Magnum. Opened it and tasted, extremely tight and bitter. Color was antique transparent at the edges. Left in glass for an hour with no change. Then double decanted and left cork off bottle for an hour. Went to dinner and the wine had transformed into deep rich color, full bodied, long finish, displayed fruit forwardness of Cali Pinot, but had depth to it as well. Drank beautifully. Don't give up on it if it first displays poorly from the bottle!

Nicely mature red and black cherry with bits of earth and sweet spice. Good weight, better length, and even better yet balance. A very elegant Sonoma Coast Pinot that is not even close to losing steam.

Time has been really good to this wine. I wasn't sure if it would improve or not, but it did. PnP. Beautiful nose of raspberry, plum, cherry, spice and vanilla. Great flavors of cherry, raspberry, spice, vanila, plum. Medium bodied with a medium silky smooth finish. At a really good place now. should be good for another 3-5 years at least. My last bottle, and the best of the group.

Powerful nose that really opens up the nostrils (higher alcohol?).
On the palate, very ripe cherry and spice. A touch of heat but not particularly dense. Quite grippy on the end palate. A little difficult to get the style.
Guessed Californian but no note on what the producer may be.

Tasted blind as a part of an '07 Cali Pinot horizontal. Randomly placed in the same flight at the '07 Kutch Sonoma appellation wine, which showed better (more depth, brightness, nuance) than this one. The McD was good but relatively simple in flavors. Well balanced but lacking depth. Solid but no better. 89-91 points.

with a short decant then into glass, at first some candied notes, not so enjoyable, but this blew off after another 30 min. and settled into a rich, rounded wine with great depth and red fruit, tannins and acid were in check, only negative but normal is there wasn't much, if any, complexity in this. Time to drink

Aromatic nose with dark raspberry, dried flowers, nutmeg and other baking spices. Medium bodied on the palate with round, plush raspberry and black cherry fruit. Good juicy acidity at the core provides lift and freshness. Flavorful finish is layered with fruit, herb and spice. Still drinking quite young and holding just fine though I don't think this gets better with more age.

Upon opening there was a red fruit, plum and bacon sort of nose. Wonderful cranberry, tart cherry and ripe raspberry thing going on in the palette along with noticeable tannins which suggested this wine had a lot of life ahead of it. All this balanced by a cold Sonoma Coast acidity. A lot of interesting things going on here. This wine is definitely aging gracefully.

Enjoyed over 4 hours while watching the ND game. My experience mirrored Parker’s as it initially showed notes of sour cherries, damp earth and mushrooms, but with air the nose showed more dark fruits and loamy earth. A really good wine that had good acidity but with also great feel and weight.

First bottle I bought of Jamie's wine when I met him in 2009. Has held up well. Appearance is inline with what you'd expect from an almost seven year old CA Pinot. Cherry red, with aromatics to match. Extremely soft tannins, with medium/low acidity. More cherry on the palate with a medium finish.

Opened by LostVerse at the Pork and Pinot offline. Only the 3rd Kutch I've tried and liked all of them. This had a creamy texture and a fuller body. The tannins were still pronounced but approachable in this wine. Notes of taosted oak, cinnamon and a touch of scotch whiskey. 92 points.

Slow oxed 2 hours rather than decant as it was deemed near ready to serve. Light violet color. Just a terrific wine that was mineral-driven, slightly tense and with deep, texturally complex palate. Was a great match for pan seared Cali halibut with roasted peppers. Seems to be at an optimal point, but no signs of impending decline.

More or less consistent with the tasting note for our previous bottle; the biggest differences are that the heat and tannins have significantly receded, but at the same time, the fruit has backed off as well, so we're left with a more mineral-driven wine that is at or near maturity.

Blind Tasting Kutch Pinot Noirs (Tom's House, Palo Alto, CA): Red cherry and baking spice nose. Nice, easy red fruit, some floral notes, hint of spice and fruit skin tannin. Not much structure here but it's drinking really nicely right now. (my 4th, group's 1st)

San Diego WineSpectator.com Offline, 4/12/2013 (San Diego): Clear cherry-ruby color. Attractive bouquet of raspberry, cola, stewed rhubarb, smoky oak, animal fur. Pleasantly tart red fruit on the palate, with some sassafras. I guessed New World pinot noir.

