Part of Cuvée Frédéric Emile vertical 2023-04-19: Deep golden color. High intensity. On the nose, there is lots of honey, saffron, petroleum, almond, and lemon peel. The taste includes honey, lemon peel, and saffron with a very long, enjoyable finish. One participant thought this wine was too mature.

Superbe !

October Wine Dinner in DC (Eric's House in DC): One of the better Rieslings I've had, but still waiting for the variety to really blow me away. The nose was a touch reticent with some classic petrol, and light fruits. Better on the palate with nice rich maturing fruit (apricot, brown apple), light bitter notes on the finish. Best between 2-4 hrs open. Got a touch disjointed after 5 hrs open.

Badly needed at least an hour of air to get going. Lots of petrol at first, which mostly blew off. Powerful, ripe tree fruit and underripe/green tropical fruit, hints of florals, still plenty of fruit left at age 20, lots of extract, powerful earthy flavors. Really superb and distinctive. Wish I could have spent more time

Owing to fears of oxidation, I have been rapidly drinking up my stash of the 1998 CFE. This bottle was absolutely on point, with all the bones showing, a mineral bath in a glass. Peach and floral aromatics and a subtle richness on the palate kept the wine from being completely austere, but what was ultimately the focus, and completely satisfying in its own right, was that skeleton of what makes Riesling, and CFE. There's only one bottle left, and to hell with it, I'll risk the demons and see what happens after another long sleep.

Great intensity, depth, length. Much more forward than the 1996, less acidity, but still very much alive on the second day (actually, even better) – no signs of fading what so ever. Precision, precision. (dinner chez moi)

Medium to golden straw with a nose of gentle botrytis, ripe, fleshy soft peaches and kiwi and petroleum. Quite insistent acidity in the mouth, beautifully balanced with ripe white fruits, apple and pear. This is what great Alsace Riesling is all about for me, and nobody does it better than Trimbach. Down to the last 5 bottles from 4 cases I bought when first released. If this bottle is typical (it may not be, I have had several oxidized bottles over the years) then it will drink well for another couple of years. But it won't get any better.

Trimbach Clos Ste. Hune & Cuvee Frederic Emile Vertical with James Handford MW (Handford Wines, London): Quite a bit of colour here, almost golden, dark yellow. Looks a lot order than the 04 & 01 we had before and looked a lot more dense. Light “petrolly” feel as expected, a touch of oxidation. Dense wine, mineral, light caramel feel and generally felt riper. The structure is there of course, proper acidity provides the backbone to the wine. But its rounding off and not as sharp as its younger brothers we tried before. No sharp edges here and pretty long finish. 92/93 and very nice. In its drinking window.

Rich yellow-golden in colour, very ripe fruit notes, a hint of baked apples, slightly raisiny. On the palate well evolved, very round with nice acidic lift towards the long and lingering finish. Not enormously complex but very nice. My favourite CFE in the line-up, drink soon. 91-93

Nose of citrus fruits, mango and petrol. Hints at being past its peak. Palate is dry, but not nearly as dry as the Clos Ste. Hune (1990). Thick, but crisp and refreshing. Nice mingling of petrol and citrus notes.

A Dinner Framed by Frederic Emile (Foreign Cinema, San Francisco): Deep yellow. Some petrol and yellow peach. Just off dry. Excellent, sneaky acidity which is more than it initially seems. A full tone darker than the '97 and completely different aromatics-lower tone, less floral with ripe yellow peach fruit. Less secondary development too. Denser, younger and less bright than that wine. Neither of these were particularly mineral. While initially this smelled more impressive than its older stable mate, it did less in the glass and in the end seemed a bit dull.

Golden colored. Lots of petrol on the nose. Bone dry, with just a hint of residual sugar, and as a result, didn't pair as well as I would have liked with a spicy Thai dish. Really nice on its own however- brightly acidic, young, and fruity. My first "aged" CFE- this was much more approachable than these wines' fairly austere flavor profile on release. Worth the wait.

Beautiful wine. Pale gold. Lemon-lime, chalky, powdered stone aromas, dead-on typical of CFE. Arguably at peak, although plenty of life ahead of this wine. Middle weight, fine acidity, great feel in the mouth, and very persistent finish. Paired with Thai food, outstanding.

This is really in a nice place, full-bodied with tangy acids, petrolly nose, on the palate citrus with a bit of peach and tropical fruit. Nice texture, very good length. With some air the petrol notes blend with some florally/jasmine scents. Drinking well but no hurry. A-/B+

The color reveals that the wine is already at an advanced stage of its trajectory. The nose, in perpetual evolution, reveals honey, candy and some agrumes. Captivating. The wine is medium-bodied, nicely balanced with residual sweetness that combines harmoniously with the other elements to build a structure which is never too powerful, but perfectly enjoyable as such. The complexity which was discerned in the nose is also present in the mouth. Good length. Top Riesling.

