Red fruit. Slight brick on the edge. Closed initially. Two hour decant is required to open it up. Once it does, fruit is lean with smooth tannins. The deficiency of the vintage is obvious, but it is an admirable effort. I regret I already consumed half of my case per-maturely, when they are too green. Time to pop a bottle or two with no hurry.

From mag. Who said the2007 vintage was bad? They didn’t taste it 16 years from inception or 14 years in bottle. Excellent as our first prime rib wine.
2nd night tasting with leftovers. One glass left. It’s dark inky, round, mushy velvety tannins, dark currants, blackberries, blackberries, black plum, dark cherries, plum pudding, strawberry highlighter, dry stones, limestone powder, dark turned earth, soft, fresh & dry tobacco notes, soft lead pencil shavings, wet volcanic ash, moist clay, charcoal, sandalwood, understated dark spice, dark chocolate, just a touch of baking spices, dark & red withering flowers, violets, excellent round acidity and a well knitted structure, balanced fruit & earth, good tension with a long elegant finish that falls on a dry mineral finish lasting 90 seconds.
I always leave an inch to inch and half in the bottle to pour a bit to all at the end. I believe the expression for that is, “The Truth! From the expression, The truth is inside. It doesn’t lie and makes for more extremely concentrated sip(s). You might say it is a lot like monosodium glutamate…everything you tasted in the wine previously, taste more.

I get the reticence expressed by others but I actually rather liked this. Yes, it is not the most ripe example of HB ever, but with a good decant, it opened beautifully to reveal quite a beguiling mixture of cherry and rose flavours over a grainy, earthy, although velvety base. It's true that it's a little pricey now for what you get, and a Poujeaux 96 at half the current price tasted better in comparison, but this HB is still a good wine if you like subtle flavours.

Perhaps I didn’t decant for long enough. It started out with a light to medium intensity on the nose, very little fruit or even dried fruit for that matter. Mushroom and meat the dominant tertiary aromas and flavours. Hints of pepper. A little dull and light in the mouth. Tannins nicely softened though. Given more time it began to grow some legs, a little more juicy cooked blackberry, musk and spice - definitely a little smack of pepper. Subtle and understated. Good to very good - not enough flavour intensity or complexity to be outstanding.

Elegant wine if a little lighter that I would expect from a HB. Subtle flavors that require you to concentrate to really appreciate the wine. Fully mature now although certainly not in decline. Really benefitted from a couple of hours decant.
Dark color but quite a light wine. Nice, prominent aroma dominated by cigar box and cedar with a little mint. Clearly well mature.
Palate: Still quite a bit of blackcurrent with the cigar box plus some pencil lead. Tannings are very soft and smooth, acid quite prominent. Medium body and a long finish.

Light body. Nice dark fruits with some freshness and also secondary flavors. Good complexity and structure into the finish. Tannins are a bit drying but this was only noticeable after dinner / pairing with food. I’d probBly wait 2-3 years before opening another, although this is quite enjoyable now.

Popped an poured, and drank over two days. Great showing for an “off vintage”. Fully mature (at least in my mind), with secondary leather and tobacco notes. Similar flavor profile to that drink 5-6 years ago, so this is holding in place. No need to wait!

1/3, vg cork, decanted 1/2 hr. Deep ruby core, pale ruby rim. Nose is quite mute - dark fruit, cedar, maybe a touch of tobacco. Medium bodied, quite lean and mean, almost austere, showing dark fruit, spice, cedar, vibrant/crisp acidity and chalky tannins on the medium-good length finish. OK, but definitely a product of its vintage

This is one of the best Pessac-wines from 2007 that I have tasted. Very nice nose with cassis, plum, warm gravel, tobacco, and cedar. In the mouth the wine is medium-body with a impressive black fruit and a very long komplex finish. This wine can age for 3-5 years more but i very pleasant to drink right now. Surprisingly good because a supposed bad year. Nice light red fruit. Nice balance and length and decent freshness. Dirnking nicely, but no rush. Rob's note: 2007 was a revelation after 2006 as the difference in style was v noticeable - much more noticeable fruit, but in a fresh, elegant and with depth. (2006 la parde and 2006 tasted more similar than 2006 and 2007, which felt like different wines)

Expressive nose of tertiary Bordeaux aromas with dark fruit and earthy scents. The palate is on the lighter side, lovely to drink. Tannins a bit dry at the end.

Fin duft preget av solbær. Litt grønt preg på duft med noe paprika. Fortsatt frukt igjen men virker litt mager.

