Really nice wine , in a good spot. A great wine to drink with some age on it. It just mellows it all out nicely and really comes together in a decently balanced effort. But I've always enjoyed Mas La Plana ever since the 1996 vintage. A good solid wine. Colour is still dark, purple and red although you can see traces of it browning on the edges now. The nose is a tad challenged ... some forest floor/earthiness, dried berry fruit, ripe plums, with a touch of vanilla on the end. Full bodied, with a nice weighty mouthfeel, but not soupy. Smooth, dusty and drying grippy tannins. Good acidity to help keep the fruit in check from being overly heavy or sweet. Starts with blackberry and cassis flavours. Toasty oak spices, plums and a savouriness hits on the mid palate. Nice decent length to the finish ... more spices, and an herbal element. This could age further.

Surprisingly dark-toned, almost completely opaque and still slightly blue-hued ruby red color. The nose is quite powerful and obviously very ripe with somewhat sweet-toned aromas of rich blackcurrant-driven dark berries, some plummy fruit, a little bit of sweet oak spice, hints of juicy red fruits and a touch of vanilla. The wine is full-bodied, dense and slightly chewy on the palate with savory and quite nuanced flavors of ripe blackcurrants, some toasty oak spice, a little bit of exotic spices, hints of ground peppercorns and a touch of succulent plums. Overall the wine comes across pretty broad-shouldered with its moderately high acidity and rather firm and grippy tannins. The finish is long, grippy and savory with flavors of ripe dark berries, peppery spice, some minty herbal tones, a hint of toasty oak and a touch of youthful blackcurrant-driven crunchy dark fruit.
Apparently Mas La Planas need at least 10 years of age before they start to strut their stuff. I've always considered them more modernist and "new world" in style in contrast to more traditional Spanish reds with their obviously ripe fruit and quite pronounced French oak character. However, these wines never seem to be excessively ripe, but instead just enough to hit that nice spot between sweet and savory fruit, yet retaining enough acid brightness and firmness in tannins. The biggest problem has been their rather oak-driven flavor profile, which seems to need quite a bit of age to settle down: although not excessively oaky, this wine is at 12 years of age still quite noticeably oak-forward. However, the pieces are starting to fall in places and the wine shows very nice potential for future development. As the wine appeared surprisingly youthful now, I wouldn't open this bottle in the next 5-8 years. It's getting quite drinkable now, but with a wine like this, you'll want it to hit its full potential - and it's going to take a while more. An impressive effort, recommended.

Near the bottom of the bottle. Opened three hours ago. Had it with beef tenderloin chimichurri and a chorizo cassoulet. This was an excellent pairing.
In the bottle, fine deposit. In the glass, deep black cherry color, bright reflections, just a hint of bricking. Beautiful glycerin tears slowly kiss the glass. Nose of mentol dominates wet grass, macerated cherry and raspberry. Palate is a combination of muted stewed cherry and cranberry, mixed with leather and remnants of oaky vanilla. Medium length with some tanins and earth tones left in the mouth.
Much much better than the first bottle i had a few years ago. At or near peak. May yet improve a little but this was a good night to drink this with a well matched meal with steong herb flavours.

Deep black cherry red, interesting nose of bright, ripe red fruits - red apple, red currant, pomegranate, plus a sidebar of smoky oak - very interesting and alluring - mid weight, well balanced, good tannic support, resolved but still present - definitely on the elegant/feminine side of Cabernet, seems at first to lack weight, but it gains weight in the mouth, and compensates by providing some fine detail - overall, quite charming. Very good length. Now for sure, but will likely hold for several years yet.

Weekly tasting group #215; Old- or New World wine? (@ The factory by MN): In the bouquet dark forest fruits, licorice and vanilla. On the palate dark berries, vanilla, herbs and spices, licorice, chocolate, good acidity and fairly round, but still firm tannin. A mouth full. Beautiful and concentrated wine. Young maturity stage now, but this can easily last until 2020+. 91+

A private dinner (Restaurant De Lage Vuursche, Lage Vuursche, NL): Similar to my TN from two years ago, spicy and leathery, but much rounder and richer owing to a better stuffing of ripe blackcurrant fruit, very lively and youthful after a decade, cool slatey minerality, balanced and energetic, tight even, distinctive character, very good length. Impressive.

Cellier Wine Fair (Hilton Athenaum Hotel): The wine is clean, med to high intensity, the profile is spicy with small red and black fruits, ripe and sweet in the nose, ethereal and welcoming, this what the devil would use. The wine is dry, full body and intensity, big tannins are still going strong, red cherry and berry, cinnamon, nice structure, med length. Even though it feels in a perfect shape and its highly drinkable, I expected more. Outstanding quality, drinking now but will hold

On est loin de ce que Mas La Plana nous avait habitué avec les très beau 1997, 2000, 2001 et même 2004, un peu moins bien que les autres. Nez sur la terre et des notes de réduction. This was excellent but a bit disappointing seeing the wines almost first growth status in Spain. Has attractive precise and distinctive aromas of cloves, blackcurrants, coffee, black cherries, chalk and menthol undertones. Its medium bodied chunky and a little four square palate is not up to the aromas. It has a luxurious texture and very good concentration and a medium long drying and complex finish. Not worth the price.

M'a semblé à point. À boire donc d'ici 3 ans.

A lovely and intense Spanish Cab, quite Cali like, as well as hints of Italian translation of this great grape, but all said and done it was delicious - Dark, full bodied with a nose of black fruit, plum, cherry, cedar, cigar box and vanilla, very well structured and balanced, complex, sweet, dusty on the palate with terrific length, really nice (91 Points).

