Had a 1972 vintage on the previous night and it was corked. Didn’t have much expectation. And I was lucky this time round. The wine is singing. Pronounced nose with notes of mushroom, forest floor, spices, toast, cooked red and black fruits. Medium acidity and medium tannin. Medium finish. Will not improve and do not decant.

1972 Bordeaux horizontal tasting: First wine of Pauillac flight. Have had the 72 Mouton a couple times now and this bottle confirms the earlier tastings. Fairly thin with sous bois and a touch of remaining fruit.

Magnum. Decanted for 2 hours before serving. Still quite sour without much fruit left. Flat. It was better afterwards with some hint of wood. Well pass the peak.

Chateau Mouton 1972. 91p

The nose on this wine opened up over the course of an hour in the decanter. Heavy bricking and notably transparent. Aromas of cigar box, celery, charred green bell pepper, cherry, rasapberry, and old dry cedar shavings. Notably red fruited. Some would find this wine past prime but I enjoy this very mature profile. The palate has zero tannin and very high red fruited acidity. The palate is quite hollow and short, though I found it to be alive with the acid keeping it fresh. Slightly better than expected in this difficult vintage.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild before upgrading, already over the peak and no tannin is left. Slightly acidity and balance is not kept, aromas start to deteriorate

Intense dark ruby core with good vibrant brownish rims. Nice expressive nose of tobacco, cigar box, dried herbs, earth and some blackcurrant. Beautiful and elegant nose. Simply the nose of the night among the 3 aged wines. Smooth, supple and elegant, along with tobacco, cigar box, earthy and chalky notes. Still got nice freshness and blackcurrant on palate with balance acidity. Long lingering finish with soft chewy tannins. Not too impressive but it has nice balance and harmony. Amazing and what a surprise! This bottle is holding up nicely and lovely to drink. Another difficult vintage but it manage to transcend the poor and uneven vintage.

PnP at home. Better than expected but clearly not in the same league as the very good Latour from the same (bad) '72 vintage last year. Top shoulder fill. Bottom of cork crumbled and could not extract. A healthy ruby/light garnet with an only slightly browning rim. Earthy nose, strawberries on the palate, some leather. Relatively high acidity. Fine tannins. Rather short finish. Held up well in the open bottle before deteriorating around the 3h mark. 86-87

Regular dinner group (@ JvT): Very mature bouquet with chocolate and mocha. On the palate some sweetness and acidity and still some stuffing, but extremely tertiary and no fun at all anymore. No score.

(Blind) Klar, mild rød med svakt oransjestikk. Utviklet nese med skogbunn, sopp, lær og solbær. Hint av tranebær og lett bitre toner. Lett og tørr, sursøt frukt med smal kropp. Spiss syre. Tørre utgang med lette, tørre tanniner. Grei lengde, med lett innslag av tranebær.

Good ullage and lovely semi-deep scarlet tone. We had low expectations but the wine surprised us with a decent bouquet and was very enjoyable on the palate still showing fruit and good acidity

Drank as a joker in the wine club. Very disappointing, and definitely at least 10-15 years over the top. Unclear colour, "old" nose, - but still a Mouton!

Slow oxygenated for four hours before consumption. This had a deep red-brown color that was consistent throughout. It showed an intense nose of fresh asparagus which carried into the palate where it was joined by notes of celery. This exceeded expectations and was surprising drinkable for the amount of greenness it had. The half-bottle leftover the next day lost a lot of the asparagus/celery notes, having them replaced by some bell pepper and hints of cabernet fruit (cassis). For what it's worth, this was much better than the '72 Les Forts de Latour, which was drinkable, but no more in 1999.

Fairly light red Brown. Toasted oak and cassis in a light but pleasant bouquet. Light bodied and a lot of acidity. Soft tannin. Also cassis. Long and complex aftertaste. Good wine, can wait for a few years, but will not improve. The aftertaste is without any doubt the best part of the wine.

As good as you can make in '72; you can find everything in small proportions (vanilla, body, bitterness), sugar from chaptalisation, a certain balance; drink now.

The complexity is way decreased. No fruit but woody in a pleasing fashion. Really sense the time in this bottle. Great experience!