This is a solid, if not inspiring Bordeaux. It has some classic characteristics of Pessac (smokey roasted meats), but the acid is a bit drying as the fruit starts to fade. Drink up

Too much acidity even after a long decant. Probably better tuck it away for another 2-3 years to obtain better balance. But not sure it will ever be a 91+ wine.

Nicely open and promising classic earthy Bordeaux nose, clean and pure, no brett or volatility whatsoever, on the palate licorice, (clean) undergrowth and earth, fresh red berries, minerality, a tad salty, very drinkable now though there is a certain degree of thinness to the body which gives away the vintage, nevertheless enjoyable from the get go and becomes a bit better in one hour, an attractive early drinking vintage, in all probability this is not one for the long haul.

From Paris with Love, 2019 Edition; 11/15/2019-11/17/2019 (Paris (Le Voltaire, La Tour D'Argent & Epicure)): Another great 2007 and fro the young BDX vintages 2007 is shaping to be one of our favourite ones and an easy go to on Avery restaurant list. This lovely Haut-Bailly was singing from the pop of the cork and we did not feel it needed decanting either. Still on the fruit but with a lovely evolved nose, leather, dark fruits, forest floor. Classic and elegant and effortless. 92-93

Raw meat, herbs, not much fruit on the nose -- though hints of plum. More red fruited on the palate with an open quality to it. I found this wine charming and unique, others found it flawed -- seems to be a polarizing wine.

K&L Bordeaux Tasting (San Francisco): Medium ruby to lighter outer third. Herb and brettanomyces. Starts with a nice rounder feel due to wood, lowish acidity, but the fruit is muted and impure, and the finish is dry and earthy. Beware-this is hardly squeaky clean, and I think it will only get worse.

Drinking well now, but needs a longish decant - maybe two hours. . Not a typical Pessac. No tobacco. Medium body, red fruits, great balance, tannins integrated. Elegant rather than powerful. ***

At first notes of dark fruit, herbs, spices on the nose. Not overly generous on the palate, but still well balanced, rather ripe tannins, some dryness towards the finish. Good length. With more time in the glass, some greenness came through, tannins more angular, coarse. A good effort for 2007. 88-90

Rather fine, beautiful balance. Reflects the green-ish vintage, but this isn't particularly green, nor though does it have quite the intensity of some Medoc grand cru from 2007.
Opens up with air. In think this is still best left for a couple of years.

Fully mature, lighter styled wine, as you would expect, given the vintage. Still, the wine offered pleasure and character with its dark cherry fruit, herbs and tobacco. Softly textured, and quite easy to drink, enjoy this for its charm now, while waiting for the three subsequent vintages, 2008, 2009 and 2010 to develop.

Fine classic Bordeaux-nose with cassis, leadpencil, green herbs, some leather. Taste is medium bodied, good fruit, cassis, meat, a touch of tobacco. Good balancing acidity, perhaps the tannin is a bit dry, but not disturbing really. Elegant rather than light, this is a fine piece of claret.

Ce vin est peu concentré, il manque de richesse et de longueur. Il y a des beaux fruits foncés, de l'espresso et du chocolat noir amer. J'ai du plaisir à boire ce vin, sauf que pour le prix des derniers millésimes, c'est du vol.

Garnet colored, medium+ body Some floral notes, rid licorice, wet wool, raspberry, leather
After a two hour decant there were bitter notes, leather, medium+ finish Some black cherries, light tannin, mossy. Very soft.
Relatively 'thin' wine. I was expecting more. By hour three++ the bitterness had dissipated, and it had opened up some. It definitely became more palatable.

Pessac-Leognan tasting: This Pessac-Leognan has more cool aromas and seems to be more closed then the Smith Haut Lafitte 2007 of my last post. Sweet raspberry, floral, paprika (also in this one), vanilla and graphite. A bit leaner in style also then the Smith Haut Lafitte, but with good uplifting acidity

I always like this producer and this wine is no exception. It has a slight awkwardness and stridency that I find with many wines of this vintage but there's real class here and the wine opens quite well after a bit of decanting. There's a creamy, refined, elegance here.

Haven't had too many '07s lately, and this confirms that some of them still need a lot of air. The nose exhibits cassis, blackberry, espresso, and lots of tobacco. Initially, the nose was quite smoky, but became more floral with time. Light on its feet, but still with nice concentration. A medium length finish with soft tannins on the back end. A nice wine that is drinking well now; just give it some air.

Intens mørk. ørliten vandig kant. Utrent nabo fant klassisk Bdx. Solbær og kirsebær (når du sier det...). Det er mineralske elementer her som er eiendommen kjennemerker. Litt vanskelig å beskrive dem men dem er gjenkjennelige fra andre årganger. Kjølig i munn, god struktur. Langt mer lineær enn for et par år siden. Bra vin men den er jo langt mer strukturert i nærliggende årganger. 90 p og imponert over hvordan vinene har utviklet seg.