My first Kutch from McDougall Ranch. Pop & pour: Nose of red berries and baking spices. On the palate, the red berries dominate the entry and then quickly transition to spices and a little smokiness on the finish. Nicely balanced with minimal, if any, heat on the finish.

Spiced red fruits and brown sugar aromas. In the mouth, this is just too full throttle for me, which says more about my palate than about this wine I think. It's not overblown or anything, it's just got more fruit and alcohol than I'm interested in. I'm sorry to say this doesn't push my buttons.

Memorial Day weekend wines at Mike's: This took an hour or two to really show it stuff. Luckily, there was plenty left at the end to go back to. At first the nose is about bright cherries and some root beer, but with air the funk and warm earth comes out. The palate is simple, but again, air unwinds the layers showing a much more complex wine. Nice acidity although not dominating. Very nice wine, but needs more time.

Opened not decanted. Served with a roasted chicken. 3rd bottle of the evening. Drinking it again on Day 2 and writing this note. Last night this tasted very young with dark blackberry notes ending with a red cherry finish. Today, tastes pretty much the same although the heat is more noticeable on the finish. I can't tell if this needs more time or is beginning to come apart. This may not be a long term ager. Good.

14.1% alcohol. Dark cherry color. This surprised me with how open and ready to drink it is. Lightly jammy edge to the cherry and blackberry fruit on the nose, with plenty of earth and spice notes. In the mouth, velvety and pure, with a surprisingly riper profile to the fruit, although it is balanced nicely by earth, plenty of acidity, and a caressing finish. Drinking well, and I agree with Dennis that it probably won't make old bones. Should reward another couple years pretty nicely, though. A-

Lean nose of flowers, tea, and red cherries. Pure red cherries, tea, good acidity and medium light mouth feel. Medium finish. Great balance, slightly austere. Preferred this slightly to the Kanzler, though surprised this had a higher ABV on the label as I detected no heat on this and a touch on the Kanzler. Still one of my least favorite vintages, though I certainly prefer the mountain fruit to the valley fruit.

Thick, chewy at first and really rounded out after about an hour. Nice sense of forest floor and dirt with big dark red and blue fruit flavors. Pomegranate, red cherry and black raspberry all mingled well together. This is a youngster and will only get better in a few years.

Poured blind, most people guessed Burgundy and really enjoyed this wine. Moderately ripe fruit - mostly red cherry and a hint of blackberry on both nose and palate. Good spice aromatics. Good weight, nicely refined the tannins and good acidity. This wine had a very good texture that showed far less heat than 99% of good Sonoma Pinot. Well done!

Raspberry and cranberry fruit, some definite tartness. Very soft and plush mouth feel. Very lovely garnet color. Light on the tannins and finishes acidic. Paired well with ham for Easter. Keep the next bottle away anything too fatty.

Second bottle for Thanksgiving, decanted for 45 minutes before service. In the glass, clear ruby red. On the nose, a huge blast of pinot spice, lots of nutmeg and cinnamon. On the palate, more of the same; this wine is extremely forward, with the dark cherry elements almost immediately overtaken by the spice, and a long, somewhat hot finish. A little out of balance, but if you like CA pinots young, this will probably be right up your alley.

Blind Reds (Roberts House): Tasted blind. much more full than the artesa pinot, this was clearly a california Pinot, and I figured it was the Kutch I had brought. This had excellent complexity with great expressive fruit with a nice lingering finish. Very classy wine.

My lack of patience gets the best of me as I kill the last of my 750ml bottles of Kutch Pinot Noir tonight. This bottle was pretty much identical to the previous bottle from a little over 3 months ago and as much as I would love to see these babies get some age on them, they are absolutely delicious as juicy little infants. Hopefully I'll be able to keep my hands of the magnum for a while. Only time will tell.

