During a GE/AUT blind tasting. We had the 1996, 2005 and 2007 in a flight next to each other. All of them showed really well. The 1996 had the most complex tertiary nose with lots of Lychee aromas, the 2005 was the richest, with lots of layers of lemon and yellow fruit and the 2007 the lightest with the most precision. It was really a matter of taste which one you liked the most. I scored all of them 95-96. Spätlese at its best.

- Blind, GE/AUT tasting - Three Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese were served.
1996: - floral, quince, honey but so lean and simply elegant and so complex but still precise. Has enough fullness and sweetness but balanced with a great acidity. Probably one of the best white wines I have drunk so far. - 96p
2005: - Riper and more quince and honey, more body and beautiful stony flavours. Compared to the other two, the most intense Prüm. - 95p
2007: - Aroma profile similar to the other two but leanest and most precise. - 94p

Noticeably more honey and candied fruit on the nose than normal for this bottling - although lovely aromatics… usual petrol but plenty of white flowers too. Noticeably richer than expected with a heavy oiliness. Lacks real flavour definition and relatively fat for this rendition. I think it could use a touch more acidity/freshness but really needs another 5yrs. Nowhere near as ready as the lovely 2005 (and 2006). Will try the 2003 soon to compare. 92pts now, but could be better after 2028

A bit denser yellow than a bottle 2 years ago. Open from the get-go with forward nose of lemon, peach, apple. Rich, ripe fruit, some minerality. Like the last bottle, more on the lush than crisp side for Prum but still excellent balancing acidity. Medium-long finish. In its wheelhouse now and likely to remain there for many years to come. Excellent.

Hmm last 750 of 3 from Garagiste 15 years ago, wish I’d bought more. Just gently settling into early middle age, still primary but less in-your-face about it than 10 years ago. Beautiful straw-gold color, nose not all that expressive but white fruit and flowers for sure. Lovely balanced acidity, some slate but not a lot, more white peaches and a hint of citrus (there was more a while back).

To my taste, this showing a pretty ideal balance between secondary and tertiary characteristics . The fruit is undeniably lush and veers towards the tropical (pineapple) end of the spectrum, with significant residual sugar and not so much upfront slatiness. But there is very nice blackberry note and a (thin) vein of acidity lurking about in the background. Beyond that, the wine just has a very good sense of poise. Not my favorite vintage, but a solid effort given what they had to work with imho. I’d say it’s best when paired with food that’s tart or tangy or salty or sharp.

Wow! I've not had the chance to taste a Riesling this old again, but this one was picked out by the instructor of a class on Rieslings from around the world, and everyone agreed it was a great choice.
For Jessie, what jumped out was a big whiff of coconut. Then marmalade and honey and marzipan and dill -- I wouldn't have guessed this was Riesling. Ripe tropical flavors, including banana, on the palate. ~30 g/L RS. Great stuff!
I'm going to buy some of this and stash it away in my cellar for sure. I hope when it ages it's as good as this.

Medium yellow in color. Was initially very funky on the nose, but over 20 mins it blew off to reveal lots of floral and herbal aromas, lemon curd, hint of orchard pit fruits and petrol and minerals. The palate shows perfectly off-dry custardy yellow citrus, good acidity and along floral and mineral tinged finish.

AP 24 - Revisited this after several years - still has the positive quality I saw in 2016, still very delicious and has mellowed in the intervening years. Still expect further positive evolution.

Not as elegant as the auslese. But this half bottle was flat out delicious. Light to medium gold color. Hard to believe this is 15 years old. Has sufficient acidity for half bottles to continue aging well 2+ years. Full bottles to 2027, at least.

Really a lovely wine - good depth and balance, nice sweetness, a hint of dill and a stronger bit of citrus minerality. Remarkably, it paired extremely well with barbecued habanero honey pork ribs.

