Good. Softened over time. Leesy. Toasty apple. Some of the crisp apple has given way to secondary notes. This is very good right now and should drink well for several years.

Not quite what I remember it being on release when I devoured several bottles in a hurry. Soft and balanced but lacking the prior depth and charge. The cork was incredibly tight and stuck and I almost reached for a wrench before it finally broke free. Still... enjoyed by all four of us as a kick-off to a great night of wine.

This does keep getting better over the years. Over the four bottles I purchased in 2009, I have one left. This wine has a very pronounced presence. About 10 years on the lees, it tastes that it has been there. Very biscuity, there is little butter but rather a sharpness to the mouthfeel that I find nicely attractive.

Popped and poured. Light golden yellow hue (perhaps a hint of amber?), fine bead. Lovely, complex nose of ripened pear slices, candied berries, grapefruit zest, lifted florals, crushed aniseed, fennel, and a distinct note of toffee. Medium-light body. Well-ripened fruit complimented by a mellowed, oxidized note really stand out on the palate, along with flavors of honeyed citrus, caramel, and spice. Long finish. Not overtly acidic and a touch off-dry, this might not be the best for those who prefer a racier bottle of bubbles...either way, this is an exceptional American Sparkling wine that is drinking perfectly at the moment and one that would be best drunk sooner rather than later.
Quick note/self-pontificating: The last of 5 bottles I've been fortunate to taste over the past few years, this particular bottle was the best yet. And at this point in my tasting evolution I'd be hard-pressed to compare the style to that of any other sparkling wine region...just uniquely delicious, much like the distinct wines of OR are as a whole. Makes one wonder why we feel compelled to engage in regional comparisons...and perhaps, when a wine speaks so loudly, maybe it's best to simply appreciate them for what they are as opposed to what our instinctual preconceptions tell us they could or should be.

Popped and poured. Light golden straw hue, persistent bead. Forward aromas of berries, pears, stone fruits, white flowers (honeysuckle?), brioche, and hints of yeast...quite fruit forward. Medium-light to medium body, nicely concentrated for a sparkling wine. On the palate, the fruit is forward and tasty, with notes of ripe pear, apple dumpling, and a touch of honeyed citrus plus hints of hazelnut and a slightly oxidized note. Medium acidity, well balanced in a dry style. Moderate-plus close. In a nice drinking window, probably best to drink over the short term before the lively fruit starts fading.

Extremely interesting nose of oysters or clean sea water. Color had darkened a bit to a nice golden yellow, and the bubbles were maybe a bit more flat than your typical Champagne, but I actually enjoyed that quite a bit. Touch of sweetness when drinking, but it had a nice, dry finish with enough acidity to balance out the wine well. Seemed bigger bodied that most sparklers, which while possibly not as food-friendly of a quality, I found quite enjoyable. I don't have enough experience with sparklers to estimate how much time this bottle could have lasted, but I can say with certainty that it is drinking very well right now. If I had any more I wouldn't necessarily be afraid to wait another year yet, but given how nice this bottle was, I don't think I'd bother keeping it around for another year.

Great sparkling wine. On the nose somewhat muted apples, pear and toast. Great mousse and extremely fine bubbles. On the palate there was pears, green apples, nuts and more toast with delightful pears going on for minutes on the nice long finish. The mouth feel is very silky. Two in two weeks that are consistent and good. Served cooler than last week, which helped the acidity seem a bit more pleasing. Medium gold color, apple and pear as always, with some bread dough. Finish was not drying like it was last week. hmmm..
Good stuff this time (much better than my previous bottles). Served a bit warmer than I usually like it, but the medium gold color delivered a good punch of apple and pear, as well as some hints of bread, with good acidity on the long, though somewhat drying finish.

Much simpler than 6 months ago. Good acidity, but the nose and flavors were quite muted, with some apples and pears, but no real texture or yeasty flavors to give it some oomph. Nothing wrong with the bottle, perhaps just a dumb phase? With the 1997 and 1998 versions of this, I seem to get a fair amount of bottle variation.

Outstanding, but not exceptional. Quite fizzy on opening. Very well made, but not showing it's age or time on the yeast as I would expect. Where is the complexity? I prefered the 1997 vintage of this wine.

Another gathering on the island (66 Mouton, Lascombes, Musar, and photos...) (Scott Worcester's in Southwest Harbor, ME): This took some time to open up...While I enjoyed it this is not nearly as good as some of my other bottles...it has me thinking more about bottle variation and how unfortunate it is for the few people that only take one stab at a wine...I've been fortunate enough to taste 4 bottles over the last year or so...and sadly this was the least enjoyable of the bunch...but it was still outstanding once it had the time to open up.

Opened with Bob & Kathy Bartlett after a days tasting at their winery. In the glass it was a light golden yellow with a fine mousse. Getting home from the weekends work and I was ready for something fun...this hit just the spot. With a lovely mousse and exotic scents of fresh linen, honeydew melon, kiwi, and a melange of other fruits this wine hit all the right notes. In the mouth it transitions seamlessly from Macintosh apple, caramel, baked pineapple, and banana...all while still showcasing an underpinning of striking minerality. For the price this can not be beat.

