Pedro's visit to Tucson: Tasted alongside the '90 and '98 and DRC GE. I was surprised that this wine showed much younger than I thought it would. This is in stark contrast to my notes when tasted 10 years ago. Go figure. Dark, floral, stems and spice. Great structure and fruit but balanced and should develop nicely with time. This has great potential imo...whether or not it will reach the heights of the '90....who knows?

Wines of the Gods (House of AC and JC): Component of DRC Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux vertical. Medium ruby with expansive flower garden nose whipped with essence of Bing cherries, sliding into a savoury palate of Tayberries. Long somewhat savage palate with plum smoked wild boar notes and long to go. A great bottle but clearly smacked out of the park by the 02 LT in this flight. Best 2028-2052.

Very floral, with plenty of dried flower and lavender action. There’s some hoisin and cherry fruit too. It is velvety, with decent flesh and excellent minerally detail. There’s some smoked meats towards the finish and it is powerful yet airy and graceful.

Zachy's La Paulee 2022 (Le Bernardin Prive): 00343/13134. This vintage chez Domaine is always so juicy and showy. Sheer balance and personality holding the ripe fruit and boldness in check. So much going on the moment it touches your palate. Hedonistic. 94.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux / Grands-Echezeaux 2002/2010 (State Street Manor - Chicago IL): In 2002/2010 Echezeaux / Grands-Echezeaux horizontal / vertical flight. The 2002 Echezeaux was more charming to start, but this blew right past it after 15-20 minutes in glass. Floral and perfumed with so much red cherry and berry in front of faintly emerging earth notes. great depth, weight and balance. More enjoyable today vs the 2010 Grands-Echezeaux, even if not quite as concentrated.

DRC GE Lunch: Cloudier than the other vintages, with classic '02 stemmy animale notes. I love the style of this vintage, but this wine comes out as a bit angular at first. It absolutely needed the time in glass to come together, and with air became more rounded and balanced. The layers and detail were impressive. In sum, don't judge this right out of the gate; give it ample time to stretch its legs, and you'll be rewarded.

Roses and truffles almost feel like they dance around in the glass when you sniff. Some form of berries and cherries appear. A taste and it rivals a great Clos de Vougeot in texture. Sublimely silky start but finishes with an absolute sucker punch of acid and tannin. After those tannins fade you get leftover notes of flowers, mushrooms and gorgeous strawberry notes. Very much so still primary. This has a ways to go. I’d expect at least another 15 years before one might actually deserve a revisit.

Grands-Echézeaux Dinner (Summer Pavilion, Ritz Carlton, Singapore): On to the big-hitters now, and this was excellent - probably my favourite of the many Grands-Echezeaux bottles on the night. The nose was pure DRC, with magic whole cluster aromas of meat and earth, brambly herb and wood spice, and then a core of blackberries and plums, edged with a sweeter lilt of cherry liquer and some dried roses, maybe even violets. Wow - that was some nose. It was very full and complete on the palate - marrying the best of the Grands-Echezeaux terroir with the lovely shape and poise of the 2002 vintage. This just felt like such polished wine, with velvety tannins and fine acidity wrapped around a core of sweet dark berries and plums, a bit savoury meat and earth, and just lovely mouthful of warm spice unfolding in the background. Mouthfilling and full, yet this was a wine all bout purity and transparency, with a gentle, almost velvety strength to it. So well integrated too. The finish was midlengthed rather than truly long, but very satisfying indeed, with a quiet tug of warm spice lingering at the end. Super stuff - an absolutely delicious wine, drinking so well now. No such though. This has all of the hallmarks - balance, integration, fruit and structure - of a wine that will age effortlessly through the decades.