2019 Visit to North Canterbury, NZ: Served as a replacement by Marcel to match the delicious home-made white truffle icecream and strudel. A lovely wine showing flinty, smoky reduction with lemon, peach and yellow apples. No terpene character. A clean and pure mouth. Mineral with rock melon, pineapple and a touch of honey. Drinking well on the night, matching the savouriness of the dessert.

Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Light yellow. Forward fulsome nose of lemon, peach, apple. I’m not getting any petrol or reduction. Rich, ripe fruit with some minerality - not pronounced. A bit more on the lush than crisp side for Prum but still excellent balancing acidity. Medium-long finish keeps me coming back for more. Drinking very well now and should continue to do so for another decade or more. Excellent-Outstanding.

Medium gold color. Drank a couple glasses over Thanksgiving dinner. This has a great fruit profile, ripe apple with nice tropical fruits layered in, pineapple, mango, and peach, medium plus bodied, oily texture, rich and tart, and nicely sweet with good acidity, slate and light fusil notes and good length.

Very disappointing, overly sweet without any complexity. Tasted like a supermarket 10$ sweet riesling...not what i expected from such a famous producer
Delicious if not sweet for a Spatlese; thinking this must have been what old auslese tasted like. Opened at fridge temp, poured out glass, and let the bottle warm up for a few hours. Wine was perfect just slightly below room temp and is drinking well if not young. Lots of fruit but enough acidity to balance. Was expecting but didn't get any petrol. I'd say it's just entering it's very long drinking window but can cellar for at least 10 more years.

Expressive nose of lemon, apricot, white flowers and mineral, as always great nose with JJ Prum. Unctuous mid palate with good acidity. A bit sweeter than the 2004 which I preferred.
Excellent Spätlese from a prime vineyard from a terrific producer from a very good year. You can't go wrong with this combinaton and the 07 Wehlener Sonnenuhr did not let me down: Amazing (ripe) fruit, nicely dialed-in petrol notes, fabulous acidity and what a finish. Spectacular.
Dinner at The Peranakan. Straw gold. Ripe fruit with residual sweetness, but never felt heavy and kept well balanced by fresh acidity. 13 years old but tasted quite young. Went well with spicy Peranakan food.

Prototypical Prum nose: tons of petrol with lovely white fruit and minerals. This was a bit flat compared to the bright and energetic 2018 Prum Kab I just popped, but still, it was a great showing. Loved the interplay between the bright acidity, sweetness, and fruit. Still drinking pretty young after 13 years, but that's not all too surprising.
Glad I have a few left-- will hold off for quite some time.

What passes for a Labour Day hangout these days (Chicago, IL): Absolutely brilliant -- this is quintessential Prüm. Slightly reductive on the nose, followed by a ripe sweetness that is perfectly balanced by the acidity. This is light on its feet, packed with minerality and fruit, and really exemplifies the house style. The vintage gives this an extra dose of ripeness, but it never overwhelms the wine.

Pretty feminine nose of flowers, peaches, stone fruits, mild petrol. Sweetness of a spatlese with min acidity. Felt like it was in an in between stage, still too young or needs more time? Enjoyed, but not a stunner.

Coravin. Light golden; medium high intensity, pear, slight petrol, slight lime; palate is medium bodied, richly textured, medium acidity in the background, integrated fruit but fades a bit through the midpalate, slight petrol; medium length finish. My last bottle was almost 4 years ago, and my critiques at the time include a slightly short palate and a need for a touch more acidity, and both are still true. I think it has lost just a touch of its youthful vigor, though it has made up for it a bit with its textural richness and depth. 90 Update: On retaste, I think it's lost more than it's gained with age. Perhaps this is an intermediate stage, but this was better younger.

Monthly Tasting Group: Rieslings (Ngon Bistro, St. Paul, MN): Ultra pale color, almost clear. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. Apple, pineapple, peach, citrus, with lime blossoms on a really well balanced frame of acid, stone and tart fruits. The fusil is fading and this is really working. 92+ to 93pts.

Leaky, with a messed up cork. This was far more developed than my last bottle, exhibiting a fairly dark gold color. The development, I suspect, may have helped a lot: while still ripe, with lots of pastry cream, this one exhibited better integration and better balance. Gives me hope for the bottles with intact corks.

