Bottled Nov 2023. Sour citrus and glue solvents on the nose. Medium bodied with salty yet fresh zippy acidity showing succulent very sour fruit for an instant and vanishing away leaving one's palate as dry as a bone and ready for another slip. Nice layered textures and impressive quality given the volume of production. Loving the austerity of Sherry. It is still January and it cannot be fine white Burgundy every night of the week ;) !

Sigue proporcionando una perfecta combinación para comer todo tipo de tapas. Me encantan las notas de frutos secos. Una elección ideal y segura que continúa siendo minusvalorada.

Pre-Xmas Indulgence; 12/1/2023-12/22/2023 (Madrid y Alicante - España): Alicante business lounge. From a new bottle. Stale nuts from old wood on the nose. On the palate the traditional complexity of a wine always undervalued for its low 0price. For me it is still one of the best value for money relationships on the market.

It is a long time since I had a Tio Pepe or indeed any Fino sherry, which are almost impossible to find in rural France (this one was bought in Belgium). As always, this Tio Pepe is refreshing, bone dry, elegant, very slightly salty and nutty, filling the mouth with an invigorating dry fragrance and showing backbone and good length. The only fly in the ointment is that the price has gone up over 5+ years from c.€9 to c.€14 but this still represents excellent QPR. Very good.

P'Aquí P'Allá; 10/7/2022-10/17/2022 (Alicante y Madrid - España): Ideally served very cold in a hot morning, Suggestive stale aromas, of nuts and sour fruit. On the palate it is pungent, acidic, with much persistence thanks to this central acidity of unripe apples, usually indicative of long open time. Delicious and bitter. Always a guaranteed success that only snobbery despises.

This Fino is available almost everywhere, It's always consistent. You have to give them credit for that.
Pours a medium lemon. Lots of meyer lemon/zest notes here. Salt, baked biscuits, almonds. Overall it's more driven by the non-fruit notes than the primary ones. Medium + acid, medium body, medium + finish. Well balanced.

On the palate the wine is dry (bone dry, to be precise), with low acidity, low alcohol and a light body. Flavours are of medium(-) intensity and mirror the nose: bruised apple, chamomile, almon and nuts. The wine tastes lightly salty and quite bitter. The finish has medium(-) length.
This is a good quality wine since it has good typicity of Fino Sherry, shows medium aromatic complexity, and the alcohol is well-integrated. To be considered being of very good quality the wine would need to be less bitter and have greater complexity and in particular greater length.
The wine is defined by its freshness, which it would lose with further ageing in bottle, and the wine would ultimately become disjointed. It is hence ready to drink and not suitable for further ageing in bottle.

On the palate the wine is bone dry, with medium(-) acidity, low alcohol, and a light body. The flavour intensity is medium(-). Flavours are mostly tertiary and again include almond, leesy and yeasty notes, and apple. The mouthfeel is slightly coarse. The wine tastes salty, and has medium(-) length.
This is a good quality wine since it shows good typicity, and the alcohol is well integrated. To be of very good quality it would need a smoother texture, better intensity, and more length. The wine is ready to drink and not suitable for further aging in bottle.

For the price, it feels like we are stealing directly from the winery. What a fantastic deal.
It's savory, it's salty, it's nutty -- everything you'd want from a fino. Perhaps a touch shallow... but for $20 CAD (ie. 10 cents everywhere else in the developed world), you can't do much better.
Bank Holidays by the Sea; 5/28/2021-6/6/2021 (Alicante - España): Served from an open bottle surely before Christ. Thanks to this I detect a lot of walnut and it is slightly saline on the nose with a tuna mojama touch. On the palate it is glyceric, acute, dry, austere and very long. Now truly the summer season has begun. You can say it ...
Puedes decirlo ...

Pale yellow. Oxidised, slightly yeasty nose with notes of overripe apples and almonds. Mouthfeel is bone dry, quite oxidised, fresh, with notes of overripe apples, some brioche and almonds.
Nothing complicated, but a nice and very good value fino sherry.

