After 14 years, still garnet-purple and completely opaque, with the slightest amber edge. Very pronounced aromas of pure blackberries with some oak, really nothing else. Big "smash-mouth" jammy, concentrated and dense wine, viscous, with some tannin but staying back behind the fruit. Also has high acidity and definitely high alcohol. Aftertaste very rich, full, hot, and long. This was one of Sarah and Sparkey's best wines, considering quality and price point. This has huge fruit and power, without complexity or elegance, but an outstanding example of the particular style. Ric

This is my 6th bottle from a purchase made in 2009 and my concerns about the heat on the nose from my early reviews are gone and this wine is quite enjoyable, if you like the fairly intense fruit-forward, meaty/spicy style.

A score not given lightly. Kept at 55F, this McLaren Vale special did not disappoint. Bursting with vivant berry flavor and balanced with undertones of pleasant tannins, this is, simply, a spectacular wine.

Excellent, at its peak, has smoothed out since release. Still very fragrant and full-bodied but nicely balanced. Long aftertaste. Won't fade any time soon. Ric

Definitely towards the downhill side. Still in excellent shape but don’t see any upside to this wine. The acidity is completely gone and although these wines are fruit forward when young, this wine was like blueberries in the mouth. Delicious and would be enjoyed but majority of people. Drink up

Thankfully this is my last Mollydooker. Remains an extracted, fruit forward, spicy smack in the mouth. I think it was well made with its intended outcome, hence the score in the 80's.

First glass I had made after PnP me go "yuck", made me think of a plum and blueberry compote with alcohol added. After 24 hours it settled down into a "good" wine (82), meaning it was enjoyable but not memorable.

Pooped and poured. Very rich and concentrated, masking the high octane. Very blue, very deep, very tasty. A sipper. Would not have wanted to drink this any younger; should hold for another year or more, but no reason to wait if you want smooth, jammy, powerful.

A Cool Early Fall Wednesday Afternoon (Rocknroller's (Kevin's)): Very dark purple red color. Decanted for 15 minutes; drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. The nose is big with black and blue fruits of blackberry and blueberry, plum, vanilla, roasted meat, spice. The palate is a bit jammy, blackberry, boysenberry, plum, savory, pepper, wood and a bit of heat at the end. Holds its massive 16.5% ABV remarkably well though.

Double decanted; heavy sediment. Poured one hour later: Inky purple color. Blueberries, tobacco, minerals and far too much heat on the nose. Quite full bodied, concentrated blueberry jam on the palate, overwhelming whatever acids and tannins may be present. Long jammy finish. Overall, nothing subtle about this: just concentrated dark fruit juice plus alcohol. Probably will not improve with further age, and I plan to drink my remaining three bottles over the next year. At $50/bottle, a poor QPR.

Nov 21st 2015 "Getting the Band back Together" Tasting at Adam's (Phredd's Casa): Sheila's wine (she also brought the 2006 as a comparison). If I thought the 2006 was one-dimensional, it had the complexity of the 2009 Lafite compared to the 2007. Alcoholic grape jelly which such viscosity that the burning astringency would not leave my palate even after a water rinse. Less jet fuel and more napalm; 16.5% abv on the label has me wondering how the Aussies calibrate their instruments. Overall evaluation: C.

Molly Dooker remains among my favourite wines but reports by others of 'inkiness' certainly was the case with this 2007 bottle of Blue-Eyed Boy. Decanted for several hours but it remained a thick mouthful of wine. Pair decently with the tenderloin steaks but overall not what I remembered or expected. I still liked the wine but couldn't give it 90+ like I have in the past.

Had with group at House of Prime Rib. Wonderful shiraz, lots of big ink and rich berry flavor. Great value wine from MD but you must like these ink bombs to appreciate it.

Purple color. Decanted for 1 hour and drank 2 glasses over 90 minutes. This was pretty darn close to identical to my previous note on this wine. Nicely integrated oak and spice now. Very nice.

