This is a classic sangiovese wine in the minerality camp not the fruit camp. Nose and fruit were subdued. Perhaps this is due to the age or just the style.

Opened the bottle when our bottle of Lamaione was bad. Let it sit for a half hour or so before tasting. Was fair at best. There was fruit, leather, mushroom on the palate but the finish was harsh. drinkable yes, enjoyable no. The wine had not gone bad yet but it was thinking about it. Tried a glass and then decided not to drink it and opened an Eneo. I have two left somewhere in my cellar. I hope that there will be a better outcome.

slo-ox overmnight then double decanted 2 hrs before dinner. this wine is in an excellent place right now and with proper opening tastes fantastic. Not overly oaky like some new style brunellos, just the right amount of new world for me. Poggio Antico always produces classy wines.

Showing radically different than the other 2 2004 Brunellos from Poggio Antico. Meaning shows its sleek french oak. All of them were good, including this one, just not sure they all three need to exist. Tasty though.

Tasted alongside the 2004 Brunello and 2004 Reserva. My favorite, but maybe I'm just a French oak junkie? Smooth, very polished, no rough edges. Ton of black fruit, with a nice acid/tannin balance. Long fruit finish. Drinking nicely now, well balanced.

A lovely wine however we found our particular bottle to be on the downward slope. Ours came directly from the winery and was shipped to us in Oct 2015, then stored in our cellar. If you have this wine, I'd consider drinking it now or else open a bottle if you have more than one to see where its currently at.

Opened 2 hours before dinner. What a lovely wine — not as much oak as many Brunello wines. Great balance and also no evidence of browning at the edges at all. Great tannic structure with lovely red fruits. Superb — we served this with a leg of lamb. From a bottle — happily I also have some magnums. Yippee !!!!!

Lovely Brunello, particularly if you don't like the extensive oaking that goes on with the Riservas. Lovely, clean delineation of flavours. This really is a "food wine" -- paired with a pork stew. One of the best producers in Montalcino.

Opened two hours before dinner, was going to take to the restaurant, the nose was fine, dark fruit and cherry. The palate was something else when I tasted it, like an unpleasant mushroom taste. I am not sure whether it was spoiled or whether is was just musty and needed more time. I closed the bottle and will reopen and decant this evening to see if there is any change

The first red of the memorial day buffet at the club, we drank a 2007 DuMol chardonnay to start. Fruit on the nose, the palate was dark cherry, leather and a hint of vegetation. Nice finish. This wine is still going strong at 13 years and probably is in its prime drinking window.

This is a really good wine. Poggio Antico raises the bar and I am fortunate enough to have had many of their wines. This one is a little less vibrant. It still all of the structure and complexity you'd expect.
My wife admittedly offers a "lay" opinion on red wines but accurate called this as a "food wine". It's best moment in your palate will be when paired with juicy red meat. The flavor you want to experience is subdued otherwise.
This bottle was decanted with an aerator 3-4 hours before dinner was served. It opened nicely but still has a sort of tight feel to it. With food, molto bene.

This wine was a bit disappointing considering the stellar wines Poggio Antico has produced over the years. I decanted the wine and tasted it over a 90 minute time period as I enjoyed my dinner. Unfortunately, the fruit stayed hidden and never came out. This bottle of Altero was a thin red wine with a hint of fruit that I was unable to catch.

It has been a while since I was blown away, and this wine did it. The nose was dark fruit, tobacco with some herbal notes. Decanted for about an hour. Initial taste was stewed fruit with a very complex and layered finish. Vegetable notes at the back (green pepper). The long finish was smooth and allowed the wine to be savored. The mouth feel was lush and velvety. As the wine opened hints of raisin pushed through without being intrusive. We enjoyed this following a sancerre but I made the mistake of drinking it with my seared foie gras which did not pair well. Popped and tasted, then slow-ox for 6 hours. This needed air, but i fear I gave it too much. Very sour cherry (to the point that some would dislike--not me) and very good length on the pop. Some bitterness and unresolved tannins that didn't work themselves out completely over the first couple of hours, or even by the next day. Still very good - quite a precise wine - med body with tar and licorice and a medium finish that wants to show itself. I hope it gets to where it possibly could with some more time.

Getting a lot of the oak on the nose. Nice notes of tar and dried cherries also. A bit of pine forest floor coming up. Interesting nose. On the palate, it is just so young. Big young tannins. Good fresh cherry flavors. Getting a lot of oak on the finish, which makes sense, since it's made in a more modern style.
