Fun to drink, though not something I'd make a habit of; quite thick, rich and sweet - I tend to prefer something with more acidity and vibrancy and less overt sweetness, but fun nonetheless.

Great dessert wine. Many qualities of a nice 20yr Tawney yet not the alcohol burn. Pretty fresh on the palate and yet no syrup on texture. A stand out when you want a dessert wine but not the thick sweet character of one an if you are wanting a port but not the heaviness of one.

4 Medium brown in color with floral nuance overtones persisting over lemon head candy, brown sugar, and fig. Lusciously sweet with medium acidity. More hard candy, brown sugar, and a layer of creme brûlée on the palate. An exemplar from Rutherglen. Excellent.

This went great with Lynn's delicious bourbon and Coke chocolate Bundt cake that she whipped up for Cathy's birthday. This muscat is a great finisher whatever the occasional. And at under $14, a definite steal. Last bottle in my cellar, but definitely getting more

Finally got to this wine, bought in 2005. Deep brown color with an extraordinary velvety, viscous feeling in the mouth. Rich bouquet and flavor of toffee, highlighted by just the right amount of acidity. Excellent balance and depth with a long finish. Very nice and very cheap.
Really aromatic with notes of dried fruits, burnt toffee and chocolate. Really rich and unctuous with a lovely sweetness but balanced by good acidity. Powerful and intensely flavoured with a nutty rancio character, dark chocolate and a baked fruit note. Really long and superb value as always for under £10.

Very soft on the palate, seems lacking in structure. Masses of sweet caramel, butter and toffee notes - so flavorful and rich. Almost too sweet really, but fun to drink and there is quality there. After opening, I put half the bottle in the refrigerator and finished it two months later; it was still lovely and hadn't oxidized at all as far as I could taste.

Hearthstone amber with a molasses tint. Alcoholic nose; sharpie. Strong molasses, syrupy body, alcohol is biting. Its trying to be a PX but falls very short.

Bottle purchased in 2009. Still good, but probably should be drunk sooner than later. Less vanilla & caramel than I noted in a prior bottle, more of dates/figs/dried fruits. Shows clear sweetness but maintains a body that is lighter than expected. Interesting. Decent length in a finish that shows some lighter fruits

This bottle was part of a mixed auction lot, so I am not sure how old it was. Nowhere near as good as a phenomenal bottle of Yalumba 50 year Tawny I recently opened, but still a very nice wine. Not over-the-top rich, good acidity, long and persistent finish.

Handsome amber color. Aromas (a lot going on here) molasses, tea, hints of honey and orange. Palate, licorice, profoundly sweet, and syrupy. Long smooth exotic finish.

Australian Outback Tasting (Miami, FL): This has hints of the nuttiness of a Pedro Ximenez Solera, balanced by the acidity of a Sauternes, but does not reach the heights of neither. Well made and quite enjoyable, but not memorable.

Looks like thin maple syrup, lots of residual sugar in glass. Smells mostly of raisin, with hints of other dried fruit. Complex taste, very sweet: raisin, mocha, caramel, with a finish like biting into a crisp green apple that was somehow infused with the other flavors.
Note: I did burn my tongue on some soup earlier.

Thick, smooth, balanced, long finish. Maybe best alone for dessert, as it is so strong. Like a tawny port, but thicker and sweeter. Harmonious flavors of oak, caramel, orange and raisin. It will get your attention. Amazing qpr for less than 20 USD. Excellent now, could last my lifetime.

Motor oil viscosity, Very dark and full of wonderful toffee & coffee flavors. Sweet but with ample acidity to balance it all out. the perfect wine to compliment caramel rich desserts. Very hedonistic when you feel like something big & sassy. From a bottle that was purchased 7 years ago, this will probably last for another 2 generations. Amazing QPR.

Caramel, prune, plum - deep flavor profile, but a bit cloying in the finish. My preference in the the desert category is more to ice and late harvest, which I would drink over this muscat anytime.

Beautiful color strong hedonistic nose and palate with a long finish, I really enjoyed this with caramelized white chocolate and barley cremeux, kumquat and sorrel at Oxheart in Houston. a fine dessert/after dinner drink reminded me of a tawny port but lighter on the palate.

Followed a dinner flight of Shirazes and Syrahs from both Worlds. Burnt-orange-amber in the glass. Nutty, toffee notes, somewhat sherry-like. Nice acid balance. Not cloying, and a good counterpoint to the desserts of chocolate and vanilla cakes.