Bourgogne 2002 tasting. Many top wines from some of the best producers, Rousseau, Roumier, DRC, Leroy etc; 3/28/2019-4/28/2019 (Restaurant Palægade, Copenhagen): Incredibly beautiful nose which to me is different to other top Vosne wines like for example Cathiard or Leroy, but I can't put my finger on precisely what it is. Perhaps it is a little darker expression, but stil floral and sweet fruited. This wine was also lovely in the mouth with impeccable balance. Other tasters pointed out that it was somewhat shorter than the other wines in this flight and that was correct. Still it was a magnificent wine, that I in retrospect think should be rated higher, but I did put 95-96 on the paper that night, so I will leave it at 96.

2001 vs 2002 DRC tasting with a few others; 10/20/2018-10/21/2018 (Marcel's by Robert Wiedmaier, DC and Bryan's house): Similar to the 01 GE, i.e. clearly more polished and detailed than the first flight bottles, but more youthful and concentrated, and also showing more noticeable stem. Beautiful pure sweet red fruit, cherry, strawberry and rhubarb tart, crushed rose pedal, sweet spices and limestone. Beautifully integrated youthful palate, nicely layered concentrated yet detailed red fruit, silky and polished, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long seamless pure red fruit driven finish with dominating stem at the end. Drinking beautifully but can benefit by additional decade of cellaring as sous bois has not emerged yet.

This bottle was in perfect shape, and showed the wine about as well as it could. These are very nice to drink now, but with well stored bottles there is no hurry. These should be even better over the next decade.

Much darker color than '01, no cloudiness. There was a lot of sweet tart in this wine, it was a bit off putting to me and never seemed to go away. The bottle in no way seemed flawed, don't know what to make of this. Hopefully this is a side-effect of youth, and this will go away with maturity? Disappointing performance today from what should be an epic wine.

AdV once told me 'if you wait 15 years, you are rarely wrong'. He is right, this has really come on and is now a splendid drink. It has a very DRC nose of sandalwood, soy, Hoisin and rose petals. The palate starts off tight and a little lean but really opens up and builds. It is fine, lacy, detailed and long.

This wine was a disappointment. I had exactly the same impression as Daycso of stewed fruit and and muddled flavors. Definitely underperformed its pedigree.

Five DRC Grands Echezeaux. (Bellecour. Wayzata, MN): The 2002 taunted us a bit, as its fruit profile shifted every twenty minutes. Started out tight, went a bit wild, and then settled into a deep rich dark fruit place. It was lovely and very good. The 2002 still needs time (says this lover of 02's), as this was decanted for four hours and could have used more. Certainly in its drinking window, but there is no hurry.

Decanted and immediately began drinking over the next four hours. This is what pinot is all about. Huge, expressive nose and plummy characteristics on the palate. This stuff is gold.

Very concentrated, fresh and pure pinot. Was best at about 1-1.5 hours of air. Great mouthfeel, nice line of acidity through the ripe dark plum fruit. Long finish. Really lovely wine.

Slow oxed for 2 hours. Not much nose. Had nice dark fruit dominated palate at first that then faded over time. Not sure if this is going to improve with bottle age.

Dinner with the St. Louis Crowd et al. (St. Louis, MO): #00513. There's a nice bit of crunchy red fruit on the nose here, as well as a really intoxicating bit of brown spice on the nose. At least on the nose, the red fruit is uncharacteristically (for my conception of the vintage) lean. The palate however, is nowhere as good. This is a bit muddled and stewy, and shows a little more age on it than it should. Fairly good power and concentration, as would be expected, but this lacks any freshness for such a (relatively) young wine.

Food: general western Condition: perfect Duration: 4.5 hours Aroma: strawberries, red fruits, spices Notes: had this with a 2004. You can sense the difference being the fact that the 04 is already showing quite perfectly while the 02 at this age is more sophisticated in the structure and backbone yet the aroma is not as developed as the 04 at this very moment. I'm certain that when 02 approaches its peak it will outperform the 04 but I suspect another 5-7 years of cellaring will bring this wine to its top status. I like this wine but at this moment this is no match for the 04.

