Deep purple with a hint of bricking at the edges. Very dark fruit on the noise, especially plums, with a hint of tobacco. Medium-plus body with medium acid and medium-low tannins that still had a bit of grip. Lots of leather on the palate with some blackberry and chocolate that came out with time in the glass (this certainly improved with air). Enjoyable enough, but lacking in pizzazz I would like to see at this price point.

Lambert's bottle. Mature nose with rusty sweet cherry fruit and resolved tannins suggests early 2000 California cabernet. Still drinks well, very well, but the wine has peaked.

Trots viss sötfruktighet är detta ett elegant vin som precis börjat får mognadstoner. Skulle utan tvekan klara många år till i källaren. En utmärkt napa som smakar som den ska.

Decanted 45 minutes. Deep ruby red. Notes of raspberry, cherry, cassis with soft tannins, nice finish. Not a particularly complex wine but very satisfying.

A bit of dryness on the palate give the impression this is past peak—but not dead by any means. Quite expressive. On the savory side with leafy can elements on the nose and palate. Nice core of dark cherry fruit. Good. Drink up, won’t get better.

Like butter! Smoky and earthy on the nose at opening, decanted before dinner and the wine evolved to a crisp cherry, raspberry flavor, lots of depth and silky smooth.

A classic Napa cab! Dark purple almost inky red, creamy blue berry, black berry bouquet, big and bold, firm but lush creamy sweet tannins, chocolate, mocha, vanilla, licorice, elegant style, very much like its big brother- Hillside select, but at a fraction of cost and just slightly muddy and chunky in mid-palate (which I fully agree with the review below by John). Balanced, but personally would like to have a touch of more acidity. Nevertheless, This wine can go head-to-head with any Napa cabs, except a few iconics. Well done!

Ruby core with garnet edges. A touch herbal on the nose with some mint, and dark berries. Medium tannins (5.5/10) and medium bodied. Similar on the palate with some spices and oaky notes. Medium bodied. Drink till 2019.

Post Golf Dinner w/Friends: TLV had mentioned that he had never really been impressed by the One Point Five, so it was time to show him why this is worth purchasing and cellaring a bit. Aromas of violets, lavender, red plum and dark berry fruit. Hints of saddle leather and spice box with air. Soft tannins with a wonderful velvety mouthfeel. Flavors of black and red fruits on the palate. Long finish. In a wonderful place right now but will hold for a few years at this level. Drink now-2023.

Slow oxed for 1.5 hours but probably needed a decant. Aromas of dusty berry, dried cherry, blackberry, iron and cassis. Classic Napa Valley nose. Flavors of blackberry, iron, dark cherry, earth and a sour dark fruit note. Think it needs some more air. Will revisit in 2 hours.
Much improved. Fruit is much fuller and carries over to the finish.

Sunday Group: 2006 Napa Cabernets (Our house): Purplish crimson color. Hedonistic and forward, with a mix of blue and black fruit leaping from the glass. Velvety tannins- very much in the same vein as wine D in terms of the texture- along with flavors of blue and black fruit, spice and cocoa. Finishes with length and balance. Begins to show just a bit of heat, but remains very tasty.

Crimson red with a deep and dark ruby core. Some damp forest floor, cassis, light barnyard and bramble notes on the nose. Moderate tannins (7/10) with dark fruits and dark cocoa. Some light truffles and earthy mushrooms. Full bodied and moderate plus to long finish with some light minerality in the finish. Drink till 2021.

Decanted two hours yet still a restrained bottle. Not tannic, just a more restrained vintage I think. Cassis, earthy, smooth, structured, sneaky good wine, but fruit was restrained. Suave but not showy, this wine lined up with other 2006 Napa Cabs I have had in being restrained and less fruit forward.

Cassis, elegant ripe fruit flavored balanced very well with bramble, earthiness. slight hint of "French" damp cellar. A tremendous wine. Drinking very well now with smooth tannins but still has some years to go as well.

Pop and pout, this took a few minutes to open and after an hour was singing. Purple/ruby in color. The nose has cassis, a nice earthy component and some leather. With air, the fruit got more pronounced. A moderate amount of complexity. Nice balance. Slight tannins. Nice finish. In a really great place right now and probably just on the younger side of peak. No hurry but no harm opening now.