Incredibly tightly wound and unyielding at first, but opens with time to reveal intense minerally flavours with rocks and stones dominating gentler flavours of lime, lemon and touches of honey. Tremendous precision and clarity here with bright acidity and an almost solid, rocky texture in the back of the mouth that builds with time. Awesome - I can only imagine what this will be like when mature.

Mature and Near Mature Trimbach, Burgundy, and Bordeaux (Palena, Washington, D.C.): Medium yellow color, almost identical to the Clos Ste. Hune of the same year next to which this was tasted. Much more grapefruit on the nose of this one. Drinking very well now with classic dry fruit, medium weight and terrific acidity. This became a bit fatter than the Clos Ste. Hune, but this comment must be taken in context of the lean Trimbach style. The level of quality was so close to that of the more expensive wine that I'm sure most people would prefer to have and drink 3 bottles of this rather than one of the Clos Ste. Hune. An illuminating comparison.

Nose shows oily petrolly, slightly creamy peachy fruit, plenty of spice and a hint of mineral. Complex and ripe. Slightly off dry and quite plump on the palate with lovely, contrasting brisk acidity. Peaches show on the initial attack and then lime and orange notes before the tangy acidity carries a long, orangey and minerally finish. Really quite mature, indeed probably a point with plenty of oily/petrolly complexity but still plenty of fruit. Excellent.

Medium straw yellow. Lovely, complex nose, a whiff of kerosene then apples, lime and minerals. Lightly honeyed, just a hint of peach. On the palate, medium bodied but with lovely viscosity and thrilling acidity, this shows good depth with apples and peaches on the initial attack, followed by minerals and lime on the long finish. Lovely, really starting to shine but still with a long life ahead of it.

Ordered from a restaurant wine list for 60 euro, which is a reasonable price. Served at exactly the right temperature (not too cold), this shone beautifully tonight. Mouth coating ripe fruit with undertones of citrus and lemon peel, already a hint of petrol, lots of glycerol and a nice mineral touch. I could drink this all week and never tire.

A solid, balanced, minerally, food-friendly Riesling. It's really good stuff, but unlike most tasters I don't enjoy it quite as much as the less-touted '99. The '98 shows mostly slate and yeasty lime notes; the '99 shows the same thing, but I think adds more nuance with petrol and ripe honey notes. Still, it's hard to go wrong either way. This bottling is always a winner, at a fair price to boot.

An extremely elegant riesling. The nose opens up with raw petrol and rubber. Once the wine opens up a bit, lime, minerals and steel come through. Throughout, the wine remains subdued and dry. Tasting the last glass makes you wonder whether you have been too impatient to be able to taste how the wine would develop in the next hour. This one has still a lot of life left.

Lunch With In-Laws; Janasse VV 98, Clos des Pape 94: I always forget how good the Cuvee Emile is, and then I try it, tell myself to buy more than forget it till I try it again. Note to self - buy the 1999! This was a lone bottle in my wine fridge that I though would go well with the Crab pasta, well it did, and may even have been the star of the lunch. Incredible mineral laced petrol and beeswax nose, remarkable rocky concentration on the palate. A citrus Catherine wheel in the mouth, which envelops the senses, yet never feels heavy or forced. Really something.

This wine has a medium lemon colour core. A medium + intensity developed bouquet showing minerals, green apple. Honeyed with a whiff of kerosene and lime. A dry Riesling which retains good (medium +) acidity. Medium bodied with medium + intense green apple n the palate with peach and mineral hints and honey coming through on a good length, well balanced finish. There is no doubt this is a good to very good quality wine, well balanced with good depth and starting to develop some compexity. Further it has the depth and structure to develop more complexity over at least the next 5 years. However it disappointed a little compared to when last tasted (3/04) - perhaps going through something of a mute/transitionary phase?

Pale straw yellow. Intense aromas of green apple, lime, honey and some kerosene. Complex, showing some signs of age. Dry, crisp acidity and quite full bodied, this is very pronounced on the palate with lemon, lime and some crisp green apple. Huge, well balanced finish with notes of honey. Excellent quality alsace riesling, just about drinking, should cellar well over long-term.

A wonderful bottle - the last one I'd had was yellow and oxidised, this was young, pale and delicious. Seems to be a bit of bottle variation in the notes here - I guess it's probably reaching the end of its reliability life.

Oil, peach, citrus, a touch of honey and minerals but it's missing the intensity I'd like. Solid finish. I'm not thinking this will get much better.

Served at an outdoor dinner in extreeme heat. Paired wonderfully with gazpacho. Notes and impression are very general in anature, due to the extreme heat. The wine showed very well, as ready to drink, and with the typical CFE terrior. Softerned and drinking well. A great overall impression. Look forward to trying this wine in more agreeable conditions.
