Double-decanted and left for an hour. Aromas and flavours were past-its-peak older Rhone. Decent concentration and energy, just not that interesting flavourwise. 11th of 12.

PnP last night. TN from today. Med ruby at the core, fading to a med tawny rim. Nose is med+ intensity with a lot of spiciness, with raisined plums, wet dirt, and a citrus rind in the upper register. The palate shows a slight frizzante, that seems to have improved since yesterday. Full bodied wine, 14% abv, with med+ intensity, rustic and edgy tannins that are right at home with a plate of food. There is nice med acidity, with ripe blue and red fruit, black pepper, tar, and a rocky minerality. The finish is med length and repeats the flavors from the palate. The rustic tannins persist for 30 secs or so. Nice astringency. Very tasty Coudoulet, drinking beautifully now, and will continue to drink well through 2020+, but I'll enjoy mine within a year or 2. Very good.

My first encounter with this wine in a while: initially had a case but this is the third-last bottle. I don't seem to have any previous tasting notes. Not decanted. Still quite a youthful appearance (dark; glossy; no bricking). Some earthy/mushroomy funk on the nose at first, but this blows off after a few minutes in the glass. It is replaced by dark fruits (black cherry; blueberry) and menthol/aniseed. Quite restrained. Closed down? The palate is hard to gauge - good acidity, still quite tannic, but the fruit is a bit of a no-show. Somewhat angular: certainly not a plush wine. Some good length, and there is a black-fruit flourish in the finish. Overall quite good, although lacking in "stuffing", and surprising that what fruit it has is very dark and very cool - not typical S Rhone to me. I find it hard to say whether this wine is going through an awkward/closed phase, or whether it's just symptomatic of the vintage. I will wait a while before opening another, and then do so alongside my final bottle of the 2006 for comparison reasons.

Blackcurrant and spice on the nose. Fruity on the palate and finish. I've drank half a case of this over the last 6 months. I do look forward to opening a bottle as it is decent wine but I never finished a full bottle on the night. Not moreish enough I suppose.

Maturing nicely into a serious competitor for many CdPs. A little bricking present at the edges. Nice barnyard/fruit/light spice nose on P&P, very smooth on the palate with red fruit predominate. Over an hour it became a 91 pointer. Great QPR at $21 delivered. Glad to have 5-6 more.

A very nice, slightly rustic, red-fruited Rhone wine. Med(+) in body and alcohol (listed at 14%). Raspberry fruit, red cherry, peppery spice, menthol, quite nicely balanced, complex, with a med length finish. Very good quality wine, drinking well now, will still improve another year or 2, and drink well through 2019.

Typically I never spend more than $16 on a Cotes du Rhone, but we all know this comes from a great producer. The wine was really nice. Dark fruit and herbs and no rough edges. Very smooth, and will probably taste great for another 3 to 5 years? Considering the vintage wasn't great, I believe this wine outperforms.

A medium depth red\garnet colour with very strong slow tears forming on the glass. A powerful nose of peppery fruit and leather with a hint of indeterminable herb or greenery. The palate of this full-bodied wine was dry, smooth with low soft tannins and slight acidit. Powerful flavours of pepper and redcurrant with a slight earthiness that gave a good long finish. Had been decanted for 2 hours. Overall well balanced full flavour Coudoulet. As ever this really was better than its classification of Cotes du Rhone would suggest and better than some CDPs. Drank well with Pork and a pepper sauce.

Drank with some new hosts to continue the Lame O New Years tradition. Drank with Dry aged Steaks. Nose was earth, barn notes, tar, leather, and dark fruit. On the palate upon opening it was very tannic, but these integrated nicely after decanting for an hour or so. The earth, barn, dark fruit (cherry), leather and spice continued from the nose onto the pallet. Decent finish. Not as good as the 2007 but very nice and worth the $29 CAD. (solid 90 points)

This wine is dark ruby in color, gently fades to lighter ruby at the rim, 14% abv. On the nose, welcome to Funky Town, the barnyard is here. Very cool (if u like that stuff, which I do). I can also pull out a bit of leather, tar, black pepper, and perhaps some plums on the very intense nose. I think even a neophyte could tell that this is Old World...Rhone. On the palate, the wine is med(+) body, med tannins that are integrating nicely, and med acidity. Flavors of wet rocks and leather, slathered in slightly tart plum juice, sprinkled with black pepper. Very nice, in no way overripe. The finish is med(+) and carries through the same tar/leather and plum notes, with a kick of spice at the end. Very nice mini-CdP, drinks quite well now, should easily last another 4-5 years.