Definitely better integrated compared to a few years ago - seems to have life in it yet - tannins not fully resolves, but I like the more mature fruit this bottle offers.

While this Cab has a nose that is muted, this wine has big, bold dark fruit falvor with notes of pepper, licorice and crushed rocks. Really nice structure but the wine is not very expressive, almost drinking like an old world Bordeaux. Having said all that, this is still an excellent Cab but not for the fruit forward, concentrated, new world crowd.

Tasted single blind. Tasted several times over 3-4 hours. I called this stripped overall but there were some interesting briny, savory and pepper notes. Little fruit character and limited finish. It was my entry into a blind tasting and was a let down. Purchased on release and stored in a wine chiller.

Popped & poured. Deep color with a knock out bouquet featuring violets, rose petals, black currants, cassis and plums. Full-bodied with fine-grained, sweet tannins and flavors of licorice, graphite, black currants, cassis and rose water. Long finish. Very well-balanced across the palate. Drink now-2024.

Great nose that wafts and fills the room on the initial pouring; purple with a nose of dark fruits, forest floor, mushroom and hints of coffee. Integrated but not quite silky tannins, full body without quite enough full tastes. This very good wine finishes long, good acidity, just not quite the wow factor Ive experienced with other vintages of One Point Five.

I think we would score a bit lower than others on this one. Still a lot of nice dark fruit and time has smoothed out any rough edges. But we're picking up a fair amount of funk (brett?) that is somewhat off-putting.

Big nose of Framboise, blackberries and black cherries. The palate has precision and focus with ripe black fruits controlling all else; I get currant, pomegranate and blackberries. Hints of soy, cardamom, worn leather and violets show themselves nicely and the balance is near spot on with tannins resolving nicely. Some mid-palate plushness and the finish goes long and all the fruits remain in play for many a moment. My final and best showing of three. You can always to cound on Shafer to deliver the goods.

Finished the last of my 6 bottles of the 2006 one point five. Wine really opened up after about an hour with great black and some red fruits. Tannins are delicate and a very approachable wine. My impatience has done me no favors here.

Cedar notes and rich dark fruit on the nose with some wet, organic forest floor notes as well. The front and mid palate is not fruit heavy but is rich with the aromatics of exotic wood with definite dryness, but still both soft and floral too. The finish is mIld and moderate in length with dry dusty tannins. Could have kept it several more years.

Deep, midnight purple. Guarded nose but developed notes of cassis, black currants, blackberry, and a peppery spice after a two hour decant. Secondary notes of mushrooms, licorice, mocha, crushed rocks, and leather.
Bold, full bodied, and dry, with a flashy array of black fruit, fine acidity, and firm tannins. Cigar box, graphite, black cherry, French roast coffee, Asian spices, and an irony back note that continues through the intense, granite-laden finish. Youthful, powerful, and exuberant, but with a classical streak. Approachable now but could gain more complexity and power if given time to mature. Decant.
Paired with grilled flank steak, oven-roasted fingerling potatoes, and Morrel mushroom crostini.

Popped, decanted for 1.5 hours and then ate with grilled burgers. Disappointing. Nose didn't proct much fruit...had a green streak and some pencil lead tones. Blah on the palate, too. Disjointed. Not enough fruit. Was outshined by a Buehler Papa's Knoll Cab, and it wasn't close.

I like the direction this has gone in. Dense, chewy with enough depth and richness to carry it. Nose is spot on for this with black fruits ruling. Black cherry, cassis, framboise and more. I get some cola, and some un-cola. :) Ok, that's a stretch, but the rest is the real deal; Palate brings some purity, structure and a hint of elegance is starting to pop on this. Black fruits with black-cherry and framboise leading the charge. Theres some black plum pumice, cedar and slight lead pencil shavings here. Balance is very admirable and tannings still somewhat chewy. Finish remains true to all before it. Can't go wrong with this one. Wish I could give it a Ninety ONE POINT FIVE.

