dinner at Jims (guilford ct): this was the wine of the night and as good as wine gets. when they get this ethereal its hard to judge one against another in memory. it was a night of great wines and this La Tach made the 93 look rough and alone i have found it to be wonderful. i cant wait to get to the rest of the 78s and see how they compare. this was incredibly balanced, smooth, great fruit and t its absolute apogee

The nose draws you in. Hoisin, sandalwood, freshly grated ginger and rose petals. It is rich and perfectly balanced. The palate is so silky, building with spice laden flavours and fanning out then lingering for a seriously long time. Close to perfection for mine.

low fill. brown rim, bit paler than the 85. ethereal sublime nose with exquisite floral notes and delicate spiciness. delightful, silky texture. very elegant, subtle, very long and deep; delicious, finely delineated savours, vigourous but less complex, penetrating, and expansive than RC drunk alongside. beautiful faded roses character in nose gradually declines in glass. very long, slow fade on palate with earthy-mineral character, a touch harsh. gamy later with fraise de bois notes.

Complex and ethereal with aromas of rose petal, beef stock, mirepoix, Hoisin, black earth and something sweet and vinous. It is super silky against the gums and there is power without weight. The whole mouth is filled with fruit and savoury things and it builds through the palate, fanning out on the finish. Perfect in every way and in a perfect place.

Endet sehr, sehr, sehr langanhaltend. Was für ein Altwein. Wer das im Keller hat, sollte diesen einfach nur trinken und geniessen. Jetzt bis 2025, 19.5 vvPunkte (97/100). vvWine.ch

lovely dark colour. bright, beautiful nose, a melange of rose petals and spicy fruits, with its typical sauvage character in the background. very concentrated, sprightly, tightly-knit flavour of earthy, mineral-tinged berries with a stalky core with harmonious chords front to back. great reserves slowly evolved over 3 hours to reveal a fabulous, penetrating but ethereal delicacy, a titillating piquancy. glorious, long, mushroom tinged finish.

A special bottle for sure. Spices, nuance and texturally amazing. Lots of high tones fruits mixed with incredible Vosne spices. Lots of cherries and black fruits. This is ready to go and hard to see further development as its pretty out front and giving so much right now. Incredibly pleasurable.

Consistent to my Dec 2016 note. Highly flirtatious nose culminating in an expressive bouquet of sauvage, stemmy rosy florals, and sweet black fruit. Showy and straightforwardly accessible relative to the RC. If being critical, the palate here has aged more than that on the RC and is both sweeter and has greater earth character. Spectacular.

Beautiful nose and a complex but airy attack. This bottle showed slight crimping on the edges of the palate and did not have quite the length on the finish of the best bottles. But fantastic nonetheless.

Romanée-Conti v. La Tâche: Sensational bouquet with stemmy florals, red cherries, and layers of secondary and tertiary Vosne spice. On the palate this has aged beautifully and offers firmly secondary red berry fruit flavours with tertiary spices. Second to last wine of the flight so notes are getting shorter, but this was spectacular.

Perfectly ready to drink, nicely resolved tannins but still some tension left. Velvety. Long and balanced, with a smooth finish. Truffles, roses, tea leaves. lovely aged Pinot sweetness. From a bottle with 2cm ullage. Still good energy left, remained wonderful during the three hours dinner.

Weekend with Eddie - Part 2 (Bouley, NYC): Very good fill. Stunning nose displaying perfectly mature Pinot fruit, subtle ripe raspberry, the essence of strawberry, dry orange peel, decadent light caramel, sous bois, a hint of soy, sweet spices perhaps nutmeg, a hint of Vosne spice, tie guan yin, mushroom and earth. Perfectly harmonious palate, subtle strawberry jam and light caramel driven palate impression, very polished ethereal palate, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, fully resolved tannins and the finish that lasts forever. There is a perfect order and pitch in how each elements express. It is perfectly harmonious and energetic. One of the greatest wines of my life. The taste is still so vivid.

2nd Most Epic Burgundy Dinner (Boulevard - San Francisco CA): Served blind in final LT+ flight. 4.5 cm ullage. Great spice, nicely mature red cherry and berry with earth. Best when first poured, slightly shorter 30 minutes later. From same source an another bottle I brought to this same dinner one year ago, but that bottle had 2 cm ullage, and tonight's bottle was shipped cross-country 5 days before dinner.

Quite mature but oh so refined. A gorgeous nose of Autumn and faded cherries with sweet, decadent earth. On the palate, the fruit has very much faded but what's left is a gorgeous, silky, ethereal wine with incredible flavors of decayed leaves, sweet earth and a panalopy of spices. The finish is so elegant and complex and so fine that I had to slow down to really absorb what I was taking in. There are finely grained minerals and spices that just dance across the tongue and the layers of silk and lace will live long in my memory. At Latour, Crystal Springs, NJ.

