from 375ml, decanted 30 minutes (some sediment). Nice bouquet of red berries and spices, a bit of earth. Elegant yet somewhat lush on the palate with spicy blackberry flavors with some minerals and roasted meat. Polished finish with a touch of cocoa and fine tannins. Nearing maturity, yet seems to have the structure for 3-5 more years. More elegant than I would have guessed.

Dark and red fruit, spices, smoke, earth on the nose. Fresh and bright, very energetic and well balanced. Quite elegant. Slightly drying towards the finish. Earthy and mineral. Was served blind in an Aussie Shiraz tasting. The predominant grape variety was rather obvious, but I wasn't so sure about the origin. Drink or keep. 90-92

Aging beautifully. A still dense, precise wine. Opened very slowly, needing 2 hours in the decanter to really start to sing. Nice structure and acidity behind deep fruit. Fragrance comes on late. Still needs time, but the future is hinted at with substantial air time. 93+ in time.

SLDS July 2016: Blackcurrant, cherry, plum and raspberry - really pure fruit on the nose. Palate is bright and while it feels like the fruit is rounding out a bit, especially with a sweet note at the edges, more time is probably needed here. Well balanced and good flow at the moment anyway.

Decanted for 2 hours. Dark red/purple. Quite a striking nose with some fragrant freshness, cedar, vanilla, game and spices. A surprising amount of lifted acidity on the palate with medium+ tannins. Violets, dark berries, earth and minerals on the palate with a gravelly finish. Agree with Pebben, that this has some austerity at present but it matched the roast sirloin we had very nicely. I liked the elegance and this could be outstanding if there is enough fruit to survive in sufficient depth whilst the acidity comes into greater balance. Will not touch another one for around three years which could be a mistake if the fruit dies.

From memory: Enchanting nose with hints of red fruit, mint, pepper, game, leather, vanilla and cedar-wood. Less impressive on the palate, where it lacks the stuffing to balance out the quite high level of acidity. Comes across as touch austere, and consequently needs food to show its best. Enjoyable, but still a little underwhelming.

Better drinking now than the 2010, for obvious reasons! Bottle a touch too developed, suspect not that representative, but still nice. Nose - developed notes, blue fruits, spices and cinnamon. Palate - rich, deep, oak (cedar), vanilla, tobacco, blue and black fruits.

Deep red colour, still some purplish tinge. Nose with ripe dark berries including blackberries, dark plums, spices including clove, some oak and hints of vanilla. Palate with ripe dark berries, dark plums, good concentration, rather good acidity, some spices, a bit of gravelly minerality, medium+ tannins that are still fairly noticeable (even from this half bottle), aftertaste with dark berries and a fair bit of tannins. Approachable for those who don't mind a bit of tannin, but has yet some distance to go, 91 p. From half bottle. (Actually comes across as slightly more in need of time than a 2005 Guigal Hermitage tasted from a regular bottle a few weeks ago.)

had this wine roughly 6 month ago. After opening the bottle the floral and fruit notes were quite hidden, but after 12h this wine shows are very pretty nose of cherry, redcurrant and a bit blackberry. At that point the wood is completely "buried". On the palate the same showing. Pretty stuff. This wine scores with finesse, not with weightiness! Nice! btw: Had the 1995 vintage in 2011 and it was disappointing to me. But the 2005 is nice. Recommendation.

"2014" Sydney International Wine Show - stewarding notes; 10/13/2013-10/18/2013 (Blue Mountains, NSW): {cork, 13%} A sandy, spicy shiraz; any viognier here isn’t apparent; oak is subtle; it’s attractive, medium weight, savoury and dry, but still nicely ripe with red berry flavours. A bit more elegant and restrained than the preceding Graveyard shiraz, but doesn’t suffer in comparison. Can take another 10 years easy.

Ordered in a bistro, by the glass. Dark ruby red, vibrant. Dark ruby, vibrant. This bottle has opened and been keeping in the fridge for a night. Lovely aromas here, sweet red cherry, blackberry with a mélange of sweet cinnamon, ripe peaches, savoriness and smoked meat. The aromas is elegantly present. Medium - full bodied, this has excellent acidity and backbone yet is beautifully polished. I especially enjoy the purity of sweet red cherry fruits, along with energy and lingering with mild spiciness and sweet herbs. Silky tannin with no hard edge. Long, juicy and finished off with earthiness, savory meatiness as well as mineral. This has good upside potential. 90-92+

89 points for now, but likely a few more with time. Yes Time Time Time. Leave it be for at least 5-10+ years. (i seem to be saying that a lot these days, it seems the more older wine you try, the less tolerant you are of young, unevolved wine).

