On opening full bell pepper. Dark color than expected. Could have blindées 5 years younger. With time…mesquite barbecue chips…super full bodied…can see this going 15 plus more years and probably improves a little bit

Ruby, with a hint of bricking on the rim. Delicate perfumed nose; open blackcurrant/cassis with a bit of rose/florality. Searing acidity which is perhaps not a surprise; tannins are very well integrated but make their presence felt slightly on the finish. Fruit perhaps tends towards red. No pencil lead for me but certainly tertiary notes of cigar/leather starting to arrive. All in all it's a tiny bit mean; nose is incredible, though.
A pity the restaurant didn’t have the proper vessel for this wine. Smooth and layered with blackcurrant charred oak hint of warm spice, balanced with no edges, rich but not overwhelming.

Moving to the herbal, mint, and spearmint side, with plenty of leafy tobacco and bright red fruits. The fruits and crisp and fresh, but lack the power, and depth found in the better vintages. Drink from 2023-2035.

Followed for 48 hours. Day 1, red fruit aromatics after 30 minutes of coaxing but finish dominated by chewy, astringent tannins. Day 2, the nose and palate were dominated by oak. Tannin had softened a bit but finish was still a bit bitter. At 48 hours, similar notes. Held up perfectly but the oak was omnipresent. Not sure what this will be when the oak finally integrates.
CV1. Dark red, slim edge just beginning to show some maturity, 5.5. Classic L. Las Cases velvet glove in an iron fist, pencil, restrained, cool, dark fruits behind. Harmonious palate, h-T, mB, m+A, fruit is there but still somewhat hidden behind the huge structure (for a 22 year’s old Bdx), long elegant finish. Wait at least five years and will hold for decades.
Enjoyed the rest of the bottle after a 3h decant. The wine stayed pretty much at the same level for several hours so this is a long runner.

For the first hour or so, this is simply dominated by its new oak. After that, the fruit character does emerge with appraling raspberry, cedar, and nutmeg, and saddle leather. Medium bodied, perhaps with a slight dearth of acidity to match its body and tannin. Though reasonably good, but I can’t help but wonder whether this will still be vital when the oak has finally integrated.
Purple red color, no signs of ageing. With a little air it starts with fresh notes of plum, cassis, flowers. Very young! Good structure on the palate, cassis. Built for decades, not nearly at its peak! 93 pts for now, certainly more in a few years

I've had very few LLCs but am aware of the "do not touch for 30 years+" warnings...however the reports suggest that 2001 is ready to roll. I didn't see it that way after a 3 hour decant. Perfectly pleasant left bank characteristics but none of the "wow" factor that the more exuberant critics give it. This was an ex-chateau bottle so the provenance is impeccable, but it seems to be hiding something away that won't reveal itself for another few years yet. I hope.

Nose -Cherry, raspberry, boysenberry Mouth - tutti Fruitti, more on the fresh red side, This wine has a lovely allure, somewhat reminiscent of a beaujolais, albeit with more structure. for a 20+ year old wine to taste this fresh is remarkable. and to boot, I suspect it’s still showing somewhat primary. Bold fruited yet very clean. A true “claret” and what the region is famous for. Hold.
Day#2 even finer than last night, I can sense the pedigree of the wine. The fruit is lovely and complex, the tannins fine, the acidity keeps it all fresh. No tertiary flavors yet but this is how I like it. I tend to find LLC unready to drink regardless of how long it’s been aged but clearly not the case here. Recent direct chateau release FWIW. One of the better Bordeaux I’ve had in a while.

Deep purple-black. Dark-fruited nose with some star anise, creosote, truffle, graphite and tobacco emerging after an hour decant. Full-bodied with good lift and sense of harmony. Finishing dry with some tannins yet to be resolved. Quite structured. Showed young and will likely improve with further cellaring.

