This starts with a lovely umami on the nose. There are elements of olive brine, and a very smooth, creamy, palate. This tends to be my favorite of the non Syrah Cayuse. This still has some brightness and will last, and perhaps develop for a while. I enjoyed it with steak. But it does not have the complexity or oomph to raise it higher. This lacks the intellectual depth of the great at use syrahs, and some of the great Bordeaux I have had. Curious to try again in a few years. I don’t worry about this falling apart.

I think this is Baron's most elegant wine. Medium garnet, not completely opaque. Moderately pronounced aromas with floral scents, red berries, soft, complex, elegant. Slight smoky overtones from French oak, but subtle. Soft, smooth, and round on the palate, but still medium-full bodied, the flavors keep building on the back part of the palate, with anise coming in and extending to the very long aftertaste, which is slightly hot. Fully mature, but should easily last five more years or longer. Ric

Very strong showing off a 1 hr decant, 60% Cab Franc 40% Merlot, so the Cayuse Cheval Blanc if you will. Very Cayuse on the nose, and coming from the height of the funky period (and a warm vintage) tons of wild scents, grilled meats, peppers, and the previously mentioned funk. More classical themed on the palate, the real payoff was the way the medicinal cherry fruit played of a complex loamy / soil quality that was really compelling. Some Vanilla notes too that have seem to appear in middle aged Cayuse wines, by no means a distraction, it actually worked pretty well in the package as a whole. Hard to see improvement, hard to see a decline, so drink now and over the next decade or so.

Medium to deep ruby pale rim. Charming nose (US Pinot like) of fresh acacia, violet, ripe strawberry, red currant candy, dill, earthy, mineral, hint of coffee bean, dark chocolate. On palate, medium boby, very focus and elegant, light weight. Could use more acidity though. Still noticeable chewy tannins. Good concentration with flavours of herbaceous, red date, black tea, black cherry, strawberry candy, leather. Fairly long finish. Still young.

nose: slight spice, slight greenness, a very complex nose. Maybe sandalwood in there somewhere?
palate:the mouthfeel was velvety, but light in character, not heavy in the vein of Cayuse syrahs. Tasted of sour cherry and stems and darker berries and grass. The greenery became more pronounced over time, but it emphasized the fruit instead of distracting from it. I really enjoyed this. I really wish this winery would sell me some of the Flying Pig - I've asked every year for 5 years!

Fantastic wine, a little remorse as last bottle of a 3 bottle night with friends, probably a little over-served at that point, but do remember, was complex and very good

Tasted with four 2010 Reynvaan syrahs, their 2011 cab, two 2009 No Girls, and four other Cayuse. Opaque garnet. Compared with Camaspelo, it's softer, rounder, slightly sweeter and more perfumed, more approachable. Right Bank French style. Very soft and supple palate, combination of red and black fruits, but still very concentrated. Perfectly balanced with fruit, acid, and tannin, and very drinkable. A bit tannic and alcoholic on the aftertaste, which may soften after a few years. Wonderful now, should easily hold 5+ years. Ric

One awesome wine. Just singing. Medium bodied, excellent red and blue fruit, tobacco, minerals, spice...pretty much everything. 60 second finish. Probably will still get better with a few more years.

Wednesday Night Club - December 2010 (Peter Pratt's Inn): Decanted 4hrs. Initially a bit tight and unyielding. The nose was classic funky Cayuse. After this opened up there were notes of plums, currants, allspice, black licorice and tobacco leaf. This is a bull of a wine and needs a bit of cellaring to allow all the components to come together. Fantastic stuff.

Splash decanted for a good 45 minutes. Oddly, very little scent out of the decanter had me a little concerned that the wine was corked or damaged in fashion. However, once the wine was in the glass and the first whiffs of the Cayuse funk began to emerge, all doubts were put to rest. At this point, there was little to differentiate this wine from a Cayuse Syrah at least from the nose, which no doubt is in part due to its extreme state of youth. The palate was that of roundness and expansion; a tight core of smoky plums and tobacco leaf that slowly but very confidently reaches all corners of the mouth. Long, mineral driven finish. Should be a beauty in another 5 years or so, but no harm drinking one now.

Barrel sample. Holy sh$t this wine made my back straighten and pay attention. An intriguing smell of Cayuse funk paired with more traditional cab franc stylings of leaf tobacco and minerals. The complexitites this wine will develop over time will surprise and delight. 94-96 pts.

I have found most of our Cayuse have just tasted off, not the special wines I’ve enjoyed from them in the past.
