Ruby red color. Black raspberries, blueberries, currants, plums, dark chocolate, and licorice, with hints of floral and herbalness in the nose. Lots of concentrated red and black berries in the flavor. Very nice mouthfeel, full bodied, complex, medium+ acidity and a long finish.

Garnet brick in color. Beautiful aromas of red berry liquor, spicecake, lavender, herbs and hint of forest floor. A medium to full bodied palate reveals sweet crushed red berries, baking spices, medium (-) acidity, and a long herbal/fruity finish. I had low hopes for this 2007 - but this was quite good. Perhaps serving it slightly cooler helped as well.

Bought at the domaine in 2009 and stored in cool basement or wine fridge since. An overwhelming disappointment. This was tired, baked, stewed, short and simply monstrously dull. A glass was consumed, the rest went into the cooking. I don't think this was faulty, but rather another victim of 2007 in Chateauneuf, much like 2003 or (to some extent) 1998. A wine to be drunk while young for all it's exuberant and OTT energy.

Dark toned nose with ripe fruit. The palate is ripe and very fruit forward, filled with dark chocolate, kirsch, raspberries, spices, umami, flowers (violets), red cherries, hints of garrigue and orange. No oak. Mellowed tannins, lowish acidity but the fruit has freshness despite the ripe character and this carries the wine nicely. Big round aftertaste. Enjoyable and drinking well now. To some this probability is a bit too much with the stewed type of fruit and high alcohol.

From our cellar. Full bodied, very concentrated fruity flavor. Lots of red fruits and berry flavors which gives it sweetness, and a touch of orange. Hints of meat & herbal notes are in the background, but not much. The Grenache really shines through. High alcohol, but it's not noticeable. Super smooth mouthfeel. Delicious now and should be for a least another 5-10 years. Will try our next bottle in 3-4 years, if I can wait that long. :)

Very ripe dark cherries and red berries as well as balsamic acidity in the bouquet. On the palate juicy, with herbs, meaty, a lot of sweetness, concentrated and mature. There was a slight –not disturbing- sparkle as well. Mature and beautiful wine.

Medium ruby in appearance with very little lightening- impressive color for a CDP at age 14+.
Pronounced and evolved (and exotic) nose of blueberry and blackberry liqueur, baking spice , smoked meats and other savory elements. Very impressive nose , especially for fans of the style.
Full bodied on the palate, with excellent flavor concentration and mouthfeel. Still plenty of structure belying the reputation of 07 as being "cooked. The finish is long.
Overall very well done with no signs of fatigue , but with Grenache one never knows, so I would drink up! PS- this bottle was purchased on release and was stored under proper condition ever since.

Dark ruby with light bricking. Superb aromas of dark cherries, garrigue, licorice and hint of camphor. Lush and silky palate shows crushed sweet-tart dark cherry compote, savory pepper, medium (-) acidity, melting tannins and a long floral and licorice finish.

So disappointed with this wine. Several bottles have the effervescence that others have mentioned. Not sure if it was bad transport/storage or something else. Annoying and a waste of money.

Not much development since my last bottle 18 months ago. Smokey, full bodied and intense. Not as fruity as when younger. Unfortunately some alcohol pushing through. I think I will try to save my two last remaining bottles for a few more years to see where this is going.

my last of a half case... lots going on here. nose is fresh, lots of red and dark berry fruit, herbal, mint, pepper, spice. palate is smooth, silky, sweet notes swirl, mild acidity, and some pleasant tannin. there is an ever-so-slight bitter note on the finish (i've noted it in the past as well), but other than that, this is absolutely lovely. best showing yet.

This bottle did not show well. Expecting much more based on recent reviews. Stewed fruit on the nose and on the initial taste. Finish was OK. Finished the bottle on day two and the stewed fruit and prunes had settled down so an improvement but nothing special. One bottle of this vintage left so i am hoping for a better experience.

Frank over two days. And drank over about 48 hours. Kirsch black cherry and tapenade on the nose. Soft on the palate and lots of mouth coating dark fruit with leather and spice. Really wonderful and no need to wait. Would have rated 100 but seemed to lose a little then gain it back over night one then the next day you felt the heat a little and some fruit had faded. But superb even then

Crimson in color. 14.5% ABV. Sublime nose of red fruits, licorice and garrigue. Medium body with ample acidity. Notable balance. Exceptionally rich and concentrated. Kirsch liqueur, raspberry compote, strawberry and roasted herbs on the palate. The finish on the wine is exquisite. This bottle is light years ahead of the same bottle five years ago. I don't really recall many bottles that improved so markedly with time in the cellar. Best over the next 3-5 years.

