Second of the two bottles purchased, see note from bottle #1 below (8/23/2013). Second bottle not too different - both were funky, herbaceous, barnyard and less than what I had hoped for.

Visual: Pretty serious bricking. This was a somewhat cloudy, light burgundy/brick colored wine with decent transparency, but signs of age.
Nose: Not a typical Volnay. It didn't have the perfume of a Volnay. It smelled too one dimensional, a bit of forest floor with an ever slight essence of horse funk. The nose was not the wine's strong point.
Palate: At first it was secondary in nature and, like the nose, a bit one dimensional. After an hour in the glass, it became complex and quite nice. Tart cherry fruit with good acids, tobacco leaves, forest floor and a bit of hoisin sauce. This resolved itself with a moderately drying leather finish, but one where the fruit remained vibrant. Nice stuff! A-/B+

Forest floor, hoisin/soy sauce, leather on the nose – on the funky side. Well structured, mature flavors on the palate. Better tasting than smelling. Good, but not special.

Premier Cru Table (The Fifth Avenue Hotel): Some heat damage, showing brown sugar, but pretty otherwise. 91

Dried flower, forest floor aromatics. Nice intensity.
