Heavy weight Etna Rosso made from single varietal of Nerello Mascalese from 70-100 year old wines, aged for 18 months in used FR oak. Medium ruby colour. Medium+ intensity aroma of strawberries, cheese, smoky cherries, roses, dried plums, caramel, smoke, tar. Full body, powerful, rich and silky structure, concentrated deep & matured flavours, lacks a bit of finesse and elegance, maybe brighter acidity. Otherwise its a great Nerello with medium fine tannins. On a slow decline, therefore drink up.

Found this in the cellar, and see it's a single bottle bought back in 2010. Other than that, not sure what it is, really. Cork broke, but both parts came out cleanly. Astonished to see no sediment whatsoever in the bottle. Presumably this was heavily filtered? Deep, dark ruby, starting to show some maturity. Immediate reaction to the nose is that it smells like port. Dark plums, violets and chocolate dominate. Feeling very liquorous, but there's also some interesting spice and ... and what is that? Something medicinal, somewhere between bay, eucalyptus and camphor. Once that medicinal note has come through, there's no shaking it. Initially, it actually feels a bit port-like on the palate, with lots of weight, dark fruit and power. But, and despite the whopping 14.5% abv, there's none of the spiritiness that port of the same age would have, and indeed, there's a rather pleasant freshness to the fruit. There's red fruit, layers of bitter and of sweet chocolate. Very mouthfilling, with quite chewy, cheek-puckering tannins. It's nicely drinkable, but I have to say that I'm not loving this.

Opened and let it breath in bottle for 1 hr. Very light in color similar to a Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo. Aromas of mature cranberries, black cherries and balsamic notes. Lots of primary fruit up front, strawberries, raspberries, red and black cherries followed by sweet balsamic acidity. Finishes with polished tannins and nice mouthfeel. Long aftertaste of over 1 minute.

Ripe and full bodied with big chewy sweet cherry fruit. Refreshing levels of acidity keep the sweetness from being cloying. There seems to be some bottle variation as my last bottle was significantly more demure.

Fermented and macerated for 2 weeks in stainless steel. Aged for 18-20 months in 3000 and 5000-liter neutral oak barrels. Total production 36,000 bottles. 14,5% alcohol.
Luminous, moderately translucent cherry red color. Somewhat restrained yet very nuanced and attractive nose with aromas of sunny red berries, sweet black cherries, some redcurrant liqueur tones, a little bit of smoky minerality and a sappy hint of herbal greenness. The wine is medium-bodied and ripe yet enjoyably crunchy on the palate with flavors of tart lingonberries, sweet red fruits, some sour cherry bitterness, a little bit of peppery spice, light smoky tones, a hint of sunny, plummy fruit and a touch of stony minerality. The wine is quite concentrated and structured for a Passopisciaro with its quite high acidity and moderately grippy medium-plus tannins. The quite long finish is ripe, sweet-toned and slightly warm with bold flavors of ripe red fruits, some sour cherry bitterness, a little bit of brambly black raspberries, a hint of stony minerality and a sappy touch of herbal spice.
A big, structured and still very youthful vintage of Passopisciaro. Doesn't show as much complexity as some of the older vintages, but that's mainly because this wine seems rather backward in comparison - conversely, it's easy to promise a lot of further aging potential for this wine, seeing how youthful it still is. Overall the wine is somewhat - but not too noticeably - bigger, riper and structured than most of the other Passopisciaros, showing lots of ripeness and some sense of concentration, but also enough structure to back it all up. All in all, a very nice effort that will continue to improve in the cellar. Expect the score to go up with age.

Opened an hour prior. Notes from memory. Dark garnet with some bricking at rim. High toned cherry bouquet and palate with a mineral streak. Acidity may be too high for some but I enjoyed the tension this provided. Fine tannins and moderate final.

Cowhorn, Rhys, some Italians, ++ (Pronzo's): Drinking very well and still very young. I had hoped for a bit more from this in terms of development, so perhaps it needs more time. Nice cherries on the nose with a bit of floral notes. Juicy acidity. On the palate, cherries that fill up the palate, but not layering at all. Nice long finish. It is a very good wine that was the victim of higher expectations. There were still a couple of glasses left (probably more than any other bottle), so I will see how it is later today.

Pure, mature, berry driven with a warm but nevertheless restrained kiss of sunshine. Excellent! Light red with some bricking. Large nose with blood-oranges dominating the fruit-dominated palette. On the palate this enters with excellent red berries, purity and the M++ zesty acids shine through almost immediately. Mid-palate shows off the aforementioned mellow kiss of sunshine. The beautiful maturity in this wine elegant and soft spoken. Tannins are fine grained M+ with small bitterness which give fine stability to the endgame. If I may wish for something, I'd wish they had brought this wine up with some oak. That would have been an amazing way to balance the acids just a bit and to give this wine some more oomph. This did not start off too well. Decanted into a half bottle. Smelled a little off - maybe maderised or otherwise heat damaged, then I thought maybe it was just the high alcohol, finally it sort of smoothed out into a pretty non-descript but not flawed nose. Still a hint of raisen, but mainly tart cherry. Powerful, but bright fruit on the palate, juicy tannic red cherry and red plum fruit, dry, but with a core of sweetness. Very dry and minerally on the finish. Very good. Revisiting the other half of the bottle a couple of days later, the maderised, cedar, paint notes were more pronounced. Seems a little damaged. Would downgrade - instead - not rated.