Ok but not great fill had me wondering how this bottle would fare. It ended up being every bit the equal of the bottle from domaine last month. Dark cola on the nose with floral notes, light perfume and old dry leather. Multi-faceted and umami-rich palate with light soil, blackberry, black olive and a melange on tingly spices. Very long and complex finish. I had my final taste three hours after the first and almost four hours after the bottle was opened...still going strong and continuing to evolve. Rock star wine...99+.

Most Epic Burgundy Dinner (Boulevard - San Francisco CA): Tasted double blind. Bottle had 2 cm fill and a tattered label. But fortunately we didn't have to tasted the label, and the wine was amazing, in fact my best experience ever with 1978 La Tâche. Lots of mature red berry, dried rose petals, massive spice and smells of the forest after it has rained. Long and unfolding. In a flight with Henri Jayer 1978 Richebourg, these two wines brought tears to my eyes.

Incredibly beautiful aromatic that leaps out of the glass, flowery spice sweet fruit. But on the palete ... a bit tart and abrupt on the finish.

Still pretty dark red in color, wow what a nose, v flamboyant and intense, very floral and full of spices and herbs with slight menthol. Medium plus palate that is still a little tight after 2 hours of decant, good but the nose is showing better than the palate, which is slightly lacking in depth, if the palate can catch up it will certainly warrant a higher score.

Meest oranje rand van de flight. Warme neus, vleesnat, artisjok, jodium. Wilde wijn, onstuimig, poetst de andere wijnen wat weg. Moeilijk in de flight. Heel groot. Ultiem. 19,5 punten Noot: Na ongeveer een uur nogmaals geroken en geproefd (gelukkig ben ik een heel langzame drinker, alle andere glazen waren leeg!!). Fe-no-me-naal! Dan pas volledig open. Legends Dinner at La Paulee de San Francisco (Napa Valley Reserve - St. Helena CA): A very frustrating wine experience. There were multiple bottles since there were 40 people at dinner, and the 1978 La Tache proved the point that there are no great wines, just great bottles. My glass was incredibly muted, perhaps slightly flawed, certainly only modestly interesting. Three people at my table clearly had wine from a different bottle, with lush but stewy fruit that seemed to possibly show some heat damage. At least two others had a wine that smelled wonderfully with great exotic spice, which alas, I was unable to taste. Sigh.

1978 La Tache 97-100/100 [The powerful in pink-ruby jacket]
1988 d'Yquem 99++/100 [I'd like to rate it 100/100, my best Yquem, the elegant]
Big event has gone but I'm still.
Full tasting note will be here when I can get back to my real life.

My 2nd time with La Tache 1978 [Bottle No. 012974 from good cellar in Switzerland]
This bottle performs very very good even drinking it after Romanee-Conti 1990 and other great burg on that night. While Romanee-Conti 1990 is dramatic, La Tache 1978 shows aggressive, plenty of power, strong terroir expressed, full-bodied (even almost pink in color) with the stunning, deep impact, full-dimension and very long powerful finished.
Drink now - 2020+ (Very Serious La Tache indeed !!)
** Today (21.5.2019) with 9 years longer experience, I come back to add more notes, for the perfect condition of La Tache 1978, I believe this bottle can go another 25 years or more. Cheers !!

Asian spice and sous bois on the nose. Displays classic La Tache power but yet the fruit, acid and tannins were in perfect balance. Rich fruit flavours wrap around the sweet tannins to give a perfectly constructed wine. Wow! Only slightly overshadowed by its nobler cousin, RC that night...

Great Vosne Dinner with Friends (Charlie Trotter's - Chicago IL): Gorgeous nose of intense red fruit, great spring flowers, then lots of baking spice. Fresh and dried raspberry and strawberry flavors with wonderful cinnamon and clove spice. Long finish unfolded showing layers of fruit, spice and some wonderful emerging mushroom elements. Seemed to get more exotic and alluring with more time in glass.

Kruger's 75th (Corsair): Do I dare say that of the '78's I prefer the La Tache? I did!! While a bit more youthful, this had showy aromatics of black raspberry, very spicy, red plum and orange peel. Elegant yet rich on the palate with earth mixed with spices, berries, I can go on and on, but my TN's won't do this wine any justice. So let's just end this with this wine was the best DRC, best red Burg ever brought to my lips. Thanks Hans!

Ahhh....even I can feel how good it is but not 100% because of the aftertaste of all those great wines. After 3 hours, the most beautiful fruity of Burgundy scent shows up, very dramatic, multi-dimensions, 3 or more layers, very tempting. Perfect balance, perfect texture, the unforgetable sweetness.
The super elegant finished...it's beautiful and long but doesn't like the blockbuster Tache 1990...Maybe this 1978 is getting ready and more soft or meybe the affect from the aftertaste of Petrus 1990 and Haut-Brion 1989 remaining but anyway, one of the truly greatest wine indeed.
Drink now - 2012 (94-97+/100)
Ps. performance is only 90% ?!?

