  • Weightlessly powerful, mixed red and dark fruits with prevalent smoky and leather however lacks the depth one may expect from the producer/vintage/terroir combination.

  • To commemorate the start of the last month we opened this Bonnes-Mares Mugnier 2002. Seductive Chambolle nose, a little earthy and floral still. Weightless body, so light yet intense and expressive. With 20 years of age in a perfect place. I am wondering if blind I would have guessed Musigny rather than BM, but the slight earthiness possibly points to BM.

  • A compelling and serious nose with lots of savory and earthy red cherry. Palate is pretty but a little lightweight for Grand Cru and in the context of the the line up. From relatively young vines at this time, I am told.

  • Nice bright delicate styled red fruits with nuanced floral tones and good spice. Lighter weight BM especially for the vintage and next to the Le Moine BM '02,. Quite good, although my expectations were higher regarding complexity and depth.

  • A Birthday / Burgundy Dinner (The Bristol): Bright red fruit with the weightless textures I find most commonly in the best of Chambolle. Less layered or nuanced vs the best of Bonnes Mares, seemingly borderline Grand Cru density.

  • Last bottle opened in 2020. Ending the year I will never forget, with a wine I will never forget: 2002 Mugnier Bonnes Mares.

Feels like drinking a Rembrandt, while reflecting upon a war we are just about to win - but nobody wants to declare victory prematurely and jinx us all. So I will just keep admiring this Old Master and biding my time.

I adore the 2002 vintage for red Burgundy, and Mugnier is one of my favorite producers. Even still the sum is greater than the parts here, this wine bewitched me the first time I tasted it. I was lucky enough to source a case after the first taste - will I ever see a whole case of Mugnier again? This was my last bottle and all 12 were well and truly exquisite. This grand encore thrilled me.

I love the sweetness of the fruit and flowers, juxtaposed with the dry and stemmy nuances. Juicy black fruit and clean, precise red fruit.

The sauvages brings it over the top. The fruit is majestic, the aromas are elegant, it bursts with flowers and exotic spice. But that hint of stemmy animale is what brings it to genius level brilliance. It’s the slight crookedness of Mona Lisa’s smile.

I am really going to miss this wine. But I don't think I will miss 2020 😬

  • surprising that this is a Bonne Mares and not a Musigny - so elegant and refined, with beautiful flowery scent. Still some red fruit. Serene.

  • La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers - New York NY): Late night small our. Red cherry and berry with bits of savory spice and earth. Good weight with sneaky power emerging on long-ish finish. Very good now.

  • La Paulee 2020 - Gala Dinner (Pier 60): This is shyer and more weighty than 02 Amoureuses and Musigny, but the wine is great. Vintage killer acid and elegance. 93+

  • Showing at its finest. This wine is my jam, everything I want in a Burgundy. Supremely seductive and elegant aromas were complemented by an expansive and silky palate. Gliding along in the mouth, classic iron fist in velvet glove. There were cheers around the table.

  • A beautiful bottle of this elegant and complex wine. Today it didn’t seem to be giving quite as much as the ’09, perhaps it’s shutting down to some extent. I would have expected this to be the more open and expressive of the two, but today it was the other way around. In any event, it was superb and both bottles were gone quickly. The elegance and transparency of the Mugnier wines was quite remarkable, a perfect finale to an extraordinary dinner.

  • 2002 Burgundy Dinner (Chef Kang, MacKenzie Road, Singapore): The best of a strong trio of 2002 Bonnes Mares, this was elegance personified. It had a lovely perfumed nose, with green stalked florals nestling amidst blueberries, red cherries, and then gentle tones of damp earth and meat. Beautiful. The palate was what took my breath away though. It was almost ethereal in the way its wonderful pure, transparent tons of cherries and blueberries floated across the mouth on a bed of silky tannins and wonderfully integrated acidity. Completely weightless - it was as if the structure was barely there; just a whisper of tannins and a suggestion of acidity, but all keeping the wine very nicely framed and defined even as it glided of into soft, gentle fading finish. Such wonderful finesse here - almost more Amoureuses than Bonnes Mares, if not for the sense of Grand Cru depth that this offered. I have always found Mugnier's Bonnes Mares to be on the lighter side, sometimes to its detriment, but with a strong vintage like 2001, this really came into its own. It was drinking perfectly on the night as well. A wine of wonderful finesse and rare elegance; I could drink this by the bucket-load.

  • Astonishing to reflect on the fact this is the 11th bottle I've been priveleged to taste in the last 5 years. Remarkably consistent, this is the sweet spot of red Burgundy for me.

The biggest difference I'm noticing lately is more wood on the finish when it's first opened. This used to be grand as a pop and pour, now it needs some time to stretch its legs. The aroma remains stellar, but the fruit is subdued until the wine has had some time to breathe.

Let's talk about that aroma. It's not just sexy, it's downright salacious. Soil, flowers, sauvage, spice in perfect proportion. It's outrageous.

The wine maintains its medium dark color little sign of aging there. Full in the mouth, rich dark black and red fruits. Long finish.

This is magnificent, reference standard, Burgundy. I'm so incredibly lucky to have been able to follow its development over years; what an education. All these experiences with this wine, and I'm not even close to understanding all this wine has to reveal -- this majestic will evolve and change over decades.

11 tastings in 5 years and I'm just scratching the surface. THAT is Burgundy.

  • La Fête de La Paulée in Chicago (Formento's - Chicago IL): Late night, small glass, brief note. Fleshy ripe red fruit with good spice. Forward and accessible for young Bonnes Mares, with good+ weight and length. Served alongside the 2001, which was almost as interesting but more firm.