Everytime cellartracker decides that Blue Eyed Boy is next up on the drinkability report, I have no hesitation, but rather, great enthusiasm. With a quick Mollydooker Shake, releasing the nitrogen, and a subsequent turn of the twist top (oh, I wish all wineries were so evolved), the fragrant blast is emitted! Blackberry jam, such sweetness, perfect - really perfect acidity. This is the wine that convinced me to buy more and better wine. No matter that I have wines 2, 3, and 20 times its cost, the Blue Eyed Boy continues to remind me how much I love the art of creating good juice. I have decided to visit Mollydooker - it should be a wonderful trip. A great reason to plan a vacation, I think very much so.
Very tasty! The kind of wine that you can drink by itself and enjoy without food. Drank over 3 days with no sign of decline. Lots of sediments; decanting recommended.

Clear dark purple in colour. Clean nose of black fruit and spice. Lots of big black fruit on palate. Always a great wine to drink on its own. Lots go on underneath the jammy fruit. Can understand why this always rates so high.

This is just way too high in alcohol. Day 1 and Day 2 provided little difference. Just way too hot. And too sweet. No idea how/why Parker rated this so high. Just don't get it

This wine is an inky fruit bomb. The color is dense purple. The legs are slow as molasses. Pretty sweet and not as hot as I expected. The nose is blueberry and boysenberry. I agree with the former comments that now is the to enjoy this vintage. Much better than 'The Boxer'.

Drank this little baby to celebrate my 5 year old's birthday (2007 baby!) and unfortunately it is definitely time to drink these up. As others have mentioned, it took almost the whole night for the alchool to blow off and a lot of the sweet, yummy fruity-goodness was gone. Drink em if you got em!

Ungood. Way too hot. Way too much syrup. It tasted like a thick California fruit bomb mixed with rubbing alcohol. The worst thing about this wine is that I have more of them.

This was my last of the 07's. Time to drink up IMO. Not as good as my previous bottles. Too much alcohol and a gritty mouth feel (even after filtering). I think these are much better when you drink them young. We still finished the bottle though! :)

Inky, dark blood red with numerous, thin tears that color the glass a pale magenta. The nose is downright thick: sweet, jammy strawberry, raspberry, lots of tart cherry and cooked dried plums. Semi-sweet chocolate and hints of coffee are also present, along with a nose-drying pungency.
Full-bodied with medium viscosity and a full-on alcohol tingle and powdery, smooth tannins. Stewed fruits: dark cherries and plum that last forever and coat the tongue. More mocha notes on the finish.
I've always heard of these over the top, highly extracted, wines, but never did I think they were this... obscene. My god, it's so rich it's disgusting: sickeningly heavy to drink on it's own and far too large to match well with any food. This isn't even close to the style that I normally enjoy (in fact, it's the first style of wine I've ever actually disliked), so I won't give it a score.

I bought this wine for my dad as a christmas gift. He tends to like fruit forward wines and based on research went with this wine. Im not a fruit bomb fan but had a glass with him to see what it was like, The nose is very dark with both blue fruit and chocolate. Taste is black fruit and chocolate all day long. This wine has very high alocohol level i want to say its around 16.5% if i remember correctly. However the the sweet fruit beginning balance with the alcohol and bitter chocolate really nicely. Wouldnt buy for myself but I can appreciate this wine for what it is. Cheers.

- Brick color with medium forming legs and aromas of blackberry, raspberry and chocolate. It's somewhat balanced and has flavours of blackberry with a medium/full body. Round texture with a long finish - Lots of fruit on the nose...drinking well right now!

No evolution, not better - not worse than last time I tasted this. Blueberry compote and such a full bodied palate there is nothing to compare to. The residual sweetness needs to be written with capital letters and that would still be an understatement. Indeed a nice companion to cheese, but not a wine for the faint hearted. I have said it before, but to a good Comté and some fig marmelade this is marvellous!

Clear dark ruby in colour. Clean med+ intensity or blackberries and cassis. Dry, med acidity, smooth tannins, med+ body, blackberries, black currant, and spices on palate. Nice med finish. Hard to believe the high alcohol. A little too jammy for my taste, but still a nice wine. Definitely benefited from decant.