3rd of 12, opened 90 minutes then decanted an hour, perfect cork and level, just entering early drinking window, much less plush than attractive LP on same night, but more classic, complex and persistent with excellent balance and lift of 01 and more to it than lovely if slightly dumb LB, significant upside, 25+ years. Quite full and rich for an '01 with a bit of oak still to resolve. Slightly clunky compared to the older vintages but this is one '01 that needs more time. 92+

St Julien Dinner at Nice Matin (New York, NY): This came across as very young next to the 1989 and 1990 Poyferre and 90 LLC. Brambly cassis, very fruit forward. Somewhat closed and tight despite decanting. Will likely improve with a few more years in bottle

Decanted NY Eve and drank about 1/2. Went dry for a few days and drank the rest 3 nights later after it was corked in fridge the whole time. Wine never really blossomed with full sweetness and definitely a tad green/lean after 3 nights. Perfectly nice wine and especially at the price I paid.

Dinner out in Jersey with some friends: A favorite I think among the group as this was the first bottle to finish. Good medium aged Bordeaux. In general I've tried to keep pre-2000 as a rule of thumb, but actually this was in a nice spot right now. A touch young, but it's developed the complexity and isn't quite as tight as a very young wine would be. Nice to try.

Slow oxed for a couple hours (no decant). This did evolve in the glass a fair amount. Served blind, my first thought was 2000 left bank bordeaux. It had cool cassis fruit, a faint bit of pencil lead and old leather, but there was this candied red cherry note and certain richness that had me thinking Opus One or Dominus, so I went with 04 Opus. Should have stuck to my guns. It’s a really fine Leoville, less high tone/nail polish than 99, and only slightly less power than a 2000 tasted last year. I do love LLC
Two hour decant and pour. Although 20 years old, this wine seems hardly in a mature phase at this point. Still fresh and vibrant with a lovely nose and layers of flavor. Coulda, woulda, shoulda waited a few years.
Very saturated reddish purple in color. Intense and classic aromas of pencil shavings, cedar, small black fruits and a touch of leather. Very youngish and structured in the mouth that shows swath of sweet and savory black fruits, grippy tannins, medium acidity and a very long perfumed finish. This is still evolving.

Pop and pour, but 2 hrs slow ox before drinking. I adore 01 BDX..I enjoy it more than more lauded neighboring vintages. This is fantastic now, but clearly there is plenty of gas in the tank. On the nose: wild strawberry, cocoa powder, pencil.shavings, soft cherry liqueur, forest floor, and a hint of red earth. On the palate: excellent acidity, good density, if a touch lighter than I expect from LLC, but so energetic, with plum, black fruit, dried savory herbs, and finely grained tannin on the close. Lovely.

Return to Trompette (La Trompette): This is only just getting going. Entirely in the mould of LLC, with pencil shavings, cocoa, a little bit of oak and a lot of weight. Dark and dense, although the inherent freshness of Cabernet prevented the wine from seeming at all heavy, and the tannins steadied the ship rather than intruded. Excellent foil for the food.

I really like this style as it off great LLC character in a forward style. Tobacco, mocha, blackberries, cassis, cigar wrapper and wet forest aromas open the nos. Medium/full-bodied, regal, yet elegant, soft, and structured, the wine is juicy, fresh, vibrant and leaves you with a refined version of classic Bordeaux. This is drinking just great today. There is a beautiful sweetness and lift in the finish. This is a better version of the 1985. The wine blends 69% Cabernet Sauvignon 19% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc. 13% ABV,

Day later from memory. Well, it finally happened, my first post-vaccination indoor get-together with my long-time neighbor and drinking buddy Jim. As usual, he showed no restraint in the quality of what he poured and gave it to me blind. It was my first blind tasting attempt in over a year.
I guess you could say I was rusty or even the threat of anosmia still lurking in the air was enough to knock me off my game but I'm too embarrassed to even say what I guessed it was.
Fortunately, the reveal has an uncanny way of snapping your senses back into focus. I was impressed by the sleek and youthful profile of this 20-year-old wine. Honestly, I found no overt signs of age. It was compact, polished but not glossy, and self-assured. Cool aromas and flavors of red fruit, graphite, a little tobacco caressed the palate held by firm but at this stage gentle tannic structure. That's what can happen with classic claret stored perfectly. 84 users say enjoy between 2013 and 2028. I beg to differ and see this sailing proudly to 2035 and beyond...not that I'll ever encounter it again.

2001 Leoville Las Cases 91. Dusty gravel clay and forest floor on the nose, mid palette dry dark fruit, medium-weight, dry but smooth finish. 91. I wouldn't say this was corked but it seemed a little off.
2001 Beringer Reserve 94. Tertiary notes of black berry fruit, dried flowers, aromatic bouquet. The palate is well refined great finish, holding up well.