Typical rhone nose with blackcurrant pastille, fennel and herb but poised and clean. Really fresh acidity on the palate - not at all flabby, soft or meaty. Gentle cherry/raspberry fruit, not a great deal of body but rather elegant, with a twist of tannin on the end. For a wine with such a decent amount of charm and class, it is very good value. 89 points

"Unstable" drinking. Fruit, leather, medium to full bodied. Some sips were very smooth, fruity, integrated tannines. Then some were a bit austere, green tannines. So I do not understand this bottle. Probably a combination of a difficult year and too early drinking. So waiting 2 years before opening the next bottle may be the best advise.

Off the wine-by-the-glass list at Bar Boulud, NYC. Supposedly the one place that you can violate the 'NEVER order by the glass' rule. Certainly true with this one. Magnificent nose, with jammy fruit. Sweet drinking, and happily paired with selection of pate.

This is a MGSC blend which is a deep, dark purple in color. The wine has a nose of tart raspberries over crushed rocks. I get some mint and certainly black pepper spice, perhaps tobacco and wet soil. Smells so delicious, I could drink it. Then in the mouth, this wine expands considerably from what I would have expected from the tart nose. The cherry and raspberry fruits taste more ripe, with leather, spice and a minerality that defines this "2nd label Beaucastel." The mouthfeel is considerably bigger than I remember from previous bottles, and this wine will drink beautifully for the next 3-5 years. Gorgeous with all types of hearty dishes, or all on it's own.

Almost a year into this case, still impressed with this effort in a tough vintage. A nice ruby red color. Pickd up more pepper and old leather this time, as compared to January, and the 08 style has caused me to put down the 07's entirely and drink these. Round, open and seamless with a pleasingly long finish.

Nice, elegant and light, not your average bottling of Coudoulet, but an off vintage that was really good but not great - Dark red, medium/full bodied with a nose of cherry, raspberry, spice, pepper, plum and vanilla, decent structure, balance, simple, yet tasty, sweet, smooth on the palate with good length (87 Points).

Coudoulet Retrospective. A delicious, very drinkable Coudoulet if a bit lacking in complexity. This has everything you'd want in a mid-range CDR, raspberry, black cherry, some brambly dark fruit, and ample acidity.

From memory. In decanter for > 1 hr. Nice restrained aromas of unripe blue and black fruits, olives, earth, a bit of garrigue. Palate follows aromas with nice acidity, a bit more earth and some of that garrigue. Really well balanced and nice long finish. Really enjoyable but still so young. Would be interesting if open at 10 yo.

Paso Wine Country Trip; 9/1/2011-9/4/2011: Lighter red in color, GSMC blend. Mint on the nose initially, followed by an herbal quality, then nuances of tart red fruit. Mouthfeel is utterly seamless (for my palate), with mouth-puckering tannins and cherry fruit on the midpalate, and a superb spicy finish that lasts 40+ sec. Flavor profile develops, this wine has a bit of complexity to it, also a nice QPR. Will drink well now and for 5+ years.

Grenache Grand Tour at Tablas Creek: Red fruits on nose with some smoked meats, underbrush, and funk. Cherry and pomegranite fruits with red licorice, smoked meats, and earthiness. Medium body with good acidity and good spiceness. Lacks some concentration and depth. Good, though as I've been drinking my '07's lately this was underwhelming in comparison.

Still a winner in my book. Lovely nose with earth, spice, thyme, and briary red fruit. Palate with medium concentration, delicious leafy herbal quality with fine chewy tannins. Medium earth and spice finish. Great wine in a tough year. Medium weight but great spice and complexity. Not sure there's any upside, but really nice wine to stockpile while waiting on those that need age. Parker missed on this one.
Decanted for one hour. Dark garnet color. Beautiful nose of dark cherry, olives, herbs and plum marshmallow. Mouthfeel was light at first but as the wine opens up it gets heavier and more powerful. Full bodied and packed with ripe dark fruit, but structured enough to keep it all together. Dark fruit and licorice on the palate. A simple but delicious wine with huge drinkability. Pretty low on tannins and acidity but still handled a tenderloin steak well. This really represents a style of wine that I generally dislike but somehow I still like this. I didn't detect any heat but noticed that the wine was definitely more enjoyable and precise at lower than room temperature. If this "lacks the concentration and power of riper vintages", I'm probably better off drinking this these weaker vintages...