Delicious stuff. On the nose honey, flowers, dried apricot, orange sest, nuts. Veru round and full taste has notes of raisins, almonds and dried stonefruits. Could have had more acidity to compliment that high amount of sugar, but still a great wine.

Notes not taken. Not decanted. Perfect clean cork, big thick slow-running legs. Lovely dark amber smoky color. Nice tawny alcoholic nose with tofee and caramel notes. Taste has heat on front end but good big brown sugar, caramel, warm bread, and toffee. Long finish around 1 1/2 minutes. Not a 98 pointer as Parker'd, but solid big style 93 pts. Easily can cellar for a decade, and great now as well with chocolate brownies.

Appearance: Clear, medium (-) intensity tawny colour with yellowish brown rims and legs Nose: Clean, medium (+) intensity and fully developed aromas of rose, prune, oak, smoke, orange peel, raisin, ginger Palate: Sweet with medium acidity and fortified medium alcohol. Full body, with medium (+) intensity flavors of prune, raisin, plum, smoke, nut, cedar, cinnamon, orange peel and rose petals. Medium (+) length. Conclusion: Good quality Rutherglen Muscat with intense nose and palate, showing complex characters in different dimensions. The sweetness is balanced by the acidity making the wine not cloying and enjoyable even by itself. A good length making this wine a perfect dessert wine for the day. Ready to drink now and can be maintained for another 10-15 years.

Mahogany coloured with a raisined, nutty nose. There is a little hint of the 19% alcohol in there too. Full, very sweet and viscous, coating the palate with nutty rancio flavours. There is a little sour fruit sharpness at the back of the palate which gives it a bit of freshness. Good, but not as complex and unctuous as previous bottles.

It's hard to differentiate between the aroma and taste. It's pretty consistent regarding both. There were lots of prunes, raisins, caramel, and an ever so slight hint of apple pie spices. This wine was great. Loved it better than the ports I've had and it wasn't as mediciney as some medeira's I've had as well. This was a wonderful experience and totally worth the trouble finding.

(home tasting) Slightly different than the last time, probably due to serving temperature. Very sweet but with the alcohol being too obvious at the beginning. Plum, honey, walnut liquer, dried fig, caramel, chocolate, raisin, toasted nuts. Medium length aftertaste, that makes you want more.

Fantastic stuff – continues to amaze at this price point. Dark brown caramel/cola color. Thick sticky legs. Powerful raisin-dominated nose. Thick full-bodied palate with raisin and plum notes and orange peel towards the long lasting finish. A superb QPR for dessert wine. Had this with a variety of desserts and cheeses following several earlier wines. Loved the caramel notes of this without the cloying nature that I've found in many dessert wines. A white wine in theory, the solera aging nevertheless imparts an ever-so-slightly-translucent red-amber color. It is also fairly viscous, almost like an aged, reduced cherry juice. The nose is huge and includes prunes with cinnamon dust, cloves, figs, melted brown sugar, and toffee. On the palate, there was a bewildering complexity of flavors. Raisins and prunes dominate, but there is a nice note of dark, stewed cherries, as well - a bit reminiscent of Dr. Pepper. There were still spice notes, too, although they were less prominent than they were on the nose. The melted brown sugar continues on the palate, and this was borderline cloying, but the sweetness does give way to just barely enough acidity and bitterness to call to mind candied orange peel and powdered cocoa on the finish. The wine is very smooth in the mouth, and it coats the palate thoroughly. While this gives it a very long finish (well over a minute), it does mean you have to be careful what you serve it with. Personally, I just serve it alone, but it could also go with vanilla ice cream as a nice contrast, or it could be served with a huge, thick, nut-based winter dessert like pecan pie as a partner. This wine will overwhelm most other offerings. If you don't mind a lot of sweet, this wine is an amazing value at the $18 price I paid for a 375ml bottle.
Edit: After looking over the Yalumba website, it seems this is not solera-aged, but rather hand-blended into a house style more like a cognac would be. 7-year average age.

Love this wine. Intense caramel, fig, raisin, with a bit of smokiness. Good structure, not cloying, with just enough backbone. Bought this bottle some years ago (close to 10?) and it's just as good if not a bit better than it was upon release. (PE: 95)

The colour of polished cherry-wood. A noticeable level of alcohol on the nose with marzipan and raisin. Incredibly sweet, almost intoxicating. Blackcurrant and cherry notes on the attack which reveal maple syrup, liqueur coffee and a rich, intense caramel-hazlenut flavour in the very long finish.