Quite delicous. Bottle breathed for 6 hours followed by 2 hours decant. Still quite young with black currant, a bit of wood, cedar. Quite tpical st julien style. Getting into its secondary stage. Very good right now but don’t think it will get any better. While 2001 is a good vintage but it’s lack of the depth and complexity of those exceptional vintage such as 2000. Good quality still for this price!

So I was a little surprised when this wine appeared at the table. There's a general consensus among our group that 2001 Bordeaux is an incredible, and underappreciated, vintage. I expected the Las Cases to be big and bold even at this age, but it wasn't.
What I did get was a seemingly resolved, delicious, elegant, somewhat old school Left Bank. The flavors are becoming secondary, tannins seem to be about done, and there's definitely some of that graphite and leather you expect from the best of Bordeaux.
This wine may have peaked, but it could, possibly, be in a dumb phase. I'd say drink up, but Las Cases almost always proves incredibly durable. Cellar kept since purchase.

Black fruits, cedar, lead pencil, some green bell pepper, some earth, mushrooms, touch of barnyard. To be completely honest we expected a bit more, but nevertheless this is a beautiful and luxurious Bordeaux which is in the midst of its maturity stage and a great pleasure now.

Give it some time to come alive. This accidentally had perfect timing. Decanted this 3 hours before dinner (no sediment to speak of). Right at 3 hours it was very reticent, but right as we started to eat, it started to come alive. This is well balanced, red fruit, leather, earth, some mineral flavors, hints of tea. The finish lingers. It is as good by itself as with food. It just requires patience.
Beautiful!

Consumed for a "Virtual Tasting" with friends, theme of something Leoville with some age. While not obviously flawed, and not bad wine, this was really a very disappointing bottle, evincing no character and no real pleasure. It got /slightly/ better on evening two and three, but it was four days before I even finished the bottle because it just had no charm at all. Pity.

Pretty lean, allowing more of its makeup to show rather than its fruit. Definitely cedar and red fruit dominated with very good structure. I would let these age about another 5 to 7 years...In light of the surprises of the vintage, somewhat of a disappointment for a 2001 left bank wine. drink or Hold

Surprised how young this came across for an 01'. Full bodied and packed with dark fruit, not quite as elegant as other 01', though delicious now and expressing some secondary layers. Perfectly drinkable now depending on much age you like on your Bordeaux. I've heard this compared to the 00'.

Bordeaux night (Indianapolis, IN): A great showing. In that zone where the black fruit is still very youthful and rich, but showing plenty of savoury development around it with lots of earth, spice, tobacco, and just a whiff of leather. Still a bit of fine grained tannin on the back end, but drinking quite nicely now.

Followed over 2 nights. Seemingly in early maturity with fine tannins with a stately profile. Classic bdx profile with black fruits, cassis, leader and cedar spice notes. Nice aromatics, though the palate and finish were a bit “four square”. Could still use a little more time but approachable now.

Tasted over two nights, this is surprisingly youthful for a wine more than 15 years old. First taste was with an hour open, and it was still rather monolithic. It took another hour of air for things to unfold, and then the wine showed as a textbook, classic classified growth, left bank wine. Dark cassis and blackberry fruit, hints of cedar and pencil shavings, and subtle herb tones were framed by substantial, yet balanced tannins. On night two it showed nearly exactly as on night one, allowing for the slight degree of oxidation from the extra 24 hours. A few hours in a decanter make this a very pleasurable wine to drink now, but five or more years make sense. Classy stuff that fits what I look for in Bordeaux.

From memory: Very fragrant and classy right out of the gates, showing generous dark berry fruit, spice and earthy tones. The fragrance continues on throughout the palate, where the medium-framed body is backed by moderate tannins that expanded their reach over a couple hours. With air this revealed notes of cedar and subtle graphite. Despite being 17 years post-vintage, this still showed youthful, with no sign of bricking or slowing down. I’d give this a minimum of five more years before approaching. Quintessential St. Julien.
Excellent

Primary with lots of fruit, structure and potential. Young and expressive. Blackcurrants, blueberries, cedar, leather, lead pencil and eucalyptus on the nose. Rough tannins, great acidity, big mouthfeel. Great wine, but a little tight at this stage. The potential is undisputable, but after this bottle I would say "Wait ten more years!". A wine that will give a lot of pleasure in the future.