Lovely dinner and vertical tasting at Haut Bailly (Château Haut Bailly): I like this more than when I had tried it back in 2013. Really, quite a nice development in bottle! Fine depth and focus, with a rather opulent mid palate that charms the drinker. It charmed me. Marked by finesse. Red and dark fruit ripeness. The finish is medium length but this wine has entered a favorable drinking window.

Haut Bailly always seems to get low scores when it's drunk young and that's fine by me because I like it and it's one of those Graves that simply never got expensive. From 375 this still isn't quite mature but it's getting there and with an hour of air, shows expressive dark cherry, creosote (more than pipe tobacco at this stage), mineral, and loamy earth. It's light on its feet; I like that. I don't like ponderous, over-oaked Graves (I'm talking to you, Magrez-era Pape Clement). This is still 5 years away from maturity in full bottle and I think it'll pick up some nice added complexity with age.

This is really quite a compelling Haut Bailly in this difficult vintage, with a complex and maturing bouquet of red and black fruits, woodsmoke, boot polish and cigar tobacco, followed on the palate by a medium-bodied wine with attractively savoury tannins, good acids and nice concentration for the vintage. If you like classic, smoke-tinged Graves then this is for you, but beware that this has none of the sucrosity or impact that many seem to look for in Bordeaux.

Decanted for 1 hour and that was enough. Discreet Red fruits and some earthy, Merlot complexity. Opens to more forest floor and dark cherry. Oak is well done for the lightness. Soft, cherryish fruit with just enough concentration. Very soft tannins and very drinkable. None of the greeness of the vintage, but drink this wine right now, like many of the 2007's!

I kind of like the nose--red berries, chocolate, some oak spice--but you can already detect the problems apparent on the palate. Glossed over with intrusive winemaking, you almost cant see the hollow mid-palate, but there it is all the same. A bit dull.

Merchant tasting Bordeaux 2007. Medium purple. Discrete nose of pine tree, earth, vanilla. Enters the palate with medium body and very good fruit. First wine where the fruit is taking center stage not the oak and acidity. Very classic Pessac aroma with a touch of fumé. Not a great Haut Bailly but very proper for the vintage. Three wines were convincing at the tasting, this was one of them. 3/3.

Weighty, with no trace of ageing at the rim. Nose at the savoury end, some violet and black fruit. Mouth drying tannins, again the savoury, meaty, compost bin elements predominate. Sweet fruit balanced by acidity. Heavy mouthfeel and the tannin finish makes this a bit wearying. Drank over three days, best on day 2 FWIW. Surprised by the difference between this and my last bottle. I'd say keep.

I think the reason I haven't really bothered leaving a tasting note on this wine - despite having several bottles of it over a couple if years - is that it is so boring. Quite a nice nose but totally flat on the palate. Just nothing to be excited about at all here and little length. Nothing is shining through - not enough fruit and not enough backbone either.

4th Oct 2014 Decanted for 30mins. Colour was dark cherry, nose has hints of liquorice and fruit like cherries and blackcurrant. First mouthful evoked memories of a very finely balanced wine, elegance and smooth on the palate with a medium finish.

Appearance: Clear, with deep ruby color core, with garnet rims and legs. Nose: Clean, the nose shows medium (+) intensity aromas of black fruit such as blackcurrant, blackberry and plum, oak notes of vanilla and cedar, pungent spice of liquorice, maturity notes of savory and tobacco, mineral notes of earth. The wine is developing. Palate: Dry with medium acidity, the wine has medium (+) tannin, smooth but still a bit grippy in texture. Medium in alcohol, it has medium (+) body and medium (+) intensity flavors of black fruit such as blackberry and plum, oak notes of vanilla and cedar, MLF notes of cream, maturity notes of savory. The wine has a medium (+) finish. Conclusion: Good quality Pessac-Leognan with a good intense nose showing good complexity on aromas, the wine has a balanced structure though still needing more time for the tannin to dissolve. On the palate it has an equally impressive concentration with reasonable complexity, with a finishing that is really long. Overall a bit vegetal, probably due to the unripe vintage, but it is ready to drink now, and can benefit from further ageing of another 3-5 years.

Light claret. Reticent nose, meat, blackberry fruit/leaf and tea. Entry was clean, light and distinct. Fruitcake, tea and smoke. All rather refined. Complexity developed after 2 hours although the volume probably only dialled up from a 4 to a 6. Really nice balance to this wine. Soft tannins, enough sweet fruit and acidity for food and after but mostly soft, savoury notes. This suits me very well and is to my mind better than a lunchtime claret.