  • La Fête de La Paulée: Tasted side-by-side with the 2001. Contrary to what you might expect given vintages, the 2002 showed much more approachable, forward and delineated. Full, open nose has good detailing of an array of red an black fruit. The palate is showing open knit and well integrated. Surely this will get better, but already quite good now.

  • Soft, elegant, beautiful, intriguing - for me, this is what it's about. I am absolutely smitten by this wine, the beguiling aroma, the softness and tremendous length.

  • My fiancé, aka the Swedish princess, takes first whiff and pauses dramatically giving me "the look."

After a moment of reflection comes the first sip. And her erudite commentary: "WOW... this is good sh*t"

I doubt I can do better to describe this wine than she has done so efficiently. But I'll try...

What I love about Burgundy is the magic. The singular experience that turns a troll into a poet. What I hate about Burgundy is those experiences are rare as hens teeth. We must kiss many many frogs to find a prince.

I was lucky enough to acquire a case of this wine and each bottle has been better than the last. The aromas are heavenly, flowers cinnamon plums. Color is garnet with a slight tinge of brown. This wine is absolutely open for business, as the saying goes.

Finish is... forever. So long, light, and elegant it floats. Plum, cherry, sage, mineral, cinnamon, and much more than my words can identify.
It's a miracle to get one bottle of Burgundy this special. It's been an absolute privilege to follow this wine over the years, and each time to be treated to the grand and majestic experience we Burgundy lovers cherish.

This is one to seek out, my highest recommendation. Cheers friends 🍷

  • This wine is absolutely world class. Bottle was pristine, and it showed brilliantly. Served blind against some serious competition - e.g. '93 Dujac Charmes, '90 Mongeard Mugneret GE, and a bunch of others - and it came out on top. There's a purity and depth that was totally evident to every single taster at the table. One of the finest Bonnes Mares I've ever tasted, consistently.

  • OMG! This may have been the best bottle of wine I drank so far this year. Absolutely stunning. It had it all; intoxicating bouquet, silky palate with lush ripe fruit and a monster of a finish. Truly a wine with soul!

  • Beautiful bottle. Decanted for about 90 minutes. Should last for many, many years, but very enjoyable now.

  • Youthful exuberance bounding from the glass compared to the 00 Mugnier and 01 Vogue Musigny beside it. Young, fresh, great energy and brightness. A polished, pretty wine that settles down in the glass and begins to show a deeper, darker side after about 90 minutes. I love this wine now, and it's tough to keep hands off it, but patience will be rewarded.

  • Once again, an extraordinary and beautiful wine. Astonishing, crystalline purity. Long, complex, bordering on addictive. Very few wines this young I can recall liking more, a true superstar. My highest recommendation.

  • I drank this wine a few weeks ago. In a word "Disaster" harsh dry bitter tannins no fruit to speak of. Gave the wine hours of air time hoping it would smooth out, well you can forget about that happening. Medicinal cough medicine, opposite of silky. A most unpleasant wine. And at these prices it's just a disgraceful ripoff.

  • A superlative wine and a magical moment indeed; aromas of red flowers, red and blue berries, wet earth combined in the most exquisite, refined texture. For me to describe this is like trying to describe how a stunning work or art is...but this was yet another example how the combination of depth and purity can exist together. Can human be profound and yet pure in our soul Probably with everyday invested in the meditation It was a living work of nature, in the glass, as it offered different nuances, and shades constantly without ever fading nor changing its own profile. The only downside is that after an exquisite wine like this, it is actually difficult to go back to a 'good' wine...

  • I really liked this. Started out brighter, then morphed into darker fruits. Drink with pleasure or wait.

  • Recent showings of the Chambolle villages and Fuees gave a hint that this might be ready to drink, and boy was it ever.

Beautiful red fruit, a little more reticent than the two Chambolles with a bit more structure, but drinking really really well.

  • My highest recommendation, this wine is absolutely spot on brilliant at this stage of evolution. Perfectly balanced, elegant, with an unforgettable finish. Very seductive, graceful, this is not a power wine but it makes quite an impression.

If I had a case of this, I'd be popping the corks regularly. No rush to drink, there's a lot of life left in it. Nevertheless, it's so outstanding today that there's not much point in waiting.

  • Red fruit driven - seductive and open; still bits of tannins that will probably soften further but no crime to drink this now.

  • Pure, elegant some acid bit that hurts the intensity and character. Fine, certainly, but not inspired or up to the usual level of Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier wines.

  • Goodbye Dinner for Gabriel's Restaurant (Gabriel's - Highwood IL): Mostly red fruit with some black fruit hints, then great spice aromas. Lacy and spicy from start-to-finish, this is very elegant and well textured, shockingly accessible for a young Bonnes Mares.

  • very impressive. perhaps my expectations weren't high given that Mugnier isn't well-known for his Bonnes Mares, but this was really delicious and fairly approachable at this young age. Very pure and elegant, classically Mugnier I think. Spoke more to Chambolle than Bonnes Mares in particular, but very fine. Long and wide across the palate. Very classy and pretty. A mid-weight Bonnes Mares for sure, but not lacking in anything.

  • super refined, silky, precise, very long; all you would wish to find in a great bottle of Burgundy.
Red berries, cloves, rose petals, slightly saline, with very, very long complex and classy finish.
Not many words need to used for this great wine, which the tastes kept coming back to my
mind the day after. Great pleasure, great class.