Bottled 21 April 2020, 15% ABV. From Macharnudo and Carrascal, aged for 4-5 years under flor in American oak in the Tio Pepe solera. I have four tasting notes in 30 years, all about 7-10 years apart - you could say that I drink this wine regularly but not often... This rendition is quite convincing. Pale straw yellow colour; very expressive and complex nose, almond and hazelnut, brine and green olive, lemon zest, flowers and yeast, deep and fresh, woody warmth; the palate is dry and invigorating, fresh but not acidic, linear but not austere, with firm but pleasant bitters; very good resonance and length on the finish, with a lovely salty citrus touch. My best ever Tio Pepe. Excellent value.
Pale gold, with silvery hue, and starbright. Aromas of lemon curd, brioche, hint of almond, hazelnut, and brine. A briny lemony attack, then shows lots of the yeasty Flor characteristics, somewhat like white fungals, which blows off before it overwhelms, leaving some almond nuttiness. Am surprised that it's now pretty good, and a BIG improvement from the last time I had tasted. Perhaps a much better batch drawn from the Solera? Glad to have had at least this pretty positive experience!

The nose is clean with medium(+) intensity aromas. There are primary aromas of citrus fruit (overripe lemon), secondary aromas of autolytic characters (sourdough bread), oak (butterscotch), and tertiary aromas of almond and honey. There is also a note of nail polish remover. This wine is fully developed.
On the palate, the wine is dry with medium(-) acidity, low alcohol [for fortified wines], and medium body. The flavour intensity is medium showing primary notes of citrus fruit (overripe lemon), herbal characters (thyme), secondary aromas of autolytic characters (sourdough bread, uncooked pizza dough), oak (butterscotch), and tertiary aromas of almond and honey. The nail polish remover note also shows on the palate. The finish has a medium(+) length.
Very good quality wine; drink now, not suitable for ageing.

Lot’s of rotten apple on the nose. Bread dough, almond and stony minerality.
The mouthfeels of the wine is delightfully light and crisp, perhaps slightly oily. Granny Smith apple, preserved lemon, ground almond, green olive brine and slight smoky ness.
Nice citrusy and mineral finish.
Very nice. Sharp and crisp. Nothing too serious but good value.

MNB: Sherry (Home (Noe st)): (blind) Medium amber. Sharp dusty curried dried carrot note (flor). Feels around 15% alcohol. Warm, dry, saline, crisp. Very nice. Slight undercurrent of yellow and browned apples, but not much.
Guess: Aged under Flor, a Fino or Manzanilla, with a bit of age (not quite fresh). I'm guessing generic Fino, 1.5 years since bottling.
Actually: Tio Pepe palomino fino.... bottled 10 years ago.

Pale gold. Aromas of Marcona almonds, bruised orchard fruits and mottled banana. Very dry and slightly savory on the palate, showing toasted almonds, light olive brine and artificial banana fragrance. Finishes with unmistakable oxidative notes redolent of unripe, decaying fruit. Interesting drink.

Oh my. When I first received this and unpacked it, it was seeping down the side of the bottle. That didn't give me much confidence. The cork stopper literally fell out of the bottle when I peeled off the foil. But the sherry was a delight. Rich, complex, and one of my favourites in a lineup of 8 excellent sherries at our annual Sherry Xmas event.

(Bottled 14.06.2017) Pale gold/straw colour. Nose: Green apples, hay, nuts (mainly almonds), fresh sea water, green olive brine, chamomile flowers, a little yeast. (89p) Taste: The arrival is nutty and flowery (mainly chamomile), then come salinity, olive brine, citrus (mainly lemon). These flavours stay the course all through the exit and into the aftertaste, with lemon taking the lead. Long aftertaste. Quite full bodied. Somehow manages to be bone dry without seeming dry, very refreshingly acidic without seeming acidic (91p) I think this is the most structured Tio Pepe I’ve had to date, again confirming this wine as the world’s best generally available value-for-money wine purchase. In my humble opinion this wine is - quality wise - on par with white burgundies at 5-6 times the price. I imagine this being the result of the forward looking ageing/solera practices of the Jerezanos as well as Antonio Flores and his team just getting better and better at their job of nurturing and selecting barrels for bottling (or have they perhaps cut back just a little on the heavy filtering....?). Total score 90 points.
Semana de Reyes; 1/1/2018-1/7/2018 (Madrid): Served in a generous catavinos glass. It never let me down. Always a hit. Aromas of almonds and hay. Extremely dry on the palate with a very refreshing citrus acidity that balances the wine. It works well with all kind of food. Unbelievable value.

