Drinks and Cards (London): Full red/black. Level just into shoulder. Aroma of spice, currant and touch of blue cheese. Very good flavour of redcurrant, oak, spice, nutmeg, slightly subdued and funky versus previous bottles, but still a good meaty/rich note.

1970 Themed Bordeaux Dinner: Medium shoulder fill. This pours light garnet with medium plus bricking. The nose is of iron, leather, raisin, dried dark cherry, sundried tomato, and tomato leaf. The palate is in tact with bright dried red current fruit, with medium minus tannin, medium acid, and a finish that really shows the mature character of this wine with dried fruit and leather closing things out. All in all perhaps a little bit of of a disappointment from this bottle, but still enjoyable and fully mature, drinking just fine.

Crust on top of cork and top of bottle generally pretty funky. Cork was wet to the top but came easily with the Durand. Decanted and served immediately.
Wine was a good colour with bricking at the rim. Nose was mulberry and mouth was tasty but a little more acidic than the prior week's bottle. Finish was not as long.
Nevertheless a very nice for its age.

Cork was wet to within 4mm of the top and broke even with the Durand. Decanted and served immediately. Wine was a limpid, good colour and did not reveal its age. Nose was mulberry and a little vegetal, but it tasted fresh with great balance and a long finish.

Full red, hint of purple. Perfect cork. Doesn’t look 50 - no bricking. Delightful aroma of cedar. So well preserved, even a touch of spritz in this bottle. It has mellowed to a redcurrant and and oak/vanilla flavoured very fine wine. Meaty, leathery flavours. A little dusty and slight aftertaste of herbs. Superb.

A very tidy wine. Has held itself together for nearly 50 years, still has tannin, acidity and some bramble fruit. maybe the alcohol is a bit out of whack though

5th Growth; Likely at least somewhat along the lines of 70% C.S., 25% Merlot, 3% C.F., & 2% P.V.; Per the bottle, 12% ABV;
N: SMOKE, earth, tobacco, leather, cherries way underneath?
P: Med body; RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish "frt" counterbalanced by a lovely acidity which seamlessly transitions into a LONG, tangy/swt finish. LOVELY stuff for *NOW* (*poss* even with lighter entrees?) & through '21. My EXC/EXC+, but one probably NEEDS to be appreciatively accepting of older wines. 84 pts WS (5/15/93) & 82 WA (12/31/97).

Medium garnet Dry, medium-sized grainy tannin, medium + acidity. Dried cherry, nail polish, leaf, Red fruit, dried cherry, dried plum leaf, cedar, pencil. Medium bodied, medium intensity. Medium- finish.
Quite light on intensity and notes of VA slightly overshadow the positive aspects.

Dinner at Brian's (Moonbeam View): A pleasantly matured Bordeaux- a couple of steps up from the 1966 Cantermerle that we had alongside I think. The nose here was full of toasty coffee notes I thought, almost like Kopiko sweets, along with a touch of tobacco and a good strong pull of cassis aromas. A nice, strong nose, certainly riper than the leafy bouquet on the Cantermerle. Same thing on the palate too - lots of pure, ripe cassis and blackberry flavours wrapped in silky tannins and bright acidity, all the way into a leafier finish. This lacked a bit of the complexity one would expect from a wine of its age, but there was plenty of delicious charm on show. Enjoyable, and drinking nicely on the night.

Holly crap... this may be even better than the '75 we just had. I feel extremely fortunate tonight both for the wine and the company. Great evening with friends, music and excellent vino.

From the Avery's auction; what a bargain! Crispy clear Color like a young Bordeaux with the musky leathery nose one would expect from a Bordeaux this age.
No signs at all of this being over the top. Loving it!

Am Silvesterabend 1015 getrunken. Farbe ziegelrot, nicht zu braun trotz Alter. Nase fein, typ. Bordeaux. Geschmack fest, nicht zu alt, leicht süßlich. Aber jetzt austrinken. Advise to my pretaster: Never decant an old wine like this! It will lose all his fine taste and scent.

NobleRottersSydney - Cellar Treasures (360 Bar & Dining, Sydney): {cork} (Gordon) Barely ullaged. Double-decanted two hours earlier. Looks great; garnet with some bricking. The nose is ancient; cigar-boxes with a musty carpet note. Camphor almost! The palate presents an initially lovely and antique flavour spectrum of leaf-tinged black fruit, soft and gentle, with only the barest of tannins remaining, quite an even light/medium-bodied presence along the tongue, but a rather short dry finish. In many ways it’s quite lovely, but it lacks the ultimate complexity and ‘wow’ factor. On the other hand, what do you expect from a 35-yo 5th-growth? Lovely to find it showing so well. Drink up!

Visual impression: Venerable age with brick red color, thin rime and a light body. Fragrance: Very scent of stables, violets and tobacco. On the palate: Complex wine with well balanced tannins and low acidity. Notes: A well-matured wine that held through the entire dinner despite it's high age, a pleasent wine.

Drank alongside a '70 Chateau Leoville Barton, and the Batailley was definitely showing the better of the two. Musky on the nose with some leather and stable as one might expect from a wine of this age. There is still some strong fruit here - mainly blackberry and currants - with anise and cigarbox. Black fruit and tobacco notes on the palate. Body is medium-light and there is a short but pleasant wild berry finish. Tannins are all but gone. Was a wonderful bottle, but certainly shouldn't be kept much longer.

High hopes, following a strong showing at Robersons' Old Wine Night, plus level still in the neck. Didn't disappoint. Cork crumbled somewhat but still moist. Colour still red, with very little orange or brown at the rim. Nose enticing, all secondary Bordeaux. On the palate medium weight (at best), lovely integrated smooth taste, fruit still there, tannin long mellowed. Finish quite short, but nevertheless so nice to appreciate fully mature Bordeaux still drinking well. Went well with moist roast lamb, and enjoyed the last bits off the sediment with a snitch of mature cheddar. Rare experience, and well worth the punt.

Medium brick orange red color. Prune a little bacon on the nose. The tannins have integrated but are still a little present. On the palate there is some prune and acidity with the slightest hint of maderization (perhaps due to exposure to too much heat?). The fruit in the wine seems to have faded from the description Robt. Parker gave of this wine from his 1987 tasting, but then again it has been 18 years since he tasted it. Interesting although not a great wine.

A sophisticatedly austere but oxymoronically welcoming wine that tastes better when you listen to Abba's SOS.
Completely classical and balanced. Has everything the textbook says it should have.