From a 375ml. Nose: Ripe peaches with apples, and some trace honeyed notes. Palate: Very honeyed with ripe apple and peach. Great viscosity levels. Still going strong since last notes (on 4/1/14). 91+ points.

Served double blind. Brief note. Guessed Alsatian riesling. The cold temp this was served at subdued the sugar content. Nose and palate are in good alignment showing passionfruit, mango puree, peaches, bosc pear, honeyed tangerines and laser flinty minerals. Touch of wet concrete and petrol too. Midpalate is lush yet weightless with racy acid reaching every corner of your mouth. Long finish is a kaleidoscope of tropical fruits that keeps bouncing around from one to the next. Really nice and in a good drinking window.

From 375, in Riedel O stems at a dim sum restaurant. Extremely peachy, with some coconut notes on the finish. Round and pleasant with the food, but not something I'd look to drink on its own. Overall, it tasted like "reasonably good Riesling" with no real character beyond that to indicate the great vineyard or producer. I would have liked more acidity as well. No objections to it, and I enjoyed sipping it with dumplings, especially with chili sauce, but had hoped for a bit more, despite the vintage. Maybe it's in a dumb phase and needs more time, even from half bottle.

Transparent og nydelig nese. Den typiske hvite frukten og hvite blomstene til Prüm kombinert med mer moden, gul frukt og et hint av honning. Tydelig Moseltypisk mineralpreg. Ingen utvikling, men perfekt integrerte aromaer nå. Juicy frukt i munn. Lett som en fjær og subtil. Integrert syre.

This seems to be just starting to relax for it's secondary phase. Sugar is still giving weight and body but it seems to be fading into the background a tiny bit. Lovely fruit with a solid petrol note upon opening. No sign of sulfur. Maybe a wee bit more acid is called for. A very nice Spat that likely has it's best days ahead of it. Good now but should be an easy long term aging candidate for those that prefer it so.

Medium yellow tint. Citrus, baby powder, and early petrol. Light weight, moderate sugar, well chiseled, delicate flavors of lime and ripe apple backed up by slate. Superb showing.

Showing few signs of development, and still with way too much undigested sugar. There's clearly some acid underneath, and presumably the rest of the Mosel panoply, but right now it's all hidden behind a sort of pastry cream sensation. My recommendation would be to bury remaining bottles for a long while.
Medium straw to lighter golden color. Needs a few minutes to open up but then very complex and pretty aromatics of apricot, peach, flowery notes, mint, freshly cut apples, but also a lot of minerality (slate) and some lemon oil. It's lighter+ bodied with beautiful persistence and medium-high acidity as well as perfectly integrated sweetness. Excellent length. This still feels really young at age 10 and the first hint of tertiary notes like petroleum are just sneaking in. A textbook Spätlese from this great microclimate and excellent producer.

Complex nose of yellow flowers, peach, river rocks, and petrol. Dull on the palate due to 8% alcohol and high residual sweetness, but that is the German style; why, I will never understand.

Beautiful, still developing Mosel Riesling. Light and just a hint sweet. Perfectly balanced and delicious. Tasted with a 2004 Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan Deidesheimer Leinhohle Riesling Auslese that just blew it away though...

Very good but in a slightly softer, more feminine, style than I anticipated. The only real hint of age is some petrol on the nose. Initially this had a predominant note of baked apple pie, but with time, it became progressively more infused with Rainier Cherry and cream notes, which are nicely balanced by a fair degree of acid. A complex wine with constantly shifting flavors and it comes across much more fruity than sweet. This is fine to drink now, but I think this concentration of fruit, acid and a bit of sugar with ensure a long life.

Drank this in Queens NY with Thai food. We had a little cork problem, so there were small pieces floating around in the glass. This was sweet, but not hit you over the head sweet. Nice yellow color. This is still young. If I may quote my friend, this had power under the hood.