13th Dec 2013 Deep purple colored wine, no legs and a strong hint of youthful fruits. The first mouthful did not disappoint with a very balanced wine and no tannins for such a young wine. It is however a very light wine for Bordeaux. Nonetheless, a very good wine with a medium finish.

Dark purple colour with very little legs and a strong hint of youthful fruits. The first mouthful does not disappoint as it delivers a balanced wine with hardly any tannins for such a young wine. However, very light for a Bordeaux. Nonetheless, a good wine with a medium finish.

30th Nov 2013 This is the second bottle we have opened and the wine remains consistent with the first. Wine was decanted albeit for a short while. It was ready to drink! The colour was a young blood red with few visible legs and only a slight hint of alcohol on the nose which was overwhelmed by the strong aroma of cherries. The first mouthful was very balanced with hints of liquorice and chocolate with a medium finish. In summary, this is a very light wine for a grand cru but very smooth, enjoyable and versatile for any meal.

5th Nov 2013 This is the first bottle of 2 cases purchased during en primeur. Decanted and tasted almost immediately. The resto was dark so the visual was not great but the nose was vibrant and bursting with youthful vigor. The taste did not disappoint as the first mouthful was silky and very balanced with the berries and a little spice at the finish which was medium to full. Glad that I still have more bottles to enjoy over the years.

Pop n'Pour: Deep red. Quite "green" in the nose with hints of cassis and licorice. The taste is dominated by acidity and the wine is quite dry (too much wood for the vintage?) with only little fruit in the back. All a bit short and simple. A bit disapponted by this Grand Cru... I expected more for the price. Better drink the sooner than the later.

Shortly after pulling the cork: nose reticent with earth, peels of plum and some dark cherry notes— altogether blueish rather than red. Lithe body, not overworked with a very pure expression of Cabernet. But it all seems a tad simplistic!
After 45 minutes in a large decanter and then poured into five Bordeaux glasses from Zalto (the best!). Wow, talk about transmutation: added complexity on the nose with notes of raspberry albeit altogether less exuberant than before; the tannin has worked itself into the wine making for a much denser mid-palate and a better carry-through to the finish. Short finish but the the well-judged acidic/ tannic backbone makes the fruit linger on the palate for minutes. Impressive for a 2007!
Ready to drink now with a shortish decant if you don't mind a palate that, for now, is driven more by the corset of acids and tannin rather than the fruit. I'd also serve it a degree or two cooler than you would usually serve a Bordeaux at around 15 degrees Celsius.
Give it three to five more years in the cellar for all components to coalesce: the tannins melting off some more thereby giving freer reign to the fruit and then drink it over the next five to ten years.
At 25 - 30 Euro it's a good QPR if you are not the fruit forward type. At 40 Euro, which seems to be the current ask, there's better.

A weak, watery feeling at first, as if the tastes had puddled somewhere other than where they should. After a few hours in the glass, it got simpler and simpler, but not like a Merlot and more more in a Billy Bob Thornton in Slingblade kind of way. The ending was, uh, stubby. It's a really weird reversal of normal circumstance to make a $44 dollar mistake sober, then question it when drunk.

Académie des Cinquante Bordeaux visit; 9/26/2012-9/29/2012: Good colour; relatively dark notes, black fruit, slight vegetal note; attractive sweetness on the palate, slight edge to the acidity and drying tannins. Delicious aromas but then for me a little disappointing on the palate. I must admit I am more used to bigger wines than this although it was beautifully balanced and definitely medium bodied - but just got a bit lost with a fairly simple roast lamb dish. It was the first bottle I have tried out of the case I have and I'm looking forward to the rest but it's certainly not that memorable.

Nice minerality and cassis stained aroma. Aromatic cedar wood and some dark fruity scents. Fairly Médocian on the nose. The taste falls a bit short of the real hights, lacking some freshness with its tame acidity. A very good effort in the context of the 2007 vintage though.

Mørke bær og Plommer på nesa. Noe uren. Brett. Åpner litt slapt i munn men strammer seg opp med luft. Både syre og tanninstruktur bedres. Frukten kjennes også kjøligere med luft. Likevel forblir strukturen i munn sidrumpa. Solbær dukker opp og hint av tobakk og lær surrer seg fram. Forholdsvis saftig - kirsebærsaftig

A gorgeous nose showing dark cherries, honeysuckle and tobacco with a cool menthol hit at the back end. Vivacious crimson in colour, this has plenty of power on the palate and incredible detail as the meaty, spicy mid palate unfolds. There is also a really interesting crayon, lipstick type chalkiness which I really dug. There is such linear clarity to this wine and the finish is gravelly, clean, long and pleasingly bitter. Of course this med-full bodied wine is tannic, young and chewy in texture. Undoubtedly an excellent effort.

