefited from breathing for a little while (45 min). No need to rush, although I am not certain how much improvement is in the future.

Solid bdx, if a bit square and somewhat boring. Clean cassis on the nose and palate, which turns a bit austere in the finish. Slightly flat, average energy. Given the fruit/tannin balance, drinking well now with unclear upside. Drink/hold.

Open nose, dark berries, some nutty notes. Grippy bitter tannin, good acidity, medium fruit on the palate. I'd wait a bit longer on this one for the tannins to round out.

Beau vin, très classique avec ses notes de havane et de bois précieux. Ensemble harmonieux et fondu. Manque un petit peu de fonds et de longueur pour être grand. Est arrivé à maturité.

Good, but in my opinion still very wound up, I suppose it's how you like them but I felt that this has quite a long way to go in development to reach it's full potential. Decanting helped and it needs food and the aromatic profile is narrow as is the palate. I'll hold for another 5-6 years. If you like them brutish it's certainly worth opening but if your palate is more British let them sleep.
My first ever tasting note on a website I have followed for years! My fourth bottle of a case bought en primeur. The best so far. Smooth (but not lacking depth), sweet and, above all, classy - really classy. Reminds me again that you don't need to drink a blockbuster bordeaux year to enjoy its finest attributes. Probably drinking as well now as it ever will in my view.

Decanted and immediately started drinking. This has continued to improve and seems to have hit its stride. Currant, earth, roasted herbs. Medium bodied, perfectly integrated, strong finish. I've changed my opinion from my last note and think this will hold here for years.

Raspberry and earth on the nose; very pretty. Medium to full bodied and exceptionally smooth and balanced at this stage. Showing strong black raspberry flavors with a solid earth and mineral backbone throughout. Deeper and fuller into the finish where there is plenty of structure, but the tannins are fully integrated. Overall, smooth and silky with very nice fruit notes and excellent balance and backbone. Will certainly evolve a bit, but I think it will be drinking as well as it can over the next few years.

Very nice Pauillac nose. Has his drinking window reached. Medium structure, fruit still easily available. At the end of the act a bit dry and it is easy to recognize green notes. My criticism is on high level, but it must be with a PC too. I prefer the 2001's, but not only for PC. Pontet Canet 2002, 91/100 drink until 2020

Twelve years in, this is now starting to show some secondary and tertiary flavors/nuances. Vast improvement from a few years ago. 3 hour decant. Tobacco, cherries, fried fruits. Softening tanins. It should continue to improve slightly. Drink at least through 2020.

Deep dark red center, red rim with some signs of age. Grassy, raspberry, cherry jam, cassis, a little creamy, greasy smoked bacon, toasty. Smooth, a little sweet, blackcurrant and mature cheese, dry, modest tannins, smokey, cut grass, roasted nuts, jammy and plummy finish, reasonable grassy length. Much improved from the last tasting many years ago, mature, low on richness, but good on flavor and individuality. Good to drink now.

Definite uptick from last bottle. PnP. Evolved over 2 hours we drank it. Black cherry, green pepper nose. Dark chocolate, currant, sage, earth taste. Full bodied by end, well integrated, good finish. Don't see any upside here but will probably hold for a few years. Not a long term wine.

The market price of Pontet Canet rising due to the recent RP100pts tag on its 09 vintage This 2002 vintage was a relative bargain With its great fruit structure, this wine needed almost 1.5 hours before it opened up Although may still need another few years before it reaches it's maturity, with its softened tannin, good amount of fruit and a slight hint of tertiary note, it is definitely a lovely wine to enjoy now

This is a somewhat reticent Pauillac, if typical. A little green mixed in the nose with mostly currants. Palate has some rather prominent chunky tannins that are quite dry--along with currants and some black fruits. Moderate to short finish. Not the most polished, complex, or elegant Pontet-Canet, leaning more toward d'armailhac in style as compared to Mouton. I would agree with others that this is in a nice place for balanced fruit and tannin, and I don't see a high upside for long term aging. Drink or hold for medium term.

Heady aromas of cherries and toast. Good minerality in the taste, which tells me that this will gain complexity as it ages. The tannin has receded though, leaving a velvety smooth wine that is a delight to drink right now. With the tannin resolved, I'm not sure how much more this will mature, but there is plenty of fruit in this luscious bottling. Drink now or hold for a few years. A wonderful Pauillac.