1st of 12 (+6 mags), decanted an hour, perfect cork and level - darkish ruby, purple rim, young; primary cassis, hint of graphite and cedar, very slightly green, classy if not as yet particularly complex; medium, long, decent balance, not particularly assertive, persistent or concentrated, LLC class though, backward and needs time. Should be at least F+ (18)........opened on strength of reviews below and wish I'd followed my instincts and held on for a couple of years as LLC usually is behind others in starting to show well. simply baffled by anyone who thinks a wine so young is past its prime, even allowing for storage variation. Such elegance and power at the same time! A beautiful and intense complex perfumed aroma meets the nose: blackcurrants, black cherries, earth, leather, cassis, tobacco leaf and lead pencil. The tannins are already fully integrated and mature, nice acidity, nuanced, with a long beatiful finish. This wine is on the soft an elegant side, already giving a lot of pleasure. But this wine will probably improve over the next decade and it will last another 20 years. I will save my remaining bottle. Big wine as always from this address, and good value from a somewhat underrated vintage.

Bordeaux dinner at Ripple with live rendition of the Star Spangled Banner (Ripple Restaurant in DC): It is hard not to like the 01 vintage in France. Just like the 01 Burgundy, it is a nose driven vintage that is drinking well in a very youthful way. Expressive and detailed nose displaying cool blue fruit, blueberry, cassis, cabernet perfume, rose, milk/lactic which I typically get in LLC, lead pencil and mineral. Very good concentration, cool blue fruit driven palate impression, very precise and polished, bright acidity, sweet tannins and a long cassis driven finish. It is reaching the youthful peak but no need to hurry. Perhaps another decade to reach the perfect maturity.

Fit for a wine loving Groundhog: Bordeaux back to 1970, by way of a 1982 trio (Ripple Restaurant in Washington D.C.): Very pure lead pencil aromatics, a rather scrumptious nose! I recall trying this over 10 years ago after it had been recently released and it came across as somewhat stolid, but now it is entering a pleasing phase that is not yet the optimal drinking window by a long shot, but shows more promise. Full bodied, not yet nuanced, the wine has much grip with tannins smooth enough and refined, with a long finish. Forget about it another five years however!

Deep garnet color with no purple. Classic masculine Leoville nose: cassis and oyster shells - cool and powerful. Serious palate that requires time - nothing obvious. The interest comes with time in the glass and food. The palate is all secondary flavors as almost all of the fruit has integrated. For fans of old school wines. Will last for years. (93+)

Decent enough without ever reaching the heights I would have expected - a brisk acidity on this makes it perfect with food and the wine itself has enough evolution on it now to show of its secondary characteristics - just lacks a bit of depth.

First of the case. Decanted 30 minutes. Better after another 30 minutes. This is dark, ripe, and still fairly primary. This was once a very dense, rather strapping wine for the vintage. Today the colour is still very dark, and the new oak is still quite evident, however the fruit (black fruits, currants) is very dry, seems to be fading.
A stern wine. Lacks charm.
Bit disappointed.

Great nose - nearly perfect for this type of wine. But the palate is not quite at that level. The wine is presently tight. It has quite a bit of tannin and shows a ton of graphite. There is wonderful tart blackberry fruit, but the wine closes in once it is in the mouth. There is a hint of bitterness on the tannins. This will be very, very good but could use 10 years.

Was planned as the month's highlight, but this btl made a face plant. Hope it isn't representative for this wine.
Nose took a while to open up. Not worth the wait: Bdx earth, crayons, chalk, black olives gone slightly bad and a small dose of Brett. In the mouth, there is no balance: acids take over completely and even if there are several very fine aromas, there is something missing here.
Far from worth the money. After my case of 2008, I've stopped buying LLC. Even if I usually love their restrained aristocratic stiff upper lips. Not scoring this one, but if I did, it would be somewhere around 81. Wife refused to drink more than small sip: "bacterial cheese" she said. I gave up after one glass. Became wine-ice-cubes for cooking instead.

