El tapón estaba totalmente impregnado a pesar de lo cual conseguí sacarlo entero. No se decantó, sólo abierto y extraída una pequeña parte una hora antes del consumo, con lo cual se oxigenó correctamente. Color muy atejado y de capa media. Aroma intenso y vivo y además muy variado dada la edad del vino: tierra, trufa, hojarasca, fruta negra en mermelada y flores secas. En boca se muestra como lo que es, un auténtico Rioja clásico, acidez sorprendente para la edad, suavidad extrema, taninos redondos y limpios, llena la boca, mucho sabor, final largo en el que sobresale la flor seca y la tierra.
Vino extremadamente elegante que a mi parecer se encuentra en un excelente momento del consumo y al que se le pueden dar tranquilamente 10 o 15 años más. Un placer encontrarse con cosas así de vez en cuando

Spain (Home): Reddish-brown. Nose with tea, slim fruit, and some spices. Nice structure, and decent concentration. Indeterminate taste, but some sour-sweet fruit. Over the top.

Liquor nose typical of the hot 1982, with Amarena cherry notes, big and powerful but more elegant after 5 min in the glass. The palate full, black cherry and red, good substance, powerful and big, with good acidity that will keep it alive for 2 more decades probably. Still room for it to improve in 5-10 years, a truly great Rioja, drink now-2035 or more, 93-94 points.

No muy brillante con tímidos reflejos cobrizos y un rastro de turbidez. Hay una buena cantidad de precipitados, en forma de escamas, en la base de la botella. Borde amplio, atejado, marcado respecto al menisco.
Poderoso, hinchado, presentándose con un gran despliegue inicial y sin necesidad de tomar aire para venirse arriba. Hay un primer registro que lo vertebra a maderas finas y ebanistería, tung, barniz, acompañado de tostados, ahumados, balsámicos, y unas curiosas notas apimentonadas de fondo, muy próximas a la cabernet, que traen a la memoria esos viejos vinos de "urgencia" de postguerra elaborados por Cvne en los primeros años de los 40. Complejo, profundo, resultón, evolucionando gracias a apuntes de caza, faisandaje, ferruginosos (sangre) y un tostado marcado fundido en un toque agreste a hierbas aromáticas, balsámicos, monte bajo.
En boca es vivo, amplio, acídulo, especiado, lleno de sabor y energía. La sensación de firmeza está presente en todo momento, gracias a su excelente estructura y a unos taninos firmes, maduros, de grandísima calidad. Elegante, lleno, ganando enteros copa a copa, cada vez más maduro y frutoso. Un Imperial sobrado de todo, muy al estilo de los vinos del 82 en Rioja. Se encuentra en un momento óptimo de consumo pero existe la sospecha de que una buena temporada de guarda podría domarlo y hacerle ganar muchos enteros.

This still feels so very youthful given its age; Quite full-bodied, the palate is packed with ripe cherries, tobacco and leather, with a nicely expressive finish; I would recommend a long decant if you drink now, with this continuing to provide pleasure for a long, long time

Drinks at Chez Simo (Chez Simo Bistro - Chicago, IL): Liked this quite a bit. Nice nutty, earthy, red-fruited aromas with airy but powerful. The palate was in a great place. Still retains a nice structure, with great spice notes, smokey nuts, cherries, plum, and earth. Can probably go many years.

Dinner at Chez Simo (Chicago, IL): Really gotta stop opening young Rioja. Heh. This comes off with a very reticent nose, not showing very much except a hint of oak and vanilla, and a larger dose of leather. Whoa, this is leathery. The palate has the same qualities about it. It's quite demure, but with a charming floral tone that ought to get bigger in magnitude with more air/age. There's a lot of fruit in the background as well that I imagine will just need more time to come around. This bottle did look like a late release -- the label was pristine.

Rioja: Classic vs Modern (Riga): Aroma of wilted autumn flowers, dried roses, dried berries, a touch of barnyard, acidity can be felt already on the nose. With time the nose develops into a beautiful honey aromas and gets more balanced. Quite high acidity on the palate, mushrooms, medium light body. A good example of classic traditional Rioja.

At RWC "El Museo Del Vino" tasting, NYC. Has everything. Mellowed red fruits and tobacco nose, deep and broad palate, tremendous length. Fresh, vibrant, pure, with a rock-solid core. Proof, along with Riojanas Monte Real G.R. of the same vintage, that 1982 Rioja is highly underrated -- maybe as good here as in Bordeaux. Will improve 20-30 years and last forever. Has all the specific attributes identified by Richard Jennings below plus some fleeting animale. 95?