Right now this wine is probably in a not that approachable stage. I think, though, that waiting a couple of years might open the wine up a bit. Decanted for five hours. Ruby red colour. The nose is intensive and big. Spices and meatiness but also some soft smokiness. On the palate it's relatively rich with average acidity. Alcohol comes through a bit with some mouth drying tannins. Somewhat one-dimensional right now.

Intense nose of dark fruits and strawberries. Slightly perfumy and smoky character with notes of salt liquorice, blackpepper and herbs. Fullbodied palate with dark fruit and gentle strawberry brightness. Tannic grip and carrying acidity bringing structure to the ample fruit. Liquorie, oak spice and salty touches. Lengthy. Tight performance and feeling a bit disjointed and all over the place. Needs years (well this was only quickly decanted, longer exposure probably would have helped).

(Dinner with friends at Jade Palace, 13 January 2012 ) From a magnum and decanted. Deep ruby. Nose of grilled meat, dark cherries, black pepper, spice and mocha. Medium bodied, good mouth feel. Very good. Some red berry fruit, but mostly anise on the nose and palate. Maybe bacon fat on the nose, but maybe prejudiced expectations because it's not strong at all. On the palate some minerality also, and a little pepper.

Black cherries, peppery. Good freshness. A bit "animal" (leather) in the nose too, but not annoying. Very good minerality in the palate, red meat sensation... Quite long in the finish. Needs some time to start offering more. A quite light Côte-Rôtie, still a very good wine.

Fantastic aroma and a powerful taste but too grassy and peppery to shine totally. The nose is big, wonderfully fruity at first and there after nuanced with fine oak oriented influences. The body is rather light, acidity medium strong and it has a long finish.

Merci Kitco.

Infanticide! Peppery nose, raspberry, earth.... not overly expressive, some oaky toasty notes. The attack was surpisingly smooth. The tannins not at all agressive. However the fruit was somewhat thinner than I expected, and I could not easily see where it would go from here. Shame on me for not waiting to find out.

Cocoa and coffee from the oak is nicely integrated with earthy undergrowth notes, pepper and raspberry. Nose and palate were similar. A mineral, balanced style but thin on the fruit and not enough weight overall for me to rate it higher. Many 2005's from France are still closed so perhaps this is the case here but I have my reservations given it's lack of density.

Grand Vin Schlossgut Diel and E. Guigal Dinner (Ristorante Bologna, Marina Mandarin): The priciest wine in the line-up, also supposedly the most representative of Guigal's work, but it was unfortunately my least favourite - an opinion shared by most on the table. Sure there was quality of fruit, sure there was plenty of substance, more than the other wines on the table, but this was far, far too young. All its good qualities were pretty much buried under oak and alcohol at the moment. Nose showed lots of vanilla, plenty of yeats and little bits of mineral, garrigue and earth alongside sweet, ripe plums and berries. Godo balance between clean acid, tight but finely crafted tannins and pure dark cherry and cassis flavours on the palate. Good weight too. Unfortunately, the disparate elements came across a bit disjointed at points, with alochol and vanilla-laced oak notes weaving in and out of the wine rather too obvsiouly all the way into the shortish finish. I think this will always be that bit alcoholic, but it should nevertheless improve dramatically with time - just that a lot of time is required. I would give it 10 years at least.

Patrick Will with Ex Cellars (Crow's Nest): Definitely not my favorite of the bunch, but still represents a well made Cote Rotie. Nose is full of earthy funk with that scorched earthiness going on. Ripe black fruits are well integrated with tannin and acid for what was a balanced wine and drank well for hours.

Opened up after about an hour. Tannins are well-integrated, despite its youth its not tannic. Good persistent finish. A nice satisfying wine but lacks complexity and does not stand out.

From a split, took a bit of time to open. Spice, green peppercorn, and raspberry with good acid and a medium finish.

Guigal Cote Rotie Masterclass with Brett Crittenden (Handford Wines, London): Nice on the nose. On the palate it is closed and tight a bit lean too. brooding. Good nose but avg palate summarises it well. Bret said this wasnt the best bottle and that 2005 was probably the best ever B&B. 86-88, needs 2-3 yrs

Medium dark red; intense nose of dark cherries, black pepper, sweet notes; sweet, deep, concentrated, structured, focused, very well-balanced with rounded smoothness, no hints of tannin; very nice indeed and much better than the previous bottle tasted one year ago

The nose and palate both feature raspberry, blackberry, herbs and vanilla. Fruity with light tannins.

Fantastic aroma and a powerful taste but too grassy and peppery to shine totally.
The nose is big, wonderfully fruity at first and there after nuanced with fine oak oriented influences.
The body is rather light, acidity medium strong and it has a long finish.

Merci Kitco.

Dark ruby. Gorgeous nose with violets, black pepper and red berries. Mid-bodied and nicely balanced with soft tanins and a long, spicy finish. Will improve with further cellaring.