Wow! Bought this about 10 years ago and compleetly forgot about it. Served at cellar temp, on the cool side. Certainly rich with winey, nutty notes of caramel, coffee, maple syrup and citrus, but, with good airtime, has sufficient lift and is not at all hot or cloying. Very pleasant surprise, really enjoyed this (over about 2 weeks).

Dark tawny color. Nose very much like port: raisins/prunes, some caramelized brown sugar. Also some aspects of sherry, especially hazelnut and some other nuts. Nose is very light for a fortified wine. A bit strong on the palate with the alcohol, but lots of port-like flavors come through: raisins, some pit fruits on the aftertaste. Very long aftertaste that changes, lots of cacao and coffee... runs 30 seconds. Honestly, not my style but I can appreciate the complexity for the price.

Great, rich, deep nose--caramel, vanilla bean, figs, dried apricots, orange marmalade, maple syrup..gobs of great scents in here. All of this comes through on the palate with a small trace of sugar and a thick mouthfeel, but without being overly dense. Just super rich wine. Some acid presses up against the sweet, rich, enjoyable finish that focuses on brown sugar, mild baking spices, all kinds of dried fruits--white fruits, orange fruits, pit fruit, etc etc. Flavors last quite a while...very impressive. Dense, big, thick, but without being syrupy. Hard to drink more than a glass of given the richness, but delicious.

Very, very thick brown dessert -- a little goes a long way. Sweetness balances not with the acidity but the alcohol -- a very fine mix. Aroma and taste of molasses, raisin, and chocolate. An excellent value, and would recommend to people who want something sticky and not a Sauternes.

Great stuff – for certain – but I’m not convinced this merits Parker’s score. Dark tawny-amber color with deceptively thick legs. Raisins, wood, and alcohol on the nose. Dense raisin and plum with orange peel and caramel flavors on the long finish. Very sweet, but not cloyingly so. Not particularly complex. The QPR here is incredible – possibly the finest value in dessert wine I’ve ever come across. A fantastic Aussie sticky.

As a port drinker, I felt a little let down by the lack of spice or complexity here, but it's still a very fine product. Very very smooth, and everyone was very happy with it. Sweet, but not too sweet, and a nice caramel hint that went down very well indeed.

A gift from friends for my birthday, this was delicious after Thanksgiving dinner at home. Tawny brown color, clear. Nose and taste replete with burnt sugar as on creme brulee, almonds, caramel, and if there is a fruit flavor there, it may be fig. Concentrated but light on the tongue, sweet but not cloying, and a long finish. My impression is this is an excellent value for the price.

Some differences in this bottle and the last. I received these two bottles (this one from this tasting and another yet unopened) were purchased at auction, site unseen. I was concerned about the age of the bottles and the condition of the vino, as it was quite apparent that this bottle has set in storage (horizontally thank goodness) by the dark stains on the inside of the bottle where this sweet wine had settled and not been moved.
Very dark toast color, not a beautiful soft auburn but a bit lifeless. This bottle brought a lot of raisin and sweet maple syrup to the forefront. Lengthy finish but lacking in depth and complexity. Disappointed in this bottle. I still love Yalumba and this particular wine. I think this bottle probably had a neglected life before finiding a home in my cellar.

Burnt apricot color in the glass and crystal clear. Gorgeous nose and equally lovely palate of honey and carmel. Perhaps a little of that apricot sneaks back into the glass on the finish, as well as a toasted mocha teaser. This finish lingers on and on. This is truly an exceptional wine.

Tawny brown color. The highly concentrated nose displays loads of raisins, molasses, walnuts, windex, and burnt sugar. In the mouth, the palate is a tidal wave of raisins, walnuts, brown sugar, figs, caramel, and molasses. It is amazing that although this wine is full-bodied, it does not come across as thick or ponderous because the acidity is prefectly balanced with the fruit. The finish is packed and extremely long. Overall, it is quite an intense wine, but it maintains a lightness that is admirable.

This was an outstanding wine, but no where near a 98 point wine. The flavor is excellent with roasted nuts and maple syrup. My problem is the sweetness, which I find to be too strong and bordering on cloying and syrupy. I had a Yalumba 50 year old last year that was far superior. Acid is good, with even a bit of citrus, but not enough to cut the sugar. 91 points factors in the fact that it is VERY CHEAP. Outstanding QPR.

