  • PnP with 15 minutes in the glass. Pleasant nose of cherry, raspberry, vanilla, and fall spice. Enjoyably dry with similar notes on the palate, along with an earthiness, noticeable tannins and medium finish.

  • Perfect cork, decanted for sediment, which there was quite a bit of. Color showed mature, brick, almost tawny color. Aromatic nose with some dried cherry, floral, spice. On the palate more dried cherry, florals, pretty grippy tannins and good acidity. Only quibble was that the alcohol was peeking out a bit, but wasn't much of a detractor. Solid, and happy with this for the price paid 10 years ago.

  • No formal notes. This is quite mature now, just a little bit of dried-cherry fruit remaining to go along with lots of leather and old books and dried flowers. Very dry on the palate with a bit of bitterness, and modest, fine tannin. Very enjoyable.

  • Best on the third day. Truthfully I didn’t finish the last glass and left it in the countertop. At 6am I took a sip and, well, at its best now. Very pretty wine. Great fruit. I’m thinking it might be better in a few years.

  • Giving this another spin, for science and interesting discussions it created (WB). Back to back after an odd night with this seemingly odd vintage, last night’s note gives this one context for those following along. Had a stacked day so I popped early and let the bottle decant for about 7 hours. Perhaps unorthodox vs last night but it worked out. Again swirls lighter in the glass with a fairly dark ruby, some bricking, even a slight orange at the brim. The nose is not as subtle or “refined” as the last bottle; it’s got a great presence. Aromas of dried cherries, licorice and anise notes, less earthy, add a hint of orange as it fades. Almost a different bottle if I put these side by side. The palate on this, there’s nothing muted or hollow, it’s well integrated and connects end-to-end, fires on all cylinders. Starts with dried cherries, licorice, some forest floor, tannins are lovely, gripping from the start and complementary all the way through. Light clove even later in. Mid-palate feels less acidic than the other bottle due to the fruit being a magnitude more engaged; still medium acidity highlighted with a touch of lemon rind and more balanced. Fruit, very present in the finish this time, fading out to black tea and cherries. It’s not the proverbial RP 90 seconds, however it gives you what you need and it leaves you wanting the next sip. Two days, two different experiences. This is what I got a glimpse of last night, then this one delivered. Still gives me pause on what to do with the others. This one could evolved into something super interesting in 5 or even more. That said, given the definite vintage variability I’m going to drink sooner than later regardless to enjoy the sure thing. One more thing to add, much more sediment, like a level 2 up, if that matters.

  • Interestingly, the notes on this are all over the map. Me, had a decent experience. Some light bottle prep filtering out the sediment, which wasn't much, then a 2 hour decant. Swirls light in the glass with a fairly dark ruby and some bricking at the edge. Nose is dried cherries, red fruit, earthy-goodness, light menthol, light mint/vanilla, some herbs. Somewhat refined. The palate leads with red fruits, cherry featuring, intertwined with velvety tannins up front, earthy mushrooms heading towards the middle. The fruit can mute out a bit in the middle leaving very subtle minty/vanilla and oak notes. Acidity's medium crossing the middle, fruit fades in and out a bit, black tea filling some voids heading towards the finish which is definitely on the short side. Not a cliff however does fade fast and hollow. Overall its enjoyable for the nose and the front. Letting this lay down further is kind of a science project. Maybe something unexpected happens in another 5 - 10. That said, I'm in the camp that this will not evolve much further with the fruit and structure being so delicate and the hollow elements in the wrong places. It still has a punch now, 5 years it could just be a light forgettable jab left. To me, drink up.

  • This bottle is showing notably more aged than the one just a year ago. Considerable sediment here too; wish I'd've stood it up beforehand. Perfect cork. Bricking garnet color with transparency. Smells a little stewed with dried dark and red fruits, black tea, black pepper, dried spice drawer, leather, maple syrup, and a subtle touch of floral. Medium body, acid, and finish, with flavors of black cherry, plum, maple syrup, and spice. Probably drink my last bottle sooner than later.

  • One of the few times where I prefer the S.Caterina bottling to this, as I just had the '04 & '05 S.Caterina.

This is good, but seems to betray the heat of '05 a little more than the other wine, with a subtle prune/overripe fruit note on the nose. Better on the palate, but tonight, my least favorite of the three.