A lovely and expressive bouquet of petrol, preserved lemon, apple, flinty reduction and white flowers soars from the glass, followed by quite a powerful, youthful palate impression defined by crisp acids and slate minerality. While this is positively exuberant already it will be even better in another five or so years.

Pretty young yet. Big, mouth filling wine that needs years to loose the fat, but the acidity was conspicuously on the downside. Not sure where this will end up, but it needs time to get there. The beeswax note is super accurate.

-- popped and poured -- -- tasted non-blind over a few hours --
NOSE: moderately expressive; medium petrol note; hint of raspberry; typical Prum W-S nose.
BODY: no spritz; pale yellow color; medium bodied.
TASTE: seems to present as a proper Spatlese; 8.5% alc. not noticeable; medium acidity; fruit flavors of gala apple, pear; and green grapes; strong mineral aspect o nthe finish, which is long and of moderate intensity; background hint of raspberry; seems a bit hollow on the mid-palate – maybe at an awkward age right now?; firmly beyond infancy. Hold.

Rich clear golden color. A classic off dry wine from a classic producer. A near perfect balance of fruit & acidity here. This has an initial richness which reflects in the texture as much as any taste or flavor. The palate is coated with radiant fruit accented with a verbena-like herbal/tea note.
Wonderful finesse to match the power. Those herbal nuances emerge after some time open and as the chill recedes. Prum wines are truly among the best in the world and this one certainly doesn't disappoint.

Dinner at Home (Fremont, CA): Medium-deep golden color; riper fruit nose with white fruit, less minerality but still some slate, less obvious petrol but balanced; palate has some residual sugar but doesn't taste as obviously sweet as I expected, has perhaps as much or more acid than the kabinett, high acid, flavors persist better through the midpalate; finish is medium-long length. Wow. What a simply great bottle of wine. Full, rich, plenty of taste, just enough sugar to provide some background sweetness. I suspect that this will be even better in a few years, and I have three more, so there is a chance one of them will survive. Usually, when I open a good bottle, I finish it in one sitting/evening. This was so good (and so rich) that I drank it over 3 days. I just wanted to prolong the pleasure. Wow.

Coravin 7/24/15: Light green-golden color; lovely nose with petrol, peach, stone fruit, lime; palate is excellent with tart stone fruit, racy vibrant effervescent acidity, off-dry, but fruit flavors fade a bit by the midpalate; finish is medium length, clean acidity. About 2.5 years since my last bottle, this has integrated well, much less reduction and sulfur, and a great food wine, held back only by the length on the palate. 91 7/26/15: Unchanged. The palate still falls off quickly, which really holds this wine back. Enjoyable nevertheless. 90-91. 90 today.

The balance, depth, complexity and at the same time sheer weightlessness of this wine is astounding. It`s a refreshing treat alone, but it also easily stands up to complex food pairing jobs if asked. It deserves many many more years in the cellar, but it`s hard to leave these alone when they`re this good now.

Thanksgiving Dinner Wines (Our House): Light gold color. PnP, drank 2 glasses with dinner. Beautiful wine, fresh cut flowers on the nose, filled with bright fruit: tangerines, lemon, peach, tropicals; minerals, and just a hint of petrol rounds things out. Very classic Mosel off-dry spätlese. I was hoping for a bit more complexity, though, so I think I'll hold on to my remaining bottles for a while. I bought this directly from the weingut in October 2011 and this was the youngest vintage in the tasting there so I think I can wait with confidence.
Straw yellow colour. Open, opulent and slightly developed nose. Meadow flowers, apple and some peach / nectarine as well. A touch of petrol. The mouthfeel is rich due to the residual sugar. Despite that this wine leaves a very fresh and light sensation in the mouth, so has to be quite a lot of acidity even though it's not very evident. Apple and peach here as well.

Liked this a lot. A lovely mix of orchard fruits, white flowers, honey, slatey minerals and a very faint hint of sulphur. Acidity is decent, but the real strength of this wine is it's beautiful silky palate which is lithe, weightless and balanced. Very good length and focus.