This was opened at Haggis' house last week. This is a Parker 98 pointer that sells for about $16. This is now 98 point wine but then I new that since I have had other Aussie stickies that Parker has over rated. This was an outstanding wine but not a classic. Very concentrated. Thick and viscous texture. It needed better balance to rate higher in my opinion. Notes of maple syrup and brown sugar. Almost too syrupy I think. 92 points.

Syrupy raisins, sherry and figs. This drink is very gentle. There's a touch of heat throughout and a slight bite at the end. As the long finish fades I find myself reaching for the glass for more. Perfectly good by itself or with dark chocolate if you want to be decadent

Nice deep amber, crystal clear. Slightly port like, nose of smoky cedar, nuts, dried raisins, maple sugar, and a touch of pumpkin pie. Nice glycerine mouth feel, with a well balanced acidity, alcohol is present but not overwhelming. Sweet, slightly syrupy. Definitely a dessert wine, not one you will have many glasses of, but you will finish what you get.

Caramel, raisins, toasted nuts. If these flavors were alone, it would be delicious. The syrupiness of the wine is a bit overbearing, however. It's not particularly balanced, although it is impressively smooth. Like most dessert wines, it has a nice long finish (something about the sugars, maybe?). If this had a bit more acid it might be unbelievable, but as it stands, it's pretty cloying. If you're going to serve it, serve it cold and in small portions.

As other notes indicate -- maple, caramel, brown sugar, raisins, orange peel, toffee, little heat, not too sweet, delicious stuff, great value. Serving suggestion: open and recork whenever in advance (could be days), store in fridge. Pour when you clear dinner dishes, serve 20 minutes later when it has warmed up but not all the way. Smooth as silk.

On the nose, floral notes, honey and caramel. On the palate, thick and syrupy, with raisins, honey, walnuts and caramel/marmalade. Drink by itself or over ice cream.

Hazy notes from a few days ago. Not as impressed as I had hoped with this Oz stickie. A little cloying, but certainly rich, tasty and variety correct. Very good, but not excellent in my books (B+).

Dark amber, very thick in the glass. The nose has some interest and complexity, showing dried fruit, brown sugar, some wood, and alcohol. On the palate this is very thick, soft, round and sweet. There is tons of maple syrup on the palate. Would this be good over pancakes??? The palate lacks complexity. The finish has persistence and shows notes of cinnamon. There is just barely enough acidity to keep it from being cloyingly sweet. I find this to be best straight out of the fridge as the cold temperature helps hide some of the sugar. 50 + 5 + 12 + 14 + 7

Too sweet. Lacks complexity. Very pleasant honey, vanilla, maple bouquet. Starts with nice honey-vanilla, fig, date, brown sugar flavor, but quickly dissolves into sugary one-note finish with a short acidic bite. Not bad for the price, and honest - in that it is not trying to be anything more than it is. Good value dessert wine, but not a very good wine independent of price.

A little bit goes a long way. Intensely sweet, on the verge of cloying, but not quite. Flavors of maple and molasses that somehow find their way out of the sweetness to make their presence known. Reminds me of maple sugar candy, if eaten in large amounts it can be sickeningly sweet, but in small amounts it is heavenly. For the price, why not have some around, it's great stuff. Appearence (5/5) Nose (13/15), Taste and Finish (17/20), Quality and Potential (10/10)

Wow! Maple syrup in a glass! The initial attack is all mpale seet goodness, but then it evolves on the palate and lingers there for ages. Would be stunning alongside a creme brulee or caramel dessert. Amazing QPR.

A magnificent dessert wine tasted over several nights. My notes are consistent with a friend’s. The perhaps perfect nose is incredibly complex, with primary notes of black cherry, raisined fruits, and burnt caramel, accompanying secondary and tertiary notes of anise, flowers, charcoal, pumice, and who knows what else. The palate of great balanced acidity begins with similar black cherry and fig flavors before moving to raisins. The only noticeable flaw is the almost cloying finish, which is all but completely subdued when matched with chocolates or other sweet desserts. Nevertheless, the finish lasts for nearly a full minute. Overall, this wine comes highly recommended, and who knows what complexity years aging will bring? AMAZING.

Delicious drunk by itself as a dessert, with persistent notes of maple syrup, toffee, brown sugar, fig newtons and a higher toned note of cherry. Lacked the spherical smoothness of the best stickies to score higher, but a mouthful of flavor that doesn't cloy makes this a real winner. Yum!

