This has improved considerably with age. Finally detecting the notes of diesel normally associated with this varietal along with some nice funk in addition to the melon and tropical fruit. Looking forward to cracking another in a year.
Dry riesling @ Groppi's; 10/15/2010-10/26/2010 (Groppi's): nose is showing quite glacial. a green grassy element emerges. this is much more talkative out the gate than the last time. fennel bulb. palate is dry and rather exacting. glassy texture on the palate with some edgy minerals/acids on the finish. soft potpourri style florals on the palate. DAY3, pear and waxy grape on the nose. palate shows the sandalwood/nag champa expression of the ludwig hillside 2007. green olive on the finish. !!!!!!! I love this wine.
Bracingly acidic out of the bottle. Improved after being in the fridge under vacuum seal for several days, so I'm hopeful for the next few years. Charlie Smith was correct: "The Chardonnay is for drinking and the Riesling is for cellaring".
•The Stuff: 100% estate fruit Riesling; 420 cases produced. The wine clocks in at .70% residual sugar (on the dry side) and 12.7%abv
•The Swirl: Light pale yellow in color (darker than the Kung Fu Girl) with a clean crisp look
•The Sniff: Very tight on the nose with hints of white flowers, guava or papaya fruit and slight wet stone.
•The Sip: Well made wine that has an even flavor from front to back. While the flavor profile is not the most diverse, the flavors of papaya and lemon are very well done. A perfectly balanced acidity and good crisp finish round out the classic taste.
•The Score: At $26 retail, I score this wine a 3+ out of 5. If you can find this wine under $20 it’s an easy score of 4.
Showing light texture on the nose. Seeming easy RS, but really..? Faint diesel. This is opening up. Apricot fruit on the palate, but tonnes of room to open up. DAY 2. really coming around. pear fruit and a knife's edge. tea notes more apparent today. light textural waxy still shows on the nose. DAY 3!! that's when this finally gets going. lush pear and quince fruit. white pepper and a knife's edge. apricot!!!! white pepper on the finish. let this one open up before drinking now.
open 2 days. sweet peaches and nice minerality on the nose. palate does display that orange vitamin sort of thing going on. sweet lime (kalamansi lime) in the nose too. i will collect this wine at that price of $25.99. buy.
New vintage!Very strong mineral note on the nose, slightl flowers, a touch of perfume. But just opened. Hardly sweet at all, maybe just a touch of crab apple to the thing. Lengthy finish. I wonder how the bottle will open up. I would guess a little bit shocky but bill says it has been sitting for a couple of weeks already. Tight.