  • 1st of 3, perfect cork, didn't stand this up or decant, just popped and poured. Transparent brickish garnet color. Aromas of dark and dark red fruits, cherry, earth, tar, black tea, cedar, graphite, mushroom, lemon, orange peel, anise, and dried spice drawer. Killer nose is showing something different with each sniff. Medium body, acid, and finish, with a light grip to the tannins, but really just enough to give it some structure, and flavors of cherry and other high toned red fruits, lemon, orange peel, black tea, anise, and dried spices. Nice age and complexity here. Rustic, old school Italian/nebbiolo in this one, and I'm a fan. Stoked to have 2 more. 92-93

  • PnP. Red cherry and raspberry, fall spices and black tea. Distinct, but soft, tannins and medium finish. Continued to improve as the night went on.

  • Judging by the state of the bottom 1/4 inch of the cork and the higher than usual acidity this bottle suffered some heat damage at some point. It smelled cooked and looked browner than it should - took about 2 hours for it to be enjoyable and balanced. Classic style and great with food.

  • No standing-up of my bottle, no decant. The cork came out as clean as any I've encountered. The nose is light to medium intensity of plums, sour cherry and touch of strawberry -- pretty but light. Where this initial bouquet is emaciated, the palate is full of vigor with wild strawberry fruit, sour cherry, and plenty of bright acidity. This is all medium weight and leads to a smooth, delicious finish. Ultra-fine grape-skin tannins paint and constrain the fore-palate. This is perfect for food. Kermit Lynch imports Guido's wines, and I tend to enjoy most everything KL offers. This is no exception. It does appear at all tired or fading to my palate, just an extremely fresh, juicy, even crunchy bottle of nebbiolo.

  • Stood up 3 months and decanted off its sediment cleanly. Light ruby with age-appropriate bricking; nose is aromatic but heady, like spiced licorice liquor, spiced pears; palate is light-medium bodied, heat actually doesn't show as much here as on the nose, fruit is faded though and leaving behind only a bit of alcohol in the midpalate; finish is short and clipped. Honestly based on this, a huge disappointment. Not over the hill, just heady, lacking fruit, simple, and short length. Maybe air will give this a magical transformation. 75
2 hours air: A bit of the headiness on the nose has improved, but otherwise largely the same, and if anything the tannins have become more prominent. Just not a great balance of fruit/tannins/savory.
Day 2: the alcohol really inhibits the enjoyment here. I rarely throw away wine that I have bought that isn’t flawed, but that may be the case here. It’s not worth the calories.

  • Talk about bottle variation, the previous bottle was nearly over the hill, so I marked this one for getting out of the cellar soon. Leftover pasta for dinner, nothing really reaching out to match, so just wanted a glass and maybe there was enough life in this to work or I would just do a backup bottle. Passion fruit and floral aromas, velvet tannins, nice linger, really, really lovely. This bottle bought and cellared at the same time as the previous is wonderful. The mystery of wine.

  • Past its prime by at least 5 years but still a decent wine. Tawny and somewhat maderized, it is still a drinkable wine that does have some of the notes of a classic aged Barolo but the overaging notes are stronger. It will make great vinegar, so after a second glass the balance goes to the family vinegar barrel, I will open another wine tonight.

  • Went well with the pot roast but still pretty rough around the edges. Lots of tannin. I think another 5 years before the next bottle.

  • Light translucent ruby in the glass, with ripe cherry fruit on the nose.

Sweet and sour red and black fruits on the palate, with good supporting acidity. Pretty nice drinking, but still has some time for possible favorable development.

  • Coravined for about 2 months, still good. Softer than most Barolos I have had recently but the vintage is an early drinking one. Sweet cherries and slight hints of rose and tar. Drinking well now, no need to even decant.

  • My half-dozen varied, but at its best, after at least an hour's breathing in the decanter, this wine is lovely, of feminine delicacy and refinement, with its cherry tinged nose and palate. It is never less than good, and CTers are right that it should be drunk fairly soon.

  • As my friend said, "this will suck any moisture right out of your mouth!" This was incredibly dry. Food needed! There is some fruit and cherry but mostly it's earth and perfume.

  • In its late stages. There are still cherries but they are far in the background. Mostly tannic earthy/herbal notes though all pleasant. The structural elements are all still strong yet fully integrated. Aged, drinking quite well now though I would recommend opening any remaining bottles by its 15th birthday.