Very, very good. Dark ruby red, a little wild right after opening but will calm down after an hour or so. Herbs, spice, pepper, heat and (red cherry) fruits, medium bodied with lively acid and salty minerals. Nice long finish where smoked meats, olives and saltiness appear to fade in and last. Interesting wine and a steal if you ask me. I wonder what "better" vintages than 08 are like.

Remains a consistent performer in a weak vintage. Savory, herbal nose with dark fruits. Palate with lovely spiciness, light acidic palate with ripe, if restrained fruit. Lengthy herbal spicy finish. Just a lovely wine. Missing the concentration and power of riper vintages, and while this won't last as long as other years, is still a great performer. If you like the spicy savory side of CdP, drink up.

Honeymoon Wines; 5/21/2011-5/28/2011: Lovely open nose of leafy herbs, spice box, herbs de province, thyme, and touch of black cherry. Palate is soft and fruity, with just a touch of grip on the backend. Nice cherry an licorice notes--I get the feeling the cinsault percentage is higher this year. Medium length finish, with a touch of cedar, spice, and darker red fruits. A nice wine, totally accessible, with good conplexity, but doesn't posses the agability of '06 or '07. A fine value and expression of the region, drink up while waiting on the others to come around. Impressive for the supposedly sub par '08 vintage.

Coudoulet is often mistaken for Beaucastel's second wine, but it's not. The fruit for this wine comes from vineyards that are part of the estate, but fall outside the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation. That's why it's a Cotes du Rhone! Basically that means it's great value, because it's about 1/3 the price of its big brother! This vintage, made with Mourvedre, Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah, is bright ruby red in colour. I found red berry fruit and a touch of liquorice on the nose. The palate is medium bodied with violets, spice and a long smooth finish.

This was lighter than the young Coudoulet usually is, certainly compared to the huge 2007 and the 2005; which still needs time. But this is ready to drink, with a very strong herbal/ garrigue component that certainly comes to the forefront of this wine as much as the fruit.

Pop & Pour. Color is dark garnet. Dried berries, plums on the nose. Palate is subtle dark fruit with a very strong herbal/garrigue component, medium to light body. Finish is clipped and moderately tannic. Drinks like a low-end CdR. The herbal character became so overwhelming with time, I was unable to finish the bottle. Doubt this will come together to justify the price of the Codoulet.

There was something definitely 'off' about this wine. I was a big fan of the '07, but the '08 seems very imbalanced. There is a back-end tartness to this wine that is unappealing and reminds me of a poorly made Beaujolais. Very disappointing as I was a huge fan of the '07. Kept this open for a few days and by the 4th night it seemed to settle down a bit. Perhaps some aging will help out here. Otherwise this isn't a wine I'd recommend right now.

Pretty vivid ruby. Blackberry, plum, thyme, cedar, and old leather nose. Very soft in the mouth, with little tannin, this does not promise long life but rather is a drink now approach. So put down the 07's and have at these. From 60 acres just outside of the area entitled to the CdP designation and a nice value.

NOSE: spicy; a bit woody; seemed diffuse. TASTE: medium bodied with drying tannins; red berry flavors lack concentration. I wasn’t impressed. Gut: low 80's.

89 points

Nearly opaque garnet color with strong complex, dark red fruit, leather, and spicy pepper aromas. On the palate, it's medium bodied and smooth with black cherry, raspberry, mineral and spice flavors. Medium + finish. 14% alcohol. Second wine of Perrin brothers Chateau de Beaucastel. Unfiltered. Excellent!

Ruby red color. A little poop on the nose. Raspberries, spicy. On the palate, tons of fruit. Light mouth feel. Cherries & raspberries. Medium length finish. Not a lot of acidity or tannins. Very easy drinking and pleasant. Not very complex or deep, but very enjoyable.

Banks at home: Excelent. It seems a little CdP. Strong in the first day. Much better and well integrated in the second day. I think it will have a good potential for ageing.

This has put on some weight since the last time we tasted this. I think it's a little darker but keeps that vivid garrigue and floral elements.