Tasted over 2 days, these are impressions more than formal notes. Very classic and solid Cali Cabernet. Throwing tons of sediment so decant this. Very enjoyable as the fruit shines in harmony with fine tannins, and ample acidity. Lacks the development yet to show secondary charectistics, but with 2-3 more years, this will be very good.

Very solid cabernet. Flavors of plum and spice are deep and rich. This went very weill with a stuffed pork roast on NYE and was enjoyed by all. A slight softness keep this from getting a better score in my mind, but this is a very nice wine.

From a 375ml bottle purchased at a restaurant. Notes of plum, currant, leather and earth. Not quite as bold as I expected, and the 14.9% abv did poke its head through. Took a little while to open up, but when it did, it was balanced with moderate acidity and tannins complementing the flavors.

No time to decant, started very tight and green tones and strong tannins dominated the wine. Two hours later the wine had done a 180. Medium to full bodied, rich dark fruit, tanned leather, oak, and a touch of minerality, and smooth tannins that left you with a wonderful minute+ finish. This is a MUST decant, once it opened I was amazed at the depth of the wine. Previous notes spoke about this being a disappointment to Hillside, $150 difference. Of course it isn't in the same league, but I would put this as an equal to Caymus and Silver Oak (that would be a fun blind).

Tastes almost like a Shiraz-Cab, and it's a bit prosaic for a Shafer. Decent blackberry fruit and some mocha from heavy oaking, but it's not showing the pure varietal currant or the depth that I'd expect from a top producer at this price. Almost syrupy-hot in the mouth, too. In short, it's tasty but flawed and, in my view, doesn't have a lot of character.

I have always liked this baby Hillside Select. Deep purple in color....it features flavors of blueberry and a little fig. I am more impressed with the pencil lead and leather flavors. It has just enough structure to get your attention. This is a great bottle of wine but is a little overpriced. If this was in the $25 range I would buy it by the case....at $60 if feels like I'm being taken advantage of....cheers.

Popped and poured. Medium-plus purple/ruby, pretty. Mild aromas of dark fruits, black currant, herbs, cedar, and a touch of smoke from oak. Medium to medium-plus body, elegant mouthfeel. On the palate, this wine certainly possesses a solid core of dark fruits but also shows the the earthier side of Napa, with notes of dried herbs, tobacco leaf, and hints of spice from the oak. Nice, moderate level of acidity keeps this refreshing. Tannins are a bit astringent but surprisingly accessible for a 2006, and help to carry the fruit through on the moderate finish. While this isn't special or profound in any particular way, it is charmingly reminiscent of an earlier winemaking style in Napa, with less extraction and more emphasis on terrior. Should continue to age nicely for at least 5 years, perhaps even longer.

Napa Cabernet (Waterford Wine Co., Milwaukee): 375ml. nose shows much meatier than the 2007 out of 750ml. waxier fruit in the nose. more prominent acid than the 07. palate here references it's oak, but obviously more in tune. all the same, 07 has a more age worthy structure.

Dark, blackcurrant fruit and coffee. Nicely concentrated on the palate and wears its 14.9% alcohol well. Soft tannins but a touch of biting acidity on the back end could use some time to round out. Clean fruit on the finish. Very enjoyable

Some controversy lately prompted me to open this up probably a few months earlier than I would have. Darkish hued wine. Lots of dark cassis on the nose. Unfortunately I get the brett mentioned elsewhere--just a hint mind you. Not deal breaking but sure enough there. Some masked pure black fruits are in there: some currant, blackest plum, blackberries and anise and a wee bit of kirschy notes. A hint of cola and some leather. A pretty blowsy medium weight profile. The tannins are chewy and somewhat unstructured at this moment and the balance somewhat disjointed. The finish is very admirable indeed: long and clean. Certainly not in the place it was a year ago,but my hope is still in place for this to rise and shine. 89 for today, 91 is the promise. Lets call it 90.

NC Cindy tasting. Decanted for about 1.5 hours. Good dark color. On the nose, cherry and red fruit base, beautifully layered with vanilla, smoke, earth and dust. On the palate, this was quite tannic but still extremely smooth. The flavors of smoke, dust, and earth continued on the palate over a base of black fruits and truffles. The overall effect was of a dark and brooding wine that may well show more of itself with more cellar time. I'd say this wine was consumed about three years too young. At the $70+ initial asking price, you'll get your money's worth. At $50 and under, this is a good buy.
For me, this was second among the five California wines tasted at this event.