Disappointing. The more enjoyable aspects of this wine - the spicy dark fruits - were simply drowned in a sea of flabby vanilla oak. It's a shame that a well made wine has to get ruined in a new oak barrel when it could otherwise stand well on its own.

Not as good as my previous bottle. Not sure if it was me or the bottle. Lots of sediment, so I advise filtering. This is a very enjoyable, over the top, fruit bomb, in the typical MD style. Hard to go wrong with BEB if you like this style. I could not drink this regularly, but I sure do enjoy it periodically.

Thick, unctuous, sweet, intensely fruity with an alcohol bite, like cheap port or seedless boysenberry jam diluted with vodka. I tried to like it, wife hated it from the first sip. Wine didn't change a bit after two days, so down the drain it went, staining the white porcelain and leaving behind a pile of hard chunks of sediment. It's a stretch to call this wine.

Big and rich on the nose, with black currant and blueberry, some tar, and a touch of pepper at the end. Loads of blueberry and black currant on the palate, some tar and pepper in the middle, and a very tannic finish.

I think I'm losing my taste for this style. Certainly pleasant and easy to drink, but hardly what you'd call complex or structured. More of an overextracted, overoaked, fruit bomb.

Strained and decanted..Sediment was heavy, and wine didn't need very long to open up. Dark fruit and some heat, which quickly mellowed out. Was very nice to drink stand alone as well as accompanying some cheese and meats for appetizers.

Did the "MD-shake" and then poured thru the Vinturi. What struck me first was how VERY dark in color this wine was. A strong nose of black fruits and alcohol. On the palate, the jamminess of the fruits works very well against the tannins and alcohol to provide for a smooth wine with a lot of character and a long finish. Paired well with barbequed baby-back ribs. Very enjoyable wine if you like this style.

Did the Mollydooker shake and then decanted for about an hour and drank over the next 90 min or so (could have used longer decant), should have filtered, a fair amount of sediment; description similar to others- very dark violet, inky, opaque; jammy fruit, blackberry, currant, a little eucalyptus and some heat on the nose, alcohol is definitely noticeable; taste similar to the nose, some jammy fruit, spice, maybe a little white pepper; mid-palate, moderate finish, not tannic; you can definitely taste the alcohol (16.5%), but got better with time, should have decanted longer; paired very well with lamb kabob marinated in olive oil + lemon juice + garlic; if you like the big, bold Aussie style, you'll love this excellent shiraz.

Found this bottle open and dripping in my cellar - loose screw top. Boy do I hate those screw tops. opened it and poured it through cheesecloth since there was a great deal of sediment in the bottle -- not ideal conditions but even after such shabby treatment it retained much of its jammy flavor and the spice notes others have described. I have one more and will drink it young.

Opened the screw cap, decanted and consumed over 3 hours. I hate screw caps... I probably should have decanted longer, but it was time to catch buzz. Dark, inky, opaque, blackish-purple hue with light sediment in the bottle. Strong nose of dark fruit: blackberries, dark cherries, cassis, and ripe strawberries. Full midpalate with some dark current bitterness and kind of sweet. Jammy, not tannic. The ALC (16.5%) was noticeable, but relatively well balanced. The finish was pleasing and of moderate length. Definitetly of the "Bold Aussie Shiraz" style. For some reason I enjoyed this specific bottle of Blue Eyed Boy a little more than the previous one. I would recommend drinking now or over the next few years as these are meant to drink young.

Smooth as silk, delicious and perfect to drink, this Aussie Shiraz is absolutely delicious. Not complex, not sophisticated, this wine has terrific dark purple fruit that is Jammy, but not quite over the top. The finish goes on and on and if you are having lamb, steak or even chocolate, this wine pairs quite nicely.

High Scoring Aussies Offline (Rocknroller's (Kevin's)): Purple red color. Nose is very nice with blueberries, blackberry, cassis, licorice, spice, earth and eucalyptus, initially some alcohol in the background that blows off. The palate has full body, nice black fruits with some tartness, spicy oak, and a long finish. Very good.