Disappointing, simple, not very complex. Not enough acidity to balance the slight sweetness. I'm hoping this bottle wasn't quite right. Opened 30 minutes prior to tasting. Opened as part of a Prum night along with 3 other '07 JJ Prum rieslings. My favorite of the night. Beautiful light florals, delicate but intense apple/pear fruits, great minerality appearing on the mid palate, and a delicious honey laced finish. Sulfur was evident, a bit more subdued than previous tastings. Satiny and weightless with excellent penetration of flavors. This could use a touch more acidity to balance the sweetness (as could the other '07's) but this has great focus and definition. Lovely stuff.

Delicious as always. Deeper flavors than previous, adding a notch in my rating. Only thing holding this back from a still higher rating is lack of slightly higher acidity to totally balance the sweetness. Love it. (Doris 91. Steve and Susan - wonderful wine)

On pop and pour this smells like a newly paved road but w/ no other components showing up in the aroma. Palate is also displaying strong petrol but showing some orange and lime as well. Good acidity. With air the petrol subsides allowing the citrus fruits to emerge on the nose and palate. Decant this for a good hour or two to allow this to open up.

Purchased (4) of these so we could try one early. Enjoyed with spicy Thai food. The balance between the fruit (peaches, green apples, and lime) and the bright structure make this a great spciy food pairing. The low 8.5% alcohol is a nice bonus as well.

Apricots, honey, floral and peach on the nose. The palate is thick and shows a beautiful streak of acidity along with honey, baked apples, peach and floral notes. Not a lot of minerality. Medium finish and drinking well now but I will hold the rest of these for at least five years.

Tons of sulfur on the nose initially, which persisted after a couple of days in the fridge, when the rest of this note was written. Besides the sulfur, some honeyed tropical fruit aromas. Apple, mango, and minerals on the palate. Fairly delicate and elegant. Balanced acidity and a long guava, mineral, and citrus finish. Definitely decant for a while if drinking now or hold for several years. I think with some time in the bottle, my score would improve.

Petrol, petrol, petrol on the nose. The sweetness and the acidity are in great balance. Nice on its own, really nice with sausage, as it was meant to be.

Beautiful satiny texture. Very clean and neat, building to a deliciously powerful yet nearly weightless medium length finish. Fairly strong sulfar aroma and flavor detracts but stops short of overwhelming. Hold or long decant.

Good wine from this amazing reisling village, but one where the sugars were too high and did not marry with the acidity. A lot of fun, but not in balance. The color was a deep straw / ripe pear color suggesting that the wine might also be perhaps a bit riper. And it was! The sugars almost had a honey like sweetness which reminds more of ethiopian wines and not something i expect to find in a mosel reisling. This despite the fact that the wine has great acidity. Mild aromas of slate and quince, and slate and acidity is what hit the tip of the tongue before plush fruit emerged to overtake the experience. Ripe pears and a honey aftertaste dominate the fruit palette. To me, the length did feel a bit short and the wine sort of fell off a bit after mid palette. I paired it with sharp cheddar and the acidity of the riesling was great to cut through the cheddar fat while not being overdone with its sharpness. Good fun stuff. At $25 would definiteoly recommend.

Cork was dry and fell apart but wine was in good shape. Slight acidity and could have used a little more. Not quite balanced enough to offset the sweet, but a very delightful wine nonetheless. Good nose and palate, citrus, tropical fruits, hint of mineral. (Doris, 91). A steal at the price ($22)

Sitting on several of these from the JJB sale and couldn't resist checking in on one. Pale straw color. Sweet tropical fruit & floral nose. Not detecting any sulfur. Palate is sweet, with sugar cane, macerated pears, nectarines, transitions through a steely/petrol flavor on the midpalate, and finishes very long with tropical fruits lingering with minerals. The wine seems perfectly in balance with just enough acidity, although we found it a bit sweet for the spicy Thai food pairing.