Way better than last bottle. No effervescence. Huge length. Maybe 45-60 seconds. Think it will actually get better . Still not quite in balance - seems a little alcoholic still but this will die down. Could be awesome in a few years

The nose, with its licorice, cherry, black raspberry, herb and wild strawberry profile is beautiful. On the palate, the wine is rich, full, deep and with darker fruit than expected. Lush and long, with ample, silky, ripe, but not overripe fruit in the finish, this is in its sweet spot.

Drank over rib eye steak as the lock down enters month 6 and continues to decimate my cellar.
Beautiful medium ruby appearance. Tried to find some lightening after 12 years or so in the bottle, but couldn't find any.
Evolved and pronounced aromas of cherry liqueur (kirsch), baking spice, and plenty of herbal elements- thyme, so called garrigue etc. In a bind tasting the aroma would be unmistakeable.
Full bodied on the palate with lost of similar flavor characteristics, decent (say medium) acidity and a long savory finish. This is a very concentrated wine that still has plenty of life. I would drink now, but wouldn't worry about holding for another 5+ years in a cold cellar.
This bottle was purchased on release and stored properly since.

89-90 pts

In the bouquet ripe and mature cherries and some signs of sweet soy sauce. Same on the palate. Some medicine and iodine. Chocolate. A lot of sweetness and also good acidity and spiciness. Powerful wine, but I am not sure if it will improve.

Deep ruby in appearance. Very deep coloration for a 12 year old or so CDP.
Pronounced and evolved nose of kirsch, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, baking spice and exotic leather and savory elements.
Full bodied on the palate, with medium acidity and similar (pronounced) flavor characteristics. The finish is definitely long.
With older vintages of CDP there are no great wines- just great bottles and this was a great one. Who knows if it will keep, so I would opt to drink up.

Two years since the previous bottle and now I am beginning to see some development. Still big and bold but a bit more balanced and less “in your face”. The fruit is settling down a bit and it shows quite a lot of spicy, chocolatey notes. I think there is still room for improvement with time.

Slight effervescence, slight va, but still showing deep intense fruit. Full bodied, velvety tannin with high alcohol but not out of balance. Powerful wine showing notes of black plum, black currant, fig, sweet coffee notes, and spice. Enjoyable but on the border due to the faults present.

I wanted so badly to love this wine. I have had three now over the past year. The first completely gone, vinegar at best. The next wonderful CDP almost as good as it gets and this referment acidity hiding the undertone of what seems and ideal more full bodied earth spice and wild fruit cdp. What a shame and expense given the inconsistency.

88-90 pts

Served at monthly wine dinner after 3+ hour decant. Had a tiny frizzy taste upon open that blew off quickly. At tasting, spectacular CDP. Has the huge fruit of the 07 season going strong, while mixing in just the right amount of pepper and spice and a long smooth but balanced finish--still can go for awhile I think

What a nice Ch9dP. Many people report refermentation in bottle but was not the case with this one. Needs some air to open up. Still tons of fruit on this baby. Perfect balance, nothing much out of tune at all. Soft and silky. long aftertaste. Wish I had more.

Some refermentation in bottle, a problem I have noticed with several 2007 Rhone wines. Keep it open a few hours and it will fade. Taste is all sweet melted licorice, then more melted licorice and then some more melted licorice, followed by kirsch liqueur flavors, some sweet forest strawberries and some classy sweet&spicy Grenache funk. Tannins are soft, acidity is low, there is lots of sweet fruit but the wine is never too thick or too heavy - it keeps some balance. To me, not a great example of C9dP, it is just too ripe - and personally I am not too fond of sweet liquorice flavors in wine. Still a very good wine, but I have had better balanced Cotes du Rhone Villages wines from this vintage. Drink or hold. - 90 points

{bought on release, prof storage, perfect fill. Slightly petillant (gas) on tongue for first 10 minutes, which is not a quality flaw. PopNPour, not decanted}.
Modern style wine with velvety liquorish flavors and ripe, kirsch nose. Rim clearing but still quite reddish, no brick. Complex stuff in palate with flavor sets well described in prior notes, after about 20 minutes quite remarkably unfolds. Flavor sets about fruit, not soil or minerals, great match to some late night cheeses. Very good to excellent length. Very well put together wine; while I am not usually a fan of modern style Ch-du-Pape this lovely wine puts such a bias to shame. At 2 hours after opening still relatively primary although some high toned elements have emerged. Would report on its changes the next day but wife and I killed the bottle! While a crowd-pleaser in terms of attractive, big ripe fruit, this wine has lots of complexity for the connoisseur. At least tonight do no appreciate the minerals described by some other reviewers and by Tanzer. Despite size, no alcoholic heat or burn. If the slight gas might be distracting to you - just pour into a decanter and move on.
-> Some prior notes call this wine thin, or acidic, or shy: This bottle is very big fruit, flamboyant, and rich, which is the way I remember it from tastings on release. Anticipate it may have several decades of life ahead of it based on fruit and balance.