Occasional tasting group (@ My place Bordeaux 2002 plus some other nice wines.): Beautiful and really Pauillac bouquet with dark fruits like cassis, beautiful oak, graphite and licorice. Great effort for the vintage and great wine. 92 - 93.

Opaque purple. Nose of citrus an berries. Medium body with tart blackberry on the palate. Firmly structured with tight tannins and firm acidity on the long finish. This required lots of air to open up. Better on day 2. Should improve for 10+ years.

Garnet and opaque in color. Tastes of mocha, cherries, licorice, and smooth tannins backed by integrated acidity. This is a big, balanced glass of wine to enjoy with something savory like a grilled steak. This will improve with time, gaining complexity, but it tastes so good now it is hard to keep a cork in it. Enjoy it while your 2005s, 2009s, and 2010s age.

Popped and poured. Beautiful nose - pencil lead, damson and hints of oak. Dark and bright in glass. On palate, tannins dominate and drive to a mid-length finish. Fruit notes are classic dark berries (loganberry touches) tending more to a traditional acidity balance. I don't see that the tannins will ever really soften out other than after long decanting
Very dark red, smell very inky and tannic, taste likewise, it took three (3) days before the wine (half a bottle left) was smoothened out, although it was still full of (ripe) tannins.

Bill's Monthly Lunch - June 2013 (Vancouver, BC): Tasted blind – This was served alongside my wine (’96 Lynch Bages) so even though it seemed obviously Bordeaux to me, I may have been influenced by my knowledge as others didn’t peg this as Bordeaux right away. Nose of riper Bordeaux fruit with coffee and graphite notes. A touch warm on the palate with fairly resolved tannins. This seemed much riper than the ’96 LB and perhaps would have shown better had it been served on its own. Drink now and for another five years. Very good.

I must say this was the highlight of the night, this just blow the 2002 Lascombe we open earlier out of the water. Inky and deep purple. Lead pencil on the nose, I can smell it across the room, everything you are looking for in a Pontet.

France vs. Italy @ Roel's (Netherlands): Wet rocks, cardboard, ink, banana, some VA. Difficult nose, reticent. On the palate this feels more like a Bordeaux. Roasted bell-peppers, tapenade, fingerpaint, cherry fruit, prunes and cassis. Some cedar and a small tuft of tobacco. Seems muddled, closed. Nose is not catching up with the palate. Fine, though not up to the reputation of the Chateau. 16,5/20 Brother told us that it was much better on day 2. So it probably needed more air.

Dark ruby in color without showing much sign of aging at all. The wine actually has quite a nice bouquet, with currants, pencil lead, cassis, violet and cream, with rather strong herbaceous scents. Although with more aeration, added dark chocolate and rust. Medium to full bodied, with notes of smoke, earth, black and purple fruits, green pepper, although seems muddled and lacking good balance. Firm, yet dry tannins with high acidity. Finish has mix of smoke, espresso bean and spice. This wine can certainly age, hopefully can add some complexity and texture, though really not sure.

Probably needed more air. Classic nose: blackcurrant, and cigar. Palate finished a bit short, and lacks complexity in comparison to the 04 Lynch Bages earlier this evening. Better with time - and a lovely sweet red fruit sweetness on the nose after 3 hours.

Weekly tasting group #058; Bordeaux left bank 2001, 2002 and 2003. (@ VD): This is one comparative note for the 2001, 2002 and 2003. In color the 2001 is the most transparent and the 2003 the most dark. In the bouquet all three vintages are almost the same. Very classical with cassis and other dark forest fruits, graphite (lead pencil) and luxurious oak with a beautiful toast. On the palate the 2001 shows good dark fruits, smoke, sweet spices, some chocolate and beautiful oak. Also a beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness and soft tannin. All mentioned for the 2001 also goes for the 2002, but there is a little more extraction. Also more creaminess, coffee and finesse. The 2003 is a category of its own. Enormously concentrated, luxurious cedar, sweet spices, chocolate and intense luxurious juice, finesse and complexity. All three wines will improve with some more ageing. The 2001 will probably be at its best between 2016 and 2018. The 2002 between 2017 and 2020 and the 2003 between 2019 and 2025+. Wihout any doubt the best flight of the evening and I scored the wines as follows: 2001 - 91. 2002 - 92 and 2003 - 95+

I have always read that 2002 was a bad year in Bordeaux...but this Pontet Canet was awfully good. Lots of dark fruit, spice, and a brambly finish with solid tannins. Went well with a Christmas tenderloin. It must have another 8-10 years left for those who want to age further

Holed Up Vs. Hurricane Sandy; 10/30/2012-10/31/2012: The bottle had been open for nearly 48 hours by the time I tasted it, and I'm glad because this wine is still very young. Aromas of plums, cassis, loam, pencil lead and roses. The palate shows pure plum fruit, grainy tannins and medium acid. Lots of pencil shavings, graphite and tar. Quite delicious, but clearly still a young Pauillac. Some classic structure and flavors, and I'd like to try it again in a decade.