A classic medoc blend. Opened up after 1.5 hours. Earthy, black fruit, cassis, graphite. Complex nose. Silky texture. Not super-concentrated, but still potent. Drinkable now and probably still improving. Really enjoyed it with duck confit.
Decanted for 1.5 hours before drinking. Color is medium ruby with a light ruby/garnet rim in the glass. Bouquet is complex and continues to evolve with time, showing blackberry, cassis, leather and forest floor. The palate brings delicate red cherry, damp earth, along with more leather and cassis. Acidity is still relatively high but well integrated with the light, fine tannins. Long, lingering finish rounds out the wine. Quite delicious, although not showing some of the typical Bordeaux characteristics I'd expect. Upon opening I initially worried it might be past prime, but after decanting it improved significantly. Drinking well now, but can likely continue to be enjoyed for some time.

Pungent nose of dark fruit, leather and tobacco. Dense and chewy on the palate. More dark fruit and tobacco on the palate. Softer in the mouth than the nose would suggest. Slight bitterness on the medium finish. Nice, but will benefit from a few years of age.

Wine of the 2001 Vintage at Matt B's House (New Canaan, CT): This was the tightest and youngest wine tonight and frankly too young for us to fully enjoy. Peter thought it needed extreme aeration so we took a page from Myhrvold's book and blendered it for sixty seconds, which helped somewhat.
Underneath the wall of fine tannins there was some nice gravel-like minerality, a bit of barnyard funk, lilac floral, and loads of slightly underripe dark berries. A big wine that needs at least five years for its charms to be revealed.
This received one third place vote.

With some air the it gave tones of ripe berries, bay leaf, charcoal and cigar box. On the palate medium bodied and complex. Young in some aspects, and matured in other (autumn leaves).

Leoville Las Cases 2004 > 1982, with Michael Schuster (Bordeaux Index, London): Quite a dark coloured wine. Light and elegant on the nose, light oaky notes, cherries, dark fruits more classic cabernet nose. On the palate it is on the mascular side, firmer, with good density and balance, light sweet fruit and quite a bit firm tannin. light herby notes. On the young side but still a pretty good wine. Wait 5 years. 92 for the moment, this can easily develop into a good 95 if it evolves like we think it will.

Dinner with wine+art (Kiki's Bistro, Chicago): Deep color. Similar to the '99, shows a lovely mix of red and black fruit aromas, along with notes of violets and florals and old leather. Medium+ tannins, shows some power; black fruit and spice qualities, hint of earth. 92+ pts.

Was quite expressive when opened and poured, became a little more reserved after that though. Nose has some green tobacco and light wispy smoke. Palate is small wild blackberries, smokiness comes through later on the palate and lingers for a shy but lengthy finish. Very nice and pleased there's plenty more to come.

Hard to rate... Very drinkable, smooth and a nice lasting finish but somehow my wife and I found the wine very muted... Never really opened up until the last glass. Maybe the wine is entering a "quiet" phase. If you own some, maybe wait for a year or 2. Hopefully some additional complexity by then.

From an assemblage of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19.5% Merlot and 9.5 Cabernet Franc, this classic St. Julien wine is already approachable. Fresh earth, black cherry, cassis, smoke, stone, tobacco leaf and lead pencil scents produce a complex perfume. Soft in texture, but not showing the levels of concentration found in more exalted vintages, at ten years of age, the wine is starting to offer pleasure. Give it 3-4 more years and it should deliver additional complexity.

Bordeaux Tasting Highlights at Levain (Levain, Mpls): Very dark red/purple. This was still pretty tight, but the pedigree shows, deep concentrated fruit with oak and tannins that dominate now. This will need more time or a significant decant. Impression is 92-93+ with time.

Beautiful complex nose and flavors. Bright cherry and heat on the nose, big sour cherry, earth, cassis, and coffee grounds on the palate. This has lots and lots of life left but is drinking ok. Nice clean vegetal/bell pepper on the finish. I reallly enjoyed this bottle. Decanted almost 3 hours/

drank this with grilled lamb chops after drinking a 2000 Beau-Sejour Becot. The 2001 Leoville Las Cases really outdid the 2000 St Emillion. The nose had more classic cedar, tobacco box. The body had more fruit and the finish in particular really outshone the 2000 BSB. Could easily go another 5 years but its def drinking nicely now and paired great with the lamb. Not the best bordeaux ever, but a great St. Julien in a solid vintage.