It has been a while since my last bottle and there has been some development but not all that much. The fruit is a bit less in your face and the wine gives a slightly smoky and spicy impression. Still quite young, big and bold. This will keep for ages, and probably also improve.

Based on recent reviews I was hoping for a lot more here. Limited decant. The wine was thin and the flavors very muted. I had some wine left which I transferred to a small decanter. A few days later the real wine emerged. The colour had darkened and it was noticeably darker with a much richer flavor. I opened two bottles and they both tasted exactly the same. My conclusion is that variation in storage conditions must have accounted for the difference in my experience backed up by the change that occurred after the wine had been opened up for several days. Believe the drinking window on this wine. My cellar is quite cool so my wine is likely developing at a slower pace than the wines that were recently reviewed. I will wait several years before trying another bottle or allow for an extended decant before drinking.

This bottle did not show any effervescence and seemed generally correct. It was rather muted on the palate, showing some earthiness and evolution, and surprising restraint. Not as much bottle bouquet as I'd expect at this age. Pleasant. One party really enjoyed it, but I'm a bit flummoxed as to where it is headed. It behaved similarly to a CA wine fading with age. It seems an unlikely age to be in a muted phase, but that is my hope.

Hmm. No evervescence on mine - that would not be normal. Bright fruit, a bit up front after one hour decant, but settled down. Few of the tar/leather dark notes of CdP, but a very long finish, and lovely wine. Just entering its drinking window.

Bright and shiny in the glass, fading at the rim. A soft, candy fruit nose - plenty of black cherry-, pepper and spice - all well integrated. Very balanced and elegant (which is saying something for a 07) and pleasing mouth weight. Nice fresh acidity on the palate and very long and persistent finish. Very good showing tonight

Im not sure if this is defective. It has a tinge of effervescence which shocked me but besides that none of the usual warning signs are there. The palate is full and consistent with a bitter vegemite, which is not my thing anyhow so it's getting sinked.
Slightly frizzy at first, or at least very agitated - deep ruby - plummy, rich, Xmas cake nose - rich, choco palate, w slightly hot finish - flawed to some degree - not providing much pleasure

Pnp. Showing a little more open than my last bottle but still holding back a little. Super high viscosity. Sweet notes of ripe cherries, kirsch, garrigue, also some ripe dark berries, some seaweed, pepper and sweet spices, as well as some orange/tangerine zest. It's full-bodied, dense and powerful, with still pretty high tannin taming the sweet fruit and good medium acidty adding some freshness too. Long and complex finish. A very impressive showing and this time I'm confident that it will also age nicely for quite a few years. (95+)

Vibrant ruby in color, the wine pops with aromatics of kirsch, jam, charcoal, licorice and pepper. Richly textured, the sweet, fresh, strawberry, and black raspberry notes are pure and precise. Expressive, lively and supple, this is really singing at the top of its lungs today. This is a super wine in a really nice style.

Monthly Tasting Group HWS #097; Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2007 vs 2009 (By RvD): Just read some of my previous notes and I am happy to say this wine came out of its dumb phase nicely. Beautiful, still somewhat locked bouquet with red berry fruits, garrigue, some eartiness and a beautiful dose of good oak. On the palate a beautiful and harmonious wine with good garrigue, pepper, lovely oak, a beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness and round tannin. Good freshness and really enjoyable now. Will drink lovely from now until 2020 and by then see if there is more future in this wine. Have a few, so there will be a follow up. 93+ for tonight.

Crimson in color. 14.5% ABV. Heady aromas of red fruits, kirsch, garrigue and licorice. Medium body with medium acidity. Sweet on the palate and bordering on Port like. Kirsch liqueur, citrus and a hint of pepper on the palate. For my tastes this wine is just a touch too ripe. I can see the controversy surrounding this vintage. I'll roll the dice on my last bottle and open it in 2020 or so.

3 hour decant. Very awkward nose of strawberries, pineapple and gooseberries... Low acidity on the palate, sweetish and muddled. Bitter bananapeel-notes on the fisnish, some fresh green herbal action, too. Don't know what to think of this wine... Disharmonious.