2000-2009 vertical of Chateau Pontet-Canet, with Alfred Tesseron (Roberson Wine, South Ken, London): It lacks the magic of a good Bordeaux and the 1 hour of decanting much like the 2004 didn’t help. Back to the wine, it has a light muted nose. Quite light on the palate almost on the thin side yet it maintains a good balance and elegance and good to see that the wine maker here didn’t try to overdo something to compensate for the vintage. Lacks concentration in a way and has some dry tannin on the finish. 90 and not sure how it evolves from here.

taste: full bodied with some very taught tannins. The tannins are somewhat overpowering right now with tones of pencil lead, cedar, dark red cherries and some green tones as well. It thins out on the mid palate too.
overall: still in need of time, but likely never to be more than what it is. A straightforward pauillac with decent depth on both the nose and palate.

2002 Bordeaux - 10 Year Retrospective (Maude's Liquor Bar - Chicago, IL): The fruit's intensity here was pretty nice and blended well with the toasty oak notes. Enjoyed the dark berries, pipe tobacco, tilled soil and floral notes that were woven together on the palate. Compared to many other 2002 Bordeaux this evening, this seemed to have a nice combination of fruit intensity and oak presence.

Perfect, youthful claret color. Appealing nose of old perfume, slightly green but in a good way. Similar palate, with leather and dark fruit. Took Decanters advice and popped a couple 2002 Bordeaux; Pontet Canet and Ducru Beaucaillou. They were right as both were open for business... The Pontet Canet had a classic left bank nose that was average if a little flat. On the palate straight forward black currant and spice comes through. Powerful for the vintage and compared to the Ducru Beaucaillou. Lightly drying finish. Nice wine without being flashy, perfect for the dinner table. Should easily last another 5+ years.

I've been a big fan of the 2002 vintage - but no getting away from recent poor showings and this is another. Wonderful nose - black plum fruit, hints of liquorice, leather. But palate is simply out of balance even after 3 hours air. Lack of concentration would be fine but this is thin, tannic, sharp: all tobacco and no fruit. None of the velvet silkiness from a few years ago. I hope this - and the many others I have previously loved from the vintage come around - but for now only 88.

My first Pontet-And this was a special treat, a birthday bottle from my friend Ray. We had a special Beef Borg in the new Crock pot. Man did this bottle sing with the slow cooked beef. The Nose is as deep and floral as you read about. The mouthfeel was soft and velvety. The cherry, cassis, slight graphite, and mild cedar make this a wonderful brdx. Cannot wait to pop my 2005/2006 bottlings in the next 5-10 years!! Oh can I wait?

I really like this wine and wish I had purchased more at the time. Oh well...
Dark purple in the glass the nose is very closed at first but then emerges with black plum fruit, minerals, charcoal and a bit of cassis. Really lovely to sniff all night long. In the mouth thick and round with good acidity and some tannin. I'd guess this is very early days for this one. Should look for more.

One of tthje least impressive PC's that i have had. Having said that...it blows away the Orin Swift Prisoner I had at dinner. Chateau Pontet Canet Vertical 1994-2004 plus 1990: I think this was the weekest wine of the vertical with relatively diluted aromas. On the other hand it was also the more fruit-forward. Medium bodied with signs of evolution despite its relatively young age it also had the driest tannins. Flavors included red fruit (something unusual for Pontet Canet), cedar, ink and also present was a green leafy dimension.

Has opened beautifully lately, the wine is really singing. Classic left bank, fruit is no longer dominating but blending seamlessly with tea leaves and herbs. Palate shows beautiful constitution, no leanness nor herbaceous notes. The wine is medium- to full-bodied, nice tannins which do not protrude whatsoever. Length is however moderate. Wine with great class but not overpowering, drinking great now.

Decanted for 2hrs.. Nose of dark fruits, cassis, and hints of floral. Even maybe a bit of coffee notes finish off the nose. Give it a few more years for the tannins to completely come into balance.