Decanted for three hours, utilizing a funnel. An ominously dark garnet and a slight ruby rim. I'm reminded why this - along with the '01 Lafite - is my favorite of the Left Bank for this vintage. Melted black licorice, plumeria, blackberry, red licorice and tobacco. A lot of floral, musk and berry on the long and soft palate, with tannins in the same vein. Sublime concentration and a freshness that can only come from Bordeaux. This Las Cases reminds me of an amalgamated '81 and '86. Decanting for at least two hours is a must or wait. A remarkable Claret that will have at least a 25 year drinking window. Drink 2013 - 2040.

Decented for about 90 minutes prior to drinking. This wine is still very young and muted although very drinkable now. Very smooth with a very long finish. Start with some spicyness and ends up with layers of vanilla, berries and fig. Lots of promise in this one and will let my other bottles mature for a few more years.

Splash decanted for approx. 2 hrs. Deep ruby red in color. Huge, luscious and layered aromas of dark red fruits, vanilla, fig and a supporting layer of tobacco. Gorgeous, succulent full-bodied mouth feel with the dark fruit and vanilla carrying through with excellent balance and structure. Long finish. A wow wine and better than average showing for the consistently excellent LLC. Classic. In its' very early window, this has a long life ahead and a few more years should benefit the complexity of the wine. Superb! Paired beautifully with a salad of duck and prochetta.

Bordeaux night in San Antonio (Home of David B.): Decanted 2hrs, returned to bottle and served about 4 more hours later. Through the decant process was very closed and difficult to gauge. Opened up some with a shy nose of coffee, blackberries and cassis. Has a nice polished palate wih pure red fruits and a little cedar. Very prominent fine drying tannins on the back end clip an otherwise fine finish. This bottle was either not stored well (the other bottle in the purchase showed worse) or this wine is just incredibly closed at this time. Given no obvious flaws and the showing of good fruit underneath the tannins, would lean toward the later. Good pedigree and potential, but hard to guess where this wine will end up. Definitely hold for now. NS.

Flannery Steak Trial Run (The Lew Residence): Decanted 6hrs prior to drinking. Overall, a very disappointing showing as it never opened up. Nose had a little coffee and toast with a little cassis. Palate was refined and focused, of obvious pedigree, but fruit was hidden beneath layers of fine silky tannins. Short to medium woody finish. No obvious flaws, with perfect cork. Shows promise, but little enjoyment today. On day 2 was certainly more open, with currants, cedar, and mocha on the nose and a little red fruit on the palate. Finish of complex oak flavors. Still nothing that you would expect from a bdx of this estate, just recognizable as bdx. Probably an off bottle. NR but would score in 85-87 range.

Decanted about an hour. Star anise and tar buried in the medium red fruit. Layers of flavor, super long finish. A smooth elegant wine that has a few years to go before reaching its peak. At The Cellar with buffalo tartar, duck two ways, and a beautifully grilled pork chop.

I decanted this one for 2 hours after reading some of the notes about it still being a little early, and I'm glad I did. We drank the bottle over another 2 hour period, and the 2nd glass was considerably more flavorfull than the first, although it was smooth as silk right out of the decanter. On the 2nd glass I'm tasting currant, lavender, turpines, touch of graphite, and the smell is intoxicating. She is noticably leggy as well. This is about 3 hrs 45 min out of the bottle, so I'd say it has a TON of life left, but was very pleasurable, regardless.

Elegant, silky and lighter on its feet than most LLC's, and a little muted on the nose, with floral and cassis aromas, and a little tobacco & dark fruit on the palate. Beautiful cork; decanted for an hour, enjoyed for two. b.dylan's post is on point below. It is between innings, having not the size of its youth nor developed yet into a fully formed maturity. Hold and see what develops from this medium-bodied, well made but slightly reticent 2001 St Julien. It's not in a hurry.

With decanting and time - at least an hour open or in decanter, this wine is delicious now. However, time WILL make this wine better. Thick, full-bodied, dark cherry and cassis, forest, spice, and vanilla merge in this elegant and structured mouthful with a long lingering finish.