  • Strikingly light rose water color. Light perfume. Glassy entry. Fairly straightforward flavors of dried cherry, potpourri and spice. This was fairly savory, didn't need food and was approachable. Medium finish. Clean. I liked this quite a bit. 90

  • Odd. I'm not sure if this was flawed or not, though given how none of the preceding notes mentioned oddity, I'll assume something was off. This had typical Barolo notes done reasonably well, but also had a spiky spiciness to it that one person at the table thought was VA (but the rest, including myself, not). Not bad even with the weirdness, but the experience left me a bit nonplussed.

  • Decanted an hour then served with a mushroom risotto. Wonderful nose of roses, dried cherries, violets, and cedar. On the palate cherry, cranberry, dusty cedar but no flowers. Tannins are pleasant but integrating nicely. Very enjoyable especially at this pricepoint.

  • The wine was not singing tonight. Drank with fresh raviolis. It took a while to open up but still the alcohol predominated. Lots of sediment; probably would help to decanter; OK fruit but not completely balanced; I think that the wine is at its end; I would drink up!

  • This wine has finally opened and all that I look for in a Barolo has come to the fore. It'll be great for years but it is in the zone now. Smooth, integrated and lots of red fruit.

  • Powerful Barolo. Open nose of cigar box (cedar in particular), plums and asian spice. More plummy fruit on the attack with high acidity and big tannins. Not the most perfumed Nebbiolo on the finish, yet plenty of interest nonetheless in terms of fruit and spice. I do like where this is at right now as it's not punishing to drink, yet is open and has plenty of fruit. The structure, however, is unsurprisingly substantial and I've opened my bottles early in their window.

  • Absolutely beautiful. Served at dinner at my club with no decant and it evolved quickly with violets pouring out of the glass and tar underlying a traditional Barolo. In the zone right now and I'll enjoy the rest over the next couple of years.

  • Very informal notes, but tons of leather, earth, spice and some dark fruit. Just enough tannins to firm up the palate. Medium length finish. This seemed much better than my last tasting note 2 years ago. 91+

  • Excellent wine. Great bouquet; nice color, balanced with good complexity, fruit and acid work well, alcohol does not overwhelm; drank with a steak; Not sure how much more time it has.

  • Color: Bright cherry red, hinting at orange at the rim.

Nose: Very pretty and charming. Beautiful floral scents of fresh roses and potpourri, as well as sweet spice notes of cinnamon and nutmeg. The fruit is a bit in the background, but it's there, with juicy aromas of cherry and sweet raspberry. With air, it begins to show some secondary characteristics, giving more earthy, savory notes of incense and smoked sausage.

    Mouthfeel: Light-medium bodied and textured.

Palate: Beautiful. Still showing a bit of youthful tightness, but it has a great dusty, firm structure, which the fresh, juicy red cherry fruit pierces right through, and there's real energy and sense of progression. The floral and spice flavors emerge as you return to the glass, and the finish is squeaky clean and much more fruity that you expect. Quite refreshing, actually. The tannins melt away as you swallow, leaving behind raspberry, cranberry, and rose petals.

I love wine like this. Fresh and juicy but with lots of character and backbone, easy to drink, great with food, elegant, classy, and fun. I enjoyed my last bottle a little over a year ago, but it has definitely improved since then. As much as I liked this bottle, I almost regret opening it because I know this is going to get even better. And it shouldn't be long now; the tannins are already melting. One bottle left, and I'm going to try to save it for at least two more years.

  • The nose is consistent with Barolo, but this taste like a basic Nebbiolo, with medium body, tannin and a short finish.

  • The nose is layered with floral scents, both fresh & dried. The palate is fairly muscular, with red/black cherries, anise, earth/tar, all building from the initial attack to the midpalate to the finish. Firm tannins and medium acid. This was fairly closed on day one but blossomed on day two; the 14.5 alcohol doesn't come through at all. Wonderful for the price and drinking well already but I look forward to seeing how it evolves with age.

  • PnP, served with dinner then finished over the next 3 hours. Light floral nose with roses and violets over some sandalwood. Fairly nice acids up front with bing cherry, some tartness and then the tannins kick in as one would expect. Noticed a bit of heat in transition from mid-to-finish at about hour 2. Didn't see it at first and toward the end of the night it had dissipated.

