Ruby-garnet color. I let this bottle breathe several hours and a constellation of different aromas developed compared to a prior pop-n-pour bottle. We consumed it with paella constructed with Iberico chorizo and shrimp head bouillon- a fabulous combo.

Perhaps slightly less opulent than last January's bottle but showing more tangy backbone. It was an excellent pairing for a stew of wild boar in a mushroom, red currant and kriek beer sauce. Very good.

Dark & Shut down, rather simple and uninspiring, no apparent flaws but just a meh bottle. Did not improve on day 2 only got worse. A true disappointment considering how great the 98 Chaupin was tonight as well as all the other bottles so my score is probably a bit harsh. Got a bit more open after 3 days but still rather simple for a VV

A rich opulent CndP full of mature dark berry fruit but enlivened in a seamless way by discreet balsamic touches, a sprinkling of spice, decent acidity and a quite long and firm finish. At its peak, I guess. Very good.

Decanted and served. At 18, still big and palate-filling, drizzling the juice of roasted meat down the sides of the tongue. There was some mint on the finish at first that dissipated with air. I don't see Dunnuck's 97 but I like this wine.

Better than Chaupin, but this bottle was certainly ready; colour is brownish, alcohol is here, it is sweet, borderline pruny. Heavy stuff, still. Drink up fast, judging from this bottle. #neufnight #fromNC

The past couple of months I have had several 2000 CNP's from high quality producers that were surprisingly faded. This was another. The color was a bit dull and cloudy. The nose had some floral notes but lacked any earthiness. On the palate it was rather thin and stern. The fruit had faded quite a bit, but the wine lacked the pleasant complexity that can compensate for the loss of fruit in a mature wine. Maybe I'm just having a bad run of luck, as I would expect a wine like this to still be in a good place.

Gorgeous aromatics of cherry and a hint of licorice, unfortunately not paired well, so the food overpower the wine. I sensed the fruit was in decline, but still enough to enjoy w food of moderate intensity.

Opened by Mark. A blend of about two thirds Grenache with the rest Mourvèdre, Syrah and other. About 40% of the vines were planted in 1920. Decanted for 2 hours. Smooth and elegant CdP. Notes of garrigue, underbrush and red fruit. Medium bodied and integrated tannins. I liked this better than the regular 2000 Janasse CdP or the 2000 Chaupin which I previously had. 92-93 points.

popped & poured then, tasted over two days - keeps well. The very nice fruitiness lingers on, along with spices and a good local feel, this wine seems to be coming around slowly. Still power here, but good balance and still one of the best 2000's I have had.

I was really looking forward to trying this, but the wine was just too tight and by far the spiciest CDP I've ever had that just completely detracted from the wine. I'm guessing the wine was simply just too young and needs more time. Will come back again in 5 years.

Decanted for one hour. Dark purple hue. Deeply-pitched nose of intense garrigue and olive notes covered in stony earth elements. Dense and somewhat imploded on the palate with layers of earth, charcoal, monolithic black plum fruit, blackberry, currant, and garrigue in abundance. Not much acidity and only moderately firm tannins. Hot, somewhat short finish of black fruit and earth. Could be a suspect bottle, but did not reveal much joy tonight.

The nose is more tempered than I expected. The palate is a touch sweet and ripe. The wine has integrated overall and is not as overtly oaky as in the past. Still, not my style of CdP. Christie's Rhone dinner, Amali.

Decanted ~ 20 min. Deliciously complex nose from the outset, cured beef, violet, sweet tobacco, and somewhat later.... beautifully rich raspberry. Substantial minerality and structure on the palate, appropriate acid, and not overabundant fruit. Truly fabulous now, and maybe a few years more.

This is flat-out impressive, a real elixir. Faded ruby, rust at the rim, and copious legs. Nose is powerful, with oodles of garrigue, sweet briary fruit and grilled nuts. Even a hint of Madeira. Very smooth, very full-bodied in the mouth, tons of fruit. Less impressive than the nose, but only just by a little. Penetrates to every corner of both nose and mouth. If it has a flaw it is the fact that the high alcohol is noticeable, and not completely integrated into the fruit. It should be interesting to see how this tastes tomorrow, inasmuch as it was basically popped and poured tonight. For now, 4-13-16-8: 91/100. After one day, the alcohol "flaw" is nowhere in evidence and this is pure decadence as a result. So 24 hours later: 4-13-17-9: 93/100.