Decanted for 4 hours prior to drinking. There was some sulphur lingering on the nose with a melange of tropical fruits. The palate was sweet up front, but with tons of structure and acid in the mid-palate and finish to keep the underlying sweetness in balance.

Petrol notes on the nose. Still shows very young on the palate with a bit of spritz. But wow this is going to be a great wine in a few (or many years).

Such a tragedy, had such high hopes for this little bastard. Cork had molded and busted, and seeing as I'd opened it in Thailand, wasn't about to schlep it back to Brooklyn in luggage. Sigh. I'd never had a Riesling that tasted like asphalt. FAIL.

NOSE: pear; white orchard fruits; floral; hint of petrol; unusually intense and complex.
BODY: medium bodied.
TASTE: wonderful flavors - underripe pluot, a bit white sugary, but not as much as I would have expected from a Spat. of such tender age; a hint of background diesel; very nicely balanced; this young WS has incredible focus, and drives forward with an intense purposeful determination. Probably the best WS Spat. I’ve yet to taste — give this some time in the cellar and the sky is its limit.
Gut impression score: 95 - 97

SIMPLY WINES - The 1st Outing (Asia Grand @ Odeon Tower): Alcohol :: 8.5% Light straw yellow. Aromatic nose display yellow floral with ripe banana, peaches and apricot with touch of mineral. Rich and opulent palate with ripe tropical fruits that the fleshy body support by medium level acidity with some what disjointed, light sweet finishing. This bottle has again, re-assured that JJP is not a wine to be drunk young. Far from ready, maybe another 10yrs? Buy - No.

Not in my inventory, but the bottle was definitely in my vault. I like when that happens. The wine is now harmonizing and melting into a most savory whole, Rich more than sweet, very Mosel in its flowery fruit, nice acids. Not exactly ready but much tastier than a a year ago with better things to follow.

Deutschland (Wine Exchange - Orange, CA): The seductive delicacy turns up here as well but the character is strikingly different from the Graacher. The aromas are more mineral driven and stunningly unique with notes of slate, rubber, musky flowers, and stone fruits. As expected the palate offers amazing texture to the ultra dense flavors of melon, stalk, and stone fruits. The minerality is even more pronounced with supporting acidity that provides gorgeous balance throughout. On point and slightly more brilliant than the Graacher because of the mineral character.

Some petrol on the nose that lingers. Notes of honey and stones behind it. The palate is unctuous and full of honey, some lichee and pineapple. (first time I get pineapple in a Prum. ) Great acid and clean, crisp finish.

Apples and apricots and maybe some rocks. While not cloying, the aroma did suggest a sweeter Spatlese. The nose was relatively unexciting so I was pleasantly surprised when the palate displayed good balance as well as distinct layers of flavor with clear transitions. Pine needles and an herby mintiness on the attack yielded to a mid-palate of nectarines, and the finish had a nice dose of minerality. Fresh apple cider ran throughout the layers and mushy apples accompanied the minerals on the finish. The apple flavor was pleasant but it muted the flavors within each layer instead of interacting with them in a synergistic way. I really wanted the flavors to be bolder. I have another bottle to try but I don't know if this wine will ever reach the next level. Thick mouth feel. Not a screaming value and I was hoping for a little more.

Blind OLD WORLD GRAB BAG - Dino Restaurant (Washington, DC): Funky floral, gasoline/petrol nose, with a little citrus. On the palate there was candied citrus and floral, but was really fat IMO. Alsace was my guess. Improved throughout the night, but that was after the notes were finished.

Old World Grab Bag (Dino Restaurant, Washington, DC): Tasted blind, pear and vanilla nose, medium bodied, a bit of candy (specifically those chalky Valentine's hearts) and some white pepper on the finish. Once unveiled as a Riesling and re-tasted 40 minutes later, I approached this totally differently and the "pear and vanilla nose" became tropical and the candy notes well, made sense. Still young though and maybe in a weird place on that finish.