A few hours in the decanter brought out some of the fruit but this was somewhat masked by a slight tainted flavor. The taint was also detected on the nose upon first opening but blew off after about 20 minutes.

Decanted 2 hours. 'Big' cabernet fruits on nose, with mocha, vanilla and a touch of tar/licorice. Palate enters with fleshy, expansive fruit but is met by little acidity and a low level of tannins that are nevertheless a bit stern - tempered by food. Medium rich texture. Pleasing flavors of medium length. Low complexity and finesse. Very nice with grilled filets - look forward to this pairing again.

Nose of blackcurrant, cocoa, black olives and some oak notes. Kind of a loamy earth type of thing. Lots of wood on the palate. Rich black fruit flavors. There is nice acidity to balance out the young grippy tannins. Getting some of that astringency of fresh blackcurrants. Long, herbal (in a good way) finish.

Trip to Napa/Sonoma; 11/7/2009-11/14/2009 (Napa/Sonoma): Shy charcoal and mocha nose, with a little currant and cassis. Palate with subdued fruit with cassis and currants, with chewy chalky tannin that were dusty and slightly drying. This sweetened with time in the glass. Finish was clipped, short and rather simple with coffee notes. Disappointing complexity for the price, I remember previous vintages being better. Certainly a horrible QPR given the $70 price tag. Maybe needs time? (Rachael loved it)

Napa Valley Vintners Association (Fleming's Steak House): nose: big, bold, and rich nose of red cherries, sour cranberries, and red and black currants, and some hi-toned red fruits. Extremely pungent and powerful at the same time, almost like a wild animal right now
taste: Full bodied with rich tannins and deep tones of red and black currants, red fruits, dark red cherries, sour cranberries and some bits of cedary oak round it all out. Not as big on the palate as the nose, but still very young
overall: Needs some time to calm down. This could really turn into something with a slight bit of age on it. Great full body and a pungent nose already, this needs a good decant at this time to really get giong

This seems more gamey and wtihdrawn then the Relentless. Also shows the switch of varietal from the Merlot (which one would expected). So what I am saying is reveals some typical cabness to it. A core of iron and mineral. A focused denseness. Needs some time in the bottle I would believe. Now, I happen to also be drinking a bottle of 2003 Hobo Russian River Cabernet. It is very intersting how the two flesh out with one another. The Hobo is pure, refreshing, and highly aromatic.

Blind tasting at home: Very dark red with almost extreme tannins (I like tannins). I don't know that I have ever tasted such strong tannins. I don't remember the 05 having as much tannin as this. Surely this will allow it to age for many years. A very fruity cassis and berry nose makes it noticably a cabernet. Very full bodied too. I will retaste a day later. I had thought it would score a little higher so will see the second rating after further decanting.

Tasting at Shafer: Shafer just happened to be bottling the 2006 the day of our visit, so we got to taste from a newly filled bottle, poured by Elias himself. Inky garnet color. Aromas of spice, licorice, plums and cassis. The tannins are dense and chewy yet the wine retains a silky, elegant texture. Flaors of black currants, plum, black cherries and savory herbs. The finish is long, with spicy oak tones. 93-94+.

Well done!

Much improved. Fruit is much fuller and carries over to the finish.

Begins to show just a bit of heat, but remains very tasty.

Ok, that's a stretch, but the rest is the real deal; Palate brings some purity, structure and a hint of elegance is starting to pop on this.

I've liked this wine before, but for some reason not this bottle. Perhaps because I've tasted it alone before. On this occassion, it followed a Kapcscandy and a Cakebread. It did not measure up to the Kapscandy.

(Rachael loved it)

taste: Full bodied with rich tannins and deep tones of red and black currants, red fruits, dark red cherries, sour cranberries and some bits of cedary oak round it all out.

Aromas of spice, licorice, plums and cassis. The tannins are dense and chewy yet the wine retains a silky, elegant texture. Flaors of black currants, plum, black cherries and savory herbs. The finish is long, with spicy oak tones. 93-94+.