This wine is marred by a slight petillance, as noted by me and many others. I won't call it flawed, bit it is an average wine at best. Very disapointing at my cost of $55. People scoring this in the 90+ point range and up are either drinking a different bottling, or perhaps caught it before the secondary fermentation occurred. Simply not good.

Dubbelblind. Donkerrood, zeer visceus.

Decanted for 2 hours. Dark ruby/purple color. Very high viscosity. Pretty explosive nose of kirsch, garrigue, cassis and some pepper and sweet spices. On the palate there is tons of cherry and kirsch, garrigue, licorice and some jammy overall impression. It's full-bodied, has high but silky tannins and a medium acidity. It is so dense an jammy, it feels almost sweet. But there is enough structure from the tannins and the acidity to balance the opulence. Super long finish. RP rates it 98+, which seems to be a little generous at this stage. Nevertheless, this is a super-concentrated, dense Grenache-fruitbomb. Maybe some more bottle-age will add additional aromatic complexity... To be totally honest, I have a hard time understanding some of the other ratings here...

Weekly tasting group #075; A fully blind test. (@ RvD): Blood red. Ripe red as well as black forest fruits in the bouquet. On the palate a concentrated wine with mainly red fruits, some white pepper and some chocolate. Ok acidity and soft tannin. Revealing this was a C9duP Ferrand was a disappointment. It was so lush when it was really young, but now it is just a good wine. Will more ageing give any improvement….? Not sure… I have a few, so there will be a follow up.

Very dark ruby-purple. Initially restrained nose, started to express itself after 1 hour of decanting to reveal extemely complex aromas of kirsch liqueur, dried flowers, sweet spices, pepper, meat and jammy berry fruit. One of the most complex and concentrated noses I have ever come across. Full-bodied with big fruit, huge extract, massive but juicy tannins, moderate acidity and noticeable sparkling that somewhat spoils the overall experience. After prologed decanting and ...shaking, the bubbling effect started to disappear. Very long aftertaste. A monster of a wine. Still very primary but so enjoyable once the bubbles stopped being noticeable.

Two bottles from the same case and both shared the same flaw(?) of brett, sulphur, low fruit and spirityness. I hope this is a phase as the clean bottles I hard a year ago were fabulously fruited, nuanced gems. Very odd, extremely worrying.

This is quite an impressive wine, but a bit over the top for me to enjoy it fully. Loads of dark, ripe fruit and blackberries. Loads of kirsh, meat, licqourice and spices. Really big and full bodied. Very good, complex, long, interesting and well made but lacks elegance and could use a bit more acidity. Perhaps it will settle down a bit with time and find a better balance. I'n not surprised Parker likes this wine, though.

A little better than last time but not impressive. I was expecting more. Color is medium ruby. Ok upon opening the wine has so much CO2 as if it were a sparkling wine which is a little off setting - with a lot of shaking it dissipates... Nose has nice cherry fruit with lots of dark spices, licorice, tar and garrigue. Palate is fruity with quite high alcohol, medium acidity and soft taninns. Typical Grenache dominated CdP that needs time.

I tried it over two evenings. I didn't like any of the evenings. I didn't know that they had started to put alcoholic marmelade in bottles. It is super jammy and too alcoholic. I don't like its sweetnes and to me it is completely out of balance. If I have to find something positive about this wine it must be that I don't have any more of it.

Can't add much that hasn't already been said about this wine. I agree with everything written below me here, except maybe Ive Marx. That's the wine I was expecting, but it's still a bit tight and shy right now; at least my bottle was. I have a few more bottles left, may give the next one a few years. As a side note, I did expect this to be tight. I had the '07 Clos Des Papes, and both wines started out the same; tight and not showing off much. The Papes exploded after about 2 hours in the decanter and turned out to be one of my favourite wines ever. I thought the Ferrand would do the same, but after 6 hours it was still playing coy.

The wine is obviously not ready to drink now, although I did not have the chance to see how it would evolve had it been decanted. Initially I was shocked and experienced an anti-climax as I was expecting too much from this wine and the wine was far from perfect. For starters nose, although endowed with deep fruit, had an unappetizing green geranium note. A friend said it reminded him of rancid watermelon and it sure rang a bell. The big shock was to come from the palate though: the wine had CO2 as if it had refermented in the bottle. I am disappointed and I hope the wine will get better, as I have two more bottles. The fruit was ripe to point of being overripe and jammy, and this is something that the best CdP ought to avoid. On the other hand it has a massive structure which hints at a long ageing potential and an interesting aromatic complexity beyond the deep fruit aromas I already mentioned, and was mainly herbal (thyme, garrigue, sage). Difficult to score such a wine. Yet despite the 'faults', less than 90 points I cannot give.