As most of the 02 DRCs seem to be right now, the nose was fully open, nicely perfumed and detailed. Red and black fruit, loads of spice, iron and roses on the nose and palate. Wonderful power and complexity. More pronounced iron and a tartness on the finish with air. The stems were evident. Long finish.

Concentrated and long, fruit is not bright yet. This needs time and in the end could be anywhere from 93 to 96 in the long haul. Got some anise and blackberry. Drink in 2020+

Candied nose was not my favorite. Simmered down with time in the glass, and started to experience the elegance this wine should display. If I drank this wine in the next few years I would plan to let it breathe quite some time before serving. Undoubtedly this vintage of GE will evolve for decades.

Lovely nose of dried roses, dark fruit, stems and spice. A forward celery/stem note on the palate. Excellent grip, but not as much depth or harmony as I would expect. Maybe this needs more time. Still quite enjoyable.

Exciting wine both for what it showed and the potential for the future. After four hours of air in a decanter the nose was singing - absolutely stunning, beguiling even, and one which you could enjoy for hours. On the palate there was a great solid core of darker fruit and nice acidity. Over another hour or so time it opened further to show depth and layers. A nice combination of power and balance. Either more time in the cellar or a longer decant would be recommended.

Birthday Dinner with Good Wine (NEXT Restaurant - Chicago IL): Decanted ~3 hours, could have used more time. Incredibly enticing aromatic start with intense red berry and powerful baking spice. Similar flavor profile but very subdued. Certainly my nose of the night, but just not as forthcoming on palate. Great potential here, just slightly awkward right now.

Way overrated. Not a bad wine but at these prices it should be fantastic. Seemed like a much older wine. More in its rusty color than in taste. It was smooth on the palate but nothing there to warrant the massive price.
An evening with Ib B (Frederiksberg): There is lovely coolness and minerality here, elegance is the focus, and the fruit is rather discreet, albeit present. It is still a young wine (basically unchanged on day 2 & 3) If this was a neuf it would be Rayas . (Provenance: IB)

As good as one can expect from the Domaine, still pretty primary but approachable. Trademark red floral nose with loads of VR spices, very deep. Medium plus palate with floral notes that mirrors the nose, ripe yet with pretty sharp acidity lift for a 02, very long finish.

This was an interesting wine and one of my favorites of the evening but would never guess that it was an '02. It appeared much more advanced and mature than I would expect. I think I may have had one of the last pours as my glass a bit cloudy. Significant browning. Lovely nose with beautiful floral and spice notes. Pure silk and sweetness on the palate with great flavors..lingering finish. I would have guessed the wine at least 10 years older
Scintillating nose of baking spice that just soars from the glass. Despite the bottle's youth, it was open for business and showing some maturity. Great silky texture.

Mostly Burgs at Heidi's: A stunner! The aromatics on the nose are just sublime. Sour cherry, assertive spice, black pepper, and more. Equally great on the palate. We had the 01 and 02 DRC GE's side by side. Both were very good. The nose on the 01 was great, and overall I liked it slightly better than the 02. Recent bottles of the 02 had a lot more spice and personality than this bottle. The table was split evenly between the two.

Pascal's dinner in SF 8/27/11 Properly sharp acidity at first with a slightly sweaty nose. With air a lovely clear medium bodied palate emerges. Quite fresh acidity. A slightly citric finish. Will it flesh out? Age may improve? I'm not too familiar with how these develop. The 2000 alongside is richer and more approachable now but this is cleaner and lighter.

Actually, this was my wine of the night.. Poured a glass and followed it throughout the dinner. Tons of spices, pine, meats, raspberries, strawberries, roses, and herbs. The nose was ever changing and blossoming throughout the night. Palate followed the nose and seemed to open up, soften, and take on balance as the night progressed as well. Tons of red fruit, baking spice, pine needles, venison, shrooms, that flows into a nice long finish. Obviously, this is quite young but given time to open up it really provided the kind of complexity and enjoyment you would expect. Cheers to Robertito for bringing this to our celebration!!