Great with salted peanuts, glorious pairing grilled tuna belly. Oily, salty on the nose with aromas of limestone and lime peel. Delicious. Palate showed balanced and mouthwatering. Lovely aftertaste. Very equilibrated. Dry to the bone. A bottle situated just where I like. If you don't like sherry wines is okay BUT if you love them how can you dislike this one? IMHO Tio Pepe represents the epitome of fino style. Bottled sun. Now indicating prefered date of consume.
Sol embotellado. Ahora indicando la fecha preferida de consumo. Querido Hacedor, ¿para cuándo la de envase?

Value in Champagne? (Todd's): I think I liked this more than the group. What to serve for an opener to a Champagne tasting? This worked. Fino sherries are often a bit difficult at first. Light gold/bronze in color. The nose is oxidized with almonds and dried flowers. On the palate, this is a bit smokey. Bone dry. Slightly medicinal. It begs for food and really improved with some assorted salted nuts. Some blue cheese actually would have been even better. I like this. It is interesting, deep and something to slip at the beginning of the night. More research is required.

I only had one glass on the third day after opening (the rest was drink by Germaine over about a week) but it reminded me how good this drink is; refreshing, bone dry, elegant, very slightly salty and nutty, filling the mouth with an invigorating dry fragrance and showing backbone and good length. Hard to find another wine with such refinement for only c.€9; indeed hard to find at all in France. Very good.

Para usar para la receta de sopa de cebolla francesa, porque hasta ahora no me ha gustado el vino de Jerez seco (aunque no lo he tomado más de tres veces, que yo recuerdo). To be used for a Sherry roasted French onion soup recipe, as so far I don't care for dry Sherry myself (though this is only my third time trying it that I can recall).

I just never seem to find a place for Sherry. I`ve liked some, but often they feel out of place for me. This felt a bit muted(off bottle?) Weak aromas: some saltyness, oak, citrus notes. Medium bodied, a bit warming, tangy, quite mineral. A bit short.

Tandem Sherry Fino tasting: Bottled 03.09.2015 (Tasted in tandem with Lustau Almecenista Fino del Puerto) Very light straw colour. Nose: Salty, almonds, flor, green olives. "Classical" Tio Pepe nose. Palate: Rounded, quite rich (medium+) body, salty, green olives, lemony fruit. Medium long and salty aftertaste. Although the standard TP is heavily filtered and mass produced it remains one of the world's best and most reliable wine bargains. At NOK 89 (EUR 9.35) for 1 litre (=EUR 7 per 0.75 bottle) at duty free this is great value for money. Because of its low price I do a bit of experimentation with Tio Pepe (infusions with dried fruits, blending and aging it with different whiskys, aquavits etc) and several of these experiments really bring out and show how much lemon fruitiness there actually is in this wine. I'm aware that the very good Tio Pepe En Rama (unfiltered) version is based on a stricter selection (from the best casks) but just imagine what we might have had if Gonzales Byass would continue the ordinary Tio Pepe only with less filtering...

I like that this fino clearly displays its bottling date (15th November 2015 in this case), so that I know it is only a few weeks between that and me drinking it. The freshness shines thru, with a tangy yeasty nose, and a lovely bone dry quality with citrus zest, almonds, then a long finish.

Sherry-Tasting, Wine 1: This sherry was pale straw-yellow in colour and offered a fresh and expressive nose of citrus, apple, almond, nuts, coconut, chamomile and salty ocean breeze. On the palate the sherry tasted salty, with citrus, dried apple, almond, nut and chamomile flavours, and with fresh, lively, medium-level acidity and good to very good length. A lean, balanced Fino with solid complexity.