Decanted for 90 minutes. Restrained nose of cherry and hedge fruit and a hint of oak. The problem is the greenness that is at its heart. It is all pervading but otherwise this is clearly a wine a pointe with good intensity and fruit element. Clearly not a fault - it just detracts from the enjoyment of it. Will drink my final bottle to confirm this note. Drink up over the next year.

(Miguel Torres presentation in Genka offices) This wine has spent 18 months in oak and then another 3 years in the bottle. Deep red color with some hints of evolution in the rim. Dense and complex nose that is sweet and refreshing in the same time. A crystal clear fruity character, liquorice, hints of balsamic and sweet spices. Full in the mouth, heavy fruity tones, high acidity, alcohol sticks out a bit more. This one needs a few more years in the bottle (but if you cant wait go ahead, its great !)

Very vibrant, deep and moreish despite its considerable weight and depth. I found myself wanting to not like this wine before I opened it (international style, or whatever reason I had in my head) but it is rather good and rather grows on you. Time in the glass gives out big black olive notes with crunchy black fruit, spices, chocolate and some greenish tinges. Quite rich in the mouth, but there is some serious structure here that points towards a long long life. A touch astringent on the finish, but this is a young wine that will open up beautifully in time. For £25 very good.

A 4-6 hour decant probably would have been best, since this was showing well at the end of the first night. The nose is fairly heavy on the oak, and evident on the palate, but not overwhelming. The taste is heavy with dark fruit and firm tannins. Hints of tobacco and dark chocolate. The tannins softened on Day 2 and the wine showed even better. It's drinking well now, but should be even better in 3-5 years.

Tasted a day after the Vergelegen Cab 2005 and these wines were very similar which in some way ought not to be a surprise as they are both 100% Cab wines from the same vintage but then they are grown over 5,000 miles apart! Dusty cedarbox on the nose carried through to the palate with a hint of piney tar - old fashioned and good

Hmmm. This needs time. I think it is unbalanced right now and all over the place. Perhaps long decanting will help - I did not do that for this one.. Very influenced by oak at the moment. It was a disappointment and not at all in line with my recollection of htis wine when it was released. It will get better - how much remains to be seen. But the rest of the case will be hidden deep down in the dungeons for many years :-)

The initial opening offered quite a bit of wood on the nose and palate with a tremendous amount of leg. The amount of alcohol did not seem to detract from the enjoyment however. This bottle has been open 30 minutes now and the flavours are coming thru much better. That wonderful earthy tone with hints of mushrooms and cedar. For $16.50 CAD, this is a very nice bottle of typical Spanish wine.
Will put a few bottles away for the future and continue to enjoy others on a regular basis.

50+5+7+11+7+8=88 points Initially, this was quite hot. Lots of alcohol on the nose and a mild burn going down. It was difficult to get beyond this on first pour. As is sat, the alcohol mellowed and gave way to cedar and classic cab sauvignon. Not bad at all, and for $15, a great deal. My recommendation is for at least an hour of decant to get through the intense heat that is there on opening.

Dark redish purple. Real smokey and tobaccco nose, wow, interesting. Really needs decant time to open up, even then the the tannins are drying and a bit rough. Big red fruits fill the palate. Great finish of bright red fruits. Needs chocolate or food. This will mature really nicely.

Faktisk litt elegant! Lang ettersmak.

Tasted on Viking Line between Turku and Stockholm from a half full bottle. A dark red with a violet tinge to the edge. The nose was fairly expressive with creamy cassis, vanilla and tobacco coming to the fore. The palate had strong tannins and dusty black fruits, a bitter, powerful taste with a long finish, in a very nice way. This appears to have the stuffing to last for some time. I got a bottle and will wait at least 4 years before opening it.

Bouquet with dark berry fruits and some smoke. On the palate dark fruits and sweet spices, some minerals, a touch of sweetness and also a bit alcoholic. Overall a beautiful wine. Ready now and the next 4+ years.

I do believe that price matters, this one has spirraled out of control.
A beautiful expressive cab but it might have been my last one.
I can't afford it anymore.

After 3 years in the celler this wine has come out as a very good wine. Soft tannin and perfekt nose we had it with cheese and it was a perfekt match. I think it is close to it´s peak right now.

med-full body, highly bitter and tannic, very fruity, high acidity, medium balance, fruity ending. started as blind tasting: it was far from Cabernet Sauvignon.

Decanted for 3 hours and then tasted over 2 days.

Open and plush nose of red berry jam with mineral, toast and coffee notes. Full bodied with great replays; ripe tannins are accessible but supportive enough to be collectable.
4.5/5

Grand it is not. Plonk. Colour - Deep, blackish purple, no gradation. Nose - Blackcherry. Palette - Cheap, base wine. No complexity, no tannins. Just wino wine. 87? You've got to be kidding. Try 55.

Initially, this was quite hot.

Palate: Rounded, with sweet ripe tannins, good acidity and well balanced.
Finish: Long but I fleet slightly burning sensation...
Decanted: 0 - 60 minutes

Tasted on Viking Line between Turku and Stockholm from a half full bottle. A dark red with a violet tinge to the edge. The nose was fairly expressive with creamy cassis, vanilla and tobacco coming to the fore. The palate had strong tannins and dusty black fruits, a bitter, powerful taste with a long finish, in a very nice way. This appears to have the stuffing to last for some time. I got a bottle and will wait at least 4 years before opening it.
