Retail $40. 100% Nebbiolo. Not the most expensive Barolo on the market (although I did see this 2004 online for $135--price gouge much?), but it is a solid effort and has aged quite well thus far. Much more bricking on the rim, with more tertiary notes developing: leather, un-smoked cigar, grilled steak. The fruit is pretty much non-existent at this point, but the acidity is alive and kicking, thank you very much with largely integrated tannins and a lengthy finish. I would not hold onto this all that much longer, however.
As far as I am concerned this wine continues to underperform compared to other Barolos I have tasted. The flavor is not robust, there is no zing even with aeration. My prior purchases of the same vintage have been better, so I am not sure why I am this unhappy.

1st night this was really lean, acidic, tart, austere, so put a cork in it. Day 2 it was a bit better, very focused, high acid, spice, but really nothing that stands out for me.

Ruby red, a bit of brick at the edges. The nose is intoxicating- forest herbs, licorice, mint, red fruit. Medium body, good fruit, but relatively light weight. Very little fine tannin. High acidity. Long finish. This is really gorgeous, mostly for the nose and the ethereal quality rather than power. I don't think this gets much better it strikes me as being at peak.

Well, it has been nearly two and a half years since my last bottle of this wine, and it just keeps getting better. Holy cow. Sure, it is a bit lighter, but that is expected, there is the fruit (dark plum, blackberry), the tartness, a mintiness, and plenty of earth in the glass. The palate is glorious. Sure, it is rather austere, but there is tart, slightly stewed fruit, oodles of acidity, and the finish lasts for quite some time. I have another three bottles, how long to wait? Now that is the question. thedrunkencyclist.com

Right now this 2004 Tortoniano Barolo is near perfect. The color has a bit of a brown overtone to it. The bouquet on opening was pronounced. After decanting and two hours in air the wine was a perfect balance of fruit and tannin. It had a marked Barolo 'zing."

Day 1: I feel like I really missed the boat on this '04 Barolo. With so many high scores(90+), I couldn't fathom why may bottle seemed flawed, flat(lifeless), insipid (lacking fruit) and over the hill (no core or complexity). This is no Italian Stallion sloshing around in my fancy Reidel stemware! More like a lame mule ready for the pasture. Guess I just waited too long to pull the plug!?! Day 2: I'm actually getting more fruit and intensity(alcohol) out of this wine this evening. A dark fruit nose is imminent with black cherry notes and tar and alcohol still evident. It has evidently opened up some overnight to give me some hope to salvage this delicate offering from Piedmont. I'm pleasantly surprised to find that it has opened up some and is showing some promise with an enjoyable palate and a lingering finish of spice and delicate black fruit essence. I will raise my score this evening due to the circumstances (87).

Opened during a lull in Hurricane Harvey here in Houston, fairly translucent with aromas of dark cherry, menthol, earth, and bacon. Yum. Did I mention bacon? On the palate, this has matured nicely since my last bottle: luscious fruit, earth, acidity, elegance. I am far from an expert on the region, and I realize this is a fairly large producer of relatively inexpensive wines from the region, but this is particularly nice. thedrunkencyclist.com

It's been almost five years since I last had this wine. Medium to full body with dry and slightly tart cherry. There is an earthy background that is well integrated. Tannin is a bit more present at this stage as some of the fruit has faded. Still drinking well. Great match with tomato sauce, sausage, and tortellini.

This is a very nice, reasonably priced Barolo. The color was dark red. There was minimal bouquet. The tannins were subdued. There was a strong fruit flavor and after some aeration a reasonable Barolo "zing"

Lovely leathery nose and good balance, fine to drink with no decanting. Not very complex and medium bodied, nonetheless very pleasant -- I got it for $17 a few years back, and excellent value at that. Terrif with roasted tomato and saffron sauce. I don't think this has a long life ahead and is just fine to drink now.

Brick red & fading at the edges. Nose fairly closed except for underbrush. Tannin is ample but smooth enough. Some restrained raspberry and lots of earth, touch of leather. Drying finish. A little better day two. Worked with a hearty eggplant parmesan.

And here we have yet a prime example of how difficult it can be to judge a wine ... My latest note on this one is almost a year old, and was kind of luke warm. Now I'm a lot more positive, and it's difficult to say why. Did it really happen that much during a year or was it me? I don't know, but together with some nice monday Bolognese con Sedani Rigati and a bunch of parmigiano, this one comes alive. Lovely Barolo-notes come like smokesignals out of the glass after just 15 minutes in the decanter: Mentol glue, rowanberries, rosehip, gravel, licorice, tar and herbs. Mouthwise it's quite slender, but does not lack neither punch nor personality. Acidity is very good, and the tarry elements of the wine work very good with the pancetta that is in the Bolognese. The rowanberries get support from cherries and cranberries and it's really good. Sure it has tannins still, but they're not oaky or bitter. If I thought 87-88 a year ago, I'd say 91-ish now. Pleasant surprise.

Nice wine. Expected a bit more from this wine. Clear brick color. Nice and funky nose, dust, wild flowers. Excellent tannins, sour cherry, cranberry and red currant. Good length. Will need to update this as it breathes... Update: the wine did not improve much with over 2 hours of air. Not a re-buy for me as there are better wines for the price.

A nice Barolo, but not much more. It's not particularly dark, but darkish with fruit in the mold of plums and violets rather than cranberries or red wineberries. Acidity is quite alright, there is spice and a whiff of light milk chocolate, but I miss a touch of menthol, a touch of personality, something that makes you reach for the glass again and again. With food the tannins are fine, without food the tannins take a good grip. I think this is a wine where the tannins will outlast the fruit. I'll finish my remaining bottle within a couple of years. 87-88-ish.

Very tight and tannic but opened over 2 hours. Nose was mostly leather and slightest of mint. Entire mouth experience was wrapped in still-young tannins. I totally disagree with other people's rating. This wine is exceptional - it has bright cherry flavors accompanied by balsamic, resin-like notes. What is impressive is the intensity of the flavors - they linger in your mouths for a minute after you swallow. It might not be a full body, thick Barolo, but it is smooth, bright and very, very flavorful. I wish I had bought more bottles...

This is a very drinkable Barolo at a very young age (5 years). Any Barolo that is pleasant in less then 10 years in the bottle is interesting. The flavor is traditional with strong fruit and the barolo "zing". Both oak and tanin are subdued. It appears to be very well priced, especially now in Pennsylvania where it is on sale for about $35.00. This is a great price for a well made Barolo such as this one.