It has been 6 month since my last experience with this wine and I continued to be amazed. Opaque in color, almost black, with soft, rounded edges and huge dark fruits up front. Finish lasted for a while and reminded me of my love for the blue eyed boy!!! Also introduced this wine to Mollydooker neo-phites tonight -- reminded me why I love exploring wine! Rocked their world!

Honestly, this is truly an experience, but is it "good"? I say, yes it is - especially to cheese and marmelade. A hedonistic, bombastic, over-the-top wine which still provides depth and character behind the explosive facade. But it is as far from elegant a wine could be. To a Comté and some fig marmelade - highly recommended. (score is 92-93)

This is your definition of a Big, Bold, "Inky" Shiraz. I strongly recommend decanting for atleast two hours before going after this monster. This wine really takes time to open up. Otherwise it can be too bitter and over the top. Deep, dark, opaque purple with sediment present. The bottle should have a more defined shoulder... Strong bouquet of blackberry, dark cherry, and a hint of strawberry. Chewy with a lingering finish. I don't like the screw cap at all as I feel a traditional cork would benefit the maturation process of this wine over the next decade. A fun wine and unique.

Let breathe in bottle for 4 hours. Wonderfully balanced between ripe black currants and other dark berries, licorice and oak. Nice, smooth finish. Separate from the scoring... I always ask myself: why do wines with sediment get presented in bottles with no shoulder to trap the (significant) dregs? Still, a fantastic wine for all occasions, in my book.

Deep saturated flavors, cherry and blueberry and menthol. Despite being open for several hours, there is still quite a bit of heat here. Lovely flavors, and I love Aussie Shiraz (Glaetzer, Claredon Hillls), but I understand some of the complaints about this wine maker. Balance seems to be sacrificed for overwhelming richness. I enjoyed it very much, but this teeters o the edge of vulgarity.

A wine or not thats's the question? I am not sure how to rate this sumptuous hedonistic effort from Sparky and Sarah Marquis, but I guess the best thing to do is to just judge it for what it is: A pleasure creater. To cheese and jam it is perfect, revealing a truck load of dark sundried fruit and an endless smoky vanilla fudgy tone. Pure fun. Pure craziness.

Very dark and solemn garnet - crimson red. Not too expressive on the nose, but very delicious and intriguing, showing wild berries, blackberry and caramel. Does not lack power or expressiveness on the palate at any point. Shows marvelous length and awesome complexity throughout. Fabulous structure that supports and blends in perfectly with its parade of flavors, showing dark fruit, wild berries, sour cherries, then toffey caramel, on to dark chocolate, then an explosive finish of bountiful fruit, cocoa and expresso flavors, and light sage and black pepper. This wine still shows quite young, with a slight trace of heat, and this bottled contained quite a bit of sediments. I should have decanted the wine.

Consistent with prior notes from April. Dark inky purple color. No light passing. Rich bombastic fruit flavors literally leap out of the glass to hit your nose! Sucker punch! Really, this has some wonderful fruit on tap. Rich and deep black and blue berry. Doing the Mollydooker shake really does help blow off some of the heat. Allowed to sit open for one hour before pouring. The difference from the Boxer level label, is the smooth and velvety approach on the palate. All the richness of the fruit, Syrup, and expresso bean is there, with less of the oak and tannic bit. What it does well, it does really well. However, this is close to desert in a glass, and really hard to pair with food. Went well with a slice of pecan pie, but not as much with lighter fare. This is a worthy bottle, but is not for the faint of heart!

Drank at Nana's to celebrate Owen's birth (Blue Eyed Boy). This was a deep, dark, layered wine. It certainly has the huge dark fruit, but it also has layers of concentrated fruit. The fruit itself was complex, but the overall wine was not as complex as a more subtle Syrah from the Northern Rhone or California. It differentiates itself from the Boxer in its smoothness and integrated tannins. Really nice. 92-93