Red-ruby. cool vintage at its best. concentrated and full bodied with cherry, chocolate, anise and toast with a pleasing leafy/ minty background. this is a muscular wine with firm to slightly sweet tannins and a moderately long finish. Wine opens slowly, but gets smoother and more enjoyable while sitting in the glass. This is the antithesis of 2003 and other "ripe" vintages. While it may not have the concentration and flamboyance of better vintages, ironically, I think it has the structure and pedigree for the long haul. Hold or drink through 2020

An easy afternoon with close friends. 2010-06: Bordeaux. (@ FD): Beautiful bouquet with cassis, some red berries and luxurious oak. Beautiful cassis on the palate, just a hint of pleasant sweetness as well. Soft and good tannin. For 2002 full bodied and round with firm but good bitterness and acidity. Young adult stage now. Lacks the luxury of the great vintages. Will offer pleasant drinking from now to 2016 or even a bit longer.

Tasted at Château Pontet-Canet in Pauilliac. After a great tour we sampled the 2002. Young, tight with grippy tannins but still quite good. Can't imagine what this wine is like in a good vintage like an 05.

Two bottles tried recently both exceeded expectations. Brooding dark fruit aromas, a hint of florals - red roses with a distinct sweet oak note, and a smooth palate with some richness. Restrained rather than overt flavours, modern in style, sophisticated.

BdX 01/04 (Oslo): Dark with almost some blue notes; some oak, a certain sweetness – almost candy-like, flat taste curve, a bit disjointed and hollow, watery.

Wonderful bouquet of dark chocolate and cherries. Medium to full bodied. Smooth, everything that makes Bordeaux worth drinking. Long finish. Decanted 2 hours.

Really tight. Decanted for about five hours and it still was not coming into its own until about hour seven. Elegant with a bit of spice and earth. Medium-length finish. Needs more time.

From 375 ml. Decanted 2 hours. Maybe this bottle wasn't dumb but it is certainly not the brightest kid in the class. I'm going to write it off to a tough vintage and being at an awkward stage of life. Nice aromatics of cedar and pencil shavings. Very soft texture but not much fruit here. A bit thin and vegetal. Based on my tries of 2002 (particularly Grand Puy Lacoste), I'm thinking that this vintage isn't for me--a bit too green and weedy. I have another bottle and won't drink for a few years.

Black tea, blackberry, plum, blueberry and cassis on a cool palate. Tannic finish. Flavor profile not as attractive and exotic and fresh as other P-Cs of the 21st century. In fact, this is the weakest one I have tasted of the last 9 vintages. Store further ... A tough vintage.

Drank for the first time, even though P-C is one of my favorite estates from Bordeaux, dark colored, sweet aromas of tobacco smoke and black fruits, strong grip on the palate but unobtrusive with a delicate finish for at least 30 seconds. Love this wine, still has time for the best balance

Cassis, earth, blackberry, pepper, blue fruit, hints of floral, tobacco and pepper notes make up the perfume. This full bodied wine shows some rustic sensations in mouth as the tannins are not fully ripe. The wine finishes with a big mouthful of cassis.

Dark color. No sign of brickening. On the nose dark berries, blackcurrant, lead pencil and some wood (not overly much - I would believe this to integrate nicely in a couple of years). Nice attack in the mouth, medium body, nice acidity and pretty rounded tannins for an 8-year-old, but definately present. Some wood. Lacks a bit of concentration to be 'up there' but still a very nice glass of wine, and definately worth the approx 40 bucks I paid for it. Still have more in the cellar - will let them rest a little longer.

Tasted at the Bibendum 2009 Bordeaux EP Tasting Didnt know what to expect from this wine as our exp with 2002 is limited. Wine is showing very nicely at the moment, smooth yet with presence and a nice nose. I wouldnt hesitate to open it now if i had some. At 40£ per bottle we might buy some. It would make a good wine for a restaurant purchase as the not so celebrated vintage would limit the mark up, or at least one would hope.

Lovely open aromas of berries and raisins. The palate supremely smooth, it starts of with slight toffee and then this fades to reveal wonderfully ripe fruit - it is as if the black currants and black berries are literally popping in your mouth. A beautiful wine with still some 5-6 years in it.