Very rich full bodied, loads of dark, primary fruit - but there are still lots of locale and garrigue and some hints of elegance here - could be become quite burgundian (!) of left for another 5 years. But very nice to drink now and one of the few top wines to come out of this vintage. (with AD at Racines, New York)

Needed some air - about 30 min. Sweet Grenache fruit (although on the decline for fruit)... just enough, yielding to wonderful secondaries and minerality. Not sure how long this will hold for, I'd recommend drinking 1-2 yrs.

Agree w "Beatles" 100%. Came out edgy and closed, opened up and was fine, but never developed the complexity, layers and wonder-fullness I look forward to in a well stored, 14 yo CPD from a good yr/reliable house. Very good, not transcendant.

Needs air. Badly. The attack is a bit harsh, softens up in the glass. Tasted vis-a-vis the 1999, this does (not surprisingly) come out on the stronger, richer side. Not burnt at all and none of the vintages some excessive alcohol, but still somewhat of a heavy hitter in comparison. Olives, garrigue and rich grenache-fruit dominates, and while this is a lovely and typical wine indeed, this lacks the creaminess and pure provencial joy of the Pegau as well as the lightness and elegance of it's 1999 sibling. Will keep, but I don't see it really going anywhere

Started out funky, but with 2 hours of air turned into a fantastic wine! Still a hint of barnyard on the nose, but lots of ripe raspberry fruit, fig, garrigue, white chocolate & herbs. Rich, maybe a bit too sweet, full but not heavy on the palate, with layers of the same traits as the nose, and a wonderful grenache dominating finish. Great CdP character and no heat whatsoever. Delicious wine!

Popped and poured. Extremely reticent nose. Tight as a drum for 2 hours on the palate. Some charcoal, garrigue, pepper, and strawberry sweetness eventually on the palate. I think it was a good bottle, just not ready or not given enough time to show itself in the glass.

I know Janasse is "supposed" to be huge and in your face but this was very pleasant to sip and smell. Nicely balanced, and while not shy, very sipable with food. Killed with lamb balls drenched in cherry-Pinot chutney. Dark red fruit, tobacco, fig jam, olive, dried flowers, green herbs, pepper, and mild vanilla. Long finish.

Flock CdP Tasting - 2003 & Older (Jordan's): Dark ruby. Nose is big with loads of rich sweet fruit, herbal aromas emerge with time in the glass. Oh yeah ... this is drinking great on the palate -- pure fruit, garrigue, herbs, spice. Palate has great length and goes on and on. My 5/9, Group 4/9. I under-scored this one in the line up.

Third time's a charm. My only other 2 bottles of this were both badly corked. Fading ruby color. Essence of lavender perfume at first with rising notes of pine needle. Medium weight. Some ripe red fruit given complexity by bark and tobacco tones and sustaining acidity. This had much more in the way of savory flavors and elegance than I usually associate with the Grenache-driven style of this house and was truly an excellent bottle. At least one out of three bottles proved its mettle.

This is impressive, much more power than the 2001 Aieul that we had the night before. This has easily 10 more years to go. That's why we decided to only drink half of it and re taste the next day. Very nice texture in the nose, it's like you would have drenched an expensive linen shirt into cherry and strawberry juice and then dried it in the sun next to a Thai spice market. Very good! Decant for 3 hours (only if the bottle was well stored though)!

We opened the 2000 last night (my son's 11th bday)- we had a couple of glasses but this wine tight and not giving much. Tonight we had the rest. Wow! The wine put on real weight, full bodied, lots of spice, tarragon and licorice with wonderful plum and other dark fruit with a touch of chocolate. This wine is a big baby. It needs a lot of air and/or decanting. Do not pop and pour this guy. Yummy!98 points but only on day 2!

TN: Huet, SQN, Spotteswood, ZH, Ussegglio, HL, Cos, Borgogno and lots more: Inky purple. This has lots of oak and not much fruit left. Black raspberries. Tannic. Faded fruit. It is harsh with dark cherries. Perhaps it just was disappointing to me as it was a fine wine. Just not what I would have expected. Too much oak left and not enough fruit.

Between this and the 2000 Janasse Chaupin alongside it on the table, I give the nod to this VV. While the nose is more closed initially, the palate delivers a precise beam of blue/black fruit and violets, almost as if this is more cool-climate Syrah than Grenache. The tannins are firmer here than in the Chaupin, suggesting that there is still more room for development, whereas the Chaupin has finally gotten to a smooth point. With air, meaty notes emerge on the nose. Enjoyable.