Im not sure why everyone feels compelled to bash Australian shiraz, or put others down that enjoy this style of wine. I agree that this is not something I would drink every day. On occasion though, this is a fun wine to drink. As said: Dark, inky purple. A "punch in face", definitely. Alot of berry jammy goodness, smokey, like overflowed pie filling burning in the oven. At first very harsh! Huge alcohol. We let it decant about 3 hours, and drank it over that period. Very unctious and smooth. The other guys skunked it down before I could REALLY analize it. Interesting there was about a full tablespoon on debris left in the decanter more than I've ever seen before. If your not a fan of shiraz fruit bombs you probably will have something smart to say about "overextracted" and "fake boobs", but sometimes... I like fake boobs! $45 about right price. This reminds me of the 05 Carnival of Love and 05 #9

Dark inky purple to black. Totally opaque. This is what it is. Dark Raspberry and blackberry liqueur with spices and pepper in spades. This is on the second night, after some air and vacuum, seal. YOu have to love this for what it is, a alcohol rich, flavor rich extracted fruit bomb. This is, however, smoother than the Boxer, with much more complexity and secondary flavors of dark chocolate and meat. You can have your dark chocolate cake and eat it too with this wine. I have difficulty pairing it with any food, but it is a flavor rich hedonistic wine, which can add some spice to any night. It is not, nor will it ever be a smooth red to pair with fine meats or steaks. Drink at your own pleasure, and your own risk!!!

Nose was baked and jammy fruits. A mixed bunch of every dark berry and plum you could find. Palate followed suit. Big, goopy fruit. If there was any structure to this thing, I couldn't located due to the spoon of jam in my mouth. This is just not my bag.

In between the insanity of back-to-back vacations, and the alternating rhythms that disconnect Winter from Spring, we needed a beacon to light the path between the rocks. Since the earth already is in flux when you are traveling between hemispheres, I reached for something from Down Under to get my bearings. Like most Mollydooker wines, this is high in alcohol, yet smooth and silky. A friend of mine calls Mollydooker his house wine, and I agree -- a great house wine when you want the world to slow down, and the planes to seem like distant memories of another time. Or when you want to prepare for the next journey.

Jay Miller, are you kidding me? 95 pts??? This to me is almost unrecognizable as a wine. Frankenwine. Here's the recipe: Take 1 gallon grape Kool-Aid, reduce to 1/2 the original volume. Add in every kind of blackberry, blueberry, black cherry jam you can find. Reduce more. Take 2 giant scoops of white sugar and stir in. Pour in 1 quart of vodka and one quart of brandy, and Bam! you've just created a 95 pt wine. 16.5% alc. That's all I have to say. Are you kidding me??? Tasted more like a Port than a table wine. OK, so this is absolutely explosive an unctuous in the mouth, but come one, just too much fake boobs and makeup for me (and by fake boobs, I mean residual sugar). Literally like it was made from frozen wine concentrate. I cannot think of 1 single food item that wouldn't be completely overwhelmed by this wine. Not going to put a score up in the normal box out of respect for Sparky and Sarah, but for MY palate, this is like an 79-80pt wine maybe.

If you are looking for a big unctuous fruit forward scrumptious wine...This is it!!!! Twisted and poured....Somewhat closed on the nose, but more than makes up for it with the first swallow. Beautiful lush black fruit that surround your palate and finishes with tame tannins and a nice long finish. WOW, what a great wine and I will definitely be seeking more if I can find it. A solid QPR if you can purchase in the $40 range. Parker has this dead on with his "95" rating. Definitely in its drinking window now with several years ahead of it.

Pancakes with Maple Syrup, dead on. There is a completely delicious, completely bizarre blast of this flavor on the finish. If this real, Sparky and Sarah are freaking magicians. Are there laws about artificial flavor additives? Either way this bottle is really fun for the big wine lover. It is extremely potent. Does not have the polish of EP or COL but it still delivers that wow factor that The Boxer is missing.

Popped and poured. HUGE extracted wine that shows initial tannin and blueberry. Over an hour this evolved into a silky, unctuous wine showing blueberry, sweet vanilla, blackberry and cedar. Popped, and decided to give this bottle the "mollydooker shake". Not sure how I feel about shaking the sh*t out of a nice bottle, but if that's what they call for, then...
Pours a rich, dark purple in the glass. Thin-rimmed clear water band. Nose was incredible, and danced around everything from an initial brown/maple sugar, to blueberry, banana leaf, smoke and tar. On the palate, a very satisfying mouth coating feel, this big shiraz gives way to a bunch of blueberry and black fruit flavors, and ends with a big finish. To sum it up in one statement, this is like blueberry banana pancakes with maple syrup. Nice acidity, nice balance, nice wine.

