Deep colour, still fresh and needed time to open. Rich, complex palate with plums, prunes, cherries developing in the glass. Great balance/acidity. Long. Grand Union Wine Society Guigal tasting with Brett Crittenden

Dark red. Typical Rhône aromas of pepper and forest floor, in addition to liquorice and a touch of oak. Fruity and firm in the mouth with fine tannins. Nice wine.

Not a very good wine, especially coming from the wizard of Northern Rhône. Even if this is a large scale production wine, I do expect more (and usually get more) from his cheaper bottlings too. Some earth and herbs on the nose, that was quite uninteresting and muted, even after 3 hours in a decanter. Not very expressive or interesting. The palate is quite thin & week, decent acidity and some signs of darker Syrah fruit, with a metallic thing on the finish that further ruins the overall impression. Not up to Guigal standard. I had two bottles that I have saved in the cellar since release. The first one opened tonight was corked, but I could find nothing wrong with this bottle, except for the content perhaps. Simple truth, this is what it is, and it will not get better.

Some earth & brett in the aromatics with a balanced savory flavor profile similar to many 2006 CdP I have tried. Restrained in style but very well done. No problems with the acidity on this bottle.

Savoury nose, though lacking some of the fresh butchers shop I usually get in Northern Rhone wines. Due to bottle age, the fruit has gone a bit soft, black cherry, blackberry, hints of cassis, prune, leather, black pepper. Supple tannins with cherry fruit on the palate, though the acidity is very fresh on the finish. I like acidic wines, but this is quite acidic for a red, which somewhat detracted it for me. Finish is long and does compliment fatty dishes well. I served it with a Chorizo, trotter, and chickpea dish with plenty of bread to soak up the sauce and it was very nice. Drink now as it's beginning to fade.

Dark to very dark red. Pnp, drank 2 glasses over 2 hrs. This bottle overachieved from expectations. Starting off very earthy, herbal, spice, and dark cherries and somewhat metallic. After 30 minutes this evolves to reveal black currant and black cherry, spice and pepper. The palate begins with tart red fruit, a bit savory, earth, spice, pepper, mineral. There are somewhat firm tannins with medium body and similar finish. The mid palate is a bit thin, but on the whole this is very good.

Tart red fruit and tangy acidity make this a great food wine. A rather savory, meaty profile. A little bready on the finish with some lip-smacking cherry and berry fruit, almost as if one just ate a fruit pastry. Good structure and gentle tannins. One hour decant.

Ruby red with a black fruit heavy nose, a little hint of oak in the background. Bright and fresh, full of sweet red fruit, a touch of spice and a little tanning grip. Maybe served a little cold.

Drak this with grilled entrecote and sage makaroni, good combo. Immediately after opening, it's full of burnt rubber, lots of tannins and pretty under-developed. After 2 hr in a caraffe, it improves but never loses its burnt feel. Still loads of tannins, combined now with more cherries and fruit, making it a good companion to fatty meats. Can still benefit from 3 years storage - will ripen and hopefully let some more fruit appear in storage.

Popped & poured. Decided to drink this with some pizza. The wine seems generic. Not much character or Northern Rhone quality. Saved half the bottle for 2 days. This time, the wine is better. Shows some smokiness, light berry flavor, and, yes, a hint of bacon fat. Medium weight, silky texture, flavors come through on the back end. At first, I was very disappointed, but after 2 days, the wine took on some Northern Rhone character. Still hoping for a little more from Guigal in a great vintage. Maybe this will improve with some bottle age, but I don't think there is enough structure for it to go too long.

Garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of barnyard, berries and cherries. Solid flavors of berries with added notes of cherries and a bit of bitters on the medium finish. Bright acidity, firm tannins, medium to full bodied. Drink over the next 3-5 years? Give it some air if drinking now.

A really pleasant surprise after reading some of the negative reviews. I gave this three hours of air before serving and it showed quite nicely with raspberry and herbs. Good acidity and a nice finish.

A bit hard to love. Driven by a burnt rubber note and a slightly weird and funked out mineral note. Not particularly friendly and I think would have limited appeal. Expected more from this maker.