A winner. This bottle showed so well after being opened for 45 minutes. Almost black in color. Nose of roasted meat, leather, crushed violets, black fruit. Nice spice made a great mouthfeel along with the rounded tannins, fruit, and nice acid balance. This is the best bottle from this lot I've had, and I wish I had lots more. Very good.

Tasting Group Dinner - Chateauneuf at Heidi's (Heidi's & Our House, Minneapolis): I poured this blind for the group. Two tasters guessed New World Syrah; one guessed '03 Beaucastel. Indeed, this is a really ripe, sweet, modern-tasting CDP with gobs of black fruit, soy, and black truffle flavors, a suave texture, and a long finish. Pretty well evolved. Some VA on the nose, and some heat on the finish, yet somehow this stays reasonably well balanced in the glass.

Opaque in color, with a nose of blackberry and kirsch liqueurs, sage, almost a dark stony fruit and chocolate on the nose a swell. Low acid and voluptuous, with good minerality, pepper, and with some rhubarb and herbs in the distant background. This was really on the black side of Grenache, with a fleshy texture and long finish. I am usually not a huge lover of this particular bottling, but this was a very fine blle of wine. Thanks TM.

Decanted for 4 hours and served blind. Hmm, this is not a bad bottle of wine. I often find Janasse's wines too extracted, too sweet, too much - but this is actually a pretty decent bottle. There is tons of kirsch liquor and a somwhat jammy sweetness to this wine, but its not in a bad way. Rich on alcohol for sure, I find it a tiny bit heady. Very forward, lush wine. I wonder if the Vieilles Vignes is less extracted than the Chaupin. Good, positive surprise. Dinner at home with Niels Lillelund, Jim and Ea.

This bottle had a very fragrant nose of cassis, graphite, and sweet berries. Medium bodied: opened and aired over the course of a two hour dinner. Tight at first, but after about 45 minutes it exhibited a great deal of meat and earth. It later evolved into a nicer stage with floral notes and blackberry and blueberry. After two hours it seemed to take on some port flavors with a bit more sweetness. Wonderfully complex wine.

Big, fruity, dark wine that was quite good and well balanced. Very primary still, but complex, with kirsch, blueberries, earth, and some plummy notes. This will evolve for a while and should improve substantially. Didn't have the charm or aromatic fireworks I look for in a wine at this level, but was a lovely drink and paired perfectly with lamb.

This was gorgeous, both alone and with flame scorched spicy chicken. Double decanted an hour beforehand. Red berries, cocoa, and velvet; sea water. Bricking nicely. Meat and earth/ wonderful balance. There's that special magic where the weight feels like much less than the substantial body would suggest--to such an extent that, once it opened up, the 2000 Chaupin was actually refreshing.

Opened two bottles w/ homemade beef pot roast. Popped and poured. Dark purple/ruby color. An evolved, low-acid, and tasty modern-styled CDP that could pass for a 1990 in a blind tasting. Soft, plummy, ripe, mid-weight dark fruit, with surprisingly complex earthy/leafy flavors on the mid-palate. Well-balanced, with no heat. This isn't massive or extracted, nor is it especially grippy or structured, and the fruit and secondary flavors are quite delicious.

2000 Janasse VV and Pegau: Very dark ruby red, this made for a very interesting contrast with the 2000 Pegau. The Janasse VV style was clearly evident here, with a core of sweet viscous dark cherry balanced by very fine grained tannins and a backbone of acidity. This is similar in style to the 2001 Janasse VV, but well on its way to maturity, since the flavors are no longer completely primary. On the nose, the dark kirsch aromas are swept by a woodier element, perhaps some oak that is well integrated, but conveying now something much more like underbrush. The nose was more expressive than the 2000 Pegau, and the kirsch/dark cherry flavors currently more intense, this wine is aging very well. Demonstrates to me how well the Janasse VV can age...

Tasted alongside 2001 Mon Aieul. As much as I enjoyed the Usseglio, I found myself reaching for the Janasse as the wine began to develop. It was not decanted and showed more restraint at first. This wine underwent serious evolution in the glass. It's nose expanded, developing toffee, mocha, pound cake and cassis flavors that were utterly seductive. The palate was not as powerful as the Usseglio, but it had a finish to die for that was persistent and refined. I would date this wine if I could.