Bordeaux Update (Wine Exchange - Orange, CA): Subtle earth and fruit on the nose with great ripeness for the vintage. The aromas consist of tobacco, currant, and berries. The palate has a smooth mouthfeel with good lift and sweetness to the red currant and berry fruit. The tannins are very supple and the fruit fades slightly on the finish. This is obviously much more restrained and delicate than the other wines in this tasting but it is a wonderful wine to drink today.

UGC 2007 Bordeaux (The Drake, Chicago IL): nose: nice and tart nose of smoke, graphite, red fruits, dark red cherries, and some bits of sour berries. Has a more higher toned aromatic sense to it and a tartness to it
taste: excellent medium/full feel with big tannins right now and tart tones of smoke, red fruits, dark red cherries and some bits of berries and cedar. Good depth, but the tannins are pretty tough right now
overall: This is a nice wine. With a bit of age on it, it could nicely open up and be a real attractive wine. Might not be a long distance runner, but is very enjoyable

Rob's note: 2007 was a revelation after 2006 as the difference in style was v noticeable - much more noticeable fruit, but in a fresh, elegant and with depth. (2006 la parde and 2006 tasted more similar than 2006 and 2007, which felt like different wines)

Garnet colored, medium+ body
Some floral notes, rid licorice, wet wool, raspberry, leather
After a two hour decant there were bitter notes, leather, medium+ finish
Some black cherries, light tannin, mossy. Very soft.
Relatively 'thin' wine. I was expecting more.
By hour three++ the bitterness had dissipated, and it had opened up some. It definitely became more palatable.

Soft tannins, enough sweet fruit and acidity for food and after but mostly soft, savoury notes. This suits me very well and is to my mind better than a lunchtime claret.

Dark purple colour with very little legs and a strong hint of youthful fruits. The first mouthful does not disappoint as it delivers a balanced wine with hardly any tannins for such a young wine. However, very light for a Bordeaux. Nonetheless, a good wine with a medium finish.

This is the second bottle we have opened and the wine remains consistent with the first.

This is the first bottle of 2 cases purchased during en primeur.

4/4/2013 - ledocq Does not like this wine:
A weak, watery feeling at first, as if the tastes had puddled somewhere other than where they should. After a few hours in the glass, it got simpler and simpler, but not like a Merlot and more more in a Billy Bob Thornton in Slingblade kind of way. The ending was, uh, stubby. It's a really weird reversal of normal circumstance to make a $44 dollar mistake sober, then question it when drunk.

Refined nose with earth, spice, vanilla and cassis. Balanced (sweet & savoury notes) and complex mouth with a short length. Slight hollowness in the mid palate. Good stuff drinking now.

Académie des Cinquante Bordeaux visit; 9/26/2012-9/29/2012: Good colour; relatively dark notes, black fruit, slight vegetal note; attractive sweetness on the palate, slight edge to the acidity and drying tannins. Seems to lack the typical delicacy and harmony of Haut-Bailly in this vintage, comes across as slightly overworked.

Nothing wrong withthis wine, but nothing special either. Lightweight, and true to a Graves/Pessac-Leognan character. I doubt that more ageing will benefits this wine.

Mørke bær og Plommer på nesa. Noe uren. Brett. Åpner litt slapt i munn men strammer seg opp med luft. Både syre og tanninstruktur bedres. Frukten kjennes også kjøligere med luft. Likevel forblir strukturen i munn sidrumpa. Solbær dukker opp og hint av tobakk og lær surrer seg fram. Forholdsvis saftig - kirsebærsaftig

This is a textbook classical Pessac wine with beautiful smoky oak, cassis and graphite in the bouquet. On the palate the same impressions together with good fresh acidity and beautifully round tannin. In this early stage I scored 90, with a some potential for one point extra

Bibendum Bordeaux 2010 tasting including selected back vintages (Lords Cricket Ground - St Johns Wood, London): A lot of the producers are showing their 2007s today. Probably to remind us what we are missing, and this is no exception. The green edges are noticable again, but this wine is drinking just nicely right now, and has a good medium finish. Not as complex as say the montrose, but still a nice wine in my mind.

Very pleasant and detailed, easily one of the best bouquets of the night. Very delicate and approachable on the palate with strong acidity and smooth tannins. The flavors consist of floral red fruits supported by good mineral tone. Very nice, this estate is really ratcheting it up.
