Tale of two nights. First night the wine still had some primal qualities, red/blue fruit mix and some residue of the original barrel time, but really woven together pretty well. On the second night, the fruit fades and the tertiary flavors take over, so wet leaves come to the forefront. An interesting bottle over two days.

Great Crianza, fully mature. The nose is a bit subdued, showing faint red berry, vanilla, and spice. The pallette shows more, with bright cherry fruit mixed with cranberry and pomegranate. There is some earthy spice folding in as well, but not much else. Good acidity keeps it fresh with tannins integrated and finishing slightly dry. Good stuff, drink now and over the next few years, probably won't get better.

Really enjoyed this. Medium garnet color, with slight amber at the edges. Red fruits on the nose. Medium bodied and layered on the palate -- not dark at all -- cherries, red currants, leather. Good intensity, medium finish. Totally rioja. Thought it was superb for a crianza.

Opaque core with a mix of brick red & violet on the rim. The nose develops a strong anise note with some tobacco & darker fruit. Darker fruit on the entry before showing some leather & savory character through the mid palate. Medium bodied with good intensity. Some tartness on the back of the palate, but enveloped by the darker, more savory nature of this wine. Tannins create a drying finish.
A good entry point for LdH. Nowhere near the heights of the aged Bosconia and Tondonia, but as solid a Crianza as one can find.

Dark red colour for nose with clove, cinnamon, marzipan, cocoa, game, strawberries....what a symphony! For a Crianza range, this young palate shows an interesting bouquet following those fabulous aromas. Any heat? Considering that acid grade, the answer is not. A minor "cru" from a great vintage elaborated by a Big One...Rioja at its best!

Light red with a little bricking with a nose of cherry, cocoa, and leather. The nose has iron and tart cherry. Seems like the fruit is fading some so lots of structure left with a surprising amount of heat.

Subtle nose, pretty, with some earthy notes. Mostly pure red and blue fruits. Nice mouthfeel and great balance between fruit and structure. Tart acid and drying tannin are really nice in the mid-palate and drive the medium/short finish. For $20, I will buy more of this.

Tart, rustic, and I think with a twinge of volatile acidity on this one, which was okay but required some (Cuban) food to tame it a bit. Dried red fruit character. Different and real good, though I'd say my first was better.

I brought this to the blind PN dinner to see if might fool a few people and it did. At least at my table. I'm feeling compelled to spread the word about these old world Rioja producers who offer elegant, layered wines for under $30. This was an '04 Cubillo but I've have another slightly better '98 Heredia vineyard for around the same money that really was amazing. Tradional Rioja rocks if you love medium weight elegance, dusty tanins and minerally spicey red fruit profiles.

Bright cherry pit, tart acidity. Light bodied -- a good crianza. Second time tasted and very consistent with first bottle. Would buy more at $15; probably not at the $25 I paid for this one. Just a bit too simple for the price point, this does not compare favorably to some of the better cru Beuajolais in the market right now. Enjoyable nonetheless.

Picked this up at one of the better local wine shops, about $25/bottle in late 2010. Overall, a very nice wine, medium-bodied with lots of red fruit. The 65% tempranillo gives it the nice rounded, soft flavors, the 25% garnacho is evident in the lighter body and spice notes. We drank this in early February buried in deep snow drifts, but I can see this as a great summer wine with grilled meats, etc. Still quite young after 7 years, I can see this being very drinkable for another 3-5 years. I wold completely disregard the two 79 scores in the rating section, and highly recommend this wine at or around the $25 price point. A very nice, very drinkable rioja for the next 3-5 years.

Orange-red. Bouquet of sweet dried cherry, French vanilla, pipe tobacco, and, um, Bounce dryer fabric-softener sheets. Just a touch oxidative. After about 40 minutes there was a brief spell of very bretty stink; this gave way to earth and oak, with less fruit. Fairly light-bodied, more acid than tannin structure. Elegant earthy cherry on the palate is really quite delicious.

Pale cherry color with some bright orange glints. Very tight nose at first with some cherries and a faint whiff of minerality and mint. After 2 hours opened up with tremendous nose of "Rioja," earthy cherries, liquorice, brown spices, and umami / beef. Nice cutting acidity and some tannins that should mellow with some more time in bottle, outstanding with traditional Spanish food (morcilla, lomo de cerdo adobado and patatas a la importancia). Would probablay had rated higher if the first half of the bottle hadn't been less than stellar. Be sure to open plenty in advance to enjoy more of what this wine has to offer!

13.0% alcohol. Young wine but showing really beautiful grace and structure. Light red cherry color, with a pretty nose of bright red fruits, earth, and minerals. In the mouth, intensely focused and very pure, with the fruit and earth notes singing out beautifully in solo and then harmonizing into a complete, delicious wine. The finish should round out with a bit more age, but this is an excellent, quite refreshing red wine that delivers good value. A-

Deep ruby/crimson in the glass. Nose presents initially with vanilla, spice, leather, and dark fruits. With air, notes of earth and cumin/cardamom come through in a really interesting way. Poised nose of deep red fruits, smoke, and a sweet earthiness, quite nice. This is my first Heredia, and the description of them having a burgundian sensibility is absolutely right on. Really great balance and flavor profile with a mouthfeel that is well matched. Restrained but not austere, with plenty of brambly plum tasting perfectly ripe and earthy undertones wrapped around a spine of finely grained but noticeable tannins that form a really pleasant core.
Without specific experience with this wine, I can only imagine this should age gracefully for the next 5-8 years or so, not really sure what it would do past then? That being said this is great now, and in my mind a screaming value.

Red with orange shading. Nose of cherry, licorice and earth. Smooth and earthy pie cherry flavor. This wine is lean and flavorful at the same time. Long tart finish. Great with our grilled lamb chops. We tasted this next to the 2004 Sierra Cantabria Rioja Crianza that we opened last night. The most noticeable difference for both of us is the relative austerity of the Heredia. I like that but my wife prefers the somewhat fuller fruit in the Sierra Cantabria.

Showing a lot of oxidation on the nose; classic LdH aromas here. Mossy dirt on the fairly open, not hugely dense nose; a hint of band aid too. Quite nice nose. On the palate, very solid for its price range, showing a lot of the Lopez style - the dirt, the moss, tobacco, a tiny hint of brett. Very complex for a wine at this price level. 89+ Just a bit tart on the palate, without a lot of generous fruit, keeping this from being outstanding.

My first Lopez Heredia, and was impressed with the authenticity and honesty of the wine, while also surprised by how full-bodied and fruit-forward it was (was expecting something more austere and perhaps thin). Nose was prominent enough but not trying too hard, with true aromas of cherry, leather, spice, and mushroom. Flavors of cherry and spice complement an ample, earthy mouthfeel on a lean frame.

Without specific experience with this wine, I can only imagine this should age gracefully for the next 5-8 years or so, not really sure what it would do past then? That being said this is great now, and in my mind a screaming value.

Restrained nose gives way to dark red fruits, and meaty, then iron (not quite rust) nose. Fresh acidity and agreeable palate. Appetizing Rioja.