I haven't had sherry since my youth - a very long time ago - and I remember that I liked it, so, seeing a bottle in Jumbo (it's very hard to find any kind of sherry in Portugal, let alone dry - I snapped it up. Pretty much like I remember - dry, somewhat bitter - a unique taste.

Bright and clear, complex savoury nose of yeast, bread dough, mushroom, almonds, soy sauce and stewed apple. Palate flavours mirror the nose with an overwhelming savoury character. Low acidity, very dry, medium plus body, good intensity. A fantastic complement to steamed mussels or other lightly prepared shellfish. Beyond food, a lovely, savoury wine and a good example of the type.

(Bottled 18.11.2014) Nose: Chalk, yeast, baked bread, oily, touch of nuts. Touch of iodine and a slight salty tang, somewhere between light olive brine and a very distant sea breeze. Taste & palate: Totally dry, medium to light body, appetising, medium acidity, slightly oily, medium to long aftertaste and again this light touch of olive brine. Initially (and when tasted alone, as an aperitif) appearing to be light bodied, although tasting and re-tasting, not to mention adding salty or dried foods, tend to expose that it a rather full-bodied and intense taste. Yes, there are sharper, fuller, fresher and richer finos out there (in particular "en ramas") but standard Tio Pepe again confirms that it is, by miles, the world's best, globally and universally available low price wine. Serve Tio Pepe with cured ham or good olives, lean back and enjoy! One week after opening (kept refrigerated in full, smaller bottle) the wine is still fresh but has taken on additional notes of almond, both on the nose and in the mouth.

Must have been 10 years since previous drop from this brand. Remebered it as dead dry and with a pronounced nutty character.
Today's impression was from a newly opened half btl that didn't impress. More like a fruity and young natural wine with some small oomph. Ok length, fine intensity, ok typicity and with some length. But we accept only better Sherry :-)

Within few months of just getting into wine many years ago, an experienced wine drinker recommended this, and I tried it. I thought it was gross. I just didn't get it back then. Now, I get it. I love it, but I'd be cautious to recommend this because it may not be for everyone. It is wonderfully salty, beautifully balanced, light yet full of nutty, oily, and exotic flavors. It's at least 91 point experience for me, especially at $14.

Radiant pale white gold, green tinge; wonderfully fresh nose, classic aromatic profile of green apple, white almond, field flowers and brine; on the palate relatively full-bodied and not as precise and delineated as a Fino can be or perhaps should be ideally, just a bit soft and easy, but it manages to be both dry and approachable, with quite intense flavours of green olive and brine; very good length. Everything you could hope for from a commercial Fino.
Floral, dried apple core nose. Delicate yet good intensity; light, delicate palate. Lemon hints and apple. Classic fino. Refreshing - a really nice aperitif style and has good sustain. Benchmark.

The nose is stunted with oxidation, but is rounded by almond aromas, citrus notes, hints of yeast, and hay. The mouth is as bone dry as it can get, the flor and palomino grapes play a symphony of oily texture, zesty flavors, and toast. The finish is long, with gobs of butterscotch and honey that linger long on the palate and a hint of salt.
Clearly the age on this wine has stunted its true value, that being the lovely tartness, saline style, and rich citrus and summer fruit that come with a fresh and young bottle of Sherry fino. This one being some 4 years old has stayed surprisingly spry for its age, but one that cannot hide from the effect of father time.

Classic. There's a reason it's the benchmark. Make sure it's fresh, and it won't disappoint. It won't steal the show either, but what it lacks in showiness, it makes up for in reliability. Pale, light, medium intensity, a hint of brine and nut, a bit more pear and soft lemon. Solid.

Appearance: Bright and clear, medium (-) intensity lemon colour, with legs and wide watery rims Nose: Clean, medium intensity and fully developed aromas of yeast, nut, green olive, toast, seaweed, savory and salty. Palate: Dry, with medium (-) acidity and fortified to low alcohol, medium (-) body with medium intensity flavors of sherry, toast, olive, nut, savory and salty. Medium (-) length. Conclusion: Acceptable quality fino sherry with simple character and not particular intense nose and palate, and a relatively short length making this wine very elementary and not worth particular attention. Ready to drink now but not intend for ageing.

