Coravin fun - Lafon Rochet (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Medium minus intensity of chalky floor, a little damp cellar, sous bois, slightly dried out dark fruits and orange peel, and a tiny smidge of farmyard, a little sweet and peppery spice, biscuit and a little dried flower. Juicy, fleshy, medium minus intensity chalky textured tannins spoor the dried orange peel and black fruits, slight non-intrusive alcohol warmth joins on the finish, tertiary notes present but more in the background. Very pleasant.

Coravin fun - Lafon Rochet (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas initially but grows with time, showing blackcurrant, sweet spice, a little aniseed. After a while it shows cassis, plum and leather in support as well as a little tomato leaf, slight cream and Christmas cake. Changes in the glass to show cedar, very slight caramel as well. In the mouth it's juicy, sweetly fruited then a wash of chalky tannins take over the palate, fruit persists with a little cream, alcohol warmth lends spice, long, finishes, very slightly bitter, savoury. Okay.

From Coravin. Black tea, pretty floral notes, toast, slightly baked black fruits, sweet spice, leather, cedar, earth, slightly meaty. Juicy, fleshy, black and red fruits, earth, leather, medium plus intensity talc textured tannins hand in hand with this. Long, balanced.

Coravin fun - new arrivals: From Coravin. Cedar, pyrazine, baked earth, plums and ripe blackcurrant, earthy, biscuit, soft and muted on the palate, silky tannins with a gritty core, slightly plummy with a baked quality, cork is immaculate. Hmm

The wine is clearly after the peak. Something without vivacity.... still enjoyable, but not with that charming power of other Bordeaux from the same vintage.

Quite a shock going from OR PN to Bordo. Deep earth, and coarse plum, saddle leather on the nose. Leather, spice and rather hard on the palate. Good, but may be on its last legs.

Very dark with virtually no sediment. The wine has good tannins. Mostly slices and black. Austere. Some cedar and wood. Still firm and young. Quite deep and red. I would prefer this wine to be more mature perhaps another five years.

Stored in a cold cellar since release.Cork like iron. Finally chipped out. High fill. Needed to be coaxed out with plenty of air. Cherry with a touch of bitterness. Rather atypical but still enjoyable. Needs strongly flavoured meat.

Stored in cold cellar since release. Perfect fill. Cork broke. Me!. Typical St-Estephe. Full bodied, full flavoured, lacks finesse but enjoyable none the less. Holding well. Drink to 2025

Fully mature, with a complex, secondary nose of tobacco, stone, cigar box, black cherry, earth and spice. Medium bodied, with some rusticity in the tannins, this is at peak, or slightly past showing its best.

On the nose, rancio and slightly oxidized fruit, rather like an amontillado sherry, which is a bit off-putting. The attack is weak and acidic, with fading red fruits, but this is followed up by a very rich and deep middle section, full of mature, jammy redcurrants, with earthiness and power. Quite a good finish too. Overall this is not bad, not a good example of a 1990, nor of Lafon-Rochet, which has improved immeasurably since. It certainly needs finishing now before it completely fades away.

No formal notes, drank with friends after a long day tasting Oregon Pinots down in the valley. Not as good as last bottle, seemed out of balance. Great full nose. On the palate the fruit was mostly gone, and the secondary notes seemed muted: more acidity than body, although there was a nice graphite/iron profile that meshed well with the tannins. As it opened there was a metallic taste on the finish which was clipped..

Slightly corked - there was disagreement about this at the table, and I think it was ago - after 20 years it was smooth, with the slightly tar and leather scent of ageing. Some acidic volatiles that disappeared after 15 minutes, and it sat open for an hour or so before drinking. Not much fruit left. A middle of the road wine and good place to find out about the ageing process.

What a great bottle of wine. Drank over two nights. The fruit is still very much alive. The nose is a wonderfully balanced mix of lush fruit and tightly wound tannic structure. The lushness in the fruit carried through on the palate, and it's still very fresh and clean, definitely doesn't seem like a 20 y.o. bottle. It's voloptuous while at the same time focused. The welll-placed tannins complement the lushness of the fruit: they're tight, but sweet at the same time, and there's some nice fleshiness on the midpalate that counterbalances the tannins nicely. The acidity on the back palate round's it all off. The only thing that prevents this bottle from scoring higher is the finish fades rather quickly. For all the potency on the main attack, it'd be nice to see the finish linger a little longer. However, this is a minor quibble, this is a very nice bottle of wine. Very polished, focused, clean and complex.

From magnum. Youthful clear ruby with little browning at the edges. Fresh, classical claret scents of earth, underbrush, black and blue fruits, graphite. Excellent balance of acid and fruit in a medium-weight package; fine texture with a bit of sweet tannin remaining unresolved. Seems to have 1990 richness without being at all ponderous. "Better than correct," one taster commented. Delicious with our hosts' spring lamb and a side dish of beets, brussels sprouts and lardons.

Robe encore bien profonde, d'apparence peu évoluée. Nez de mûres, très joli fruit en bouche, tanins fondus, velouté, sphérique. Evoque plus un St-Emilion qu'un St-Estèphe, effet du millésime. Encore des années devant.

The initial taste was dry, metallic dirt as discussed below and a really short finish. Left alone, it did begin to fill out and really much more pleasant by the end of dinner. The nose was very nice and classic bdx smells but not musty. not sure if I would buy again, but I don't really know where this bottle was and more air time would have helped.

Decanted for 3.5-4 hours. Stole a taste when we first poured it but it wasn't showing anything but tannins in the mouth. After 4 hours, it definitely opened up but this wine can last for much longer. I think this wine had the best nose of the night. Tobacco, dry herbs, some soy sauce and some nice ripe cherries. Would have gone well with meat. Served last due to its need for decanting. Amazingly young for 17 years of age. I disagree that it's drying out. If you don't decant, it tastes like a metallic dirt but give it some time and it will evolve. The scent still sings from the empty bottle.

A little less concentrated and more austere than the 1996, but a very nice Bordo nonetheless. Barnyard, wet leaves...

Extremely tight cork, tannic and very dry. Good bones but I'm wondering if it is in its last few years. My palate was fatigued by this time.

Occasional tasting group: A mixed set; mostly Bordeaux (blends). (@ PVa): Great wine. Beautiful expressive and mature bouquet with good oak and cassis. Mature in the taste as well, but still powerful soft tannin. Cassis and some sweetness on the palate.