Yiannis summed this wine perfectly in the tasting note from December 2012.
Served with the Christmas roast from double magnum with a load of time (4+) in a decanter. The final bottle was poured into a single bottle for the following day and was even better. A thoroughly enjoyable wine that I only wish I had a case of.

Medium ruby-garnet. Dark cherry, tart cherry, cherry jam and sweet spice on the initially restrained nose. After aeration the sweet spice element becomes more evident and some tertiary notes indicating evolution appear. Medium-bodied with high acidity, soft tannins, bright fruit and a long, tart aftertaste. High alcohol (14.5%) is perfectly integrated. Quite enjoyable already, but has not enterted its plateau yet.

This thorough-breed has the potential to reach above 95p on my scale. Still young, but after a 4 hour double decanting at home, it came about really nicely at the restaurant. Well structured behemoth with high levels of tannins, acids and fruit. Long finish w/excellence and more notes of wonderful things than I feel necessary to recapitulate here. Previous tasters' notes dwell on them so well. To open at peak requires several more years of patience. To open for pleasure, today is as good a day as any :-) (French restaurant Grace in Gaienmae)

Decanted 2 hours, served at 18C. Bright, high toned cherry dominated palate with some minerals, fine tannins and a crescendo of red fruit across the mid-palate. Long, polished final with a touch of heat. This almost, but not quite, manages to hide its 14.5% alchohol and came across as an elegant, high toned wine bursting at the seams with unrestrained red fruit goodness.

Left this in the cellar for nearly a couple years... now I get it. Fantastic. Showing a little alcohol, but really a beautiful wine. As a side note of no improtance, saw this at a restaurant recently where they listed it as pinot noir. A reasonable mistake. This drinks like volcanic, fruit-forward burgundy.

Lots of spice, minerality, cherry, maybe even a bit of pepper. Nice silky mouthfeel with a beautiful finish. Almost pinot like in texture. Good structure, nice acid, good life ahead of of it. The last few weeks my tasting notes are boring, as just about everything is 90-94 points good....not complaining at all, though makes me worry about what is coming (all streaks come to an end!).

Interesting wine. Started out with some weird vegetal notes but these evolved over 30 minutes to ripe somewhat jammy fruits. Lovely texture (yes, sort of pinotesque) and persistant finish. Judicious use of wood. Overall, a warm weather style and a bit stewed for my tastes, but a well-made and very interesting wine. Not sure I would buy more. Worked nicely w/ Persian food.

Floral nose with hints of orange rind and spice. On the palate this is light but packed with an incredibly dense flavor profile, showing baking spice, stone, pepper, a touch of wood, and some candied red fruit. Integrated tannins on the end. Just a great bottle of wine. Really enjoyed this. Great paring with salumi @ Adesso in Oakland.
I drank this after dinner on 6/26/10. It had a gorgeous bouquet of candied cherry, raspberry, baking spice and milk chocolate. The palate was smooth, balanced and tasty with great acidity and flavors of bright red cherry, raspberry, spice, milk chocolate, toffee and coffee. I agree with Antonio Galloni’s assertion that it was like a cross between Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir. It was truly spectacular.
Faboulous bottle - Wet cedar upon opening, areated thru a rabbit. Nose continued to open for over 2 hours to floral and earthy scents. Tasted peppar, vanilla and cherry...maybe even chocolate. Beautiful bottle...so good we opened a second bottle, unfortunatly the last of it's kind in the cellar, but worth every drop!

I would say that the previous reviews apply to the wine upon opening, as it is tremendously tight, but after a few hours in a decanter this is extremely complex and solid. It has the goods to age for a long time. If I can, I'll wait a few years on the next one. Do yourself a favor and let this one open up.

So much cedar on opening that I was worried the bottle was off... but the barrel smells blew off and left behind a very drinkable, if not exceptional, wine. I had this vintage a year ago and the wine has really fleshed out since then. What was once almost feminine is now dark and dense with taut power and energy. Fruit is tart/sour cherry with some spice. Hoping the barrel effects might integrate more completely with a little time.

Tasted blind. Nose of earth and vanilla. On the palate, the wine was very smooth with tastes of thick, ripe cherry and a little peppery note to liven things up a bit. The finish was short-medium with cherries and spice-box. This was tasted directly after the wine that I rated the highest. Hopefully that didn't skew my impression. Overall very good.

Orta yoğunlukta lal taşı renkli şarabın burnu başta kiraz olmak üzere kırmızı meyve aromaları taşıyor. Ardından topraksı kokular, meyan kökü, baharat, vanilya ve sütlü çikolata notları alınıyor. Damakta benzer zenginlikte bir meyve profiline sahip. Orta yoğunluktaki tanenleri, diri asiditesi ile dengeli. Bitime yakın yüksek alkolü kendini gösteriyor.

We drank the second bottle with friends over a Manicotti dinner on 9/12/10. It had a great bouquet of stewed cherry, raspberry, spice and chocolate aromas. The palate was superbly balanced, smooth and tasty with bright red cherry, spice, chocolate, and toffee flavors.

Good potential. Too tight and sour right now, with pretty thin fruit.
