Smelling very much like a classic Bordeaux with cedar, coffee grounds, campfire, currant, cigar, dusty cherry, except for a round, plump, sweetly fruited dimension that suggests warm climate. This is absolutely in the zone and if you have one, drink it now. Old school, mature, poised, sexy as hell, Damn!

4th Saturday Group brown bagger (Our house): Aromas of iodine, dark fruit and plum. The palate follows the bouquet with added notes of underbrush, red fruit and tobacco. Long, balanced finish. Drinking extremely well right now and should hold for quite a few years.

4th Saturday Group. Initially weedy, but developed some green notes and became Bordeaux like with dusty tannins. Resolved very nicely over the course of the evening. Further demonstrates why I lean toward SCM more and more. Not showing any visible signs of age, and would not have guessed 23 years old. Guessed Bordeaux.

Brilliant. Decanted 2 hours and then leisurely consumed over 5. Nose was explosive and complex after the initial decant: rangy and wild, I'd confused it with the CdP that was also in our glasses. Classic and impeccably balanced dark fruit and layered herb. Oak and tannins are still detected, doing their job keeping the classy fruit on its pedestal. One hell of a wine.

What a nice surprise for a 19 year old $15 cabernet. Very youngish color, with nice Monte Bello-ish aroma of herbaceous cherry, pine and oak. Seems some ripe fruit finally made it way into this bottling. Tannin was smooth initially, building with four hours of air. The best Jimsomare cab I've ever tasted, and I've had all from '81 through '99. Bottle #1 of one.

No notes. Classic and drinking perfectly, at its peak. Just a lovely softened structure, with enticing tobacco and cedar, maturing black current and classic Monte Bello ridge character.

Dinner at Chez DrVP Dietz: My first time trying this wine. I loved it. It was the most precise of the Ridges. It was purple in my mouth. Unique flavors. Showing young and lively.

Classic Bordeaux and California Cabs (Casa Dietz - Santa Ana, CA): This wine had an Old World character to it; it could have easily been a ringer in a line-up of Bordeaux. Earthy notes of red fruits, cedar, wet soil, and graphite. Dense and tannic on the palate with a herbal finish. 92-93 points.

Old Bordeaux and Cali Cabs at Dietz's (Chez Dietz): Nose is a bit tight showing some notes of cigar. Well balanced with that terrific Jimsomare acidity. But overall not showing a lot of complexity or depth. Good dinner wine.

Few signs of aging apart from a small bit of lightening at the rim. Overpowering nose with plum, cassis, and berries. Delicious core of dark fruit with smooth tannins and spicy finish. I was shocked at how much flavor remained with this but honestly I think it still has 4-5 years left. Amazing and a terrific surprise.
