New Year's Eve Warmup (State Street Manor - Chicago IL): Mature red cherry and berry aromas and flavors with a touch of the sweetness of many good 1998s. Wonderfully balanced that just manages to show its Grand Cru density, with sneaky good length.

PNP and enjoyed over 2.5 hours with dinner. I do believe this wine was slightly tainted but the experience was similar to other recent notes on the board. The nose is great, with plenty of secondaries and a lot of earth, minerals, some game. On the palate it has that '98 austerity to it - even a little rustic on the finish - and yet goes well with food. You keep thinking it will hit another gear but it just doesn't seem ready right now. This bottle faded a bit at the end but I will again say I think slightly tainted and so there a probably better versions out there. A-

Annual gathering with Chicago winos in Chicago (Smyth and The Loyalist - Chicago IL): Expressive youthful nose displaying bright red fruit, strawberry, raspberry, white flowers, cedar, raw shiitake, spicy spices and earth. Very good concentration, very finely layered bright red fruit, very focused and slightly lean, bright acidity, strong limestone mineral, still noticeable fine tannins, and a long bright red fruit driven finish with raw shiitake at the end. This is a very polished slightly lean and structured Richeboug, an iron fist in the velvet glove.

DC/Chicago Wine Dinner Extravaganza (Smyth and The Loyalist - Chicago IL): In 10/09/09/98 vertical with a Jean Gros 83 bonus. Red cherry and berry comes across as both fresh and mature with good brightness and earth working together elegantly. Maturing character is bringing out some sweetness in the middle, but this ends with a wonderful and sneaky long finish.

Dinner with Richebourg 1998/1999 from both Anne Gros and Hudelot-Noellat (RPM Seafood - Chicago IL): In Anne Gros / Hudelot-Noellat 1998/1999 Richebourg flight. Floral and elegantly spiced with both sweet and savory character in charming harmony. In fact, everything is so seamless here. Slowly matured bright red cherry and berry throughout, with good+ weight and length. I adored this wine when younger, but haven't re-tasted in a decade. In fact, I believe it is even better now.

Perfect fill. Great nose out of the bottle and yet this needed 3 hours to really show well. Still has some austerity to it, but dark blue fruit and great balance makes me think this is very good now with a chance for great with a bit more time. Very good with food now, as long as you give it some time in the decanter, but I would hold a bit longer. A-/A

1998 DOMAINE ANNE GROS RICHEBOURG GRAND CRU- had this not followed the 98` Vogue Bonne Mares, it would have stood out even more and it was extra special as is; it had more tertiary fruit with cranberry and wild cherry most evident along with spices and herbs; it was medium to full bodied, had depth and complexity and a finish that went on forever; this was just another spectacular wine on a night of so many good ones.

Richebourg and RSV dinner at Ripple (Ripple Restaurant in DC): Very polished nose displaying beautifully layered red fruits, raspberry and cherry, flowers, sweet delicate spices, tree bark and earth. Delicate and polished palate, nicely layered fresh and vibrant fruit expression, good acidity, nicely integrated tannins and long finish. This is a very pretty wine that nicely expresses the terroir. Perhaps a Richebourg version of Le Musigny.

Dinner with Véro and Bertrand - Somewhat underwhelmed by this wine, was it opened too early in it's life course (in spite of being decanted 2 hours before)? The wine smelled clearly of black fruits, slightly plummy and loads of spices. Bertrand pointed that it could have been a Rhône, and he was absolutely right. The palate was clearly on the strong side, mouth-filling with loads of tannins and great length. A wine with "cojones" for one of the lady's first vintages in command..?

This wine started off the evening with a rather muddled dark fruit nose that was somewhat muted. By the end of the evening the wine was absolutely soaring with finely delineated dark fruit flavors, with soy and tons of Vosne spice. This wine is still early in its evolution and could use 5 more years of bottle age to reach its peak. Drank next to 98 Grivot Richbourg. The Gros was a much more refined, classy wine.

Reserved and shy initially but with airing the wine began to show hints of blackcurrants and underbrush. Secondary flavours will take cellaring before showing through it's big frame.

Bordeaux v Burgundy event (The Square Restaurant - London): The only thing that stopped this wine being truly memorable was because of the Grivot Richebourg tasted alongside it. Pure fruit, amazingly clear appearance with tightly wound up earthy notes. Jeez - needs another 10 years.

Snowmaggeden with Vosne-Romanee (RIA - Chicago IL): Floral and feminine start with great strawberry and red cherry aromas and flavors. Great spice is this wine's most charming attribute. Great acidity and textures. Comes across as deceptively delicate, but this picks up power as it approaches the finish.

Vosne Romanee Holiday Dinner (Charlie Trotter's, Chicago IL): A huge candied red raspberry nose with sappy blue fruits as well. Lots of oak presence here. The palate had nice texture, however the finish was slightly coarse. Quite a bit of grip on the finish.
There was a bit of a dispute as to whether or not something was wrong with this bottle. The person who brought this bottle had it numerous times of the past two years and felt that this bottle was off. Personally, had nothing been said, the thought this was off would have never crossed my mind. My only problem with it was that is was totally out of place with the other two wines in this flight. If I was having it by myself and without the other two Richebourgs, I would have no problem at all drinking it.

Umm...my first Richebourg from Anne Gros, disappointed for the 1st nose...the bad smeel of dirty used barrel, it's not much but it shouldn't have bad smell in the great wine like this. Big mistake !!! A typical Richebourg aroma is interfered by.....can you imagine ?
The texture is nice, lovely tight and the aftertaste is powerful, deep, dense and very long finished.
Depend on its finished...It should get the score 95-96/100 if she used he 100% new oak or clean enough of old oak barrique like Ponsot always did.
You failed me. ( but I should try her 2002 or 2006 to make sure for the thing I believe.)
Drink now - 2020..................91-95/100.........................
ps. This bottle is A.F. Gros, my mistake due to so many Gros. :(

Blunt and rather mute at first but breathed up to be the best drink of the bracket. It’s restrained and compact emitting faint floral whiffs along with some earth and red fruits. In the mouth it is compact and linear with good finesse and highly perfumed fruits. It builds, seems to gain weight with air and really fans out in the mouth once swallowed.

Explosive fruit and spice on the nose, with perfect Vosne style. Palate was starting to show some hint of secondary character, which gave it wonderful nuance and complexity. Opened, decanted, then consumed over the next 3 hours - it kept getting better. This wine was both intense and fun - a great cerebral/hedonistic balance.

Lieu-dit Cru Richebourg Dinner (Primehouse - Chicago IL): Opened 2 hours before pouring. Possibly the sexiest wine of the night, this was a lot of fun. Great spice, great texture and lots of intense fruit. Not the most complicated wine, but really fun and enjoyable. This is a wine anybody and everybody would thoroughly enjoy. Not quite in my top 5, but close. I know it is crazy to discuss "value" in Richebourg, but in rarefied Richebourg context, this is a good value.

Annual holiday dinner with DC winos: fabulous wines kick off 2016! (Ripple Restaurant in Washington D.C.): This bottle no doubt needed more time to understand but in a flight with two other grand crus it was the weakest. Yes, the palate had density and a long finish but I could not get over a certain sharpness to the tannins that detracted from the overall experience. More time needed? Cross the fingers?