Very nice cherry and slightly minty nose. More expressive nose than a bottle of 78 Richbourg opened immediately prior to this, although not as much blockbuster fruit as the Richebourg had on the palate. Still very smooth and at the peak of its maturity. An excellent La Tache vintage but not quite an "all time great."

Tasting Group Dinner (Brad's House, Minneapolis): Second time I've had this; from the same case as the previous bottle. Intense, perfumed smoked meat, earth, and wonderfully layered red fruits on the nose. As with the last bottle, the palate fell off a touch, but much less so than before. The flavors are an enchanting, elegant, beautifully integrated blend of red fruits, earth, mineral, and mushrooms. Wonderful silky texture. Fully integrated tannins. This bottle seemed to be at its peak of maturity.

Wednesday Again: The color is a mature light red with orange hues. The nose is an extraordinary expression of cherry, rose petal, orange zest, iron, earth, tea and much more. Pure La Tache. The taste is equally good giving cherry, mushroom, and earth with hints of orange zest. Good flavor intensity but not quite as expansive as I would have expected. Silky smooth texture. Long and satisfying finish. This is obviously a well cared for bottle that is showing great. Paired very well with Chris' porcini and sun-dried tomato risotto.

Jeff took the cork out prior to our arrival, and apparently it was a mess. Bits and pieces. The clarity in the glass was amazing. Beautiful nose, just wonderful. Good palate, but just a bit too hot, and not as lovely as the nose. A small half glass put aside for six hours was, interestingly, all but undrinkable. Overall, a fun bottle.

Tasting Group Dinner (Jeff's House): A fascinating bottle. Jeff had opened this before the crowd arrived (the cork was in miserable shape), and we decided to pour it before it saw too much air. The color is a mature maroon, with strikingly brilliant clarity. Incredible nose -- smoked turkey breast and bacon fat jump out at you, followed by gorgeously effervescent, perfumed layers of earth, spice, tea, and black truffles. The nose was utterly perfect and quite Rhone-like, and reminded me and Brad of the 88 La Mouline. Unfortunately the palate didn't come close to the nose, showing mature, somewhat muted, lightly spicy red fruit, tea, and baking spices. Interestingly, despite its age and several hours of air, this never faded, and seemed to be putting on a little weight by the end of the evening.

A Mid-1980's Tasting of Twenty One Vintages of La Tâche (1945-1980) (Private residence, San Francisco): Most concentrated looking in the flight, but still some maturity of color. Lovely sous bois fragrance, smoke, and some toastiness which really did not develop much over 90 minutes. Closed and tannic, but outstanding balance, sappiness of fruit, and concentration underneath. Coiled and brimming with potential.

Noot: Na ongeveer een uur nogmaals geroken en geproefd (gelukkig ben ik een heel langzame drinker, alle andere glazen waren leeg!!). Fe-no-me-naal! Dan pas volledig open. Ongelooflijke neus en complexiteit. 20 punten

Rare Wine Dinner - quick impressions: Really amazing LT nose, rose petals, a bit of spice, great purity. Thought the wine did, however, not give what the nose promised, a bit thin.

Sigh.

............................................
My 2nd time with La Tache 1978
[Bottle No.
Drink now - 2020+
(Very Serious La Tache indeed !!)

Vosne Romanee Holiday Dinner (Charlie Trotter's, Chicago IL): Seductive, fruit forward nose of wild strawberries with beautful floral notes as well as sweet baking spices. Medium bodied with pretty red fruits, great texture and incredible length. Gorgeous spice all throughout the palate and finish. A real treat.

From Verlin auction. Very good wine tonight, and the WOTN for many against multiple La Tache's. Strong fruit, lots of LT character, nice nose. Good stuff.

Bottle No. 009881
Drink along with :
Haut-Brion Blanc 1996
d'Yquem 1955
Haut-Brion 1989
Petrus 1990
DRC : Richebourg 2001
Drink now - 2012
(94-97+/100)
Ps. performance is only 90% ?!?

Very nice cherry and slightly minty nose. More expressive nose than a bottle of 78 Richbourg opened immediately prior to this, although not as much blockbuster fruit as the Richebourg had on the palate. Still very smooth and at the peak of its maturity. An excellent La Tache vintage but not quite an "all time great."

wonderful nose of cherries and burning leaves. Elegant, loads of sweet red fruits, medium body. This bottle probably did not have perfect storage as is was pretty mature and not improving in the glass

Wonderful, intoxicating nose. Sweet red fruits and medium bodied. While the nose soared, I felt the wine was getting a little tired in the palate (at least this bottle).

G7 (Sea Saw, Scottsdale): Cherries, raspberries and charred french oak. Well balanced and integrated. Some elegance on the finish. The fruit is fading as it sits in the glass. Seems past its prime or not a pristine example. Rather disappointing due to its critical acclaim.