A fond going away dinner (HB Home Bistro, Chicago IL): nose: this was wound tight for a bit and even by the end of the night it didn't feel like it was soaring yet. Still, very deep and layered with amazing tones of dark red fruits, dark red cherries, all sorts of wild spices, earth tones, rhubarb, and all sorts of floral tones. Ridiculously complex to where you just need your nose in the glass to get everything
taste; ridiculously polished and silky medium feel with very noticeable medium/high acidity. Very suave, but still feels like it's holding back a good bit with layered and regal tones of dark red cherries, earth tones, all sorts of various spices, and loads of floral tones
overall: this showed well, but still has so much more to give. This was an absolute stunner as it showed off a level of class and poise that one doesn't come across too often. My first experience with DRC and I can easily see the greatness in it

Starts with lots of great spice and plenty of red and black fruit on the nose. That classic Vosne/Echezeaux character continues in the wine's flavors, with the excellent spice particularly noteworthy. Sensational concentration and length. Nose, taste, mid-palate and finish are completely harmonious. This was my WOTN in an evening full of great wine.

A fantastic wine. Exquisite precision, focus. So much potency in the aromatics and flavors profiles. A completely unique wine experience. Plump, meaty, spicy. A light sulfur smell that I totally fell for. Layer upon layer of strawberry, cotton candy, light white smoke, freshly cured meat and so much shroomy goodness. On the back end is a floral component that I think is unique to DRC wines. Delicious juice.

02 DRC GE and Eche drunk side by side. First time for me with the GE and it had a gorgeous and in fact awe inspiring nose. Deeper, funkier, and belied its age. Great stuff. The nose on the Eche was pure perfume. In the mouth the Eche was lighter and less sophisticated. Overall, the GE is a step function better. Both were fun, and no reason not to pop one early now and then if you've got a bunch.

Burgundy Dinner: Pre-Paulee with Zachys (Quince - San Francisco CA): Good red fruit on the nose but with far more spice, oddly a bit too much licorice (?). Red cherry and black cheery on palate with the same spice mix continuing, again a bit too much dominated by licorice. This is clearly a sensational wine and I'm curious to see how the spice will evolve with more time in bottle.

DRC Holiday Lunch - '99, '02, '05 (Scottsdale, AZ): Softer and more approachable than the '02 Echezeaux, this wine also had greater length and more complexity. However, I must say that the difference in quality between the Echezeaux and the Grands was not nearly as dramatic as the gap in their respective reputations and prices. It was a step up, but not a dramatic step up. This is a very fine wine that is much more accessible than the '99 GE at this stage, however, it's also going to be very long lived; in other words, there's no rush here but if you're going to open one now, definitely '02 rather than '99 at present.

Food: general western
Condition: perfect
Duration: 4.5 hours
Aroma: strawberries, red fruits, spices
Notes: had this with a 2004.

Nice nose, with fresh strawberry, floral and perfume, silky tannin. Balance is good (if not excellent) with good complexity.

Fantastic! deep ruby/ garnet with minimal sediment, this wine is mature.
Expressive complex fruit with a shadow of spice and a wonderful lingering finish.
Drink up if you enjoy Burgundy for the fruit

We had the 01 and 02 DRC GE's side by side. Both were very good. The nose on the 01 was great, and overall I liked it slightly better than the 02. Recent bottles of the 02 had a lot more spice and personality than this bottle. The table was split evenly between the two.

Properly sharp acidity at first with a slightly sweaty nose.

Tons of spices, pine, meats, raspberries,
strawberries, roses, and herbs. The nose was ever changing and blossoming throughout the night. Palate followed the nose and seemed
to open up, soften, and take on balance as the night progressed as well. Tons of red fruit, baking spice, pine needles, venison, shrooms,
that flows into a nice long finish. Obviously, this is quite young but given time to open up it really provided the kind of complexity and
enjoyment you would expect.