One of my favorite dessert wines, and arguably our house desset wine at home. Carmel, raisin, fig, brown sugar, but surprisingly light on its feet. And for $11 a half bottle, one of the great values if you like this style of wine.

Wow, what a delicious stickie and great QPR! The typical array of aromas and flavors -- brown sugar, maple syrup, toffee, caramel, raisins, prunes, figs, molasses -- are present in abundance. This is a very rich, satisfying Aussie dessert wine. Perhaps not the most subtle or refined I've experienced (the Chambers Grand Muscat is currently my favorite) but at $12.95/half-bottle this is a knock-out!! Highly recommended.

Very deep amber in colour with a light tint on the edges. Lots of legs on this one. Almost Tawny like on the nose, raisins, coffee, orange peels and prailine. This wine is not as fat on the pallate as it looks in the glass. Elegant, yet still a high power dessert wine. On the taste wild flowers, caramel and a bit of heat on the finish. For 10 bucks or whatever this was, its a great buy.

Had this at the 3rd annual steak out at Grossie's. Very port-like on the nose, but the similarity ends there. First time I've had Muscat, but should get more. Like the Buller better as it seemed more complex in aroma and taste. Both good.

Always one of my favourite Aussie stickies. For the price this is unbeatable. Lovely amber colour. Deep, very intense nose, loads of caramel, orange, orange peel, . On the palate this just sings. Really rich, with lovely caramelised orange, fig and molasses flavours. Still has some acidity to balance all of the sweetness. Absolutely gorgeous. Finish just last and lasts with fig, caramel, honey notes. This had been open for at least a week.

Warm-up Tasting at Mo's (Charbonniere, Mitolo, Greenock) (Mo's Place): Nice end to the night, this wine is right up there with Chambers for my favorite Aussie dessert wines. Lots of caramel, dates, figs with this faint but consistent presence of orange on the nose and palate. Really nice dessert wine, lingers on the palate for a long time.

Great sticky, have saved half for tonight to see where it goes. On day one, great smooooth palate presence, with almost no touch of heat (when served at proper temperature), orange, cream, and figs in the mouth with a wonderfully expressive vanilla syrup nose. As befitting a wine with the viscosity of this one, the finish is predictably long. Much, much better than the Buller wines at this same price point.

Amber brown in the glass, this bottle was very similar to previous examples of this wine with aromas and flavors of figs, dates, caramel, prunes and butterscotch. A little heat on the long finish but a well made and very enjoyable wine. 50+12+12+8+8 = 90.

Dinner at Abood's. (Michel's.): It’s been about five or so years since I last had one of these. Don’t even know what they cost anymore, but back then they were around $12 and offered good value for a sweet treat. This one took some time to get going. Upon opening VA aromas and flavors dominated. It showed medicinal notes with burnt sugar and alcohol, but was not all that pleasant. After being in the glass for half an hour or so, the VA started to blow off, the wine filled in, dried figs made an appearance and the burnt sugar took on a less harsh note and became more molasses-like. Not particularly complex, but enjoyable. B+/A-.

Nose of a cheap liquor but tasted much sweeter, caramel, honey, oats with a hints of butter and nutty fruit, 19% alcohol is well disguised, not a ton of complexity, finish was shorter than I was expecting and not much chance of improving with age

We have become enamored with these Muscats, Tokays and Tawnies from the Rutherglen region. The quality level on the Museum releases in particular are fabulous with our favories being Buller's and Chambers ... and now add Yalumba to the list. This wine has huge aromas of caramel, raisins and apricots with a palate that very closely resembles the nose. The finish is long and explosive with no alcohol burn. What a great experience. Can't wait to try the Yalumba 50 Year Old Tawny that should arrive in the next few days.

Palate: Sweet with medium acidity and fortified medium alcohol.

Drank well over the better portion of a week and drinking slightly better than 2 years ago.

Serving suggestion: open and recork whenever in advance (could be days), store in fridge. Pour when you clear dinner dishes, serve 20 minutes later when it has warmed up but not all the way. Smooth as silk.

Yum!

Really rich, with lovely caramelised orange, fig and molasses flavours. Still has some acidity to balance all of the sweetness. Absolutely gorgeous. Finish just last and lasts with fig, caramel, honey notes. This had been open for at least a week.