I tasted this after dinner on 10/1/11. It had a powerful, yet balanced bouquet of salty air, mineral, roasted nuts and orange aromas. The palate was smooth, dry and tangy with flavors of brine, roasted nuts, lemon, lime and green olives…very nice!

Expressive nose with orange-like citrus character, spices, maccadamia and flor notes. Dry, medium bodied and sligthly oily palate with pretty soft acidity, some warmth and salty feel. Rather long nutty finish. A brand that delivers.

A good quality Fino Sherry aged in their solera system for over 4 years. This is the quintessential Fino style. I don't usually drink this as is but it is a very good base for making Fino Sherry cocktails. Found the bottle at BevMo for $16 US retail.

OK, this was bought two years ago, kept in cool storage throughout, and is at least as good as when it was purchased. Tangy and very aromatic on the nose with loads of crushed stone and lightly roasted almond aromas. Full bodied, silky and intense on the palate. 91+

An astonishing value at under 10 Euros. Appetising salty aroma, concentrated fresh core of tightly-wound, yeasty fruit, long finish. Knocks almost any white table wine at this price level right out of the ring, and bears its 15% alcohol with grace and delicacy, which is more than I can say for a supposedly seminal Chilean Chardonnay I had the other day. (Puffed by its "discoverer" at the once-august Wine Society in Stevenage as his "discovery of the year", the Chardonnay cost more than twice as much as this delicious Tio Pepe, had 14,5% alcohol and tasted... like the beached whale it was). 91P

Unfortunately it was served a bit too warm but a good choice for different sausages, ham, cheeses and fruit. A good tapas drink!
The nose shows apples, yeast, almond, alcohol and some sweeter dates and raisins.
It's a dry wine with quite much fruit that suits tapas very well. I'm not overwhelmed by this drink but I could buy it again for the right food. 82-83 p.

Fare Thee Well, Lounge (My House): Nutty, yeasty, dry as the Sahara and great with the soup, which brought out an almost waxy texture, as noted by Kenneth. Finishes incredibly long, which keeps driving you back between the soup and wine. A real steal at under $15.

Pale yellow in colour. What a surprising nose. It starts off with a whiff of apple cider (!) and then underneath that a strong odour of flor comes through to finish off on hazelnuts. The palate is as interesting with an initial attack of lemon rind, followed by flor and hazelnuts. I also get a touch of radish that quite interesting. Overall it is a bit light, but a refreshing drink, nonetheless.

This sherry looks somewhat gold or straw colored in the glass. It has aromas of raw almonds, very raw apple and even a bit of pecan- rum coming through. It tastes a bit like lemon peel, burnt rubber and somewhat of a grassy component mixed with a rum alcoholic taste with a twinge of butterscotch. It is very dry and bitter. THis is not my style of wine but I can see why some people might like this with seafood. I have been to Southern Spain and I know they drink this a lot with seafood, cheeses and tapas.

Tio Pepe is a clear and bright straw colour. It’s best served straight out of the fridge so expect plenty of condensation on the glass. It has a fresh aroma with a teeny hint of saltiness, some almond and citrus, and a good wallop of yeastiness. It’s slightly oxidised in a good way, after all, it is sherry.
It’s very dry, balanced perfectly by its crisp acidity. The flavour of nuttiness carries through with a slightly more dried fruit taste and some green apple.
The flavour goes on forever, you’ll have another sip before it dies off. At 15% it’s no stronger that many Australian or Californian table wines, despite fortification, so you can have a second glass without falling asleep. Do serve it in a wine glass for full enjoyment.
Tio Pepe is great value. It should be far more expensive given the quality and minimum 5 years aging, but you can pick it up for £10 at Oddbins, or £8 at Tesco.
Enjoy your Tio Pepe as an aperitif, it’s perfect with tapas (duh!) and divine with smoked fish or fresh grilled shrimp. Keep it in the fridge and it will last up to a week, but no longer, it will start to fade. That said, you’ll want to drink it quicker than that.