Medium garnet. Red fruit, herbs, mint, graphite. Medium body, very sleak, good for food. The wine is almost light in the mouth, very fine and light. Evolved and it will reach full maturity very soon. Not very aromatic, but has fine texture, refreshing acidity long aftertaste and tannins are a little bit astringent. Light wine in a good sense, not overwhelming, I like it a lot.

My second bottle of this amazing wine. More seductive than the first time I tasted it and more mature. The color is still ruby, with gray hues. Layers of ripe red fruits, gentle oaky vanilla, figs, cedar, smoke and minerals. The tannins are still harsh, but doesn't matter. Mushroomy and long finish. A Leoville Las Cases near to perfection. Be patient for the next 10 - 15 years and pair it with liver.

Leoville Las Cases at My House: The nose offers a stern and reserved blend of dark fruit, oak and vanilla with not much in the way of secondary aromas emerging. On the palate this shows good fruit concentration, but sweet oak flavors still dominate the flavors. This is the second time I've had this and I'm a little wary of whether this will deliver into anything noteworthy. Only time will tell.

Tasting Group Dinner - Léoville Las Cases (Dave's House): Very ripe and plummy, especially when tasted next to the '95 and '96. Primal and showing a lot of oak. Some buttered popcorn and lots of sweet dark fruit. This seems to have lots of underlying stuffing and structure, and should be terrific once the baby fat burns off. Revisit in 5+ years.

Tasting Group Dinner w/ Kevin Sidders - Steaks & Bordeaux (Our House): Double decanted about three hours. Very promising, but completely shut down. Stern, brooding, richly concentrated inky fruit and lots of oak. The palate has a promising degree of minerality and finesse, but the fruit is closed down hard and the finish is dominated by a wall of fine, ripe tannin. This has terrific structure and should be delicious in 8-10 years, if not longer. I debated whether I could give this a score and ultimately decided that what was in the glass tonight was a good enough hint of this wine's true character.

Bordeaux at Siggy's: This was decanted a good three hours before serving, but I don't really think it budged this wine. The nose offers a stern and reserved blend of dark fruit, oak and vanilla with not much in the way of secondary aromas emerging. In the mouth, however, this was surprisingly good, packed with tons of deep, concentrated red fruit built onto a richly structured base that belies nobility. Flavors expanded no the palate and were very satisfying until the fierce tannins clamped down near the finish. Fun to try now as a reference, but these need to be cellared for many, many more years.

2001 Bordeaux (Virginia): Part of a 2001 tasting. Big and structured. Quite tannic. Good texture and weight. Dark fruit with underlying earth; a hint of cocoa and spice. There was a slight hollowness in the middle, but I'm not complaining too much here, as it was still quite impressive - though obviously this was not the most flattering age to try this wine...

Zeer Goed. 93+/100.

I hope.

Mouth - tutti Fruitti, more on the fresh red side, This wine has a lovely allure, somewhat reminiscent of a beaujolais, albeit with more structure. for a 20+ year old wine to taste this fresh is remarkable. and to boot, I suspect it’s still showing somewhat primary.

In general I've tried to keep pre-2000 as a rule of thumb, but actually this was in a nice spot right now.

Las Cases vs Beringer Reserve

Right at 3 hours it was very reticent, but right as we started to eat, it started to come alive. This is well balanced, red fruit, leather, earth, some mineral flavors, hints of tea. The finish lingers. It is as good by itself as with food. It just requires patience.

Julien.

In the mouth, there is no balance: acids take over completely and even if there are several very fine aromas, there is something missing here.
Far from worth the money.

Still very youthful. Dull garnet ruby. Gorgeous, classic nose of black current syrup, graphite and oak spice. Perfectly balanced wine that is drinking fine this evening but will only get better with age. Lots of potential - just needs to polish the edges. Will be great in 2025. (94+)

Give it 3-4 more years and it should deliver additional complexity.

drank this with grilled lamb chops after drinking a 2000 Beau-Sejour Becot.

NS.

Beautiful cork; decanted for an hour, enjoyed for two. b.dylan's post is on point below. It is between innings, having not the size of its youth nor developed yet into a fully formed maturity. Mushroomy and long finish.
A Leoville Las Cases near to perfection.