Tasting Group Dinner w/ Jeb Dunnuck (Heartland, St. Paul): Opened 6 hours before pouring. Very dark purple color. Gingerbread and molasses on the nose. The palate explodes with sweet, super-ripe, concentrated BIG dark fruit. Very modern styled, showing a fair amount of oak, low acid, and not much tannin. Lushly textured. With some air, this settled down and some of the overt sugary flavors began to integrate. I have several of these in the cellar, and I can't wait to see how this wine evolves over the next several years.

The Janasse, which Lou had opened a couple of hours earlier, was showing a fragrant nose of lavender and mint right out of the gate, although these notes somewhat mysteriously blew off with time, giving way to a more familiar (but powerful) draught of kirsch and raspberries. Extremely smooth and well integrated, this silky wine shows the easy likability of the best 2000 CdP—a great mouthfeel, with none of the slightly harder tannins of the 2001 Janasse VV, this should continue to improve as it sheds its primary characteristics, but is drinking great now.

2000 Chateauneuf-du-Pape: This bottle was double decanted five hours before serving. Fresh, pure, dark cherry fruit, with a bit of a metallic note and a hint of meatiness at its core. Concentrated, round and ripe. Seems less juicy / syrupy / primary than a bottle last year (see TN) - though the decanting process this time around could explain some of that. Very nice wine.

On the nose only it is unmistakably the style of Janasse VV from recent vintages. This one showed particulatly well although I do not think it will reach the level of the amazing 2001 - however it was still particularly impressive, very concentrated with a deep, superb nose and the right structure to age well. I find that many 2000 CdPs have a slightly unbalanced level of alcohol, especially on the finish - but none of this here, it was great from start to finish.

Flanken and Châteauneuf-du-Pape!!! (Seattle, WA): Wowza, this is one seriously big and briary wine, huge and crazy, SCREAMING Grenache at the top of its lungs. Lots of bramble and briar come along for the ride along with a fair bit of new oak, but it is easily overwhelmed by the gobs of black fruit. Some licorice elements as well. Wow, this is just a crazy, nearly over the top, head-shaking wine. After about four hours of air this settle down a little, but it is still big, hot and pretty crazy. Interestingly enough, alongside the 2003 Clos des Papes, this was much darker in color but also much less intense in flavor.

Incredibly, I handed a glass of this to my wife tonight and asked her what she thought it was... Her "wild" guess: 2000 Janasse Chateauneuf? Amazing. This is the first 2000 V.V. I have opened since just after release. Having recently seen several positive notes, I figured I'd check up on it... This is fantastic juice. It's still in a very fruit-driven mode - bright, pure red / black (cherry / raspberry) fruit, with just a whiff of underlying licorice and spice peeking out. No obvious new oak. Hits the palate hard, coating it with huge red / black fruit, and more prominant tannin, acid (and alcohol) than I recall upon release, when it was absolutely overflowing with seemingly softer black cherry / raspberry fruit. I loved it upon release, and now I'm even more convinced that this has the stuffing and balance to age well. The 2001 V.V., in comparison (see TN), is even more massively proportioned, with fruit leaning more towards the black end of the spectrum, in contrast to the 2000's slightly red tilt. The 2001 will almost certainly outlive the 2000 - by a number of years, I would think. I love what these guys are doing - from top to bottom.

Decanted for 2 hrs, nose revealed cherry jam and peppercorn. The palate was exquisite, complex waves of ripe cherries, hickory smoked meat, lavender, all supported by a large backbone of sweet tannin and perfect acid. Finish went the distance, and this showed zero barn (which I cannot stand fwiw). An excellent wine.

This wine was unyielding when first opened. Very tannic. 3 hours in decanter and then 24 hours with a cork in the bottle.... Blueberries in a little alcohol on the nose. Like a blueberry liquor. Palate is balanced and HUGE!!!! Tons of material. Tannins and dark cherry fruit are balanced. The finish is mindblowing with some earth elements coming forward showing what will be. This is another perfect wine in a few years. Wow it is good now.

Needs air.

Killed with lamb balls drenched in cherry-Pinot chutney. Dark red fruit, tobacco, fig jam, olive, dried flowers, green herbs, pepper, and mild vanilla. Long finish.

Enjoyable.