This all started when I came across a book by Andrew Jefford in a second hand bookshop – “101 things you need to know about wine”. Having been much impressed by “The New France”, I bought it. In the book he has a section on sherry, about which he says: “Of all the world’s great wines, it is the most neglected and overlooked – and the least expensive.” I haven’t had sherry for about two decades. I have memories of aged relatives who would open a bottle for a glass at Christmas and then offer it to guests for the next year or two until the bottle was empty. They are not good memories. He goes on to say this: “Repeated experiment has satisfied me that no wine on earth makes a better all purpose food match than chilled sherry.”
Big claims. Time for an experiment.
I go over to Oddbins and ask for a bottle of their most expensive fino sherry – this turns out to be Tio Pepe extra dry Palomino Fino, at £9.99 a bottle. Next I walk down to Hi Sushi, and buy a selection. (If I am going to give it a food test, it might as well be a difficult one.)
TN: Straight from the fridge. (I don’t normally drink wine this cold, but Andrew Jefford is insistent.) The nose is full and heady, and I can only describe it as fresh baked rolls coupled with a briny note that reminds me of the sea. It is very dry and long. It is light bodied and delicate. It is razor sharp although it does not seem to me to be acidic. There is a pungency to it and a bitter-sweet note in the background. I can’t recall tasting anything as complex that cost lest than a tenner. vg (I found this a tricky note to write. The wine is so different you need another vocabulary – the usual toolkit does not seem to work.)
With the sushi it was a revelation. Salmon, prawn, tuna, soy sauce, ginger; it went beautifully with everything. Even with the wasabi – that notorious wine killer – it just took it in its stride. I will continue to experiment: it will definitely be a wine of choice with sushi for me, and I am looking forward to trying it with Chinese and other hard to match oriental food.

Very good.

Tasting Training for WSET Level 4, Units D4 + D5 - Session 4 (Dry Sherry, non-blind): Wine 1: Bottled 05/03/2021. The wine has a pale lemon colour. The nose is of medium(-) intensity and shows aromas of acetaldehyde (apple skin, chamomile, hey) as well as nuts and almond.

Pale gold/straw colour.
Nose: Green apples, hay, nuts (mainly almonds), fresh sea water, green olive brine, chamomile flowers, a little yeast. (89p)
Taste: The arrival is nutty and flowery (mainly chamomile), then come salinity, olive brine, citrus (mainly lemon). These flavours stay the course all through the exit and into the aftertaste, with lemon taking the lead. Long aftertaste. Quite full bodied. Somehow manages to be bone dry without seeming dry, very refreshingly acidic without seeming acidic (91p)
I think this is the most structured Tio Pepe I’ve had to date, again confirming this wine as the world’s best generally available value-for-money wine purchase.

Tandem Sherry Fino tasting: Bottled 03.09.2015
(Tasted in tandem with Lustau Almecenista Fino del Puerto)
Very light straw colour.

(Bottled 18.11.2014)
Nose: Chalk, yeast, baked bread, oily, touch of nuts.

A longer article on this wine and other vintages, lots, can be found at my blog: http://kosherwinemusings.com/2012/06/28/tio-pepe-kosher-sherry-fino-flor-ed-by-its-possibility/

Pale yellow in colour. What a surprising nose. It starts off with a whiff of apple cider (!) and then underneath that a strong odour of flor comes through to finish off on hazelnuts.

In the book he has a section on sherry, about which he says:
“Of all the world’s great wines, it is the most neglected and overlooked – and the least expensive.”
I haven’t had sherry for about two decades. I have memories of aged relatives who would open a bottle for a glass at Christmas and then offer it to guests for the next year or two until the bottle was empty. They are not good memories.
He goes on to say this:
“Repeated experiment has satisfied me that no wine on earth makes a better all purpose food match than chilled sherry.”
(I don’t normally drink wine this cold, but Andrew Jefford is insistent.)
The nose is full and heady, and I can only describe it as fresh baked rolls coupled with a briny note that reminds me of the sea. It is very dry and long. It is light bodied and delicate. It is razor sharp although it does not seem to me to be acidic. There is a pungency to it and a bitter-sweet note in the background. I can’t recall tasting anything as complex that cost lest than a tenner. vg
(I found this a tricky note to write.