Still primary and on the young side to my taste, the wine is however slowly getting there, the tannins are no longer prominent and there is no strong herbaceous taste lingering there. This should become very nice with more age.
Pop and pour with no decant. Some cassis, pencil shavings and a bit of tobacco on the nose. Lots of nice black fruits framed by good acidity up front and a smooth finish. To be honest, I wasn't expecting this to be as good as it was and I was pleasantly surprised with the wine.

Very correct wine for Pauillac. Nose has slight edge of greenness, which I personally like, but this was not as strong after about 30 minutes in the glass. This is a juicy wine with good fruit and acidity that has a long, slightly bitter finish on the back end. Probably needs 4+ more years. From a 375.

Second bottle showed about the same as the last, but I found the flavors to be turned up a notch this time out, which was refreshing. Actually, this time out I was left wondering if I judged the wine too soon by saying that it was peaking. Considering the bright acid and soft tannins, I am wondering if this might not just be in an awkward stage right now. I think a few more years might soften the wine a bit, which would allow the earth, lead, tobacco and black fruits come through more. I doubt it'll gain any more weight, but if the acid chills out a bit this could still get better in time.

Beautiful color. Deep dark red with great intensity. Great nose with so much fruit that the alcool was hardly noticable. Wine is still very young, though also very drinkable. Presence of laether and dard red fruit but also very "juicy" like berry juice. I would wait some more (5?) years to have it become a more mature taste with more richness, which stays now to much hidden in its freshness.

Popped and let sit uncorked in the bottle for about an hour, then splash decanted. Muted nose of dusty earth, pencil shavings, sweet oak, and dark berry undertones. Good dose of acid throughout, but the wine is still pretty thin and only mildly structured. Still, it is is flavorful with a nice balance of the lead, a bit of tobacco, and dry earth with black currant and blue berries. Overall a nice wine, but certainly not up to the level of quality that I have come to expect from Pontet Canet. That said, these are well priced and drinking probably about as best as they are going to get (and likely declining).

One of the stores I normally buy at had an inventory clearance sale. They found a bunch of the 02 and I bought 9. They were probably held at around 70 degrees since issue so I assumed they would be further along than if properly cellared. Opened one but did not decant and just went with swirling. Huge nose of dark fruit initially which muted over the evening. Palate of earth, mushroom with some cherry notes. Medium body and medium finish. Not sure where this is going to go from here now that its properly cellared and I will put them in the drinking rotation. So much wine, so little time.

Beautiful garnet color with just a hint of brickish red starting to develop on the edge. Aromas of black cherry and cassis with leather and fennel and pepper notes too. The fruit is really starting to open up (took only about 20 minutes in the decanter). Nice fresh cassis and cherry flavors up front followed by the earthy and leathery spices. I don't know why they keep saying 2002 is such a bad vintage ... this just keeps getting better. Open next bottle in 6 months to a year or so.

Reading through some tasting notes I thought I would give this a go as it seems it could be headed toward the dumb phase. Decanted for 2 1/2 hours. Very dark and intense purple with some ruby on the edge. On the nose it was powerful dark fruit (blackberry), currant, cassis, leather and some floral elements. A very full bodied mouthfeel with dark fruit, blackberry, currant and some of that nice Pauillac minerality. The tannins were sweet but a bit pronounced which makes you realize this is still a baby and has quite a bit of life left in it. There is a nice and welcome splash of acidity and it finishes long and elegant. The 2002 vintage on the left bank in bordeaux was nothing special but this is a clear standout. I am going to let my remaining bottles sleep for a while. 50+5+13+17+7=92pts

I put this wine together with a Poyferré 2003 in a blind tasting (and some other wines) - and expected it to be run over. This wine surprised everyone at the table! Clear second wine of the night (after Poyferré). Very concentrated, slightly green notes (which I have no problem with), cedar wood. Aristocratic, minerally with a long slightly tannic finish. In a few years time this might gain a point or two.

Mooie mysterieuze zwartrode kleur. 18/20

Good bottle, fresh and easy to drink from nice acidity that gives the wine structure. Tannins nicely integrated. Lacks a bit weight in the mid palate. Will be interesting to see the evolution of this wine. As for now, very good match with food.

One of the better ones in the vintage, medium to full bodied with a charming and refreshing first impression, mix of minerals and berries provide good balance but also lack of distinctiveness. Tannins still too austere, needs more time.