Wasn't sure what I was expecting, but this wasn't it. More like a carbonated white wine than like a champagne blend--like a super-fruity blanc de blanc. Surprised that there wasn't a more noticable pinot backbone considering that argyle is a big pinot producer. Left half the bottle in the refrigerator overnight. On the second dday it was really delicious, with apple and dough flavors dominating. Not sure if it got better or my mood changed but I ended up liking this pretty well.

Just a great bottle of sparkling wine; my favorite domestic producer of sparkling wine and at around $40 per bottle, compares very favorably to Champagne. Lively, energetic wine, rich and creamy texture, but with plenty of apple/pear fruit and good, light acidity.

Popped and poured. Medium-light lemon hue. Great nose of ripened stone fruits, apples, and a touch of biscuit - all-in-all lovely aromas. Medium-plus body, with nice concentration. Very round in mouth, with nice flavors of fruit, yeast, and some mineral notes too. Medium acidity gives this one a more fruit driven profile and lately my palate has been veering towards a more acidic style....but still, this is wonderful juice with a great finish. Argyle is easily one of the top producers of sparkling wine in the world outside of Champagne.

As before, a beautiful sparkler. A pretty golden color, dense mousse, lemons and apples on the nose. Light profile with the fruit, but dense and rich mouthfeel. An extraordinary wine. This is one that provoked sudden exclamations of delight. 93-94.

15% Pinot Noir, 85% Chardonnay. Best Argyle sparklie I've ever tasted. Light yellow color, minimal bubble action. Super smooth palate, bit of honey, apples, mineral notes, and what a finish. Great way to ring in 2009.

Nose of apples with a slight hint of honey, and a odd dustiness on the end that only adds to the experience. Taste reminds me of tart pear with some nuttiness on the mid palate. The finish is lengthy and offers a awesome complexity with flavors that escape description for me. The bubbles are a bit strong, I guess I was expecting them to be a bit smoother. Over-all a fantastic wine and a great experience. Got better as it got warmer, I would suggest presenting this at cellar temp and re-visiting at next to room temp because this wine really evolves.

Really a Killer bottle!!! The color was just brillant gold. The flavor was clear and tropical fruit. Not sweet, but very virbant and a strong finish that did not fade lightly. There was very little toast effect, and as such the was not as much of a yeasty taste as in the 97' Tirage. It paired extremely well with French toast casserole and fresh fruit on Christmas morning. Just a wonderful treat!

Drank on Chrismas Eve. This showed really great potential. On the nose there were overwhelming notes of Fuji Apples and biscuit dough. This was followed by a nice lemon-citrus note and just a tiny bit of tropical/creamy aromas. Really great on the palate with a powerfull and lasting finish. The wine was exceptionally fresh and satisfying; I'd like to try it after a few more years in the bottle. A completely different style than any Champagne I've tried--but a welcome departure, and one I'd like to explore further. Give it a try if you can find it; for the price it give Champagne a run for the money--and is one more reason I love Oregon

Pretty, perfumed nose, with lemon candy and faint pear on the nose. It's gossamer-light in the mouth at first, but it grows in weight to a surprisingly powerful finish. This is a different wine at the end then at its beginning. This is a different wine than the '95 and the '96, which seemed a little more rich through and through, but I'm guessing that time in the bottle will harmonize the '98 into something remarkable. This really is the best American sparkling wine I know. 93-94.

Popped and poured. Lemon-yellow hue. Toasty-biscuit aromas on the front end open to reveal a delicious, almost 1er cru-esque profile, with ripened red delicious apple, pear, pie crust...even a touch of lychee. Lifted floral scents appear as this bubbly sits in the glass. Just wonderful to smell and contemplate. Medium-light in mouth, the Chardonnay element appears to dominate the palate, with slightly less fruit and more of the complex yeasty, spicy elements you might find in a refined Blanc de Blancs......but the fruit is there (baked apple pie?). If I had one criticism, albeit very small, it's that the finish does seem a little short. But either way, this is just a delight and easily one of the best new world sparkling wines I've ever tasted...I could spend an entire evening enjoying the wonderful bouquet of aromas that emanate from the glass!

Very crisp and clean. With a 85% Chardonay and 15% Pinot mix, this definitely has the crispness of the Chardonay in it's character. This is going to be an excellent wine with a light hearted chicken or fish dinner. Tasted at the Argyle Winery at Dundee today on it's first day out of the gate. At 640 cases, this is going to go fast!

Not bad, but not great. Seemed a bit simple. For the price, not worth it.

Great bubbly. Drank at Lynn's birthday party. She and everyone else thought it was fantastic.

Pear and hint of vanilla cream. Less yeast taste than '07, therefore a step above. Well deserving of WS top 100!
