The nose is not very clean initially but it blows off in the third innings of the night. A combination of meat, tobacco, dark fruit, earth and spice on the palate. Deep and powerful with good length. It still retains generous fruit for its age. Good on a standalone but unfair against an excellent 70 La Tache.

Given its 41 years, this is a wonderful wine. Light bodied, the nose and the palate show jelly of forest strawberries, with some black tea and white tobacco in the background. Tannins are extremely fine and completely integrated. Short to medium length. An unforgettable moment to have been able to taste such a mythic wine. This shows the greatness of Burgundy's terroir.

Clos de Tart Dinner (Tocqueville): Absolutely gorgeous. A wide spectrum of highly expressive aromatics reminiscent of any top ‘78. Cherry compote, cigar tobacco, dark chai teas and spices, gamey meat, damp leathers, red cherry and cranberry. Smells just wonderful. Dried red rose petals. Palate is soft and elegant with all the same detailed flavors that the nose promises, still youthful and bright. Earl grey. Soft raspberry.

Part of a 1978 Burgundy tasting hosted by Acker at Cru on 11/11/09. Allen Meadows gave this wine an 85 and in the bottle it looked brownish. In glass it looked fresh. Big Spicy nose. Typical CDT in the mouth but more so, rich, earthy, dried tea and white