Wow...what a fruit bomb! Decanted for 1 hour, dark garnet, chewy shiraz. Spice, pepper, dark dark berries, cherries on the nose, very nice finish. My first Mollydooker, very nice wine, a bit overpriced.

This wines reminds me of the Carnival Of Love but not as complex. It is dense as lead and loaded with flavors. On the nose blueberries, pepper, and fatty meat dominates. In the mouth it's more fruit and more toasty bacon. Finishes fairly long. There are lots of wines in this style and many of them carry the Mollydooker labels. Some people love them some hate them. Blue Eye Boys is sort of middle of the road. It's stronger than some other brands but lacks the complexity to put it with the other great Aussie fruit bombs.
Remember, you don't drink the label.

Awesome. "Disco Stew" should be sure to do "The Mollydooker Shake" - it will more quickly blow off the nitrogen with which this wine in bottled - there is a video about it on the Mollydooker web site.

Rating is based on potential. Stong blueberry on the nose with a bit of the bacon fat that you will read about. Wine is very tight and young, but was still drinkable. Did not decant, but was clear that with some opening, this quickly became a crowd pleaser. Very complex and velvety on the pallate. Less "spicey" than a traditional Shiraz. The blueberry held throughout and there were muted spices (pepper and nutmeg) that did not overpower. Heavy sediment at the end of the bottle, even for a wine this young. Feel that this would be a 95+ with some time. Will be buying more for the cellar.

Initial pop and pour...needs to sit in the decanter for a couple of hours to let the alcohol blow off. After decanting (3 hours)...needs to chill out in the bottle for a couple of years, will try again then.

Spectacular colour - black crimson with black crimson hue and paint like cling. Top note of liquorice and plum followed by blackberry and black pepper. The palate delivers plenty of flavour, with excellent weight and mouthfeel. Explosive black pepper, dark plum, blackberry and liquorice. Very spicy black pepper back palate. Fine grained tannins. A wine reflective of the gentleness of the young boy that it was named after - 'gentle elegance!' and a PQR that puts many wines to shame! -nicks

Nose is intoxicating, literally... with blueberry jam on toast and vanilla. Dark and obviously hot. Full bodied and showing sweet blackberry that turns spicy but drying after the initial flavor burst that finishes very hot with a lasting flavor of sour blackberry on the finish. This wine is out of balance. I know there are people out there that really enjoy these but obviously, I'm not one of them. This wine could be poured over ice cream of drank for a quick buzz.

Initial pop & pour....Inky purple, medium body, fairly tannic though not unpleasant. Strong dark red fruit, initially plummy, but later more black cherry. Strong peppery flavor in the finish. Ultimately....I couldnt find much that I liked about. It is really ridiculous. Offensive with the steak that we tried to eat with with it. Hot and plummy. Out of balance. Waste of money

A touch of cigar and eucalyptus.

On the palate, the jamminess of the fruits works very well against the tannins and alcohol to provide for a smooth wine with a lot of character and a long finish. Paired well with barbequed baby-back ribs. Very enjoyable wine if you like this style.

Very good.

Like most Mollydooker wines, this is high in alcohol, yet smooth and silky. A friend of mine calls Mollydooker his house wine, and I agree -- a great house wine when you want the world to slow down, and the planes to seem like distant memories of another time.

Ultimately....I couldnt find much that I liked about. It is really ridiculous. Offensive with the steak that we tried to eat with with it. Hot and plummy. Out of balance. Waste of money

Mollydooker Tasting, Cary, NC. Good balance of alcohol and structure. Prominent, sharp fruit. Delicious.

Color is black. The nose is sweet blueberries and oolong tea. The tannins are really ripe and rich and well integrated. The finish is endless.