Old World Grab Bag (Dino Restaurant - Washington, DC): Absolutely fascinating nose of car exhaust, bug spray, flinty, smokey, petrol thing going on. Sugar cane and green apples on the palate. German Rieslings (Woodfire Grill): Straw colored. Strong and expansive nose of sulphur components. After waiting and swirling this just would not blow off. Some lychee and petrol in there. I seriously was thinking this was flawed, but when I finally got around to tasting it there was no trace of anything off at all on the palate. On the contrary, this was fresh, pure, clean fruit: apple, peach, with a bright acidity. I would hold this spät for a few years and see if it integrates. If it does I'd say it's a 91-92 point wine, but if the bouquet won't come together it would be an unsuccessful effort. Will not rate for now. 8.5% alcohol.

Strong reductive note on opening that diminished but didn't completely disappear. Petrol, peach, floral aromas and citrus. Nose suggests sweetness but there's not much sweetness on the palate. Long, pleasant citrus finish. Well balanced. I don't have much experience with Riesling but I'd say this needs a year or two.

I can't remember much because I did not enter a note at the time - right before we left for DC for Justin's graduation. I do recall it being drier than usual, with just the barest hint of sugar and unusual cut and minerality for a baby Prum.

And for today's unintended tasting note, I present this, the glass or so of wine left at the bottom of the bottle after it bumped up against its mate and broke apart in transit from my car on the way down to my cellar :( Retained gas quickly dissipates. An absolutely wow nose of tangerine, mandarin orange, peach, mango, flowers, and some honey. Substantial wine for a Mosel Spatlese with moderate sweetness. Caressing texture which gives the remarkable impression of stone fruit and cream, but the acid is there and there is great minerality that comes after this initially glossy impression. Fantastic wine! As sad as I am to not be able to drink the rest of this great bottle, I must say that my sneakers and driveway never smelled better... Time to get out and find a replacement bottle or two.

- Blind, GE/AUT tasting
- Three Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese were served.
1996:
- floral, quince, honey but so lean and simply elegant and so complex but still precise. Has enough fullness and sweetness but balanced with a great acidity. Probably one of the best white wines I have drunk so far.
- 96p
2005:
- Riper and more quince and honey, more body and beautiful stony flavours. Compared to the other two, the most intense Prüm.
- 95p
2007:
- Aroma profile similar to the other two but leanest and most precise.

Hmm last 750 of 3 from Garagiste 15 years ago, wish I’d bought more. Just gently settling into early middle age, still primary but less in-your-face about it than 10 years ago.

Update: On retaste, I think it's lost more than it's gained with age. Perhaps this is an intermediate stage, but this was better younger.

Healthy pale yellow colour
Lovely nose of rich fruit, white peach, maybe some honey and melons
Quite mineral with very good fruity aftertsdte and excellent weight - quite sweet bit sigar is well integrated
Lovely mosel wine which should develop very nicely over the next decade (at least)

A lovely and expressive bouquet of petrol, preserved lemon, apple, flinty reduction and white flowers soars from the glass, followed by quite a powerful, youthful palate impression defined by crisp acids and slate minerality.

Wow.

Sulfur on the nose, which dissipated after a night in the fridge. Light to medium bodied with low to medium acidity. Ripe apple and pear and some rocky minerality in the midpalate. A touch fatter than I expected for this vintage, otherwise quite nice. I will hold off on opening another bottle for at least 3 years.

I don't know why I keep opening these, as this is still painfully youthful. Petrol on the nose, with peach/pear/tropical fruit sweetness with good acidity to keep this from being OTT. Definitely will get better and even more balanced with some age.

Quite restrained at this point but beautifully balanced. Stone fruits, minerals, acidity, and a faint honeyed character all integrate seamlessly into a very attractive package. This will likely pick up some complexity as it ages.

Once unveiled as a Riesling and re-tasted 40 minutes later, I approached this totally differently and the "pear and vanilla nose" became tropical and the candy notes well, made sense. Still young though and maybe in a weird place on that finish.

Retained gas quickly dissipates.