1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comment

  • decanted about 30 mins. Early on this seemed out of balance, and had some heat, both on the nose and palate, but but eh 2nd hour, it was coming together nicely, less heat, better aromatics adding some floral notes. While approacahble with enough air, this seems to have som upside with more time in bottle.

Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comment

  • Decanted an hour then consumed over the next 2+. Light dusty nose and sandalwood with a bit of floral underneath. Nice acids up front before the telltale tannins really take hold. Cherry, cranberry and some earthiness on the flavor profile. This would go well with game or a meaty pasta. Pretty darn nice at this pricepoint.

  • Color: Nebbiolo brick, and throwing some sediment.

Nose: Lovely. Fragrant roses, leather, licorice, and juicy red fruit (sour cherry, raspberry, and cranberry). There's a nice faint whiff of mineral and fresh earth, and a bit of cinnamon from the oak. Really quite approachable and delicate, and if I nosed this blind (and ignored the color), I might think it was pinot. With some air, some tarriness appears that helps identify it as nebbiolo.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and juicy, but with a firm backbone.

Palate: Wonderfully pure ripe red fruit, with floral and spice notes underneath. There is good acidity to balance the sweet fruit, and it finishes long, persistently sappy, and dry, with firm leathery tannins. Great balance, with no sign of the 14.5% ABV. I wish the mineral/earth notes came through a bit on the palate to add some complexity, but it's very nice and very elegant nonetheless.

This is quite approachable despite its youth, but the structure assures that patience will continue to be rewarded.

  • Color: Ruby. Nose: Red cherry, earth, leather and some light spice. Palate: Tannins, forest floor, red cherry. Medium body. Finish: Short-medium in length with more tannins, earth and cherry-cranberry. I have no Barolo experience, but this did not impress me. Not a re-buy.

  • Great medium red, clear, hint of garnet. The nose was lively immediately on opening, cherries, a mineral oil, and flowers. The palate was a bit sweet, with a great power. As it opened more, some earthy stuff was evident. Small hint of excess alcohol. Tannins were pretty fine for a youngish barolo. Great, large wine.

  • Nice, and entirely approachable despite its youth, at least after 4 hours of decantation. Roses, floral, more tea than tar. Less tannic than I expected; very refined and fine-grained. Sufficiently ripe and accessible to be universally appreciated by wine-novice colleagues too, and a little austerity on the finish helped it stand out for everyone as a bit more serious and special than a quite good spicy-not-overly-fruity CA pinot we had along with it.

  • Killer bottle. Old school with red fruits and tar and dusty, powerful tannins. Lots of depth and purity and very good. Less polished than the others but more pure, ala comparing G Rinaldi to Giacosa, perhaps. Amazing value.

  • Bouquet of tar, plums, prunes and anise. Some heat, but very aromatic overall. Actually similar nose to some CA Nebbiolos I've had. Lush and approachable flavors with dark plummy fruit, spice and earth. Finishes tannic. Medium acidity, medium-full body. Surprisingly approachable, but with nice structure (superior to its CA peers). Veering a bit to riper, dried fruit though this undoubtedly aids in its youthful pleasure. Check in on 2nd bottle in a few years.

  • I was treated to lovely floral aromas, as well as tar and dark fruit. The palate was very floral with strawberries and cocoa, and tannins that started out soft but firmed up leading to a satisfying finish. While it is young, it has enough complexity to make it interesting. I like this wine.... a lot.

  • Apperence: clear, ruby to garnet but just slight if that. Not much briking, just a hint of garnet at the edge. Nose: not faulty condition, pronouced intensity (and this is from a bottle that has been open for three days), seems fairly full developed but not in an aged out way but rather in an exposed to oxygen way. Sweet and pungent aromas of anise, rose, violet, some sort of citrus, maybe kiwi (what a stretch though). Palate: Acidity is medium + but it doesn't neccessairly show through the raging tannins which I would put at high. The alchohol feels light but that sensation is probably blocked by the tannins. The body is medium - with a medium + flavor characteristic. Lengthy finish. Showing how long its been open though. Conclusions: very good quality, and high priced at $54 but a bargin for a Barolo of this quality quite frankly. Needs time to full come around.

  • I am seemingly liking my Barolos right off the cork pull these days. I wonder what is happening to my palate? Fairly etched and precise for such a Barolo at such a price point. Frankly for being only $45 this is a hell of a little thing. If you like traditionally style Barolo that is.