Drank from a split. Dark robe. Nice secondary characteristics beginning to emerge. Cedar, lead pencil, dark fruits, leather, earth. Great stuff that will certainly improve with bottle age.
* * * 1/2 now but I won't be surprised if this merits another half point in a few years
Drank alongside the 99 and this was clearly better. Nose was of leather mineral and dark berrys. Mouthfeel was nearly fullbodied, and the wine expressed the traditional pauillac mineralty and granite character, with a more full bodied and layered palate of dark fruit, leather, and some sage. Finish was long. This could actually use more cellar time.

Great claret from a challenging year for bordeaux. Soft and approachable, the tannins are softer than I remember from previous tastings, and the fruit is rich and vibrant. There is less slate and mineral than in other vintages.

I liked this wine much more than the last time I tried it. black color, dark red at the rim. strong nose and taste of chewy black fruits and a bit of lightly toasted oak. Muscular, perfect acidity, sweet to slightly hard tannins and a moderately long finish. Wine opens nicely, and just gets better while sitting in the glass. Another example of an excellent wine this unheralded vintage. One of the best QPR wines I've had this year. I think this wine has a lot of promise. Based on this tasting, I'll be looking to pick up another case.

Color is dark garnet to the rim. Nose shows cassis, tar, hint of pepper, and a touch of heat. On the palate, chewy dark fruit at the fore framed by earth, tar and smoke. Bit too acidic at this point, but overall fairly good. Should unwind over time.

(initially) The nose reminds me a lot of 02 Pichon Lalande - very cool, with violets, other subtle floral notes, almost no oak, cool cassis and brambly richer blackberry. A hint of cassis leaf or bramble. Also similar, come to think of it, to a recent bottle of 00 Reserve de Comtesse. At this point, it's like a hypothetical blend of a great Chinon with a Pauillac. Interesting.
(later) Opening more; more power and richness. Cassis and blackberry, a hint of woodsy bark, and a little liqueur-like note of concentration toward the finish. The ripe pepper note is gone, replaced with a lingering creme de mure note on the finish... very nice! The violetty cab franc note remains present. Hopefully it will keep improving.

Dick's Pre-purchase Bordeaux Sampler (Dick's house): Excellent minerality reminiscent of rough-cut stones is almost stronger than the rich dark fruit aromas. The palate shows good fat and concentration, nice fruit, ripe tannins and a pleasing finish of more minerality. Fairly tight at this time.

The infamous ballpoint pen label bottle (salesperson tore open my half-case with the business end of a Bic pen, writing all over the label...). Decent, solid, but somewhat unexciting Pauillac. Perhaps a little too much structure to fully enjoy at 3 years old. Wanted to try one off the bat since I have the rest of the case laying down. Somewhat tight, some red fruit, perhaps some secondary notes I would describe as herbal or tobacco.

Wow. The nose offers a ton of interesting aromas – sweet smoky/flinty cassis, vanilla, some medicinal underbrush, and black tea. In the mouth there is good sweetness, similar flavors (with the addition of some blackberries), and then a big broadside of tannin stops the revel. If this tannin “melts”, this be mind-bogglingly good. This is way more rustic than Lynch Bages, and even GPL, but it’s big. Awesome!

This wine was tasted at the Union des grand crus tasting in Brussels Pontt Canet shows some tobacco and red fruit as well as a little bit of black fruit. It is round in the mid palate with well integrated tannins. It has a good attack but a fairly unbalanced finish. I suspect that the wine will need a little bit of cellaring before consumption

Tasted at the Chateau from the barrel along side a 1995 Pontet Canet. Impressive, nicely structured wine dominated now by a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose (the other Medoc I tried all showed primarily black fruit). Fine tannins and ripe fruit make for a good balance. The wine only falls short in showing great complexity (in contrast to the Mouton 2002 tasted immediately afterward). Worth acquiring, however, for the right price, I think this wine will be drinkable before some of the other 2002 Medoc...

Tasting note:
Lots of herbal features such as menthol, a pretty ripe, darkish cherry fruit and sweet notes of raw vanilla beans. So far so good. A fresh, fruit palate showing more red type of berries. Still good so far. Unfortunately the palate was significantly skewed towards acidity leaving a complete lack of balance.

Fin, frais, l'élégance bordelaise, la race de Pauillac, on y est! les 2002 manquent juste d'un peu de luxuriance, de fruit, de maturité peut-être, pour rivaliser avec les grands millésimes (ah 2000 chez PC!).

Drink up.

Best bottle yet. Needs an hour in a decanter, which I found out too late. Tight at first, then suave plums, silky tannins, complex earthy elements, and a wonderfully long finish.

