2001 Carlisle Two Acres

Community Tasting Notes

Community Tasting Notes (12) Avg Score: 89.3 points

  • 14.8% ABV. Translucent dark garnet in the glass. Complex aromatics that mostly speak of eucalyptus on this particular bottle. Medium full bodied and fully mature with most of its primary fruit flavors faded into the background. Subdued. I'd say drink up.

  • 14.9% ABV. My last bottle of a case purchased on release. Dark garnet translucent in the glass. Complex nose of iron/blood and rare meat that reminds me a bit of Cote Rotie. Medium full bodied with rich red fruit. I'd say this is fully mature. Very good.

  • Medium red color. Nose of dark fruit and eucalyptus. Full, round mouth feel - earthly, with lingering raspberry and toast flavors. Nice balance.

  • Appeared rather cloudy but with good color. A beautiful, nicely balanced wine. I got a lot of brambles and earth, with lighter fruit notes above it (raspberry). Some tasters also picked up coffee or cocoa. The alcohol is noticable, but overall it is well intergrated in a graceful package. Not a blockbuster wine, and not as full bodies as I might have expected, but it was a big hit with everyone who tried it. Stood up well to the dinner bluefish with pesto.

  • ($30) 14.8% ABV. Fragrant and distinctive nose of game and pinon wood. Slightly funky aromas, but the wine is clean. Full bodied, but lighter than some Carlisle offerings in both alcohol and weight. Sappy red fruit. Pretty good. Mona doesn't love it quite like other twoacres she's had, but what can you do. Aging well.

  • Mouth-filling flavors of strawberries with a bit of powdered cocoa on the finish. Not overly complex but very satisfying. A velevety mouth feel. Ample acidity to carry the flavors.

  • Very tasty. Loved the complexity of the nose. Great finish - very Rhone like. Going to be hard to keep the hands off for another year - which is probably what it needs to be fully developed.

  • ($26) Saturated, deep ruby red in the glass. Aromas of spice - pinon and eucalyptus - along with sappy red fruit and cedar. Sweet sappy red fruit on the palate. Concentrated, semi-sweet red candy fruit. Pretty nice. Primarily Mourvedre with Valdepenas and a few other varieties. Rather complex.

  • Not a wine with greqat complexity or depth. With the four varieties in this wine one might expect something unique, but I did not find it particularly interesting. I think there is petite syrah, mouverdre, alicante bouchet and maybe zinfandel or something. I guess the story goes that this 2 acre vinyard was planted many years ago and languished in obscurity as a zinfandel vinyard until Mike figured out that this vinyard had this mix of varities that were all over the vineyard, so it became two acres, the blend. Just lacked the concentration of fruit I was expecting.

I found it seeming like a merlot/petite syrah blend with the nose of fruit and smoke filled forest, an elegant simplicity of mputhfeel on the palate, and a short finish.

  • ($28) 14.8% alcohol. The blend includes Mourvedre, Petite Sirah, Valdepenas, and Alicante Bouschet. 200 Cases produced. Obviously Mourvedre on the nose, with aromas of wax, a bit of eucalyptus, and minerals. Also shows some spice, plum and red berry fruit, and minerals. The palate is rich, and "sweet." While tasty and interesting, this was not the best showing for this blend. Our first sample of the 2001 vintage.

  • A blend of Mourvedre, Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouchet, and Valdepenas, the color was an inky, dark crimson: brilliant and clear. The nose is somewhat reticent showing ripe fruit and some noticeable alcohol. The taste is serious and mouth-filling, with glycerin and layers of fruit and oak with tannins that are not yet resolved, arguing for another year of cellaring. Not as compelling as other Carlisle 2001 offerings, although well made and a pleasant dinner companion, it didn't seem worth the $40 price tag. 86 points. DAY TWO: Things have improved quite a bit. The nose is much fuller with good fruit. Also, the palate is more integrated and interesting with noticable pepper and better layering of flavors. Promoting to 88 and saving my other bottles for one or two years.