Pretty nose. Balanced and smooth on the palate with blackberries, raspberries and sour cherry. Has the structure to age nicely - most of the notes I read on this said to drink up, but I think giving it another 6 months to a year will be rewarded. 91+ now with the potential to go up.

It is worth taking note of the color and clarity of this wine. As with the other two 07 Kutch wines, it is a gorgeous, crystal clear, dark red color that you could easily get lost in for a while. The nose on this was a little subdued for the first hour or so but once the wine came up from cellar temp, it opened up with some nice black cherry scents mixed with a touch of cocoa. Flavors are ripe and fruit forward with lots of plum, cherry, and ripe raspberries. Finishes long and smooth with just a hint of oak. While some may want to sit on these bottles for a few years, I think they are drinking fantastically now.

Tasted at the Ferry Plaza Wine Bar in SF with Jamie Kutch in attendance. The bottles were opened just prior to tasting. Initial smoke with oak on the nose. Fruit profile was very narrow and tight. As it opened in the glass, blackberry and blueberry notes ending with a sweet dry finish. Very young and needs cellar time.

The wine had a strong, bretty nose. Ended up pouring down the drain.

7/16/11 Took my own advice and paired it with a shrimp Louie. Worked pretty well, proving the point that you can have red with seafood.

Dallas 2nd Wednesday Group - Valentine Day Special (Urbano Cafe, Dallas, Texas): WIML91-92
Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately.
Garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of dust, white pepper, briar patch and cranberries. Flavors of berries, cherries and a hint of bitters on the medium finish. Medium acidity, firm tannins, full bodied. Drink now with some air time or into the next 3-5 years.

This is very nice. Popped and poured. 14.5% alcohol. Medium ruby red.
Exuberant red fruit and spice aromas. On the palate, rasberry, a little cherry and a touch of woodland spice. Exceptionally well balanced and lively on the palate. Concentrated and focused fruit flavors, dances on your tongue. Lingering aftertaste. Well done Jamie!

Beautiful bouquet. Elegant, a mouthful of heaven. Berries with a slight cola taste. Nice, long and lovely finish. My favorite of all Kutch wines to date.

Kanzler is softer and more elegant. This is bigger and more flavorful but not necessarily better. I like both but prefer Kanzler elegance.

Great texture and balance. Very good red and dark berries notes without that new world 'cola' essence. Still, definitely new world in style. Drink now or hold for another couple of years.

Blind Pinot Noir Tasting (Roberts House): my WOTN. med(-) nose shows blackberry. Palate shows a nice, sweet raspberry, with a creamy mouthfeel that just explodes all over the mouth. Lovely finish goes on, but is subtle. Correctly guessed as the Kutch.

Pinot Noir: Burgundy vs. New World (Our House (2033 Brandywine St., Philadelphia)): Very very good. Probably my WOTN. Deep rich deep red color. Raspberry and blackberry on the nose. Really nice. Elements of spice and cola. Lush and delicious on the palate balanced out well by good acidity. Light on the palate, but in a good way. It is delicate. Very nice building finish. Promising.

CaliCab's Offline (CT): Blind. Nose a bit muted but opened up with some time and warming. Beautiful red with garnet at edge. Red fruit (cheery and some strawberry), floral and black tea. Great vibrant flavor profile with more of the sweet cherry and some darker fruits along with a touch of vanilla and cinnamon. Good mouthfeel and great acidity.

Blind Reds (Roberts House): Tasted blind. much more full than the artesa pinot, this was clearly a california Pinot, and I figured it was the Kutch I had brought. Dark fruit dominates this, with blackberry, plum, black cherry, and earth. Very soft tannins. Medium finish ahs a little heat after 20s. Very nice.

Blind Red Throw Down! (Our House (2033 Brandywine St., Philadelphia)): Tasted double blind. Guess correctly as new world Pinot Noir at a higher price point. Floral perfumed nose with tremendous red fruit. Good red berries. Fresh. Black licorice in there. Dense and concentrated. Tannic with good acidity.