One of my weirdest wine experiences ever. After opening disjointed almost to the point of giving the impression of refermenting. Then the next night a complete transformation. A hedonistic fruitbomb with an intensity beyond belief. A Grenache tsunami. Incredible.

An awesome wine, still very very young and with further maturation and balance I anticipate easily adding on 2 points. Enjoyed with Kim at a recent Rhone wines wine dinner in Charlotte at the Pewter Rose. Deep ruby, medium to full bodied, very complex but not yet balanced with a bit of a cacophony of flavors, an unbelievably long aftertaste. Huge dark fruit forward nose, very aromatic with a hint of black pepper developing in the glass. Primary flavors complex but unbalanced and a bit all over the place at this point in development, main flavors at this point were primarily herbal including sage, some sweetness, pepper and a lighter lavender or perhaps minty note on the aftertaste - the heavier earthier tones to yet develop. Expensive but I highly recommend this despite the price point, this wine clearly needs at least another 5-7 years to enter a reasonable drinking window, will then have 1-2 decades of cellar life left and on full maturation I believe this wine will be truly extraordinary - certainly even at this early point this wine supports the general recognition of the overall very high quality of the '07 cdp vintage. Drank against an '07 Charvin cdp - the Charvin currently more approachable but I think this will eventually be the slightly better wine.

Very different experience from 1/10 bottle. Fruit seemed cooked, almost harsh & the alcohol was prominent. Wine was decanted for 2 hours & in its defense was probably served too warm. Stuck it in the fridge for 30-45 minutes, which helped, but overall it did not have the nose or balance from previous tasting. I still think this wine has the stuffing as it is loaded with fruit.

The wine seems to be closing right now. The bouquet doesn't offer what it did some months ago and in fact it is the same in the taste. There is good soft fruit and tannin, a little tar even. Overall it is lacking real depth at this moment. It could be bottle difference, but I think it is the stage of development. Maybe wait a few years before opening the next bottle. For comparison I enter my (double blind) score.

A few 2007 Chateauneuf du Papes in Highlands: Whoa! This is the real deal. I drank this next to a Charvin and a Prefert Favier, and I for my taste, this was the best. The Ferrand had a soaring red fruit profile and was loaded with Southern Rhone markers like sage, aromatic dry bushes, Mediterranean spices, and lavender petals. It was wrapped in a wonderful and firm earth elemental mineral blanket. This is awesome and will get better.

This is beginning to shut down a bit compared to my last tasting in Oct at the winery. Dark raspberry ganache, with violets, incense, and huge minerality. Tannins were clamping at first, but this really opened after a couple of hours in the decanter.

For such a young CdP wine - this thing was awesome! Press aside, the complexity on the nose was incredible. Interestingly, the nose started to fade a little as the wine decanted, but initially after the pop & pour it blew me away. The palate is deep, rich & mouthcoating - the finish stuck with me for over 30 seconds or so. Many layers going on here & can't wait to see how they evolve over time. Great purity of fruit here & well balanced despite 14.5% alcohol.

Peter Weygandt tasting at Hinton's (Hinton's Wine Store): Dark ruby. This one is a bit tough to assess. I had two pours of it, from different bottles but within a half hour and they were VASTLY different. The first showed an odd nose of iron filings, volcanic rock, undertoned lanolin, but no fruit on the nose, but with dark cherry, roots, and pepper on the palate. It was good, but strange. On a second pour the wine was much more vibrant and open, more intense, and with a far more prominent tannic structure. Neither seemed in the realm of 98 pts, but I'm willing to say I was wrong in a few years if you pour it for me then. 90-95, shading the benefit of doubt officially to the second one.

92-93+ pts

Occasional tasting group: Extensive Southern Rhône tasting with some extra's. (@ PVa): WOW! Unexpected from this domain, but what a juice! This must be their best wine they ever made. Complex, beautiful oak, a lot of garrigue, soft tannin. Super! So young, but so beautiful. I wonder if it will be better in the future, but this sure has a future.

Really agree that this was one of the top wines of the vintage, lots of deep sappy dark raspberry and cherry, herbs, soft garrigue, warm stones, layered, still very youthful, sappy, bitter Grenache note; delicious and room for improvement, 94+.

92-93+ pts