3 1/2 years since the last note and still drinking at the same level.
Dry palate, high acidity, high fine tannins, med alcohol, medium body, med+ intensity flavours of blackcurrant, prune, earth, smoke, spice. Long finish.

I think this wine was always unfairly painted with the negative brush of the vintage. We've always enjoyed it, and it keeps getting better. This wine, or at least this bottle, has really come into its own, making me regret my earlier decisions to open, and underscoring the ageability of Bordeaux. Deep black red, beautiful cassis and cedar nose, finely balanced palate, with cassis, pencil shavings, and even me some crisp red fruit notes, with suave tannins and gracefully supporting acidity, this is really in a perfect place right now, but no hurry to drink up. A real star in the vintage.

It tastes like a young wine though it has thrown a bit of sediment. I would leave it alone in the cellar for another 3-5 years. If it can shake off that youthful bitterness a lush wine should emerge. Try again in 2021-2023.

WSET Diploma Practice Tasting - Various Combinations (Fredericks, Islington): The wine is clear and deep garnet in colour.

The tannin has receded though, leaving a velvety smooth wine that is a delight to drink right now. With the tannin resolved, I'm not sure how much more this will mature, but there is plenty of fruit in this luscious bottling. Drink now or hold for a few years. A wonderful Pauillac.

Nose of riper Bordeaux fruit with coffee and graphite notes. A touch warm on the palate with fairly resolved tannins. This seemed much riper than the ’96 LB and perhaps would have shown better had it been served on its own. Drink now and for another five years. Very good.

A small 2002 Bordeaux Retrospective (Maude's Liquor Bar, Chicago IL): nose: straight forward and very pauillac tones of pencil lead, cedar, cigar box tones, and dark red cherries. There is a slight green element to it that is slightly distracting.
taste: full bodied with some very taught tannins.

At $30 bottle locally it seems an excellent choice, especially if you have the patience to

palate. I think it will be appreciated at the dinner I'm going to tonight.
Probably I'll take the advice here and open it early.
I'm new to this wine, but here is a comparison. The store had another year, maybe the 2001,
at about $45 and to me they tasted about the same, only this one tastes younger, and not as smooth
so if you like this label I would give this a try.
The current internet prices on other years for this wine run from $60 to $100.

Presence of laether and dard red fruit but also very "juicy" like berry juice. I would wait some more (5?) years to have it become a more mature taste with more richness, which stays now to much hidden in its freshness.

One of the better ones in the vintage, medium to full bodied with a charming and refreshing first impression, mix of minerals and berries provide good balance but also lack of distinctiveness. Tannins still too austere, needs more time.

Disappointing. Highly rated wine, but tasted thin and tannic. Maybe too young, but not so much there.

This will last another 10 years comfortably. Blackberries and tobacco on the nose and a spiced plum, black fruit and leather finish. Very full wine which needs a good couple of hours decanting.

Tasted in a vertical of PCs, somewhat overshadowed by the '04 which shined, but solid Pauillac with nicely developing eath and leather tones. Body slightly watery. short finish. 90pts

Well rounded but medium body without much aftertaste. A bit weak for Paulliac but very drinkable now.

initially very closed nose, opens after 2 hours in the glass, nose of wet earth and iron with dark purple fruits. Nice tannins, very wet in the mouth, acidic, flavor profile is muted, but long. Ill try again in 2 years.

The nose reminds me a lot of 02 Pichon Lalande - very cool, with violets, other subtle floral notes, almost no oak, cool cassis and brambly richer blackberry. A hint of cassis leaf or bramble. Also similar, come to think of it, to a recent bottle of 00 Reserve de Comtesse. At this point, it's like a hypothetical blend of a great Chinon with a Pauillac. Interesting.
(later)
Opening more; more power and richness.

Red to purple with medium intensity and medium legs.
Aromas of cedar, pencil shavings, cherry, tobacco and chocolate
Taste full round flavors of cherry and currant. Structure of firm smooth tannins mostly on the front palate with a medium finish.

Bouche dense, fruitée, puissance plus que finesse, alcool, tannins massifs.

Very tight and not giving much on the nose or palate. Seems to be pretty packed -- but, in the end, it's straightforward and not especially interesting. No idea where this will go. Other wines seemed better tonight.

Awesome!

Pontt Canet shows some tobacco and red fruit as well as a little bit of black fruit.
